After swapping to a new SSD and installing windows 7 (I assume that's the OS installed), win 7 should automatically download the latest intel drivers via windows update.

By the way, you need to install the intel drivers first before moving on to the nvidia drivers.

I don't think it's included in all orders (at least not on mine).

Could you share the installation order and the HTML help file here?

@foolie: I bought Y580 to play GW2 and I have played through BWE3 and the last stress test. During BWE3, the game was pretty smooth even on max settings (didn't really check FPS, but I think it's 40-50 in pve zones, didn't do WvWvW). There was an FPS dip to about 35 during stress test (to be expected). I think if you have reasonable expectations about the 660m card (unreasonable being maxing all settings and still expect 60 FPS), then it should be more than sufficient.

So I'm going to be purchasing a Y580 (2099442U) next week for college, and I plan to use it for CAD and gaming (I think Skyrim will be the most GPU intensive game I've got). From what I've been reading, the HDD placement isn't the greatest in terms of heat. Is it enough of an issue that I need to do more than just keep the bottom of the notebook well ventilated, or should I invest in a cooler like the Notepal U2/3? Furthermore, would it be practical to get an external enclosure for the ODD and move the HDD to that slot as an alternative to the cooler?

How's it going all, getting my Y580 from the UPS store in a bit, also shipped from Greensboro and got here to California in 3 days. I'll let you guys know if I think it is a return or the seal is broken, but I just don't see Lenovo selling returns as new.

The one thing I wanted to ask was, how are you guys customizing the exterior? The Y580 is pretty plain on its own and was looking to get some sort of cover for the back. Any suggestions on where to get one?

Also, is there anyway to customize the base of the keyboard as well. I'll be getting a sleeve so I can put it in my backpack but figured the case would further help protect it while also getting rid of those pesky fingerprints the Y580 seems to attract oh so easy.

    Thanks!

Is the heat in the hdd that bad an issue? I'm looking for a laptop that can last me 3 years at least, and Y580 caught my eye (along with MSI GE60 and Gigabyte U2442).

Also: how easy or hard is it to move the recovery partition from the HDD to a SSD if I installed one in the mSATA slot?

Hello all. Recently received my Y580 and I am very happy with it. So far I have only encountered two problems with it. The first is my webcam. It looks slightly dented and the picture doesn't seem to adjust to me like webcams should. I'm not sure if the webcam is just not great, or if this is a problem with my laptop, here's a pic:
    View attachment 81661

The second is my HDD temps. I got the model with the 500gb 7200 RPM HDD, and it gets hot. I made a thread there discussing it better in detail here (Is my Y580's HDD running dangerously hot?) but I wanted to ask the owners thread as well. Would my read/write speeds on my HDD be slower since the ODD drive bay is SATA II? Also, would it help with heat better if I got a 64gb mSATA ssd instead of installing a 2.5" drive into the hdd bay? Can I expect temps to be significantly lower in the normal range? Uses are for gaming for long hours, so I want to make sure my temps aren't damaging my HDD.

    Hi everyone,
i got my Ideapd Y580 209945U yesterday which indicated(on the box) that it was built on 8/2. So I think its up to date and must hold high performance. But when I tried to play any online RPG games ( dragonnest, crossfire) the screen got stuck and sometimes the graphics hardware even crashed and then showed bluescreen with tons of technical words.

Is there something wrong with the NVIDIA GTX660M?
I didnt change any settings in the NVIDIA control Panel and I've tried many drivers, including the two beta versions from NVIDIA official website.(304.48&304.79)
Now ive made the driver back to origin.(295.93)
Im not sure if anybody had or would have the same wierd problem but Im really frustrated and worried.

Can anybody help me? Im thinking it should be a problem w/ the either the graphic hardware itself or the driver's version? Or the games are not compatibale with GTX660M? Cuz I can play them with Intel 4000 display without any problems.

Some details following :(report after blue-screen restart)

Once again, I think many are worrying too much about the hard drive. Just be smart with you laptop aka don't block the vents, put in on your bed, bring you laptop outside on a very hot day etc... The y580 has a pretty decent cooling system. Just buy a laptop cooler or have a desktop fan pointed at your laptop when playing game. For the average consumer, it shouldn't pose a problem... It a great computer. Sort of tired from all these heat issue from the hardrive, there are like 5-6 threads about them and solution to them...

I got this laptop for college and skyrim as well, and all I can say is.. zero regrets. It's beautiful and runs like I expected. On skyrim:
    low- 60fps ALWAYS
    medium- 50-60 fps
    high- 40-50 fps
ultra 1920x1080- hovers around 30fps, playable but sometimes at graphics intensive moments whether it be outside or during an intense fight it stutters.

You will not regret this purchase. As for heat, yeah it gets hot, and the power brick can melt steel and heat up pizzas, take it as you will. While internet browsing or just low performance stuff this thing blows out cold air haha. While gaming MAKE SURE THE LAPTOP IS PLUGGED IN, otherwise your fps will be like 9 on low. Yeah. I tried configuring this thing to turn off all power saving settings but all I got was 30 fps low, vs the always 60fps on low whilst plugged in. Any help with disabling ALL power saving features? I tried turning on high performance vs. lenovo dynamic graphics, didn't notice much of a difference.

This is not good advice, in my opinion.

I am starting to bench and test a couple of y580s. One is, on average, several degrees hotter then the other. Both have Seagate Momentus 500Gb 7200rpm drives.

After playing skyrim for 10 minutes (on the slightly hotter y580) I am seeing:
Skyrim - ultra cpu max 77c
Skyrim - ultra gpu max 72c
Skyrim - ultra hdd max 62c
In a 21c (air conditioned) room.

That is WAY too hot to ignore. I think the advice we should be giving people is:

When you get your computer, if you are not planning on swapping the HDD to the optical bay, or swapping the HDD out for a SSD/msata you should carefully monitor your HDD temps.

Do this by downloading CPUID HWmonitor and playing your favorite game/kick off some video encoding/do whatever it is you are most worried about heating up the hard drive.

Next look up the operating temps of the hard drive you have (the seagate I mentioned is 0-60c) and if you are anywhere near the top end of that you should
    1) Plan on swapping out the HDD for a SSD/msata sooner rather then later (and keep good backups in the meantime)
    2) Re-paste the CPU/GPU as another poster mention it helped the entire machine stay cooler
    3) Send the machine back and to try your luck with another y580 or get a different make/model.
    or
    4) Keep stuff you don't want to lose backed up and hope your hard drive drives right before you warranty expires rather then after.

Wow 72C gpu temp during gaming? It stays there for several minutes with me, but then it climbs to around 84C where it stays as its max temp. Did you apply new thermal paste? Hmm I have some leftover thermal paste from my Hyper 212 EVO, but it's been sitting for a while so I'm not sure if it's good anymore or if reapplying a cpu cooler thermal paste will help with temps.

I agree with you. These temps are indeed to hot to ignore. I am considering putting the HDD in the ODD be, but would my HDD end up being slower because the ODD bay is only SATA II? Also if I install my ODD into a USB 3.0 enclosure would the optical drive end up being slower as well?

Instead of installing a SSD in the HDD bay, I am getting a mSata. So the empty space should hopefully improve airflow a bit. Also, I am getting a Notepal U3 so that should help temps when gaming, but idk if the difference will be significant.

What would you consider a normal range for this HDD while gaming? I'd imagine somewhere in the 40C's.

I apologize for all the questions! Thank you for your help.

I plan to but haven't yet. I wanted to get temps/performance using Lenovo's base build first so I haven't made any changes except I removed McAfee. (eww)

I don't believe it would be something you could notice, although putting a SATA III (6Gb/s) SSD into the SATA II (3Gb/s) wouldn't be advised.

I wonder if any y580 owners who had the ODD jump could post some crystaldiskmarks...

That would be ideal to me, but I already bought SSDs :(

    Well let us know!

Above 40 and I personally start keeping an eye on it (paranoid a bit am I) It it's hitting 50 I (personally) would make efforts to cool it or swap it with solid state.

I don't think it is necessary, as the 1TB Seagate that was included my Y580 was rated SATA II according to HWinFO64 when it sat in the main HDD bay. It is SATA II also when it sits in the ODD bay. Now it would be interesting if the ODD bay interface is SATA III. I haven't seen anything to suggest that it is (may have missed it though).

Has anyone noticed that the Y580 is no longer sold by BestBuy? They only had it in stock for a day or two at the most. Why would they remove it? Is it because they were backordered/sold out all the time or is there another reason?

while gaming for long periods of time, my cpu reaches about 75-80, gpu reaches about 71-72 (even with a +135 overclock), and hard drive reaches 59-61.
how is your gpu reaching 84? thats definitely not right, even my cpu barely reaches that when at 100% load with a stress tester. is there proper ventilation for your laptop?

Just thought I would add my 2c,

    During gaming:
    1) CPU Temp 70-80C
    2) GPU Temp 65-70C
    3) HDD Temp 52-56C

Using a cheap chinese notebook cooler bought off ebay. Nothing is overclocked.

My Y580 is a "DOS" version machine, meaning there was no copy of Windows supplied, that could be why a driver disc is included perhaps. It was purchased in the Asian region and there is a Chinese version of the HTML file on there as well.

    This is the disc itself.

    Lenovo_Disc.jpg

    The HTML contains the following:

Finally, the directory structure on the disc under \Win7 is like this:

There's also the possiblity of inaccurate temp readings.

On my laptop, when running at the bios max overclock, I get up to 85C sometimes (1085 MHz core, 100% gpu load). This is the number shown on the on-screen display from afterburner.

If I check the temp from GPU-z, it's more than 10 degrees cooler than that, usually around 70-74.

Coretemp also reports much higher temps on my i7 than speedfan.

Hard to tell which numbers are correct, we have no idea how accurate any of these sensors aer, especially on new hardware that is barely supported by these software.

Have you guys tried putting a midget under your laptop? I get lower temps when place my laptop on my midget.

My laptop runs pretty hot too, i have the slim under it but it doesn't seem to make that much of a difference as did my u3.

Ii've been thinking of dumping the HDD and putting a samsung 128gb ssd as my primary drive and just migrating a copY to it. SSD sill help with temps right? There are so many solutions i am lost on the best one. Thats when i grabbed a midget .

I haven't tried gaming yet but I can already tell the difference in temp readings. For my CPU at idle, HWMonitor shows low-mid 50's across all cores while SpeedFan shows high 30's.

For gpu temps after playing 30 minutes of Skyrim, MSI Afterburner and GPU-Z both show 83-84C, while HWMonitor shows 63C after quickly alt tabbing out of the game. If you guys are checking your gpu temps with HWMonitor, it seems wrong to me. My previous laptop got the same temps as shown on Afterburner/GPU-Z. 63C seems to low for me for a mobile GPU at max load.

Quick question about clean windows 7 install.

When I get to the part where it asks where to install windows, I keep getting the message "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition."

Anyone else get this? And how would I go about fixing this problem.

Ok, so i just received my computer and everything is perfect, except for a small problem, whenever i boot up my computer. The 'computer' program would open up by itself. Is there anything i could do to fix this? thanks

I just got mine earlier today. I think I already have a problem. I start it up and it says:

"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

    1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
    2. Choose your language settings, and then click "next."
    3. Click "Repair your computer."

Do I actually have to buy a copy of Windows 7 and install it? I've seen a few videos of people booting their Y580's for the first time and this never happened to them.

    Yeah that isn't normal.

Did you boot up and do anything (like install Windows updates) or was that your first boot?

Try the "One key recovery" button next to your power button. I believe you need to turn of your computer, then press that key. It should boot into the recovery menu and you can select to restore the windows to factory default or try other options

    Hi bvan;

Are talking about the Windows Explorer? Did you install any program recently?

That happened to me right after I installed some Adobe software... At first I had to set back the laptop to factory conditions because I didn't know what was causing it. Then I started to install a software and restart the computer for everyone until I found out which program was causing this. Is weird because I used to have other computers with Windows 7 and that Adobe program and never had this problem. I did a google search and tried many of the suggestions I found and non of them worked for me.

Did you restart your laptop in safe mode? When I do this the folder doesn't open. Some of the simple suggestions are:
    1. make sure you don't have any "windows explorer" thing in the startup folder

    2. go to windows explorer > select folder options >view tab, make sure that the "restore previous folder windows at logon" is not checked

    3. you can go to run and type msconfig and start disabling the startup services one by one (or two by two, or three by three, you get the idea) and restart the computer until it doesn't open the windows explorer, then you know which service is causing this.

I never did that cause is a pain in the butt.

    4. edit the registry follow this link: windows explorer opens at start-up - Piriform Community Forums

Again none of those worked for me... I installed PC Doctor and what it does is turn off some of the services at startup to improve boot performance. And that's how I got rid of it. Now, I don't know if McAfee has anything to do with it. McAfee is known to delay the internet connection, so who knows if it messes with that as well. Good luck with that.

Let me know if you solve your problem. :)

This is in fact a 1080 display since a coworker of mine purchased the same model on Amazon.however, it comes with 2x USB 2.0 and 2x USB 3.0 Ports as oppose to 1x USB 2.0 and 3x USB 3.0 if you were to order this model directly from Lenovo if it matters to you at all.
