Just my 2 cents.. while everyones bickering about Win7/8 support for SLI.. im running LinuxMint 14 on my Y500 and everything works without upgrading vBIOS.. even bluetooth works great... btw if you guys are on WIN8 dont autoupdate NVIDIA and dont install NVIDIA games profile app it will mess up your graphics if youre not careful.
-
Use the official fix from Lenovo.. The post by Cleo_Lenovo has the links to it.

Just picked up my Y500 from the lenovo outlet for around 500 after tax, SLI, 16gb RAM, 1TB + 16gb msata, FHD, i7, don't think i could have done better for the price!

I dont know if this has been asked but has anyone tried installing ddr3 1866mhz ram into their system? Did it show any improvements? Also is there a setting in the unlocked bios to increase ram speed? Thanks sorry if this was already asked.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk -
RAM speed is a non-issue.
Nothing will happen to RAM speed if you install 1866Mhz RAM into your system. It will run at 1600Mhz (despite the memory itself being capable of running up to 1866MHz. The laptop BIOS will continue to run the RAM at 1600Mhz).
You cannot adjust RAM speed in the BIOS. Even if you could, RAM speed does not give you any practical improvement whatsoever. Zero. None. Zilch.
If you're looking for a practical improvement to system performance, then get an SSD. A 256GB mSATA SSD will cost you $200, will give you very noticeable performance benefits, and will still keep your 2.5" SATA drive bay available for use for a slow high-capacity mechanical HDD storage. -
Thank you. I was looking into ssd's. I was going to just replace the hybrid drive I have with one but saw msata and 2.5" ssds are close in price. I was curious about the ram because gskills 1866 is the same price as 1600mhz. Ill probably go with the 1866 encase I get a laptop in the future capable of that speed but as you said it makes no noticeable difference so I dont know.

Hey, im new here, also i don't know much about my y500's hardware as i haven't opened it yet, so im gona go ahead n ask a noob question, can i add an ssd with the original 1 tb hard drive? i bought a bare y500 half a year ago which had no SLI, has no ssd or full hd screen and has a 120 watt charger. so now im upgrading it, therefore the above question
.
Also i got a gt 650m imported from the us, i have installed it n used it on bf 4 in SLI mode for about 30 minutes approx, and i got around about 30 fps at an average on ultra settings, considering that u guys have fhd screens n i don't n u r getting around 40 fps average, shouldn't i be getting more fps? is it because of my low watt power supply? or perhaps some other setting?
im running win 7 pro with the latest graphics drivers.
Thanks for reading :hi2: Hope i get an answer soon. -
For SSD, you want to look for mSATA SSDs. That will allow you to have both an SSD and your existing mechanical HDD in your system. If you just buy a standard 2.5" SATA SSD, you will be forced to remove your existing 2.5" SATA mechanical HDD.
And you are probably getting throttled performance on your GPUs because you are using an underpowered power supply.

Ok, Thanks for the help, wonder where i will get the psu from though

Hi Guys,
I really hope someone could help me out with 2 very tedious issues I have faced with this laptop since purchasing it when it came out early this year.
Issue 1
Since I use this laptop as a 'desktop' 99% of the time, I operate with the Y500 with the lid closed, connected to a larger table monitor. The problem I am having is that the laptop goes to sleep EVERY time even when set to 'Never' sleep in the power management settings. I noticed that the laptop only listens when I use it opened and not using the external monitor.
Issue 2
When the laptop goes to sleep, I can wake it using wired keyboards and mouses, but when I use bluetooth keyboards and mouses, I can never get the bluetooth devices to wake the laptop.....
If anyone can help shed some light on the above two issues, I would be very appreciative. Thanks very much! -
Go here:
Change both of these to 'do nothing':
Issue 2 solution:
Bluetooth has never worked for me, but here are a few things you can try.
Go to Device Manager.
Find your Bluetooth keyboard and mouse under 'keyboards' and 'mice and other pointing devices':
Double-click on them to open up their Properties.
Go to Power Management tab and check 'allow this device to wake the computer':
You can also do the same for your Bluetooth adapter. Since Bluetooth doesn't work for me, I'll use my WiFi adapter as an example:
Hope this helps. -
Hey Octiceps,
Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, both your solutions I do not work for me. I think I may not have been very clear in phrasing my first issue. My laptop does not go to sleep when the lid is closed(I had already set it as you suggested a long time ago when i first got the laptop to not sleep when the lid is closed). However, it goes to sleep still after a short time when there is no activity(Lid is closed BUT display is being output to an external monitor). I always operate my laptop with the lid closed and display output to an external monitor. I think somehow when the display is output to an external monitor and the lid is closed, the laptop gets confused....and still puts it to sleep when there is no activity. Note - The laptop does not sleep when the lid is closed.......everything works fine with the output being displayed to the external monitor. BUT it still sleeps when it detects no activity on the laptop even when I set the power management to 'NEVER' sleep.
For the issue with the y500 not being able to be woken up from sleep with blue tooth devices like a mouse or keyboard, I think that's very disappointing.
Thanks -

Hello guys i have the lenovo y510p with 2 graphics cards in it. I also have the 1TB hard drive and 24GB mssd. My question is this: I want to replace the hard drive with my ssd. I have a samsung 256gb ssd, what's going to happen with the mssd? Do i have to remove it? Will it mess up the ssd? and how do i take the windows 8 from my 1tb hard drive and take the boot settings from the mssd? is it complicating? thanks!
-
Hey Guys, i bought my Y500 some months ago with only 1 Gt650m, in the meantime, my mSSD got all f*ucked up, and I even had to install Windows 7 to keep my laptop running without constant blue screens on startup... anyway, the thing is, I want to get this laptop running awesome again so I have a few questions for you know-it-all people
1) Is it worth to buy a new mSSD? There are some nice 120GB's out there, is it an overkill that much storage just for cache? I'm kinda sick of the slow start of windows 7, slower than normal really, don't know why, it's windows 8 better even without the mSSD? So I could try to go back to Windows 8 without installing a new mSSD and still see an improvement?
2) Is there a real significant advantage of SLI now with 650m cards? I haven't read about drivers, and windows 8, and SLI of 650's lately so I don't know if there's still problems with drivers or new ones are stable enough?? This option is more expensive since I'll have to get an AC adapter of 170W too..
Thank you guys for your awesome support! -

Also, I would say Windows 8 is better than win 7. It is my opinion, people can argue for both cases, but for me, win 8 boots up a lot faster. Also I downloaded an external program to get the start menu button back (or just use win 8.1) and I can't really tell a difference between 7 and 8.
2) Yes sli will give a significant improvement in performance. There WAS a problem with it not working on windows 8.1 but its been resolved with a bios update. I don't have the sli version so thats all I can say. -
Is it possible?
How can I do that? Would there be problems related to the missing Windows 8 key that it's only on the Bios since it's a new mSata SSD?
Will I have to format my main 1TB drive to do this once I get the OS on the mSata?
I'm liking the option of having the OS on the mSata, becuase I can have windows there along with Steam and hopefully have a little faster laptop, but I don't want to spend 80$ on a 120GB mSSD and not getting it to work :/ I read this http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad...00-upgrade-mSata-SSD-vs-Sata-SSD/td-p/1061801 but still couldn't find exact answers...
thank you for your help! -
1) Yes, an SSD is absolutely worth it. It is the single best upgrade you can buy, in terms of both raw performance improvement and bang-for-your-buck. If you're considering mSATA SSDs, don't bother with using it as a cache. What you want is to save up $200 for a 256GB mSATA SSD.
You will want an mSATA SSD in your mSATA slot, and a slow high-capacity mechanical HDD in your 2.5" SATA slot (the 5400rpm 1TB drive that comes pre-installed on a Lenovo Y500 is perfect). Install your OS / applications / games onto the mSATA SSD. That type of content has load times, and will benefit from the speed improvement of SSD.
All of your bulk media content (photos, music, videos, pr0n, etc) goes onto your slow mechanical HDD. That type of content is the stuff that eats up tons of storage space, and does not depend at all on storage speed. An MP3 file or MKV BluRay rip will play back equivalently well on slow 5400rpm HDD storage, or fast SSD storage.
For what you want (improvements to load time, OS boot time, and system responsiveness when multitasking), you want an SSD. Upgrading to a different OS, or upgrading any other hardware component in your system, will not give you the improvements you can get from an SSD.
2) Yes, there will be an improvement. You can roughly expect about an 80% improvement to graphics performance by going from a single GeForce 650M --> 2x GeForce 650M SLI. There is not an issue if you go to Windows 8.0 (although Windows 8.1 support still needs to be fully ironed out). It will roughly cost you a bit under $200 to do this upgrade. If you can manage to buy the 650M Ultrabay module from Lenovo, then it will come with the higher-power (170W) power supply in the same bundle.
Is this upgrade worth it? Well, depends on your financial situation. If you want better graphics performance / graphics quality, and are willing to spend $200 to get it, then absolutely get SLI. -
You actually want to do the Windows 7 install with only your mSATA SSD installed (mechanical HDD removed). My guide explains why. Once you boot into Windows after the install process, you can install the 1TB mechanical HDD, go into Disk Manager, and wipe it clean to use as just bulk 1TB storage.
You absolutely will notice a performance difference by going to a full SSD (instead of only mechanical HDD or a low-capacity SSD cache). If you want an idea of what to expect, look at some of the YouTube videos in my signature. Those tests were performed back in 2010 using a laptop manufactured in 2007. And I'll bet that 6-year-old laptop w/SSD will still outperform a modern laptop today that is only using traditional mechanical HDD storage.
As for SSD capacity... I'd really recommend you save up around $200, and get a 256GB mSATA SSD. You can get by with 120GB, but you will feel space-constrained pretty quickly. The problem there is that mSATA SSDs are hard to salvage (unlike 2.5" SATA SSDs). They are hard to sell or re-use in another system. Very few systems have an mSATA slot at all. And even if they do, the laptop owner may not want a 120GB capacity SSD. I'd really recommend 256GB mSATA SSD, because it will have enough storage capacity for OS / apps / games that you won't need to make too many trade-offs. -
Thanks for the nice response Kent, I've read your guide, I think the most difficult part for me until today is finding that damn Windows 8 ISO, guess I'll go with a 120GB mSata III because I have aorund 100$ in paypal sitting in my account and I really can't afford a 240GB right now, I'm ok with just having OS and a few more programs along with a couple of games installed, because I can have those games downloaded in the 1TB HDD and then just copy them from one drive to the other as I play them. Next thing to do would be upgrade to a SLI config, but again, that's even more expensive than the mSSD so another few months until that.
I'm going with Windows 8 again, I really liked that OS, I guess I got used to it, and I'll try your solution posted in may, i found it and it's pretty complete, I've already opened my laptop so I'm good to go, just waiting for the SSD to arriveHopefully I'll update if everything goes fine, and if not, I'll ask for advice again xD This is a really awesome laptop, too bad those 16GB mSSD that came by default were so freaking bad quality. But overall it's an incredible machine even 6 or more months after i bought it.

Amen to that. My mSATA SSD died after just 3 months.

Windows 8 (multiple editions) (x64) - DVD (English)
As seen on this page- MSDN Subscriber Downloads
(I don't see one that is only "regular" Win8...)
I've never used Win8 and would kind of like to use Win7. Can I just remove the OEM drive and do a clean install of Win7 on the 2.5" SSD? I have an optical drive for the install. (you mentioned that you had issues with the USB installer) -
Yes, you can put Windows 7 on a Lenovo Y500. I am running that configuration right now.
I'd suggest that during the install process, you keep only your SSD installed and keep the OEM mechanical HDD unplugged. This will completely avoid any potential issues around drive targeting.
And yes, if you have an optical drive and are willing to use it, that's the easiest way to go about doing it. The only times I've ever run into drive targeting / formatting errors during the Windows 7 process were when I attempt to install via USB flash drive... probably because the Windows 7 installer was getting confused around which writeable volume to target. -
Cheers, -
Okay, thanks! I guess I'll play around with 8 to see if I like it and then go from there.
Still confused about which version of WIndows 8 to get. (if I go that route) I understand you can't get too detailed for legal reasons...just not sure if I need the "System Builder" edition, or...? The one I linked to earlier installs either Regular or Pro based on the key provided. Will this work, and it automatically detects and uses the embedded key?
Hmm, and I'm assuming that while using 7, you would have the bios set to Legacy? What if I were to use a retail 8.1 Pro disc, would I also use Legacy, since the embedded key wouldn't work for Pro...?

I have an issue with my Lenovo y510p. It has Windows 8.1 64-bit and the latest Nvidia Geforce drivers from the Nvidia website.
The problem is that the reported resolution is 1920x1080, but the Geforce Experience says it's 1536x864. Thinking it's a software issue with the GE software, I checked a few games-- Final Fantasy XI, Final Fantasy XIV (screenshot above), and Borderlands 2.
Setting them to windowed 1600x900 resolution goes beyond the screen. That's telling me it's beyond the 1536x864 resolution and somewhere on this laptop something is wrong.
This is both with and without the GT750M in SLI mode. I have tested both ways. I have also tried the GPU scaling options, but that didn't fix it either. I have also went to the Lenovo website and found a BIOS update for the second GT750M card, but they're the same BIOS versions so the video card didn't need updating.
Has anyone experience similar issues? I have so far found similar issues on the Lenovo forums, Geforce community forums, and the Intel forums, but no solution has ever been posted and none of them received replies.
The laptop is practically brand new, I got it for Christmas. -
I've got weird things happen on my y500 lately. I hope anyone can shine a light on this.
1. In Energy Management, setting the battery option to [Optimized Battery Health] discharges the battery even if you're plugged in. I tried this with and without my SLI 650M. And all power options do nothing(High Performance, balanced, Power saver) until the laptop is drained empty. An technician from Lenovo support came over today and changed the mobo, and still it happens. He called back to HQ and they said Optimized does drain but up til 60% and it charges back. Now I'm monitoring for any further changes.
2. Event viewer gives me hundreds of event warnings on the system saying my processor is limited by system firmware. This annoys me to no end because I thought I had an incompatible chipset driver. I reformatted numerous times with different drivers and it still does that. Current install is Windows 8.1 UEFI install with Lenovo Malaysia's support site drivers.
Does anyone else get these issues with their Y500's? -
-
Now, the only other nagging issue I have now is that whenever I enable the SLI 750M, laptop tends to freeze more often. Disable it, and the y510p is rock stable. I'm using the latest Nvidia drivers and doesn't seem to fix it. -
Hey all,
I just got my Y500 and I´m quite happy with it. Only problem is that I just wanted to buy the Ultrabay GT650m extension, as I have the DVD/BluRay drive, and had to realise that the only place to get it is on ebay for 200 Euros, what is too much for me as a student. So my question: does anyone know where to get the card cheaper, or is someone maybe willing to swap with my DVD-RW/BluRay drive+some money? I really want it, but its nowhere to get.. :/
Can anybody help me? -
You are in luck my friend, I was in the middle of posting my used GN36 650M ultrabay card on ebay. Due to the modifications I made (to make it fit in the y400) I'm planning to sell it for $100 + shipping.
Don't worry the mods aren't that severe, I simple trimmed the following pieces. You'll see that in my eBay pics.
-
Doing it over Ebay would be the safest way, but its more expensive...
EDIT: and if you have the Y400 means also that the Power adapter with 170W is not included, right? -
Take a look at my card yourself and compare it to the unmodified card here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/ide...-pictures-disassembled-y500-ultrabay-gpu.html
Lenovo Y500 GN36 Ultrabay 650M | eBay
Unfortunately I'm not selling the power adapter, but you can get a new 170W adapter from Lenovo for $30: IdeaPad 170W AC Adapter (UL) | Lenovo | (US)
Oh and if you want to buy, just buy it via eBay. -
Well, the problem is I live in Germany/ Denmark. Dont know if you are able to ship there and how expensive that would be?
-
Hmmm I'm not sure how much that would cost. I suppose I could check.
-
Well it seems as if everything together will get almost as expensive as if i'd buy it here on ebay.. Think I'll try to find one with the power adapter included and in Germany.
-
Good luck with your search.
-
Hey all,
Been out of the loop with the Y500 for a while, just wondering if anyone's found a way to activate the HD4000 integrated gpu? My Y500 has been great so far, would just be nice to have some extra battery life.
My Y500:
1080p
i7 3630QM
16GB Ram
128GB ADATA mSATA SSD (OS + Apps)
1TB HDD (Storage)
2x GT750M SLI -

Anyone willing to upload Y500's recovery to some torrent or my server please ?
I am willing to pay via Paypal. I badly need it, I installed windows 7 after deleting all partitions and now want windows 8 back
P.S I only need a file named install.wim, which would be around 3Gb-4Gb. If I get this, I will be able to install Windows 8.
Anyone ? -
Have you tried contacting Lenovo? I'm having a similar issue with my y400. I copied the original drive to a 500GB HDD, which changed the partition sizes so that now One Key Recovery doesn't work. Since I'll be buying some accessories from them soon I suppose I'll just ask for a recovery disk then.
