My y580 is out for delivery today as well. China to my doorstep in less than 4 days... That's not too shabby for free shipping. Well done Lenovo/UPS.
Could someone please confirm the HDD thickness? I'm guessing they're all the same, but mine is 500 GB 7200 RPM. I plan to replace this with a Crucial M4 and move the stock drive to an external enclosure that only supports 9.5 mm. I'm guessing the stock drive is 9.5 mm but would like to make sure before I order anything. I could measure myself when my computer finally arrives but that could be several painful hours from now.
Thanks!

Wow... I am insanely lucky. My laptop had a single dead pixel, and ordinarily lenovo wouldn't replace that. When I called about replacing it the person who answered was indian and could barely speak english. I almost hung up but decided I might as well stay on the line with him. And boy am I glad I did. He ended up telling me he was the manager, and because he liked me he could bypass everything and replace my laptop. We had to jump through a couple hoops though and I ended up talking to 3 different managers (tech, sales, returns) who each had to clear they're respective ends of it. New laptop just arrived and is in perfect condition. Best of all? When I shipped back the old laptop I didn't include the battery with it. I expected them to call me and tell me I had to give it back, but so far they haven't. I have two batteries now

The video card on a laptop is the biggest bottleneck in gaming performance, the processor on the Y580 will have no trouble running any game.
Use this site to view average FPS on various games: Computer Games on Laptop Graphic Cards - Notebookcheck.net Tech -
edit: I already use notebookcheck.net, but use this:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-660M.71859.0.html
link instead, scroll down, it shows the fps for games only for the 660m. What I'm looking for is performance straight from the Y580, with driver information. -

As far as how games run Big Kahuna, the consensus is that it will run most games on the highest settings, and the few games that are very intensive on medium. At the very least it will run everything on medium without lagging. -

Peaking out the window every-time i hear a car go by hoping that it is the ups. I like a kid a Christmas. Did people got their y580 yet that suppose to come today?

They were meant to send a courier to pick it up from me today as well and they didn't. They're pretty useless, only saving grace is that they've offered me a 10% discount for when I order after my refund. That's likely to be 2 weeks away though and they'll probably deny ever saying that =/ -
Hey everyone, I just received my Y580 today but I am having trouble burning DVDs. I can burn CDs no problem, but when I try to burn a dvd it fails as soon as it starts to write. I have tried nero, imgburn, windows and cyberlink power2go and they all failed at burning the dvd.
Does anyone else have this issue? -

Here's my steam library: http://steamcommunity.com/id/y2bd/games
If you want performance tests for any of those games, feel free to ask. I also have access to a Diablo 3 trial code, am planning on installing Tribes Ascend (and Planetside 2 once the early beta ships!) and plan on running Minecraft with those high-end shader mods (which kill my current computer). -

I want to mention couple words about click-pad. If you are former or current mac user, the track-pad in Lenovo Y580 works exactly same as macbook. As everyone else have mentioned it is smooth so it might take some time to get used to it. You don't have to press hard for the left click, just a tap of finger will do it. 2 finger scrolling works nice, too. I wish they had implemented textured surface in the track-pad as everything else is so great about this laptop. I think it's not that bad so I can live with that.

Tbh, 100 pound saving is quite huge, 1000 pounds is quite overpriced. -
Once I get my Y580, what should I do out of the box? Charge it all night first, or do a clean install- what drivers should I install/uninstall and in what order? Thanks

Can anyone link me to the thread that explained how to open up the laptop and switch do a ssd/hdd/odd switch? I'm getting ready to do it but can't find the link.

Will let you know if I find anything and also would definitely appreciate it if you get hold of one.

I saw that someone got a Y580 from Best Buy, but on their site the $1099 model shows out of stock. Anyone know what is up with that? How can it be Out of Stock if it just came out? Is it becuase Best Buy hasn't gotten them in yet? Anyone else get one from Best Buy?

Hi guys,
I just got my 580 today and I seem to have trouble. Does the graphics look terrible on first boot up? I can hardly read anything on my screen. How do I switch it over to the 660?
Thanks -

What were people saying about the 1920x1080 screens having non readable text?
-
Just got here, and am now typing on it. I haven't done any performance tests yet, but luckily I don't have any build problems (janky keyboard, bad screen, etc). Oddly enough the F2 and Up Arrow keys were loose, but I was able to snap them back in easy enough.
Currently letting Ninite (software packager) do its magic, will report back later if anything comes up!
Not really liking the trackpad though. Oh well, minor inconvenience for me. -
-
Is anyone dvd drive kind of loose when you take it out? Also did anyone had problems creating the recovery disks?
-
Can anyone else confirm that their space bar is not fully backlit like the other keys? Mine is not really illuminated all the way around, only under the left front. Thanks. -
-
Can anyone created the recovery disk?
-
-
For those who want to make recovery disk, use maximum speed to created it.

How are the temps while gaming on the bottom of the unit? Is it possible to game while actually using the y580 on the lap/legs?
I had a y470 (with the 550M), which was great, low temps, could use as a laptop easily, even in shorts. -
Hello everybody.
First of all I like to thank everyone for their questions/answers, comments and suggestions. This is the first time I've ever created an account in any forum. I found this one very helpful. I just want to contribute to some of the (simple) questions I've seen hanging around.
I had an 17in HP DV9000 since 2007 until it broke recently (around May 2012). So my wife and I agreed that I needed a new laptop so I could keep working at home with my thesis and whatnot. (She has a 13in MacBook Pro from last year btw). But we don't have any desktop.
After days and days of searching for a high performance laptop under a certain budget (no more than $1200) I decided for Lenovo. (I checked Lenovo, ASUS, MSI, Sager, Clevo, HP, DELL, etc, etc)
Time of purchase-to-delivery:
I bought my Ideapad Y580 through Lenovo webpage (US) on June 13. I got it on July 11. So 4 WEEKS WAITING!!! It was scheduled to be shipped on July 4 from China.
USB:
Mine came with 3 USB 3.0 and 1 USB 2.0
Online chat experience:
Before a made my choice of buying this laptop I decided to chat (through Lenovo webpage) with someone to ask some aspects of the model. From that experience I learned that the information they give you can be misleading. For example, the guy told me that this model doesn't come with backlit keyboard. Luckily, he was wrong. He also told me that if I want to upgrade my RAM from 8 to 16 Gb I might have to change something in the BIOS.
Performance:
Well, I'm sorry to disappoint almost everyone, but unfortunately I won't talk about games (I wish I could... I put more than 200 hrs playing Skyrim in my Xbox 360 ;P). Anyways, my experience is with Matlab. With the desktop I have at my office (at college) can't remember all the details but is a DELL Pentium D Series, it takes about 8 minutes to run a code. With the laptop HP I used to have ( Product Specifications - HP technical support (Andorra - English)) [but with 4Gb instead of 2] it took me more than 4 minutes to run the same code. With the Ideapad Y580 it takes me 39 seconds. For me that's pretty amazing. And that's what I was looking for (plus a nice GPU so I can play nice game in a future).
Installed programs:
For those who asked if it comes with a lot of crap (software), I would say... maybe... Acrobat reader, ooVoo, McAfee, Chrome, IE, 4 stuff from Lenovo, Cyberlink, and so on.
Other features:
I'm ain't no expert on computers, but compared with my previous laptop (the HP) I can say that the trackpad and keyboard feels smoother and better. The trackpad has similar functions of those of the MacBook e.g. two fingers to scroll up n down, three fingers to go back n forth through webpages, etc. The display for me is bright, crisp and sharp (1920 x 1080). I didn't feel the need of amplifying the font size. I like the big space. The backlit of the keyboard does its work.
Other comments/questions:
In a future I'll buy an mSATA to install the OS and use the 500GB as storage. In the near future I want to buy a a laptop cooler to avoid any problems with the heat... I know there is a thread on that topic, but since I started writing here I will ask anyways so... which of these two you recommend:
1. Cooler Master NotePal U3 Amazon.com: Cooler Master NotePal U3 Laptop Cooling Pad with Three Configurable 80mm Fans (R9-NBC-8PCK-GP): Electronics
2. Cooler Master NotePal X3 Amazon.com: Cooler Master NotePal X3 Laptop Cooling Pad with 200mm Blue LED Fan (R9-NBC-NPX3-GP): Electronics
Sorry for the long post... Thanks for reading -
I am typing this from my new y580

Does anyone know how to install lenovo enhanced experience 3 on windows 7 after a clean install. I can't find it in the drivers page
-
Alright so I'm sorry to report that something has gone haywire in my y580.
Yesterday everything was beautiful. Set up windows, deleted some bloatware, was on Skype for a few hours and played Skyrim for a few as well. Yesterday I closed the laptop and put it to sleep at least once and had no problem opening it back up and logging on. Last night I closed the laptop like normal and went to bed.
This morning when I opened the laptop I could hear the hard drive starting up and it seems everything is booting normally but the screen is black. I plugged in an external monitor and at first the log in screen appeared on that, but then I unplugged it and plugged it back in and there was no signal. Then I restarted the laptop with the monitor plugged in and it took easily 3-5 minutes to boot which is far longer than it did previously. Then it brought me to the lenovo welcome screen and I logged into my windows account (all on the external monitor of course), but after that the screen is black with a white cursor. So where we are right now is y580 with black, completely unresponsive screen, and a Dell monitor with a black screen and the ability to move the cursor like normal. Also it appears the computer is going to sleep like normal because if I don't touch the cursor for some time the monitor goes into power saver mode and I have to move the cursor on my laptop for it to come back. (Potentially useless note: the function key appears to work like normal or at least I can turn the backlight on and off.)
I have already tried unplugging it, taking out the battery, holding the power button, and putting it all back.
Any suggestions? I'm pretty frustrated because yesterday I had a beautifully operating machine and now I have so much black screen ahah. -
Can someone tell me why people are going to do a clean install?

The tech support chat is not available on weekends. I can call support but I'd obviously rather not with Lenovo's track record. I will if I have to.
Just tried booting into safe mode, since booting is taking so long and I can't indefinitely sit here and hit the F8 key I have abandoned that for now.
