    Wow, thanks a lot!

Another quick question for you guys:

Are you guys getting better performance with the newer Nvidia drivers for the gtx 660m? I'm still using the stock video driver that came with the laptop since I'm afraid if I update it the performance for some of my games will be adversely affected. I believe someone in this thread posted earlier that this had happened to them.

I couldn't even load Tribes Ascend until I updated to the newest beta drivers. Since then, no problems at all with Skyrim or Tribes. You can always revert back easily enough.

    Hi!
I have Y580 since yesterday and I wanted to play FIFA 12 on it (origin).
So I played very nice, no lags etc. And later it lags as hell, I can't run or shoot without a HUGE hilarious lag. I turned in the NVIDIA Control Panel (Processor NVIDIA) globally. In the battery gauge I turned the switchable graphics, also I have the newest graphic drivers and it lags a bit less now, but still laggy as hell. Also I ran 3D Mark 11 and here are results :

    Score
    P2364 3DMarks
    Graphics Score
    2149
    Physics Score
    7080
    Combined Score
    1894
I don't know if it is good or not. Please help.

Hello, could you please tell me where you found installer for OneKey Theater? I recently performed a clean install and I've got everything working well so far except for this (can't find it online except for older laptops, and it isn't compatible).

Also, what exactly is LockKey? Not much information on that one.

Bummer that the on screen display is managed by Lenovo's Energy Management software... I decided that it was silly to have two power managers, and I'll have to do without the OSD.

I'm now using a 256 GB Crucial M4, and I can go from power on to desktop in around 20 seconds (including time to type in my big, complicated password). Impressive!

Assuming you didn't wipe your original HDD clean, it's located there at drive H: (Lenovo). Look under drivers -> OneKey Theater.

I'm not really sure about LockKey either but I assume, as its name implies, it has to do with the lock keys (caps, scroll, num). Unless someone tells me otherwise, I have it installed.

Besides the on screen display of brightness and loudness level, Lenovo's Energy Management also allows you to set to battery protection mode where if your Y580 is usually plugged into A/C power, the battery only charges to 60%. This prolongs your battery life.

Totally agree with the SSD! Being able to look at Email inbox in 20 secs from boot is awesome!

Y580 with i7 3610QM and GTX 660M owners, do you experience automatically shutdown due to overheating issue when you play heavy games like Starcraft 2 or Skyrim with maximum settings for a long time?

I applied the hotfix as well, but my screen brightness adjusts perfectly with the fn key (even without Lenovo's Energy Management to display on screen). I have 12 levels of brightness.

I'm sure this has been asked a million times, but does the "estimated ship date" actually mean anything? It took me 6 days to order because Lenovo has no idea what they're doing and couldn't figure out how to run my debit card (I actually got transferred to the Dell Finance department (!!) at one point from Lenovo). I was finally able to place an order on the 12th which said it'd ship "on or before" the 20th, but now it says estimated ship date as the 25th... how long does it take for these guys to put a computer in the mail?

If something goes wrong, is Lenovo customer support a pain to deal with, or am I better off buying the laptop from a brick and mortar store like BestBuy (basically same laptop and price)? Keep in mind I'll be a college student so I would need the quickest turnaround possible.

I'd advise going brick and mortar, I'm really not enjoying dealing with Lenovo customer services here in the UK, or the useless courier they chose to pick up my faulty Y580 =/

I also placed an order on 7/12 and it went to "Released to Manufacturing" on 7/16 with an estimated ship date of 7/23.

Today, 7/18, the status changed to "In Production" and the estimated ship date changed to 7/18. An estimated delivery date popped up as well (was blank previously) of 7/25.

For reference I ordered the 209945U with the 500GB 7200 RPM HDD.

Only problem is a warranty from them is wayyy more. BestBuy charges $100 just for one year (and that's after $100 off), no other stores around me. NewEgg charges $80 for two years but I'm still dealing with the shipping and all that so it's probably no different. Lenovo offers warranty extensions for cheap, so I guess that's my best bet? Sigh.

Hi guys, I just found a y580 on newegg.com with a 64gb ssd and 750gb hdd for $1099. What i'd like to know is the 64gb ssd used as a boot drive or is it used for intel's srt? Newegg's customer service couldn't tell me and I can't find this config on lenovo's site. Any help would be appreciated!

    Hello everyone,

I am ordering an IdeaPad Y580 209948U tonight. Here are the full specs (Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 Laptop, 209948U, Dawn Gray, 3rd Gen Intel Core i7-3610QM Processor, 8GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, 15.6 HD Display, NVIDIA GeForce GTX660M 2GB Graphics, DVD Recordable, 802.11 b/g/n, Windows 7 Home Premium, Webcam & Bluetooth).

Can anyone with a similar model let me know the estimated shipping date to Mountain View, California?

I will not be available in MV, Cal after 10th of August...so I don't want to miss it. Hence I am asking you people about it. Lenovo's shipping date is random and quiet misleading hence I'm not following it.

    Thanks!

Finally got my Y580. The reviews posted by the owners here have covered almost everything. I will just add some other feedback.

    1. 1080p screen is great. Color saturation is good and viewing angles are excellent. It's glossy the way I like it and HD pictures look great.

    2. Keyboard is built well but the clickpad is just so so. I like the dv6 mousepad better. The clickpad feels a little cheap when you press it.

    3. Is there a hardisk light? I can't find it. If they omitted it, it's a basic mistake for me. The hardisk is quiet so I don't know if there is any activity or not.

    4. It only comes with 2 speakers but it sounds good. But 4 speakers would have been better. I recommend to use Movie or Intelligent mode for the sound. It makes a big difference!

    5. The power adapter is smaller and lighter than dv6 but the wire is thinner. I think the thicker wire of dv6 would last longer.

    6. The chassis is solid. Didn't notice any flex on the keyboard nor the lid. The metal finish of dv6 is a little better. It's smoother and easier to clean.

Will comment on the heat later since I haven't game on it yet. But it's very cool on normal office use. Overall it's a great buy and would highly recommend it.

    Hi guys.

I'm interested to buy a Lenovo Ideapad Y580 laptop, but i have a doubt.

The Ideapad Y570 or Ideapad Z80 have a thermal management software and a button associated with this feature, but the Ideapad Y580 don't have the button and looking the Ideapad Y580 guide i don't see any reference to the Thermal Management Software.

You know how it's done (or make) the management of the cooling fans of the Ideapad Y580? Also uses the Thermal Management Software?

    Thanks

i dont think the y580 has thermal management software but it has an al copper heat-sync so heat dissipation is better. if there is thermal software its integrated with lenovo's power management software i think

Some of the features (I don't know if all) have been rolled into Lenovo energy management tool. Like someone said earlier, the heat dissipation on the Y580 is good with its large copper heatsink. The CPU has yet to go above 80C when running games I bought from Steam the past week. Whereas, the dv6 I returned earlier ramped up to >90C when using an emulator like Dolphin.

Ah ok, i don't know that.
But into Lenovo Energy Management Tool there are options like Standard Mode, Super Silent Mode, Efficent Thermal Dissipation Mode and Performing Dust Cleaning, present in Thermal Management Software? Or it's all automatic depends the load of the cpu?

    Hi Venomal;

If you'll buy it from Lenovo website, the time depends. From what i've if read here it takes from 2 to 4 weeks from the time of purchase to the arrival. It ships from China, then Alaska, and then in your case probably will go to California (mine went from Alaska to KY, then CT, and finally RI). So is a wild guess when you'll receive yours. Only few people had it in less than two weeks. Once is shipped (is shipped through UPS) it takes about 5 business days.

The Dust Cleaning is included in the y580 energy management software. However, the different modes listed above that are specifically tied to thermal management are not. Still, the amount of heat generated it dependent upon CPU and GPU load (more of the former if using integrated graphics). The Y580 is silent and cool when doing general tasks. But to answer your question, I do not see those specific thermal modes listed anywhere.

So do you recommend to use the gtx all the time instead of the integrated graphics to keep the cpu cooler?

    Hi,
I'm getting really bad scores in 3d mark vantage for cpu (~15,000) and it's telling me that's really low for what my CPU should be, I'm looking in CPU-z and the bus is running at only 98-100mhz. Could my CPU in this unit be faulty or am I not installing something I should be? This is a fresh install but I did get the Lenovo Energy Management stuff.. is this the score other people are getting and if not would Lenovo let me exchange it?

    Hey thanks!

I guess I will get a 20994CU model with these specs:
    Intel Core_i7_3610QM Processor 2.3GHz (6MB Cache)
    6 GB DIMM RAM
    750GB 5400rpm Hard Drive
    15.6-Inch Screen, NVIDIA GTX660M 2GB DDR5
    Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

from Amazon or BestBuy because I cannot take any risk with Lenovo and guessing from the comments on delayed shipments I can be a big risk. No one will be there in MV California who can collect if for me after I leave...

    Thanks for the help mate!

    Cheers

Only use the dedicated card (Nvidia GTX 660M) when gaming or doing anything related to video editing, CAD, etc. For everything else (browsing on the web, youtube), use the integrated card because of the following: 1) Longer battery life; 2) Cooler temps.

Hey all. New here and just wanted to share my experience on ordering. I ordered the lenovo y580 model # 20499HU on july 8th. It arrived yesterday on july 18th so it took only 10 days to make purchase and have it shipped. It shipped from shanghai to alaska to louisville ky to here in az.

I opened it up and it looks good. Feels nice and heavy and well built. I purchased a coolermaster x3 cooling fan for it before hand and immediately set it on there. The laptop started right up and after a few introductions and set ups i was running at full speed. It is fast and easy to use. Its my first experience with windows 7 also.

I installed diablo III right away because...why not? i set all settings to max and had it set to run off the gtx card. It runs perfectly. No stuttering, or anything. Smooth as silk. The card puts out some heat though but the coolermaster kept it under control. I was worried it wouldnt but sure enough it worked like a charm. It never got too hot. I played for 3 hours straight. Everything worked just fine. I even installed simcity 4 not knowing if it would be compatible but it worked like a charm! just had to set it to widescreen.

I played with the laptop this morning and it was perfectly fine. After reading some of your experiences i was a little worried, but not anymore. Everything is just great!

My current specs are the i7 ivy bridge, 1 tb 7200 hdd, 32gb ssd, 8 gb ram, win 7, gtx 660 graphics card. Fhd screen 1920 1080p 15.6", and the bluray disc drive. Everything else is pretty much standard i believe.

Do you have any other heavy games you could try? Like Skyrim, for example? Much appreciated!

Unfortunately I do not. Diablo 3 is the newest game I have. My old computer was one I built in 2003, so as you can imagine I havnt been up to date on the latest games. However there are some gameplay videos on youtube showing games like crysis(which from what I understand is graphically intensive) and battle field 3 all on max settings. They seemed to play amazingly on the y580.

The shipping goes pretty quick. Mine shipped on a friday and I got it wednesday. I was like a kid waiting for Christmas to get here. I was checking the tracking every few hours anticipating delays overseas or in customs, but nope. You will love it. I looked at hundreds of reviews for other laptops like dell, and alienware and even the republic of gamers by asus, but settled on this one and was not disapointed.
