How much is the processor difference between Y50 and Y500 ? Is it huge ?
And - Screen difference ? Anyone here who had Y500 and got this one ?
-
I had a Lenovo Y500 right before I sold it for the Y50. The Y50 has the same screen as the Y500. The viewing angles are very similar if not the same.Valued17 likes this.

how much did you sell your y500 for? just curious
-
Any regrets buying the Y50 Touch? How responsive is the touchscreen? Any other issues you've encountered?
Sorrry for the questions. Right now, the biggest con for me is the screen, which many of us expected. I think I'll pull the trigger anyway seeing as this will be my first laptop and I'm not used to the quality of an IPS screen; I need a laptop before August (ruling out the new ASUS models), want at least at 860M (ruling out the N550JK), and the price point is incredibly nice at around $1200. -
I sold it for $700 with 8Gb of RAM and dual Gt650m.BlazeHN likes this.

Touch pretty responsive. The screen is decent then again I haven't experienced an IPS screen. I feel the TN Panel appropriate for gaming but I only wished the color gamut was higher. The touch screen I feel is better than the non touch because it's an edge to edge glass panel without the glossy bezel protruding from the Y500/Y510p which scratched easily.

I currently have an old Lenovo T61 (yes, long overdue for a new laptop!).. I really love everything about the Y50 except I am worried about the screen.. I am not a fan of the T61 screen.. it's pretty bad, but it looks like the Y50 is just as bad from the posted pictures.. dissapointing, since everything else about the laptop is almost perfect for my needs..
-
This laptop is the best bang for your buck. It comes down to whether you will need a better screen for certain tasks (Photo Editing) only care for gaming. Im using mine for gaming and to do some photoshop/Sony Vegas.

Would you be able to provide any quick pics you can provide of the screen viewing angles?arcturar likes this.

Yeah kingfirejet, some nice, colourful pictures of the screen would be amazing!
-
According to task manager, 29% of my memory is being used when just browsing the internet. Is this normal? I have 8gb of ram.

I will try to get some this evening after work. I have a full script ready for a video review as well. Will be filmed and uploaded by the end of Saturday this week, stay tuned! Channel is here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1BfVxy2nvN3TfT5hJJJNL97qYa8K1rsX&feature=mh_lolz
Also, would people like a installation video for an SSD and RAM?WhiteWuf and raulgalarza75 like this. -
It's not impossible but it's highly unlikely. It really depends on what browser, how many tabs you have open, what content, etc..
-
yes please, atleast with how to swap the ssd

Thanks, you're a champ!

I look forward to seeing it. I don't know what you plan to do lighting-wise, but I'd love to see a Y50 review with a nice 3-point lighting setup that properly illuminates the laptop.
-
Kingfirejet, how reflective is the touchscreen on your Y50 Touch? Is it more like a mirror than the Y500 you had? I want a glossy screen but don't want it to always be reflecting my face in it. I had an HP tablet 4 years ago back when touchscreen tech was still relatively new, and the screen on that thing just sucked. the backlight was super weak and regardless of lighting condition all I could ever see was my face reflecting back at me on the touchscreen.
Also, does the touchscreen on the Y50 make the actual display underneath look far away or is the touchscreen glass relatively close to the actual display? -

I ordered mine late May. Originally posted with a shipping date of June 19. Two days ago I received notification that it was already shipping
-
Ahh, lucky. I'm pretty much praying that happens to me. My shipping date is still June 17th. Perhaps the fact that no one else can order the optical drive model will help move my shipping date closer..
-
Hi guys, i know it´s a little off topic, but do any of you know the eta for the Asus G550jk?
I want to get it so bad!!
...Would be a great upgrade from my 2005 hp pavilion xD -
Wow you are due for an upgrade... I e-mailed xotic the other day and they basically told me my guess would be just as good as theirs, they have no idea when they are getting them in.Nikolay3D likes this.

Did you order the 4710HQ version?

if you are using chrome, it's very memory extensive.

Lenovo.com was doing some pretty weird stuff with their pricing/models yesterday. I think we might have just seen the price for the 4k screen. Was up to $1799 I think.
-
Yeah, some of the prices jumped pretty weirdly. It's definitely possible that they showed the 4k screen prices when they were rearranging to remove the model with the optical drive.
-
Lol, ikr? xP
Btw, i´ve doing some research and it seems like it will be available on the 15th. Take a look:
ASUS G550JK-DS71 15.6" ROG Laptop. ASUS G550JK-DS71 on the right side it says ETA JUN 15 2014 -
That's a really fair price, especially if the 4K screen is an IPS display. Lenovo really is delivering far more bang for the buck than any of its competitors.
The only two things turning me off is the longer wait (probably at least 3 more months for Canadians like me to actually receive the laptop) and the reduced battery life. I don't know why nobody's brought that up yet (as far as I am aware) but a display lighting 4 times as many pixels as a standard FHD display will definitely require more battery power. The Dell XPS 15 and other super high-res displays seem to have pretty good battery life so the difference won't be huge. But I think slightly lowered battery life should be listed as a negative alongside temporary scaling problems with programs like Adobe Photoshop and slightly less crisp graphics when working or gaming at 1920x1080 resolution (compared to FHD screens that are 1920x1080 native). Oh, and the slightly higher price tag. On the flip side, if the display is an IPS panel colour vividness and accuracy will be better than on the TN FHD displays and viewing angles will be a lot better. Though if it is IPS it can also potentially have IPS glow and ghosting/image retention issues that could be pretty annoying.
I just want to see a video of the glossy Touch display and get confirmation that it is indeed sharper and more vivid than the lousy Anti-Glare FHD displays (sorry for being impatient and asking for the same thing over and over, lol). For me personally I think FHD is a better choice than 4K assuming decent display quality (on the glossy FHD Touch pane), but I like how Lenovo is giving us the choice. -
I'm personally curious if, when under casual usage (say, browsing the internet, using a word processor, etc), the Y50's battery lasts 5 hours like it claims. Has anyone done a battery endurance test that I've missed?
-
When did you order yours originally?
I ordered mine on 05/26/14 and it was to ship 06/19/14, then go delayed to 06/30. Now today, it's back to showing 06/19/14. Should receive 06/25/14. Maybe we should thank all the impatient people that canceled their orders?
I ordered the high end touch model ( 59421835)
At least Lenovo got closer to the 3 weeks ship date again. -
Lol I canceled, there was no way I was gonna wait until July 10th for my model. I just went with the base touch from amazon and will upgrade manually. I don't have trust in their shipping rates or methods at all.
-
I'd definitely like to see the install video for the SSD. Not so much for the physical removal of the HDD and the installation of the SSD, but more for the best way to get the OS off of the 1 TB drive and up and working on the smaller SSD.
-
I mad a similar list the other day. Here were my criteria, in order of my personal preference:
1. 15.6 Screen
2. At least 1920 x 1080 resolution
3. Quad-core i7
4. At least 8 GB RAM
5. Full-size Keyboard with standard number pad
6. Backlit Keyboard
7. Less than 1 thick
8. IPS Screen
9. Matte finish screen
10. mSATA slot
11. 240+ GB SSD
12. At least GeForce 840m Maxwell GPU
13. At least 2 USB 3.0
14. At least 4 hours battery life
15. Edge-to-edge glass (no bezel around screen)
16. Less than 5 lbs.
17. Blu-ray Reader
18. 2x2 AC WiFi Card
19. 1 TB 7200 RPM HDD
20. Bluetooth 4.0
21. Premium speakers/subwoofer
22. Webcam
23. Touch screen
It's surprising to me that I can't find something with at least the top 10-12 things on my list all present in the same laptop. Those seem like they would be the most desirable features across the board, so I don't understand why every laptop manufacturer isn't offering something that meets those specs. -
I ordered the SSD model, and theres nothing happened yet, the estimate ship date is 13th... I really hope it will be shipped on time
-
My order (59421835) was placed on 5/23 with the orig ship date of 6/19 then bumped to 6/30 then back to 6/19.
-
Just finished talking to a lenovo rep, who actually seemed to know there stuff. Apparently, they just got their shipment of 4710's in earlier this week. So a whole bunch of people who ordered that model will have there laptop shipped by Friday.
-
Honestly if the 4k screen isn't IPS and it costs 1800 I wouldn't call it good bang for buck at all. At that point I'd rather spend the extra 200 and get the gs60 3k. A pound lighter and thinner, which some here seem to value so highly considering the fact that going from 5.3 to 5.7 pounds was a no go for some people (gs60 is 4.4 pounds). 3k IPS or PLS screen > 4k TN screen any day of the week especially since the y50 fhd screen from the pics so far show its pretty terrible. The gs60 also has the much better 870m and the standard ac 7260.
So yeah, 1800 and no IPS or PLS, and lenovo loses their advantage of price for performance, because the performance will not match up. 1800 for a TN screen? Please.

if you have been following the ghost thread its not even something to consider. its melting peoples desks/laps, burning hands, having to use modified bios to undervolt cpu, adjust fan speeds. people are buying external fans to play over the top
of the laptop blowing into the vents from above, its extremely loud. it was a nice idea and will obviously be improved upon in future generations, but as it is right now its not worth the $10 it costs to ship.BlazeHN likes this. -
Hence why anyone who had ordered a 4710 model had their shipping date changed to 6/19 (or around then)
-
Yes, getting the i7-4710HQ/16GB/860m 4GB/non-touch version
-
Mine WAS June 19th, but it's now shipping as of two days ago.
-
I just said various times that from the model number it will be a PLS panel so I don't understand why you are still complaining when the odds are for PLS. To others still complaining about wireless cards, can your internet even go that fast? the standard household speed is like 25Mbs so I don't know why people are so worried when clearly your internet in the first place isn't that fast.Banender likes this.

Now that a few people have these, can anyone confirm that they handle BF4 without excessive throttling/heat issues? That's the biggest issue I've had with my GS60.
-
Oh gosh, if that's truly the case and mine ships tomorrow I'll be so insanely happy. Thanks for the info!
