I dont know, but you buy a new keyboard here for $36.99:
New for IBM Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 Y500N Y500NT Y500N IFI Series Laptop Keyboard | eBay
So if Lenovo tells you the repairs wont come cheap, this is an option.

Hi everyone, i have a problem with my Y500, please help me the original posto in lenovo forums is here
- Yesterday I got a warning from the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) saying that my disk might be at risk and that I should back up and contact support.
- In RST says that the problem is in my SSD.
- When I suspended my laptop it got stuck and restarted.
- I got the "Your PC ran into a problem" after restart
- Also when it was up I got the blue screen with the sad face with the error KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED(storport.sys)
- I installed "HD Tune pro" in my laptop and in my brother's laptop (we got the "same" Y500 I realized then that we got different SSD)
- In HD Tune says that I have the Sandisk SSD U100 16GB, but shows no information in the S.M.A.R.T. tab ("there are no items to show in this view")
- My brother got the Samsung MZMPA016HMCD SSD 16 GB
- Now I can use the laptop, but when I suspend or hibernate takes a lot of time and restarts, and some times while I am playing I get the RST warning.
- I took the back of the laptop off to see if anything was not properly attached, everything was fine, I took off the mSATA ssd and put it back on, nothing changed.
- I downloaded and re-installed Intel Rapid Storage Technology and nothing changed.
- I checked this post and tried to check if the cache was working, cache read and write percentages were on 0.00%
- I tried to download and install Intel Rapid Start Technology and the installer gave me the error
This is the ExpressCache info, it says

If you are comfortable doing the repairs yourself, then the ideal situation is for Lenovo to just send you a replacement keyboard so that you don't need to actually send your laptop in. If they won't cover this under warranty, you can buy a replacement keyboard on eBay for about $40. That should be your maximum exposure for cost... not too bad at all. -
Hi everyone, i also have a problem with my Y500.
> first of all after i have formatted all the partition in the mSATA SanDisk 16GB and 1TB HDD, i installed fresh copies of windows 8 on the HDD.
> and i realised that the boot is taking longer than usual
> my mSATA ssd shows up in the bios but not in the windows, diskpart command prompt and even in disk management.
> many things i have try to solve this by taking out the SSD and turning on the laptop, and inserting it back and nothing seems to work.
> the SSD still detected in the bios but not in the windows so i cannot use the expresscache anymore.
please help me with this problem ASAP

Can you post a screenshot of the disk management? (you're using diskmgmt.msc in cmd prompt right?)e

GParted -- Live CD/USB/PXE/HD
And thats odd, i can see the SSD on mine 0_o. -
Do I need the Y400 GN35 or the Y500 GN36 for my Y500 750M if I want to get it in SLI? When I search accessories with my model number the Y400 GN35 comes up.
Nevermind I figured it out. Seems that Lenovo is completely out of them after calling about 4-5 numbers to get a hold of their spare parts department.
So if anyone is interested in selling I'm looking to buy... -
Use this instead:

The raeson you can't boot the usb is because secure boot is enabled.
To disable it, press the button on the side, enter the BIOS setup and turn it off.
Then boot off the USB and format your SSD.
Cheers. -

Yes. Try putting it in another laptop (if you have one) and see the results. -

Also, why would you want to upgrade to Windows 8 pro? -
from the link
If you buy a new PC with the Core version of Windows 8 installed on it, you aren't eligible for the discounted $40 upgrade to Windows 8 Pro. Instead, you need to purchase the Windows 8 Pro Pack from Microsoft. The good news is that upgrade takes only a few minutes. You don't need any installation media; all that's required is a product key. And it doesn't require migrating files, settings, or programs, all of which remain untouched. The bad news is it costs more. Currently, the discounted upgrade price direct from Microsoft is around $70.Click to expand...

Idk i have the key so i thought i'll upgrade. i know there isnt much difference between core and pro for an average user but if the add features to windows works for me then i will have pro without the hassle of a clean install -

can you answer in yes or no because i dont understand lol. Can i use a retail win8 pro key to upgrade my core to pro using the "add features to windows"?
and will i have to reinstall any apps, drivers after that?

Hey,
I am considering buying this laptop but I ve urgent question I would like answered if someone would be so kind here.
I like everything about this laptop but I am in a need of laptop that is able to sustain 4 hours minimum of battery life (aprox 4 hours of university lectures with no power plug option). This would be goal while having wi-fi on (all the time), typing in WORD (like 40mins of 60mins), occasionally web-browsing (like 10mins of 60mins) and this all while having brightness low to the minimum comfortable level indoors. I read about the battery time in tests that are comparable to my goal, I see times of 3h-3.5h..
I am planning on getting i7 3630qm, 650m SLI, 8gb version
My question is : will removing the second GPU from UltraBay affect battery life ? and if so by how much percentage ? I read that single 650M GPU takes aroud 45W full load, but I assume that since GPU will be idleing it will be much less, however since Optimus isnt option here I guess it should still affect the battery life, but I am not sure by how much....Can someone help me out here ? I googled hard yet I havnt found single usefull information, which seems odd as this was my first though of improving battery life...
And if I remove the 2nd GPU will I be able to get OPTIMUS working (cos I assume this would lower the power consumtion and therby increase battery life even more) ?
P.S.- If I upgrade to 16gb ram 1600Mhz 1.5V will this affect the battery life by much when doing what is aforementioned ?
Thanks a lot for any answer that help me -

I didnt say I am buying single GPU....I am definetly buying SLI, but I am asking if removing the second GPU from UltraBay, when in university, helps with max battey life and if OPTIMUS is possibility after doing so.....

Also, sorry, i have probably skimmed your post. -
There is no Optimus on the Y500. If you take out the second GPU, you'll gain an extra 30 minutes of battery life, but even then it'll be hard to squeeze out 4 hours on a full charge. You might just barely make it if you keep web browsing to a minimum since WiFi is one of the things that drains battery. The RAM upgrade won't make a significant impact on battery life.

@all my Y500 59371965 has started to show problems, when i open the lid or push it back ie away from the keyboard then the speakers on the laptop stop working(no software issue, its like the power to speakers has been cut). When I apply slight pressure on the lid in the direction so that the lid closes the speakers work again.
So,
Away from keyboard - Stop playing intermittently ie when I apply pressure in the direction which would open the lid.
Towards the keyboard - Makes the speakers work again ie when I apply pressure in the direction which would close the lid.
I will call support but till then, if anybody had a similar problem, what did you do ? -
Went and bought one of these on sale after I sold my old MSI GT683.
Pretty happy with it overall, it was a model with GT 650M SLI but no mSATA SSD. I had an A-Data 32gb mSATA available so I slapped that in. Was a bit of a hassle to config it to work as the SSD cache drive because I didnt realize you actually need to install the ExpressCache drivers and NOT the Intel Smart Response driver.
Anyway after getting it up and running I'm relatively happy with the performance. Obviously its not quite as fast as a pure SSD drive would be, but its a lot better than without an SSD at all
So in short in my opinon:
Pros:
-Decent performance for a relatively cheap price
-Its a lot more silent than my old GT683
-Sound system is better than average
Cons:
-Touchpad is pretty horrid and bend(ish)
-SLI can be tricky in some games -

*However*
SLI Y510P has worse battery life than the Y500, because the Y510P uses more powerful components and optimus is not compatible with SLI. -
Yeah I upgraded to win7 about a week ago, and it rocks.

I saw this laptop a while back on Amazon (with windows 7) and liked it - didn't buy it. Now it's back again with Windows 8 and I just wondered if it was a good deal. It just has one GPU according to the information which is not recommended above but what do I know - not much to be honest

FYI, I had warranty repair done on my Y500's motherboard, but the onsite tech screwed up the install. Laptop was overheating. When I finally got a response back from Lenovo, they decided to just replace the laptop for a comparable model. As it turns out, Y500's are out of stock, so I'm getting a shiny new dual SLI Y510p. They even threw in a 24gb ssd, which I didn't have before. For once I think I'm glad the onsite tech didn't do his job right. And thankful for warranty. I hope this experience helps others who need to find out how Lenovo's warranty services are. I just have the limited 1 year coverage, not an upgraded warranty.

How'd you get on-site service? I had to ship mine in to a repair depot which left me about 3 weeks w/o the laptop. -

I had the same thing happen to me when my second Y500 unit bricked and I was offered the choice of a Y500 650M or Y500 750M model, both with SSD (which I didn't have before). This was before the Y510p came out. I took another Y500 650M model because I bought the Ultrabay GPU and 170W charger separately and there was simply no stock available for the 750M Ultrabay at the time (there still isn't). They didn't allow me to return everything for a Y500 750M SLI model without paying extra because of the price difference, and I would still be losing the SSD and Ultrabay DVD drive. In the end, I'm pleased I still got the 650M SLI model as this thing runs cooler than the newer models and overclocks like a champ. Having mSATA is also a huge plus, as 42mm M.2 is a dead end for a large-capacity SSD upgrade. Seems like third time's the charm as this unit's been working flawlessly for a few months, except for the SSD which died recently, but that's a common thing and I'm probably getting a real SSD around Black Friday anyway.
