You know that you are limited to the speed your internet provider provides, right? You can get a 500TB/s modem and router, but if you have a 3Mbps plan then you are only going to download at 3Mbps. The speeds on the WiFi router/modem are transfer speeds. So let's say you have a WiFi card that supports 500Mbps and a 3Mbps plan from ScrewYouOver Internet Co. You can receive data from the internet at 3Mbps but you can receive data from other computers on the same network at the speed of slowest WiFi card in the connection. Hope this makes sense. The way to get faster download speeds and improve your speed test is to get a faster internet plan.

But back on topic.. People who have gotten your y50s already.. we would still love more videos, comments.. I am really curious about your battery life experiences! :)

Can someone comment on the screen's backlight? I have a dell touch screen at home that is so glossy that any sun on it makes it impossible to see anything as the backlight simply isn't bright enough.

If it's bad then I will definitely get the SSD model. If not, I may forgo the SSD and decide later if I want to do it myself.

Check the owner's thread for some pictures of the glossy version indoors.

the point of having 500 pages is that the majority of things that people aren't sure of or wants to know is already answered. indeed repetition's partly inevitable, that's why we tell people to read through the entire thread. it's not snark if people are too lazy to read through the thread

Honestly at the point it gets that long we need a condensed version rather than telling people to spend a couple hours reviewing the thread. The owners thread was a good idea to resolve this.

I have been following this thread for hundreds of pages, Could anyone please explain to me how the 4k or UHD screen works. What do y'all mean when you talk about the 4k being a problem when playing games that require a lower resolution and also working in programs such as Photoshop?

I love to game but I also need a great display for all the design work and 3D modeling I do. If the Y50 computer does end up with an IPS screen, it seems to be a good choice for my needs. Unless someone could point me in a different direction. Thanks!

beeho, if you have CS GO can you tell me if the game occasionally freezes for 1-2 seconds then continues? Has been happening to me since I got the machine.

beeho, you're a champ! Honestly, the screen doesn't even look that bad. But I've already cancelled my Non-Touch 512GB model (was due to ship on June 19th) and since I watch a lot of movies I prefer glossy anyways. The computer looks so awesome! I'll be ordering the Touch model soon. :)

If i had the extra dough (which i sort of do), i would have gone with the touch model too. Talk to Brian from Klick Online. He might get you a discounted price.

How annoying is the amount of keyboard flex in this laptop? Also could you measure the travel on the keys?

Some games will run in a little 1080p window when you launch them(or whatever res you use). You'll have a black border all around the window. The only way around it is to manually change your desktop resolution, which is kind a pain.

In my video you see a fair amount of flex, but i don't notice it when i'm typing/gaming.

    Travel on the keys?

It's about 270 mm from the caps lock to the enter button. About 64 mm width for the number pad and 4 mm between enter button and number pad = 338 mm wide.

Then about 101 mm from the F buttons to the space bar in length

yeah the video is a little deceiving, it just makes it look likes it has a lot a flex but the keyboard is great to type on.

I mean the travel from unclicked to pushed down. Thank you for those measurements as well though!

Yeah the video makes it look like a lot so I'm slightly concerned. Are you able to type very quickly and accurately on it?
I use a mechanical keyboard on my desktop so I have somewhat different preferences. My asus s46cm was a pain to type on because of the lack of depth to the clicks.

Yeah this manual changing of desktop resolution is the thing that sucks about 4k. Wish you could just use 1080 desktop resolution and when you play a 4k movie or anything that supports 4k that you have the option of making it play in 4k automatically.

Anyone think that may get implemented in the future?

Not sure the total depth but it's much shorter compared to a standard desktop keyboard. If i had to guess, maybe 2 mm in depth of travel at most?

I find my typing to be accurate and quick. What bugs me is the size of the number 0 button on the number pad. I'm so used to it being a wide button but instead it's the same size at the rest of the number pad keys. I wish the number pad was a farther distance away from the main keyboard.

I have a slightly more subjective question: does the laptop feel premium or does it feel cheap? My 4-year old Acer laptop that I got for $700 has an aluminum palm rest and it feels really awesome and solid when my hands are on it. Doesn't flex at all unless I purposefully try to press it. The main thing I'm worried about with the Y50 is that since it's plastic it might feel like plastic and cheapen the overall experience. Would you say this is indeed a problem or does the sort of rubberized finish make it nice? If resting your hands on the plastic palm rest normally, does it flex at all? What about during typing?

it's definitely NOT cheap. my last laptop was an asus crapy model that was just cheap cheap plastic all over.

for the y50, you get the rubberized plastic surface that feels nice and smooth which i like very much. it's not cheap but it's not premium premium like metal finishes, ya know what i mean?

does it flex when i relax my palms on it? if it does, it's ever so slightly. this is not like the stiff metal experience.

does anybody know if having ventilation between keyboard and screen could cause the following problem:

when you want to like let something download and just close the lid while it's downloading, by doing that you are basically closing the vents, no?

Does the lid need to be up for the comp to be able to ventilate?

I do this a lot - download things while keeping the lid down so that's my concern

First time posting but I have been following for a while.

Im sure someone previously mentioned they were going to get a Y50 shipped from the US to the UK. Just wanted to check if anyone has done this, or if anyone knows what the potential extra costs might be as the Y50 will be so much more expensive in the UK.

Well usually the import costs and duties typically make up the difference, so you will probably have to pay close to the UK price anyway.

Apparently there are no duties to pay on laptops, would just need to pay the standard 20% VAT on the value.

Just have to wait and see how much the standard UK price is. I think it was £800 when it was on coming soon for about a week before it got removed

I was in Computex yesterday. Its chassis material around the keyboard is similar to G750. The cover chassis is brushed aluminium and it seems that the current trend of gaming laptops these days are fingerprint magnets.

The screen is superb as expected from 4K display. The dimension is roughly as big as MSI GS60.
Moreover, the design is way better than G550 or G56.

But I feel like 4K in 15.6 screen is too small. I could barely see the menu.
They should think a way to automatically switch the resolution (4K turn on/off) otherwise it's too cumbersome to change it manually.
I was wondering this issue is also present in Y50 4K display.

On amazon.de the lenovo y50 is called y50-y70, does this mean there will be a 17 inch version? (or a 17.3inch) coming out soon?

If it's anything like all the competition, the vents should redirect downward when the lid is shut. MacBook, zenbook, razer, etc all share this feature.

There are ways to make everything larger. Problem is, it's really time consuming. Hopefully they do this automatically with the release version so the out of the box experience isn't frustrating. Those reinstalling Windows will always have to deal with it though.

Edit: really the only glitch I've noticed with 4k is some games. Chrome was an issue a month ago but chrome canary has 4k support now, so it's only a matter of weeks before chrome gets it too. Command prompt is pretty tiny too but I never looked into enlarging it. Everything else I've used seems to scale properly given you adjust the settings properly.

Well it was the first boot and SSHD's show improvement around the third boot because then the computer learns what files to put on the SSD portion of the drive

I dont think its a typo, it really comes with 7260 which is a great news. If you look at the memory sticks, it has 2*4G instead of 1*8G, so this is a different model.
