In my opinion, HP's are generally not very good computers. They have one of the highest malfunction ratings of name brand laptops. Also, most HP laptops have a similar problem, their fan systems tend to fail, causing overheating. If you look up reviews for HP laptops, you'll see that excessive overheating and fan malfunctions are strangely common problem for HP's. While overheating is a common problem for nearly all laptops, overheating and poor fans are more significant in HP's.

I had an HP for 4 years and my problem was not the fan, but just the system hardware and firmware. Over the 4 years, I had to restore it to factory settings and send it in for repairs over 4 times and I hardly even used it since I had a desktop. My brother had a Toshiba for 5 years and not once did he ever have to restore it or have a part replaced.

For gaming, I would definitely suggest the Y580 over the HP, but then I'd suggest a lot of other laptops over HP's as well. The downside to the Lenovo would be because the GTX 660M does not have real drivers yet. If you went to the NVIDIA website, you would not be able to find a specific driver for it, except for the beta. But you can just rely on Lenovo drivers of course.

Hey guys; anyone know what determines shipping from greensboro or china?

I just ordered a y580 20994hu and it is shipping from greensboro NC where as I have read that everyone else seems to be getting theirs shipped from china.

Additionally I noticed at least 2 other people who have received their laptops from greensboro and they seems to be faulty upon arrival. Also the repair center seems to be there also.

Am I thinking to much inot tihs that the units shipping from greensboro may be returned units that are reverified to "be working" and shipped out as new?

Anyone with any thoughts or experience w/ this?

    Thx

To add something to that. The reason I have my Y580 is because my HP died. I bought my HP Pavilion DV9000 in August 2007... and close to a year old I had to sent it back because of the GPU. Luckily they fixed it for free. That line of HP had a problem that the GPU separates from the board due to overheat. And this May 2012, it happened again. In the mean time I took my mom's HP Pavilion DV9000 (which it wasn't working)... and I swapped my two HDD and RAM into my mom's laptops and got it to work, but after a couple of days... BANG! it stopped working... so now I have two broken HP... I dont know what's the problem of the 2nd one though.

This is my first Lenovo so I don't know the longevity of this brand... I hope is good. My wife bought a Sony VAIO like a year before than my HP and it still alive.

To be fair, HP's business-line laptops are pretty damn good. Mine is over 5 years old and still works, although there are vertical lines along the screen that developed 4.75 years into the laptop. Mind you, I simply threw this laptop into my backpack without a laptop sleeve. I could've popped the bezel open and see whether the connectors were loose, but I've been in the market for a replacement for the past year. The only thing I replaced (other than upgrading the memory) was its fan when the oil started to dry up in year 4.

Now, I have to agree with you that HP's consumer line has issues, including their Envy's. I had their ivy bridge dv6 for over a month and encountered build quality, audio performance and thermal issues. Thankfully, I haven't experienced any of the same issues with my Y580 so far. This is my first Lenovo and I'm loving it!

for those of you that have changed out the Hdd for a SAMSUNG 830 Series MZ-7PC256N/AM 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) Notebook Upgrade Kit, did you need the upgrade kit for the misc hardware or did the bare drive work ??

    Also im looking at Kingston HyperX 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 HyperX Plug n Play Laptop Memory Model KHX1600C9S3P1K2/8G
is there really that much difference in performance ram over OEM,

    thanks in advance

The bare drive works just fine, you don't need the spacer. The only reason to get the laptop kit is if you want the SATA-USB transfer cable and software.

I can personnaly attest to HPs heating problems. My computer recently broke so I borrowed my dads HP envy13. I was watching an episode of oz with the HP on my stomach and if ell asleep because it was on my stomach the heat couldn't escape and when I woke part of stomach was red 3 weeks later I have a scar from that. In addition it was exspensive, the trackpad sucks, and there are many scratches from the crappy metal. So personally I would go with Lenovo :)

For those asking a couple of pages ago what is the best paid for antivirus, it's widely considered that Eset Nod32 is superior to most. I've used it and agree, however, I'm pretty happy with Avast (free).

ok sorry another quick question, and im searching and reading as i go,

for those of you that have done ram upgrades, what voltage did you use

everything im looking ok, corsair, g.skill, crucial, are showing to be 1.5volt
i think and correct me if needed, the oem ram is 1.35 volt,

    am i over-thinking this ??

Last Sunday went to Costco and found a HP envy 13, and played with it a little bit. The key board definitely felt quite warm for an idle notebook.

If you look at all the stats the 1.35v ones are 11-11-11-28 and the 1.5v is 10-10-10-27, conceivably you should use very slightly less battery power and generate very slightly less heat with 1.35v dram over 1.5v, not a big difference just noting it. In my Y580 I had 2x4gb 1.5v Hitachi PC3-12800 SoDIMMs (some Y580 utility screenshots have shown 1.35v SoDIMMs, it appears to be random) and I jumped on the 2x8gb G.Skill 1.5v PC3-12800 deal from Newegg for $79 on Saturday so I will be replacing the stock 8gb with those G.Skills tomorrow.

TLDR: You can use either voltage, the differences are negligible and the chipset supports both voltages. Buy whatever kit you find the best deal on as long as it's DDR3 1600 PC3-12800 SoDIMM.

thanks again bobo, if you dont mind me asking and not trying to start a ram debate, why did you choose to go with the 16g over the 8, i have been debating this as well, from everything i can read unless you doing alot of video work the 2nd 8 dont add alot.. again im just curious, dont want to start a flame war or anything

    Thanks

I run VMWare with a few virtual machines running plus Im remoted in to a bunch of other servers at the same time while running dev tools (and gaming... lol). 8gb is probably just fine if youre playing games and/or even using it heavily for school/work but if you run PShop, virtual machines, SQL/IIS instances or other memory intensive programs you really can't ever have too much memory available.

If you don't need to upgrade the quantity there is absolutely no reason to change out the stock ram sticks for "higher performance" sticks. Laptop sticks (of the same class, all PC3-12800 class compared together, etc.) in the real world (ie. not static benchmarking) all perform basically the same to the naked eye.

Hello fellow Y580 owners! I just ordered this laptop and it's on the way. I got this version:
    IdeaPad Y580 15.6" Laptop | Shop | Lenovo | (US)

I just have a couple questions regarding getting a (mSata) SSD:

1.) Is it possible to wipe the HDD (which will have the OS on it when it arrives) and reinstall the OS on an mSSD?

2.) I talked to a Lenovo rep and that person said the laptop only supports 32GB mSata SSD's. Is this true? Is 32GB enough for the OS?

3.) I was looking at getting this SSD. It's a Crucial M4 (so it must be good!):
Newegg.com - Crucial M4 CT032M4SSD3 mSATA 32GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
However I can't find any reviews for it anywhere. Is this ok? Does it matter if it is Sata II or III?

Thanks for the help guys, so excited to get my Lenovo!!

that is a little better price on that unit than newegg, one thing to consider is if you are going for a extended warrenty then the lenovo site has better pricing than any i have seen online, some folks have had long waits though ordering online from lenovo, Lenovo sales have stated that a non issue now, cant confirm that though, im puling the trigger today and ordering basically the same setup but the 209945u today, same machine only with a 500gig hd, but im changing out to a ssd right off the bat, lenovo web price is 999.00 for the 209945u right now

    Good Luck

    Hi everybody!

I'm having some problems with the battery management. I'm using Lenovo battery system in which it will charge the battery up to 60% to extend the life of the battery. But this is the second time in which the laptop shuts down because it reached the minimum levels. When I plug the power cord and turn on the laptop right away, the battery icon in the taskbar shows that I have more than 50% remaining... WHICH MAKES NO SENSE!!! Anyway, I decided to check the Lenovo battery system and this is what I found:

    battery.jpg

And the icon in the taskbar as you can see it doesn't say "charging". However, while I'm writing this, the battery percent is charging in the Lenovo software, but in the taskbar it remains at 56%.
Can anyone help me on this?

    Thanks in advance :)

    Edit:

I have another request unrelated to the battery problem.

Does anyone know a good game (can be a demo) I can download legally which is NOT an MMO so I can test my nVidia?

Additional note: since youre going to add an mSATA drive anyway, I'd advise getting the 209945U model as it's the least expensive of the high end models (1080p screen + blu-ray) and comes with a 7200rpm 500gb drive that you can convert to a data drive, unless you'd rather get the 1TB 5400rpm version (speed vs storage capacity).

If you go to the Steam store, they have 100 free demos you can download. Batman: Arkham City and Spec Ops: The Line would probably be a pretty good test.

If you're concerned only about framerates, there's a pretty good list of games and their performance here.

That's what I purchased!! It's arriving today :D Thank you for the help. Right now it's a choice between these two mSata's.

Newegg.com - Mushkin Enhanced Atlas Series MKNSSDAT60GB-DX mSATA 60GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Newegg.com - Crucial M4 CT032M4SSD3 mSATA 32GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Since I'm using solely as a boot drive, the 32gb should be enough right? I want to get that because it is cheaper.

Do you _need_ the extra space the HDD provides?

The 7200RPM hard drive runs a bit hotter then I would like in my y580s. I think the best bet would be to pull the HDD and replace with a 128/258GB or larger SSD and skip the msata for now until prices drop and/or you need additional space.

This also has a small performance benefit since the larger the SSD the better the drive perfoms.

Hi everyone, I bought mine from Lenovo's website and after a long wait, it is finally here. I installed an SSD and have been following a guide I found on here based on the Y570 driver installations but I am pulling my hair out. The driver for Intel onboard graphics device that can be found on Lenovo's website is not working, and Intel's driver update utility is stuck at "Analyzing computer...". Can anyone give me a few pointers here? I am on the verge of a nervous breakdown after having to put up with endless delays on Lenovo's part and now this!

    Hello Everyone,

I received my Y580 today morning. The first thing I noticed was that the Laptop Box Seal was broken...do I need to worry about this laptop being a replacement laptop shipped to me? Has someone here experienced such a thing?

Secondly, let me know all the major things which I should check...if anything has an issue ill simply send it back.
Lastly, how can I manually switch graphics while in windows. Just to make sure that the GTX660 work without any problems.

    Any other tips?

Im still in my office and wont be back home for a few hours...haven't opened the box...its just lying in my room. Im a bit curious over what awaits me.

Runnng a mSATA as the main drive, Im not hammering the 2nd drive continuously enough to worry about it not that Id be worried about it in any case as I think the HDD temp issue (and system temps in general) has been blown completely out of proportion here.

As for mSATA size, I wouldn't settle for 32gb, the minimum you need for Win 7 HP 64 is 20gb and I see most OS only partitions hit 30 pretty easy with updates, drivers etc. Get the largest you can afford IMO, you'll never complain about too much space. Not only that but SSDs (mSATA included) run much faster <50% full than they do at >70% full.

When I received my unit from Lenovo, the laptop box seal was intact. If you ordered through Lenovo, I believe the unit goes through customs, so perhaps they needed to inspect your box for whatever reason? Just a guess, but letting you know from my experience that I believe it should come sealed. Whether or not you need to worry if you got a used unit is another story...

As far as issues that you should check - I usually check for any physical defects such as bezel adherence on the display, bent usb ports, etc. I haven't read any major probelms from owners apart from the temperatures during intensive use of the GPU and CPU. You may also want to check for dead or stuck pixels and validate that your backlit keyboard works properly. My last Y580 had a few dead pixels.

A few owners have also reported problems with slow connection times to the internet after booting up their machine (myself included). Some people have said that uninstalling McAfee or restoring the OS fixed this, but I haven't had a chance to try that out yet since I needed to return mine due to the dead pixels and the fact that it couldn't connect wirelessly since Lenovo forgot to install a wireless card in it.

To manually switch graphics, I believe you can right click and it's under the "Graphics Properties" where you can select which apps run on the dedicated GPU. I can't remember it off the top of my head not having the laptop in front of me. Hope this helps.

That space might be a little too small for my needs. Besides video editing I'll be doing a lot of gaming, so I'm guessing the hdd will be getting pretty hot, no? Is the hdd's heat really gonna be a problem for gaming/schoolwork? I heard the hdd's on these laptops do get very hot... but unfortunately I need the space. I'm most likely getting the Notepal U3 so hopefully that will help.

So then out of these two what would you recommend?

Newegg.com - Mushkin Enhanced Atlas Series MKNSSDAT60GB-DX mSATA 60GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
Newegg.com - Crucial M4 CT032M4SSD3 mSATA 32GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Maybe I should go with the bigger one.. but is SandForce still less reliable than Marvel?

    Hey guys,

Using OneKey Theatre, is it better to play games like skyrim in normal mode or movie mode? I'm kind of confused as to the difference.

    Thanks!

Besides that unanswered question :( I wanted to ask a few more. I'm from Latin America and this model is nowhere to be seen. I'm thinking on importing it with a friend and wanted to know which are the main aspects that my friend must focus (like looking for dead/stuck pixels, keyboard flex, etc) before sending it to me. It would be such a pain if I discover something here. Please if you could make a list or something that I should take in consideration before importing. Thanks a lot! :)

As I said... as for mSATA size, I wouldn't settle for 32gb, the minimum you need for Win 7 HP 64 is 20gb and I see most OS only partitions hit 30 pretty easy with updates, drivers etc. Get the largest you can afford IMO, you'll never complain about too much space. Not only that but SSDs (mSATA included) run much faster <50% full than they do at >70% full.

I personally won't buy any SSD with Sandforce but that's up to you. If you want a 64GB (I have the 256gb one in mine... get the 128gb if you can afford it) get the M4 direct from Crucial Memory upgrades from Crucial.com - Search Categories and here's a hint, if you google search Crucial 5% coupon retailmenot has a click through link for 5% off at crucial.com which basically covers tax if you live in a state that crucial has a presence in ( Memory upgrades from Crucial.com - Sales Tax States) and crucial ships free.

Overall the sandforce controllers are reported to be better then they used to be, yeah. I agree with bobo that 32Gb isn't enough.

Be aware that though that model has the blue-ray burner it doesn't have a full 1920x1080 screen. (which may be why you chose it)

There are some reports here of performance
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/ideapad-essential/679039-guild-wars-2-y580.html

Although arenanet has said that the game isn't fully optimized and 'is CPU bound' so that, and different nvidia drivers could change things significantly.

I looked this up but was a bit lost in what I was reading was out of date.
I have the video driver 295.93.
Vert Sync is on because it's the stock settings. Comp set to high performance and I removed the Lenovo Energy program.
What do you guys do for games like BF3? Did you update the driver?

I tried to update the driver but it says there are no update available when i go to check for updates in the system tray.

How about checking the following things:
    • Check for physical problems scratches/cracks/loose bezel/keyboard problems/etc
    • Boot up, check battery, check power supply/charging of battery
    • Check to make sure you got what you ordered (8GB ram, 1080p screen, wifi card, heh)
    • Check LCD for stuck/dead pixels
    • Check to make sure speakers work/don't buzz/etc
    • Install CPUID HWmonitor or equivalent
    • Check for abnormal idle temps. approximate temps I have in a 22c room (before reinstalling windows):
      CPU - 45c
      GPU - 38c
      HDD - 47c (500mb 7200rpm)
      [/INDENT]
    • Load a game, test performance and temps of the 660m/cpu/hdd
    • Then test whatever else you may be worth sending the laptop back over (bluetooth/wireless nic/burning a dvd/playing a blue-ra/test each individual usb port/etc)

It's not out of the realm of possibility but I would think it unlikely.

I ordered two y580s for my family on August 2nd. They were shipped from Greensboro and I received them August 7th. I've given them both a thorough physical investigation and found no evidence they were anything other then new.

Although of course if they were shipping returns as new they would be extra careful about cleaning all the greasy fingerprints and what not....wouldn't they? muwahaha. :p

Either way good luck to you and let us know how your machine turns out!

    Hi moriara,

Did you get the white Lenovo drivers disc in your packaging?

They are the drivers I used for a clean install and everything works fine. AFAIK I could tell after comparing them there aren't any more recent drivers available on the website, one of the advantages of having a very new laptop I guess, so you will not be missing any functionality by installing the disc versions. At least they are guaranteed to work!

They are handily organised in numbered folders in the correct install order as well along with a useful HTML file that provides details and direct links to said folders. I simply used that HTML page to complete my install in the correct order.

Then as new drivers are released you can update as required. The Lenovo site has a handy RSS feed which you can follow to get the latest releases as they happen to help with keeping up!

    Hi AnimalMother;

You have to check the box for beta drivers in the preferences tab.
