    Hello all,
I have got my Y580 and it is running fine.
However I am struggling to play certain games.
The problem is that those games are based on the dxdiag result which can only detect the 4000HD instead of the GTX660, and therefore not allowing me to execute or setting a higher quality, even I have set to run with the nvidia graphics card.
It's there anyway to change the dxdiag result?

Haha yeah we did, wish Best Buy would come to the UK, I'd love a free Xbox for buying a laptop!

As for glossy screens, i'm not so sure... They look nicer, but I'm not so keen on glare and reflections. And if I'm watching TV or a movie in bed and a dark scene comes on, all I can see is my ugly mug, even on full brightness :p

not sure what that means in broad context or if that is related to my question from earlier concerning 3d gaming on external monitor...

are you playing on an external monitor via hdmi ? 2D/3D ? it would be sad to find that the 660mx power could only be used for the built in screen

in case you use an external monitor via hdmi, does it make a difference when you switch off the built in screen ?

I see that it has been brought up on the thread but cannot see a definitive answer to the problem.

Upon booting the Y580, Wi-Fi connects immediately but doesn't allow internet access for about 2 minutes from a fresh boot. Any clues as to what the problem is and how it is solved?

    Thanks!

Hey there, this happened to me starting about 4 days ago or so. In the past whenever I had the problem I almost always traced it back to the antivirus. So I whipped out the plastic and ordered a new antivirus and got rid of that awful McAfee trial they put on the machine, rebooted and *poof!* internet connection from moment of boot.

By the way, it seemed to happen a few days after McAfee started bugging me to buy a new license. So if you aren't a particular fan of McAfee and have days left on the trial, blow it away and install something free to see if it was the problem.

    Cheers.

You paid for antivirus software

    Really?

Microsoft Security Essentials is pretty much all anyone needs for anti virus and anti malware. At least on a new and clean system. Some reviews have said it has a low detection rate. You can add another malware program just to be safe, but I can't remember the last time I read about someone buying antivirus software.

Even if you don't want to use MSE for whatever reason, there are enough free antivirus programs that are excellent and won't bog down your system. Same goes for firewall and other software for cleanup and optimization.

It's like those commercials on tv with people raving about how some stupid website made their computer %150 faster because of some "advanced technology".

PCs get such a bad rap because of viruses and other issues, but the truth is that almost all those kinds of problems are caused because of the users themselves. Opening suspicious email links, going to shady websites, and other activities that will obviously create issues.

I am playing on my 24" monitor right now.
I switch the built-in screen off and run on 1920X1080.
I have tried both vga and hdmi, the vga works perfectly, however the hdmi would sometime blackscreen for a few seconds with no reason.
It happens during both gaming or idling.
I am pretty sure there is nothing wrong with my cable, maybe something wrong with the hdmi driver?

The GTX660 can be used on an ext. monitor.
My problem is that the dxdiag can only detect the 4000HD and some games would limit your graphics based on that result.

Best Buy did come to the UK, (at least to where I live near Bristol), but they literally went out of business just 6 months or something after opening shop. Just goes to show that the technology market is so crap here, compared to the US, as obviously better US style shopping/marketing simply did not work here, also partly due to the higher running costs.

Anyway, feel free to PM me mate, I think we better keep this thread on topic. :p

Very true though if you buy one without an mSATA you will have to scavenge or buy a M2x3mm screw to hold the mSATA card in place as it doesn't come with one (I stole one from my old Vaio HDD cage for my M4 mSATA). I believe the mydigitalssd mSATA cards are the only ones that come with a screw.

I think I've added enough to this thread already ;)

Perhaps buying antivirus software could be argued as a valid option for those who are new to PCs or those who simply don't have knowledge when it comes to these things. Nothing wrong with that. I do remember my cousin paying for norton a year or two ago. Those companies have to make money somehow. Why not lead people to believe that they need to pay an annual subscription to stay protected.

I guess my point was that doing a little research online or even asking here would have given you some insight before you wasted your money.

Unless you are someone who needs to pay for very specific features that a certain product offers, there is absolutely no reason to pay for antivirus software.

Not sure if this is the right place, but I was wondering if the Y480 with the 640M-LE is as good as or equal to the T690 in the y470p?

Y580 owners thread... Definitely the right place

It's the 7690, not T690. Notebook check says that it is slightly better than the 640le.

Is this screw very specialized, or is it something I could find at a hardware store? Maybe some kind of computer repair shop? I'm adding a 256GB mSATA SSD when my Y580 comes in and it would be nice to not have any unfortunate surprises, like a missing screw.

I ran over to Ace and Home Depot real just to do a quick check after I opened it up and realized it didn't have the needed screw inside if you don't have a mSATA factory installed. Couldn't find one at either store so I opened up my old Vaio and 2 of the same size screw are used to hold the HDD cage in its drive bay so I stole one of them. I know you can order them online from ebay, amazon (3rd party vendor) and a place called laptopscrews.com (search M2x3mm screw) and I would have got one there had I not had one available in my old laptop. It is found in plenty of laptop models if you have on old/broken one laying around or if you have a computer repair shop near by you could check there too,you only need 1.

Otherwise like I said I believe mydigitalssd includes one with their mSATA models as they've stated that in one of their forum posts that they'd be including the screw. Their mSATA uses Sandforce though and is alot more expensive than I wanted to spend in any case.

So I had my Y580 for about 3 weeks, and since the beginning I had the slow connection to internet at startup too, taking about 2 or 3 minutes to connect to wired or wireless. I was coping with it and trying to figure it out. I uninstalled and reinstalled the wireless drivers, the atheros driver, cleaned up registry, disabled Mcafee that was on the laptop. The only thing that fixed the problem was to just use the Onekey recovery. After restoring to factory settings, the connection was finally fixed, now it connects immediately. That was what worked for me, don't know if you guys wanna do that since it deletes everything on your harddrive.

I also have the issue with dxdiag only recognizing the Intel HD 4000 and not the gtx 660m. Games like Dawn of war II Chaos Rising rely on that to determine how high of graphics you can set. Now the game forces me to play on medium when I could be playing on ultra. I assumed the Nvidia card only became active when I started playing games, but this makes me wonder if my laptop is ever using the Nvidia gtx 660M at all, which was the main selling point of this laptop for me, personally. I also haven't been using an external monitor so my situation is somewhat different than the other two who mentioned this problem, but I think the source of the problem is the same.

Anybody else wondering about the Nvidia card and know when and how to tell if the card is actually active? Also I think the laptop display itself uses intel HD 4000 so I don't think disabling the intel HD to use solely the nvidia card is a good decision either

It should be active but somehow it couldn't be recognized.
I have checked the bios and the card we can disable only is the GTX660.
I can't even adjust the shared-memory for the graphics card which is a basic option for a computer that has an intel card.
Comparing to other laptops, this laptop's bios is missing a lot of options.
Anyone knows is there a custom bios or bios update?

Look likes I'll be taking the plunge this weekend and ordering the Y580. Will get the 1080p model even though it seems there is no others customization you can really do. Didn't want the 1tb 5400 HD but oh well.

Wheres a good place to get one? Went to the b&n and they have one for $1039. That seems like a good deal but I think somewhere someone posted for getting one below 1k.

Already looking forward to getting the new lappy :)

Hey guys, I have a quick question. I just bought my Y580 a week ago or so, and it's about to come in the mail. It is the 209945U model (so if anybody can comment or whether or not that was a good choice, I'd appreciate it - I don't know anything about rpm and stuff. It's the 500 GB 7200 rpm).

Anyway, I am going to be using this laptop for school and gaming. I like RPG and adventure games like skyrim (Btw - excited for dawnguard :D), but I also play games like warcraft III. What is the best PAID antivirus that uses the least system resources? I'm torn between bitdefender 2013 and webroot, but webroot looks kind of suspicious and kind of unprofessional - if there is one that is better than either of these, feel free to suggest it. On my last computer I was using AVG free and I got a rootkit, so please don't suggest free software as I am willing to pay.

Also, do I need antivirus or do I need internet security suite too? Kind of confused with this and what is the best. I don't want my new Y580 to be super slow because of resource usage.

    Thanks!

ok so to get this clear in my old head, for the models that come with the msata and tradtional hdd, when i get the laptop, i wil use the onekey to make a system recovery/backup disk, then when i change out the msata for a larger one will i need to change cmos to see the msata as "c" drive" not a cahce drive, then recover using the disk i created to make it the system boot drive, then i cahnge the traditional hdd to the new ssd and bios should see it as a "D" dirve ?? im confusing myself as how to change the msata from being a cache drive to being a regular boot dirve.

    thanks again

I recommend that you power it up in the stock config and play with it for a day or two to make sure there aren't any problems before changing anything but that's up to you. Before adding the mSATA I copied the drivers folder off of the D drive to a usb stick. Then installed the mSATA (don't forget the screw i mentioned a page or 2 back) and removed the regular HDD. Powered it back on with the win 7 cd that I burned from the retail iso available from MS (I assume you could use the restore disk you made instead) and let windows do it's install, then reinstalled the HDD. Plenty of post-install tweaking guides available here and google, just search.

thank you very much, exactly what i was looking for. im actually wondering now if i should just order the model without the msata option and just doing a single larger ssd, i doubt i could tell a performance difference than that and a masta and ssd.

That MBR error is occurring because you are booting the Windows disc in UEFI mode. Unified Extensible Firmware Interface - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

When you go into the F12 boot menu you will see the entries like this:

    EFI DVD/CDROM
    SATA HDD
    SATA ODD

Naturally the default action is to hit the first one (I made the same error as you, I have been out of the PC install game for years now and had never heard of UEFI!) which results in you not being able to write or do anything to MBR partitions.

Simply choose the SATA ODD to option to boot from the disc as normal and now you should be able to delete and repartition the drive how you want as well as format and write to it.

Follow your clean install guide after this and proceed as planned. I will add that the Lenovo driver CD is a great way to install the drivers as it lists them in the order they need to be installed (there is a HTML guide to help with this) and this laptop is so new that they are all the latest drivers anyway (I am usually a "download the latest from the web" type of installer and I didn't need to bother this time!)

As for the role of the factory partitions, AFAIK the extra partitions are there to hold drivers and recovery images, which you don't need if you are doing a clean install. The only thing is your OneKey Recovery button will not work with a clean install/the recovery partition removed. Therefore save yourself some time and bloat by not bothering to install the OneKey software once you are up and running as it will do nothing anyway.

You made the right move making recovery discs first though, I did the same, now you can easily set your laptop back to the original partitions with the recovery etc. for resale/warranty returns.

One thing I found strange was the ridiculously tiny amount of space they allocated for the system partition in the first place! Mine was around 25GB, which is just over the minimum required for 64-bit Win 7. My current clean install is already up 46.2GB so that was a glaring oversight on Lenovo's part IMO.

Could someone please tell me whether Ubuntu and project Bumblebee work on the Y580? If Bumblebee does not work can I at least run Ubuntu using the HD 4000? This is a big issue for me since I'm really itching to go out and buy this laptop and I currently have no idea if my favorite OS will work as flawlessly on the laptop as it does on my current PC. I'm really hoping for an informative reply.

There's no performance difference between mSATA and SSD of the same brand/model and both the mSATA and HDD ports are SATA3. The reason you'd install the mSATA is if you wanted to leave the mechanical HDD in the laptop for more storage. Your choice.

Don't know what is the best PAID antivirus. They said Microsoft Security Essentials uses the less system resources, but it's free. However, you can check Fry's website and they have many PAID anivirus for FREE after mir, almost everyweek!

I wrote this on another thread but nobody replied... :(

Even though all my usb ports work properly, I'm having trouble with the safely remove option. Every time I press the icon in the taskbar to remove the device nothing shows up. When I use a pendrive I can always go to windows explorer, right-click on the device and select eject, but that's not an option when I plug my external hard drive. Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance :)

Oh nice! So I know Nvidia is definitely running, except dxdiag still only recognizes intel HD 4000 so that's still a problem... Anyway I learned that Mcafee was the culprit of blocking internet connection at startup. The slow startup happened again after Mcafee update so I just uninstalled it and downloaded avast! free edition.

I do have some random questions. For the intelligent touchpad, what does swiping four fingers to the right do? It brings up my wallpaper and there's a folder at the bottom, I click it and see all my computer files and I don't know what checking or unchecking those files actually do. If you swipe to the right with 4 fingers, it brings up a notepad, which is useful compared to just bringing up the wallpaper. Similarly though, I don't know what the bar on the bottom left when you bring up the notepad actually does. It looks like a T and you can move it from left, to middle, to right.

Lastly, is there a way to keep the touchpad disabled even after shutdown and startup of the laptop without completely uninstalling it? Its just tiring to have to keep pressing Fn+F6 everytime since I always have a usb mouse.

I just learned that the light for capslock is actually one of the front lights. I guess I didn't really pay attention. Either way, I'm thoroughly satisfied with this Y580 since I'm finding out new things about it everyday.

Is there any reason in this day an age to disable "themes" service? I am trying to mac out the performance.

Anyone replace the primary HHD with a SSD? I don't mind having only this 128GB it's all I need. Just need it reliable.

Any benefit for removing the optical driver? More space for the heat to leave? How would you cover the hole where it used to be?

    Thanks guys.

I have seen you have posted the same thing few times in this thread. So i do my best to answer your question to best of my knowledge.

    * You can disable many services if you are not using it, however this laptop has enough power to manage and handle themes and many other apps flawlessly, There are some applications that boost up the performance of your windows for the purposes you desire ( i.e. gaming ) . What they do is simple turning off some features and services.

It comes to the point what do you want to do with the laptop, I guess just gaming. so you are good as long as you don't have junk stuff running.

    * I replaced my HDD with Samsung 830 256GB although I did a fresh windows install ( then drivers and some Lenovo apps ). The difference is very noticeable, Much faster, no noise and less heat. There are many guides on how to replace HDD with SSD and how to do fresh windows install, you can find it in this thread as well.

    * And no benefit, you let dust and small particles enter to the laptop which can cause more damage, The ventilation system is designed to manage dispense the heat properly. If you to assist with cooling process you could use cooling pads or just elevate the latop to be expose to more air.

    Hope this helps

Hi guys I just have a quick question. I was thinking of getting the y580 with the 1tb hdd and 32gb msata ssd. I know the 1tb drives are pretty slow so my question is would the 32gb msata cache drive make the 1tb seem like a 7200 rpm hdd? Thanks!

Just ordered my Y580 and can't wait for it to get here :)

Does anyone know if I can use this laptop in a two screen setup, like two exterior monitors?

there is only one port on the side of the laptop, so you can connect one exterior monitor for a total of two screens, but if youre looking for two exterior monitors for a total of three screens, i dont think thats possible. unless you hook up one screen to vga and one to hdmi?

Well two screens total will be fine, I was just wondering if I could do that so that I could have multiple programs running on both screens.

    Thanks!

Thanks for the reply!!! I hope that SSD replace HDD in the coming years. It really would make these feel less mechanical. Thanks again fro the reply! I didn't think anyone saw my questions as the rate of questions pushed it back pretty fast, thanks again.

    No problem :)
SSD is a great investment as the performance is quite higher than mechanical drive, some would recommended to use msata ssd with normal HDD, which can increase the performance, specially if you install the OS on the mSata and use the HDD for storage. Good thing about this laptop is that it supports sata 3 for mSata (As well as for main drive) .

I recommend when you get SSD or msata SSD, search on the net for tips and tricks to help you have the best setup and performance.

And try not to install any junkie app on your machine, even though you may uninstall them but their foot print remains in registry and over the time reduces the performance.

With respect to SSD tools, I think Samsung's SSD Magician software that comes with there SSDs is quite nice, as it comes with benchmarking tools, Win OS optimization (turning off unnecessary services), firmware upgrade path, etc. To put it succinctly, it is probably for the best that the OP installs the OEM software that comes with the SSD.

Totally agree with you. That software is great and allows easy management of the SSD. haven't used the optimization tool but will give it a try soon.

By junk apps I meant the ones that are written by poor developing companies or create risk to the system and OS.

Proven, tested and appraised applications to maintain and manage a well performed computer is something to always consider.

Sorry for asking this again, but could someone please tell me whether Ubuntu and Bumblebee work on the Y580? It would be great to know.

Just pulled the trigger on a Y580, 1TB + 32GB SSD version. Looking forward to playing with some next gen tech. Also went ahead and got another Samsung 830, ODD Caddy, and Notepal U3. Thanks to those of you who posted some great info in this thread. It really helped me in my decision.

    Hi nocklam;

First let me state that I'm no expert. And maybe someone may give you a better advice. Anyways, here's my opinion.

I think the answer is... depend. What are you looking for? What's your budget?

    Same stuff:
    CPU
RAM ( BOTH can be upgrade to 16GB as long a you have W7 HP x64 or better)
    Blue-ray
    Keyboard (numeric pad & blacklit)
    Monitor size and resolution
(I think) the wireless connection and bluetooth

    Different stuff:

HDD - (doesn't matter 'cause you can upgrade that) but as is HP wins
GPU - you can't upgrade that, therefore Lenovo wins (from what I've read is by a small margin)
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M - Notebookcheck.net Tech
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M - Notebookcheck.net Tech
Mousepad... I've read many complains on the Lenovo Trackpad... I personally love it... for me is like the MacBook Pro. Don't know if HP has multi touch functions.
Sound - Lenovo sound is good, but I think HP wins, plus it has subwoofer.

    ____________________________
Again, which one is better for you depends on what you're going to do with it. If is gaming mainly, then probably Lenovo is a better choice. If money is not a limiting factor... you may check Sager NP9130 or NP9150... I've never had one, but apparently the're awesome laptops.

Now, if you go with Lenovo and buy it from their website... you may have to wait up to a month to receive the laptop... I personally had to wait 28 days (6/13 - 7/11). Other had a better luck.

Other thing you may want to consider is the weight of the laptop, if you will be moving around frequently. Apparently the Lenovo is kind of hefty compared to other computers of the same size. My previous laptop was an 17in HP so I got used to that weight... That was a pain... for me the Lenovo is just fine.

    Hope this helps :)
