Hello. I just picked up a y580 from frys (don't know the model number but it's the one with a bluray drive and FHD screen) and am having some problems. It seems that my nvidia 660m does not work. Any time an application tries to use the dedicated graphics, I get a message telling me the display drivers have failed. Now, I've updated the drivers and tried using all other drivers available on lenovos's site, nvidia's site, nvidia manager, and device manager. Each time, same problem. Either sound but no display, or a complete crash and even a couple of blue screen. I'm wondering if it's a hardware issue or software.
-
Weird. You could try to uninstall Intel and nVidia display drivers and install them again. First Intel's and then nVidia's. If that wouldn't help it could be hardware issue.
-
At this point I'm more or less assuming that it's a hardware issue and I'll exchange it tonight. Nice thing about buying it from a store is I don't have to deal with shipping when something like this does happen. Other than this issue, the laptop feels solid. I'm very glad I chose to splurge on a model with a FHD screen though. -
A mate of mine did the exact same, but no luck for him either.
It is a long and painful wait... -
Kingsoft PC Doctor - CNET Download.com
you can try it and compare both -

Mine just changed status to "Released to Manufacturing" after a couple days of waiting... -
I purchased mine on 6/13 and got it on 7/11 -

Link for SSD performance hierarchy ( link).
More importantly, Samsung's SSD has very good reliability. No horror news like DOA units that you might hear around with OCZ.
Nope, you only need a screwdriver(well, to be safe, it might depend on the original HDD that you have, mine is WD5000BEKT)
My guess is Lenovo start building the machines once they accumulate enough orders. If you're lucky, you might purchase it right before they have enough orders and it'll ship pretty quickly. -
But I think others had it in 2 or 3 weeks. For what I've read in this forum I'm only one of the few (If not the only one) who had to wait 4 weeks. So hopefully you'll have it soon. I bought it through Lenovo US webpage. And like others said, it depends on which model you selected. -
Could someone do a tutorial as to how to install an SSD on this laptop for us amateurs? It seems like a lot of people would be interested (me included).

For those who had the 7200rpms, maybe this account for all y580. I can hear the sound of my fan on the y580 at idle. It not super loud or anything, but I assuming that people with y580 hear a quiet noise coming from the y580?

After waiting for a week with no idea of when it was going to ship from Lenovo, I cancelled my order and bought one at Fry's. FHD, 8GB Ram, 1TB 5400RPM. $1080.
FRYS.com | LENOVO
$1199.99 on Frys, they price match. I just used Google shopping with their model number.

It seems that my gpu driver stop working in a middle of a game. Did this happen to anyone else?
-
Guess nobody saw my post so I'll post it again. I'm having a problem with the laptop not going to sleep when I close the lid. I just got the laptop a few days ago and hadn't touched the battery settings. When I did go to check them I saw that it was indeed configured to sleep when my lid closes, but it doesn't actually seem to work.
Do you guys think its a problem with the sensor? I tried updating windows to the latest build but that doesn't seem to work. -

I had ordered the 500 GB 7200rpm, 1080p model 209945U. -
I keep getting random BSOD's and my desktop goes black and acts like something is full screen. I have to alt tab to switch programs.
Reinstalling the One Recovery crap fixed the black screen issue.
No idea on the BSOD I need to check it out.

OK so it is a NVidia driver causing my BSOD. I just downloaded the 03Jul2012 Beta driver so I'll give that a go. -
Just checked quidco again about half hour ago but nothing.

For those who have the 7200rpms/ 500GB the operation temperature is 0 to 60C.
I had attach the drive specification sheet for those who want to check...Attached Files:

That one you posted has a 768P screen. I think Frys owes you some money. They price matched you for the 20994 5U and you got a 20994 2U -

209942U with 1920x1080 screen 1TB @ 5400 HDD. -
I'm kicking myself for not price matching. Then again, I bought mine almost a month ago and not too many other vendors were selling them then. -

I replaced the HDD (WD5000BEKT) with a Samsung 830 256GB SSD. There will be some differences depending on whether you want to fresh install, clone, swap your HDD to ODD and put in the SSD at the HDD, or install a new mSata. My experience here is strictly for replacing the HDD and doing a fresh install on the SSD.
Checklist:
1) Screwdriver
2) OS installation media (DVD or USB)
3) A copy of the files in the H: drive (Lenovo) containing an applications folder and a drivers folder.
Steps to replace HDD with SSD:
1) Read and follow the instructions at pg 35 of the Lenovo IdeaPad Y480/Y580 manual.
2) The manual is a pretty accurate depiction of what you need to do except for step 5. Do not pull the tab upwards as shown in the picture! To take the HDD out, first make sure that the SATA connector is facing you. You'll notice some extra space at the other end of the HDD. Now, pull the tab towards the end with the extra space to slide the HDD free from the connector.
3) Follow the rest of the steps to replace the HDD with the SSD.
Clean install:
1) Boot with your installation media in place.
2) Install OS (I'll assume it's Windows 7).
3) Install LAN or WLAN from the Drivers folder that you back up earlier.
3) Once you're done, first thing is to get an Antivirus software (or download a new browser first because IE sucks). I use AVG.
4) Go to Windows Update, look at the optional update and check the options for Intel graphics drivers. Install updates and restart.
5) Install the drivers from the drivers folder and whatever apps you want from the application folder.
What I installed:
Yes - AHCI, Audio, Bluetooth, camera, card reader, hotfix, LAN, lockkey, MEI, Touchpad, VGA(Nvidia only), WLAN
Not sure - IRST(Intel Rapid Storage Technology). Advice anyone?
Other stuff that I installed -
OneKeyTheater. Not sure what the difference is but I like the movie option.
OneKeyRecovery. I don't like having useless buttons on my laptop.
Energy Management. I like to see the brightness and loudness level when adjusting through Fn + arrow keys.
Did not install
Wireless Display. To connect laptop with TV
Wireless Music - to connect laptop with audio system (the JBL speakers are already awesome enough!) -
my music will overcome it, I just want to know if i have a faulty fan... -
-
Hmm, I think I a bit paranoid about having a new laptop. It a great laptop and everything seem to be working fine...
Also, where is the gpu located on the back of the laptop and I assuming the bottom vents are intake vents right?...
Please anyone, answer the question of paranoid laptop owner... -

Also I getting a problem that my gtx660M will not be recognized after a while and had to restart to get it to work. Does anyone else had this problem? -

I can recall there was an additional discount ($40 or 50) on the current sales if you login to lenovo account via a certain page. Does anyone know what was it?
-
Hmm I can hear my fan even when I am idle, the fan is a bit louder than my other computer. Should I be worry?

So I Exchanged my first y580 for the same model at frys. My first one was in fact faulty, so the exchanges it with no problems. My new model works great, and I haven't even updated the drivers yet. I wanted to make sure my last one wasn't a driver issue before I updated them. So, here's to a good long lifespan for this y580.
-
Nope that didn't help anything. Also my hard drive is at 54C when it idle with means something...
