Thanks for the tip. I made mine this morning. It took 1 hour and 15 minutes and required 3 DVDs. The optical drive performed flawlessly at 4x, and the process was very simple.

Last night I watched a movie (Anonymous), and I must say I am very pleased with the y580 so far. The speakers exceeded my expectations: sufficiently loud and clear. Characters in this movie were whispering in one scene and sword fighting in the next, but this range was not problematic. Music sounds fine too, although a decent set of external speakers or headphones will always win here.

My previous laptop had 1024x768 resolution, so the FHD screen is a new experience and a joy to use. I am very please with the brightness, clarity, and real estate available. In fact, I watched my movie on one half of the screen with a browser on the other. Gone are the days of having to side scroll every website (but I bet most people have owned a widescreen laptop before, haha). My screen is a bit cool/blue like others have pointed out, but otherwise it looks nice.

I'm also adjusting to the keyboard pretty quickly. It does have a tiny bit of flex on the top left, but not enough to bother me. Backlight is great, though the brightness is fixed (at a good level). Very pleased to see that the touchpad is easily disabled with a key combo as this is essential for gaming.

I guess my only complaint would be the lack of hardware audio buttons. There is a hardware mute button, but no volume up/down?! Who the hell approved that goofy decision?

Oh, and I'm pretty disappointed with the speed of the system/startup from the factory. Bloatware annoys me to no end, and there's an average amount of it here. Once my SSD arrives I will perform a fresh install of Windows and this beauty will be streamlined and very quick!

When you open the chat support system is asks "what you want to chat about" and if you select Tech Support it says that it is only available on weekdays.

I'm guessing you've tried fn+f2 or fn+f3 to make sure the screen just hasn't turned off. Worth a try, but these settings probably don't persist after a restart.

Edit: Whoops, missed your original description of the problem. I'm not help.

I called Lenovo tech support. They want me to call post sales on Monday and have them send me a replacement.

    This is not fun =/

To be fair the woman I talked to was helpful, it's just she thinks for sure something was loose and I am better off with a completely new laptop. We'll see if post sales is equally as helpful.

I have read horror stories but really hoped that it was just because the people who have issues are the ones who are going to be vocal (rightfully so). Now I am beginning to wonder does anyone ever get a Lenovo laptop without some sort of issue within a few months of purchasing? Is there such a thing as opening a Lenovo laptop and just having it work?

I'm hoping that I make it through the Lenovo support team still wanting this laptop ugh. Anyone know how long it takes to send a replacement? Will this be another 2 weeks of waiting for one to ship from China? *frustrated*

Bro, there is a volume up and down button. It's the "Fn" key plus the right and left arrow keys. There is also play, pause, fast foward, and rewind keys, but there all done with a combination of the "Fn" key and another key. It works perfectly fine.

I have another question though. When I'm browsing the web (using Chrome), when I accidentally close a tab and want to open it up again (in effect opening up the last closed tab) I always press ctrl+shift+ "T". However, rather than bring up the last closed tab, on this laptop this brings up another screen that is seemingly allowing me to switch wallpapers? Any idea on how to get ctrl+shift+T to do what it is supposed to do? Thanks!

I still had problem created my recovery disks using DvDs.May I ask what kind of brand and type of Dvd are you using dvd-r or dvd+r. Also how were you able to get 4x as a option. I just got 2x and 8x each fail for dvds. However it work for cd, but I now have 18 cds for the recovery disk...

First impression, the laptop y580 is really fast and the graphic card is play a game called the last remnant very smooth without having any lags like its' xbox version.

Also the HD does not get anywhere above 50C when I playing video game with a u3 laptop cooler.

Also did anyone get that veriface thing to work

It never did work for me when I would try it. Kind of annoying but it didn't seem very useful anyways to me.

Anyone care to explain what Intel Rapid Start/Storage does? I've looked it up but I'm still fairly confused. I'm currently using a Crucial M4 128gb as my main, and the 1tb it came with as just a general storage. Should I install Rapid Start/Storage? Also, where do you download OneKey Theater? The official driver page doesn't have it and I now have a useless button which is annoying me.

Do you guys keep your battery in if you are plug in for weeks and during gaming or do u take it out?

I keeping it out to preserve battery life since I always have it plug in, but i do not know which is better? I basically have it plug in always...

I didn't remove it because sometimes notebook needs to be hooked somewhere else and I don't want to turn it off only because of this.

But that shortens battery life. If you have cable plug-in with battery installed then it charge battery and if it is 100% and it stops it uses battery for short time and again wants to charge it. It's bad for battery's health.
To preserve battery for as long as you can it should be putted somewhere cold. You could for example wrap it in some plastic bag and put in the fridge.

Intel Rapid Start - it works like hibernation but it's faster to turn notebook on.
Intel Rapid Storage - from what I understand it just way of creating RAID. Probably like Windows where you can quite easy create RAID 0 but Intel's driver gives other RAID options. There's also something about higher performance when HDD is using NQC in AHCI mode. So basically you won't get anything from it because Y580 can't use RAID and NCQ should be done automatically.

I don't use anything but sleep so I didn't install Rapid Start - didn't need it and didn't want more apps. But you can install if you want. I don't remember if I've installed Rapid Storage. If drivers were on Lenovo's CD then there's a great probability that I did install them. You can give it a try because drivers try to detect compatible system before installation proceed. And if it succeed you can only benefit from it. :)

Anyone have any remarks on the 5400 rpm drive in the laptop? Am I better off with a 1TB 5400 rpm drive and adding an mSATA, a 500GB 7200 rpm drive and adding an mSATA, or will the performance be similar since the mSATA can be used for the OS and applications?

Ideally I'd just buy the 500GB drive and replace it with a 512GB or something 2.5" SSD and turn the included HDD into an external for backup, but it costs around $150-$200 more to do that than to just buy a 64GB or 128GB mSATA drive and a 1TB external, I believe.

I used Memorex DVD+RW, rated at 4x. Maybe that's something determined by the disk itself rather than the drive. If you actually loaded 18 CDs in there then you deserve a medal, haha!

Also, I got veriface working pretty much perfectly and very quickly, but I don't think I'll continue using it. I was impressed with it but just prefer to type in my password.

I'm doing the same thing, but with a 256 Crucial M4. I don't really need 512 on the laptop itself. It should work out very well.

The best solution would be replacing HDD with SSD but it's quite pricey ;)
I wouldn't put 7200rpm because of additional heat and noise. I would rather go for mSATA SSD for OS and some more used applications.

I have been using my laptop for a day now and I must say I am very pleased with it so far. Other than having a smooth track-pad, this laptop doesn't have any drawback. Track-pad is very responsive and accurate and it's not as bad as I thought in the beginning. I don't like the softwares came with this laptop though. List of bloatwares I don't like are
McAfee - I replaced with Avast
ooVoo - Not sure about this one. I will give it a try
    Power2Go - I prefer Imgburn.
Windows media player - Don't have a choice here but I will use Pot Player instead (This one is even better than VLC player, give it a try.)
Onekey recovery - I don't think this one supports network drive or NAS backup. let me know it it does or I will have to replace it with something else.
I like the fact that they included Microsoft office starter with this laptop. It's not the full office suit but enough for my basic needs.
I will keep you guys updating with my experience with Lenovo Y580...

Received the laptop on Friday, finally opened it a couple hours ago. Slotted the battery in, plugged in the A/C adapter, turned it on, and... nothing.

It turns on, but the screen is black, and nothing shows up. It eventually goes into standby mode, but that's it. Tried the Fn+F2 and F3 keys, as someone posted that earlier in the thread as a possible issue, but they have not fixed the problem.

Any ideas on what the issue could be?

EDIT: I hooked it up to an external display, and it runs through the external, but not the primary.

Anyone else having an issue where the laptop doesn't sleep when you close the lid? I never changed the power settings and when I went to check it was set to sleep on lid close; however, it doesn't do that.

I've tried setting it to shutdown or hibernate on lid close but that doesn't work either. Not sure if its an issue with the build of Windows 7 or not (it says I have the latest updates.) Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Does all y580 US model come with backlit keyboard? Particularly 209945U...

Would having mSata along with 7200RPM HDD going to have performance increase or its better to replace the HHD with SSD ? And is Intel Caching(SRT) on msata supported with Y580 BIOS?

    Thanks

From what I know all Y580 has backlit keyboard...but you can't be sure with all those versions around the world...

It's always better to use SSD instead of HDD when we speak of performance. But big SSDs aren't too cheap. ;) So good solution is to use smaller SSD for OS and HDD as big storage.

    Y580 doesn't support SRT.

Thanks for your response. I know there are many models but can some one tell me if 209945U which is US model has backlit? I dont see the option of backlit when choosing the laptop.

Would 7200RPM HDD + SATA 3 mSata SSD give a good performance or is it better I spend the money on a Sata3 SSD and replace it with the HDD?

I checked the more expensive models and all says No keyboard light.. Is there anything I am missing? Hidden section to add backlit keyboard option?

Could anyone advise what is the best mSata SATA3 SSD 120-128GB suitable with this laptop? Any specific type of mSata Sata3 compatible with Y580 ? I assume the port for mSATA and the port HDD is using ARE SATA3 .. Right?
Saw this model with good price and few good reviews, anyone tried it?

There is no hidden section to add Backlit keyboard. Y580 by default comes with Backlit keyboard. Just call them to confirm.

So I have already started having problems with Lenovo customer service. Today my laptop will at least start to boot (can see Lenovo screen and get to bios menu and safe mode but after login in regular windows and safe mode it is still a black screen with movable cursor) so I called tech support back to see if they would walk me through the options they had wanted to yesterday in the bios menu and safe mode and the tech (different from yesterday) was extremely dismissive. Literally said "You already called and we told you to call post sales tomorrow there is nothing we can do." Seriously nothing you can do? I understand that it is probably best to replace the laptop at this point, but can it really hurt to at least tell me what you were planning on trying yesterday? At least for my peace of mind haha. What if it is a bad driver or a virus and safe mode could help get rid of it? Again I think it is best to just replace the computer but even if so there is no reason for the tech to be as dismissive, rude, and patronizing as he just was. I feel like I was told "I already said no cookies now go clean your room!"

I guess this is Lenovo's famous customer service. From what I've read I am expecting far worse from post sales tomorrow.

    (highly frustrated =/)

That's right. I posted previously that I used their webpage chat service before buying the laptop, and the guy told me (after he check for the info) that the Y580 does not come with backlit keyboard but in a future they will. So yes, they have no idea what they're selling ;)

Seems to me like an OS issue. Try to test it with another operating system (with another hdd, an older windows, linux etc.). I think the laptop may be just fine, and the OS is done, and you may be sending a perfectly good unit back.

Edit: Had an issue before myself where I had to format the hdd and install windows myself because I was getting so many weird errors on the pre-installed one. I had no issues after the format and fresh install.

Edit 2: "This morning when I opened the laptop I could hear the hard drive starting up and it seems everything is booting normally but the screen is black. "

Oops, sorry. I guess it's hardware issue then...

Just pulled the trigger on my Y580. Estimated shipping date is the 23rd. Can't wait. :)

What SSD would you guys recommend as a boot drive + couple small programs?

Can anyone advise if using mSata and 7200rpm HHD on this specific laptop causes a major heat issue?

I am stuck between choosing SSD or using mSata and 7200rpm HD on this laptop.

    My concerns with mSata are:
    - Additional heat cause by mSata
    - Lower performance than SSD , OS installed on mSata, HDD for storage ( which I might be wrong )

I have these SSDs in mind, and the Mushkin mSata mentioned in previous post.

*Crucial M4 CT256M4SSD2 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive

Which path to choose which is better in long term (2-3 years)??
    Please help :)

    I went with the crucial m4, except I got a 128gb instead of 256.

The Crucial has the lowest listed r/w speeds of most of the major SSD choices (although it is the cheapest usually). How much does that factor in for real-world usage?

I'm not knowledgeable enough about SSD vs mSata but between the 2 SSDs, if cost isn't an issue, then definitely go for the Samsung 830 since it's the gold standard for SSD right now. In fact, it's what I have in my Y580 right now!

Let me add that I'm also one of the people who received my Y580 on Friday. My Samsung SSD arrived on the same day. The next day, I removed the HDD (which went into a HDD enclosure), put in the SSD, did a clean install on the SSD, and now everything is blazing fast.

Is this the drive you have? Did you need to buy a caddy to make it fit into the Y580 or not?
