Hello. I just picked up a y580 from frys (don't know the model number but it's the one with a bluray drive and FHD screen) and am having some problems. It seems that my nvidia 660m does not work. Any time an application tries to use the dedicated graphics, I get a message telling me the display drivers have failed. Now, I've updated the drivers and tried using all other drivers available on lenovos's site, nvidia's site, nvidia manager, and device manager. Each time, same problem. Either sound but no display, or a complete crash and even a couple of blue screen. I'm wondering if it's a hardware issue or software.
-
Weird. You could try to uninstall Intel and nVidia display drivers and install them again. First Intel's and then nVidia's. If that wouldn't help it could be hardware issue.
-
I've already tried that. I did a clean install of intel and nvidia drivers.
At this point I'm more or less assuming that it's a hardware issue and I'll exchange it tonight. Nice thing about buying it from a store is I don't have to deal with shipping when something like this does happen. Other than this issue, the laptop feels solid. I'm very glad I chose to splurge on a model with a FHD screen though. -
Called Lenovo UK this morning, and after a few transfers still ended up with no new code sadly.
A mate of mine did the exact same, but no luck for him either.
It is a long and painful wait... -
I tried to find something in their webpage, but didn't find anything. Anyway I decided to install Kingsoft PC Doctor which is free and it turns out (at least for me) that the boot time is reduced significantly compared to Lenovo EE 3.
Kingsoft PC Doctor - CNET Download.com
you can try it and compare both
-
Yeah, I would return it if I were you. I also picked up my Y580 from Fry's. I also returned my dv6 to Costco after dealing with HP's service center. I think the ease of using a brick n' mortar store to play around with a big-ticket product and return it if something goes wrong can't be underestimated.
-
Unless it's a store where you can't return but instead they tell you that if anything happens you've got to send it to Producer.
-
I'm just wondering but what is the exact timeline of you ordering the Y580, it being shipped, and finally at your door?
Mine just changed status to "Released to Manufacturing" after a couple days of waiting... -
Hi.
I purchased mine on 6/13 and got it on 7/11 -
Wow almost a month?? I can't imagine waiting 3 more weeks...
-
Yea, that's the one. I was too busy the last time I posted. So here's some additional info
Link for SSD performance hierarchy ( link).
More importantly, Samsung's SSD has very good reliability. No horror news like DOA units that you might hear around with OCZ.
Nope, you only need a screwdriver
(well, to be safe, it might depend on the original HDD that you have, mine is WD5000BEKT)
I ordered it on July 4th. It shipped from Shanghai July 10th, reached KY July 11th, stuck at clearing agency till late July 12th, and reached my doorstep (upstate NY) July 13th. Just to calm your concerns, the order status showed "Released to Manufacturing" from July 4th till it shipped on July 10th.
My guess is Lenovo start building the machines once they accumulate enough orders. If you're lucky, you might purchase it right before they have enough orders and it'll ship pretty quickly. -
Yes... but so far, the wait was worth it. I'm really enjoying this laptop.
But I think others had it in 2 or 3 weeks. For what I've read in this forum I'm only one of the few (If not the only one) who had to wait 4 weeks. So hopefully you'll have it soon. I bought it through Lenovo US webpage. And like others said, it depends on which model you selected. -
Could someone do a tutorial as to how to install an SSD on this laptop for us amateurs? It seems like a lot of people would be interested (me included).
-
I ordered on June 22. Still has not shipped...
-
For those who had the 7200rpms, maybe this account for all y580. I can hear the sound of my fan on the y580 at idle. It not super loud or anything, but I assuming that people with y580 hear a quiet noise coming from the y580?
-
After waiting for a week with no idea of when it was going to ship from Lenovo, I cancelled my order and bought one at Fry's. FHD, 8GB Ram, 1TB 5400RPM. $1080.
FRYS.com | LENOVO
$1199.99 on Frys, they price match. I just used Google shopping with their model number.
-
It seems that my gpu driver stop working in a middle of a game. Did this happen to anyone else?
-
Guess nobody saw my post so I'll post it again. I'm having a problem with the laptop not going to sleep when I close the lid. I just got the laptop a few days ago and hadn't touched the battery settings. When I did go to check them I saw that it was indeed configured to sleep when my lid closes, but it doesn't actually seem to work.
Do you guys think its a problem with the sensor? I tried updating windows to the latest build but that doesn't seem to work. -
Wow... I feel your pain... Mine was schedule to be shipped on July 4, and so they did... When are they supposed to ship yours? Once is shipped it only takes 5 business days. I had to wait a whole week cause July 4 was a Wednesday, so my laptop slept from Sunday through Tuesday in Louisville, KY.
-
So it looks like my order is going at the same time. Ordered it on 7/12, Released to Manufacturing today 7/16, should ship by the end of the week?
I had ordered the 500 GB 7200rpm, 1080p model 209945U. -
I keep getting random BSOD's and my desktop goes black and acts like something is full screen. I have to alt tab to switch programs.
Reinstalling the One Recovery crap fixed the black screen issue.
No idea on the BSOD I need to check it out.

OK so it is a NVidia driver causing my BSOD. I just downloaded the 03Jul2012 Beta driver so I'll give that a go. -
Yeah I gave them a shout but to no avail.
Just checked quidco again about half hour ago but nothing.
..................... *waits* -
For those who have the 7200rpms/ 500GB the operation temperature is 0 to 60C.
I had attach the drive specification sheet for those who want to check...Attached Files:

I have the 500GB 7200RPM, and don't hear a thing while plugged to the wall. When I'm on the battery I can hear a low humming. I don't know if this is pure coincidence though.
-
Hmmmm... are you sure that's the one you wanted? I paid around that price but I got a 500GB HDD @ 7200 RPMs and a 1080P HD screen.
That one you posted has a 768P screen. I think Frys owes you some money. They price matched you for the 20994 5U and you got a 20994 2U -
Are you sure box says FHD and it goes 1920x1080 resolution?

209942U is 1920x1080, which is the one I purchased from Fry's, check my HWiNFO64 output: http://forum.notebookreview.com/ideapad-essential/672154-y580-owners-thread-10.html#post8643014

Yup, you got a good deal when you price matched. Ignore the other poster, as he doesn't know what's he's talking about.
I'm kicking myself for not price matching. Then again, I bought mine almost a month ago and not too many other vendors were selling them then. -
I ordered the big daddy one from Lenovo.com, forgot the pn# and I don't care about looking it up, anyways they had no idea when it was going to ship at all. I needed a laptop ASAP since I sold my 2011 MBP, so I went ahead and got this one at Fry's. I triple checked the screen on all three models they had. Only one of them had the 1080P FHD monitor the 209942U. So I price matched to $1080. Now looking online I could have gone $1041. Oh well...

I'll share my experience but I have to stress this: This is my first time installing an SSD.
I replaced the HDD (WD5000BEKT) with a Samsung 830 256GB SSD. There will be some differences depending on whether you want to fresh install, clone, swap your HDD to ODD and put in the SSD at the HDD, or install a new mSata. My experience here is strictly for replacing the HDD and doing a fresh install on the SSD.
Checklist:
1) Screwdriver
2) OS installation media (DVD or USB)
3) A copy of the files in the H: drive (Lenovo) containing an applications folder and a drivers folder.
Steps to replace HDD with SSD:
1) Read and follow the instructions at pg 35 of the Lenovo IdeaPad Y480/Y580 manual.
2) The manual is a pretty accurate depiction of what you need to do except for step 5. Do not pull the tab upwards as shown in the picture! To take the HDD out, first make sure that the SATA connector is facing you. You'll notice some extra space at the other end of the HDD. Now, pull the tab towards the end with the extra space to slide the HDD free from the connector.
3) Follow the rest of the steps to replace the HDD with the SSD.
Clean install:
1) Boot with your installation media in place.
2) Install OS (I'll assume it's Windows 7).
3) Install LAN or WLAN from the Drivers folder that you back up earlier.
3) Once you're done, first thing is to get an Antivirus software (or download a new browser first because IE sucks
). I use
AVG.
4) Go to Windows Update, look at the optional update and check the options for Intel graphics drivers. Install updates and restart.
5) Install the drivers from the drivers folder and whatever apps you want from the application folder.
What I installed:
Yes - AHCI, Audio, Bluetooth, camera, card reader, hotfix, LAN, lockkey, MEI, Touchpad, VGA(Nvidia only), WLAN
Not sure - IRST(Intel Rapid Storage Technology). Advice anyone?
Other stuff that I installed -
OneKeyTheater. Not sure what the difference is but I like the movie option.
OneKeyRecovery. I don't like having useless buttons on my laptop.
Energy Management. I like to see the brightness and loudness level when adjusting through Fn + arrow keys.
Did not install
Wireless Display. To connect laptop with TV
Wireless Music - to connect laptop with audio system (the JBL speakers are already awesome enough!) -
It not really noticeable unless you really listen to it. It mostly the fan sound, it seems a bit noisy.
my music will overcome it, I just want to know if i have a faulty fan... -
Okay, gotcha. Just looking out.
-
Hmm, I think I a bit paranoid about having a new laptop. It a great laptop and everything seem to be working fine...
Also, where is the gpu located on the back of the laptop and I assuming the bottom vents are intake vents right?...
Please anyone, answer the question of paranoid laptop owner... -
I don't know why you are paranoid but yes, bottom vents are intake vents for CPU and GPU. Both are connected by one thermal heat pipe. CPU heats up when at 100% more then GPU so GPU get unnessessary heat. Best to run CPU at 99% to avoid running at turbo. Was that too much info? My bad for being paranoid myself...
-
That was great information. Seeing that there are three vents on the bottom, do you know which one is for the GPU and CPU? Or should I just put cooling directly on both vents close to the click-pad position(bottom vents of the y580...) I do not know if that clear enough. I guess I paranoid because the laptop cost a lot of money and I rather get things fix now than later....
Also I getting a problem that my gtx660M will not be recognized after a while and had to restart to get it to work. Does anyone else had this problem? -
FYI, here's the mobo for the Y580:
-
FYI that is the Y480 motherboard as it lacks the 3rd pci-e port for the tv tuner card and because the copper pipe on the gpu is smaller the y 580 gpu heat pipe is significantly borader as the gpu is more powerful
-
I have the same problem. After installing the latest driver (304.79), it's working fine now but I haven't run my laptop long enough to be able to tell conclusively that it's fixed.
-
I can recall there was an additional discount ($40 or 50) on the current sales if you login to lenovo account via a certain page. Does anyone know what was it?
-
Hmm I can hear my fan even when I am idle, the fan is a bit louder than my other computer. Should I be worry?
-
I never hear the fan when the notebook is idling either when it is sitting on top of my U3 cooler or on top of a desk in a library. Open up taskmanager and see what process is eating up your CPU. Or, is the 660M left on?
-
Nothing eating my cpu, I believe the 660m is left on. I going to do a clean wipe and see what up
-
So I Exchanged my first y580 for the same model at frys. My first one was in fact faulty, so the exchanges it with no problems. My new model works great, and I haven't even updated the drivers yet. I wanted to make sure my last one wasn't a driver issue before I updated them. So, here's to a good long lifespan for this y580.
-
Nope that didn't help anything. Also my hard drive is at 54C when it idle with means something...
-
This is what I did, except I used a Crucial m4 128gb instead. One thing I don't really get though... When I adjust my brightness the first click up goes 4 sections, and the next one goes 2. After that it gets brighter by 1. This wasn't happening until I did a fresh install. Does it happen to you?
-
No, my brightness level goes up by 1 section with each push of the up arrow button. My hunch says it has to do with the hotfix but don't take my word for it. Ask around if other people have similar issues.
