Quick question, I just did the clean windows install on my 32gb SSd and my computer doesn't see the 1Tb hd. After installing lenovo drivers will it recognize my other hd?

Hey man, thanks for your quick reply, that brings more confidence into my decision. I guess I will survive with the 2xUSB 3.0 ports since Lenovo's shipping process takes really long and my friend will only stay for one week. Thanks again! :D

Hi guys, Sorry for the noob questions , when you made your recovery discs, did you use the OneKey Recovery software or just the Windows OS (Control panel)? As soon as I get my Y580 do you recommend to do a fresh install even though I won't use a SSD or mSSD, just the stock HDD (mine will be 1tb without ssd)?
And, all the necessary drivers are on the recovery partition? or do I need to download something extra? (besides newer versions of the existing ones).
What I'm planning to do is: Download Windows iso from here: http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/win/X17-58997.iso
Burn it, save the drivers folder to external storage. Use the burned DVD with the key that came with the laptop and after first boot install all the drivers in the order that was described a few pages before. Is it fine? Thanks for the answers, I'm having a lot of doubts since this will be my first laptop in a long time. :)

Is the msata port on this sata 3 speed? And how serious is the hard drive temperature issue?

The 32Gb drive is a cache drive. It is used for caching frequently used programs, so you laptop responds faster to frequent tasks.
You should install the OS on the harddrive and use intel drivers to create a cache disk out of you SSD.

So, did you tried boot in safe mode?

When does that start happening? Did you install a software recently?

Here's the link of the software I use:
Kingsoft PC Doctor - CNET Download.com

    Let me know if that helps;

I did both... I don't know why but with the Windows was only 1 DVD, which for me was weird, so I decided to go with the OneKey Recovery, which asked for 4 DVD then there was only 3. That one makes more sense for me, so go with the OneKey.

Many people will suggest you do a clean install. I haven't. I guess that if you don't want all that bloatware then you will want a clean install.

Yes, all the drivers are in the recovery partition (D: LENOVO), with the exception of the Lenovo Enhanced Experience 3. Someone put a link to it around here. But if you want, you can copy that folder in a thumb stick, pen drive or what ever external memory you have and erase that partition. However if you do this, the OneKey Recovery function won't work.

The link automatically downloads the file, so I don't know which version of W7 you're downloading. But I guess your laptop came with W7 Home Premium x64, so that's the iso file you should download if you want to use your product key.

Someone made a step by step from the Y570 with a few tweaks for the Y580, I suggest you follow that procedure. Here's the link

Hi, thanks for answering. If I erase that recovery partition and the OneKey Recovery function won't work then the recovery discs that I made using that software would be useless? Because I was planning to erase all the partitions and made a fresh install or it is not recommended to erase that partition.

Yep, I've already double checked and it's Home Premium x64. Thanks for the step by step guide and thanks for taking the time to answer!

Yes, the discs will work. What you will lose is the OneKey Recovery Button functionality, which is next to the Power Button.

While Enhanced Experience 3 being discussed, does anyone know if it provides any benefit when using SSD as the main drive?
I see it mentions about disk de-fragment which is not suitable for SSDs, so thought to ask before installing it.
    Thanks

I've read from other users in this thread that using Kingsoft PC Doctor ( here) is a better option to speed up boot times. Dunno if it's true but I think is worth trying.

Alright there is something seriously wrong. I know that laptop batteries cannot support gaming, but mind does weird stuff. Anybody try any 3d game: skyrim, tribes ascend, diablo, whatever. Pop it in and load up fraps. Does it hover at 20fps then drop to 5 fps then back every few seconds? Mine goes through this cycle many times nonstop, whilst when plugged in to an outlet it is a steady 60fps.

Also, how do my temps look, is this too hot?

How do you get 60fps? I've been playing SW:TOR (not a graphically demanding game) and the only time I seem to break 60 is when im inside a building. Outside I get between 30-40fps. That seems kind of low to me.

I'm also getting a temperature in the 70's but I'm not using a cooling fan so maybe that's normal.

WHY would you even TRY to game on battery?

Don't you realize that you are seriously shortening its lifespan by doing that? Simply put, your battery cannot provide not even close to the required 100W + to run the thirsty GPU.

One thing you can do is uninstall one by one those programs and see when the folder won't open any more. Again in my case was some Adobe product. I had CCleaner and iTunes and none of those gave me any problems. You don't have to install Kingsoft PC Doctor. I'm just saying that's the software that worked for me to get rid of the problem. And also, I think Kingsoft PC Doctor works better than EE3 for the boot time. So if you install it you may want to disable EE3.

    Hi soulkyo;

Although I haven't buy any yet, I was considering those two plus the U3 and the x-slim. What I did is go to the webpage and compared them side by side. I want mobility so I need something I can carry around easily so probably I'll go with the x-slim. Also, I'm picky with the dimensions and the U3 is too big for the Y580. Don't remember the X3 or the ergo thing, but comparing them side by side is a good approach (at least for me). You can compare the fan airflow as well.

Cooler Master - Leading Provider of Computer Case | Cooler | Power Supply

Select you area, then Products > Laptop Accessories > Laptop Cooling Pads (or Notepal on Series)

To compare the products select any product then go to support and select compare to other products. Or follow this link (US) Product Comparison - Cooler Master

    Hope this helps :)

Can someone please confirm if the Y580 versions that come with an mSata SSD actually make use of Intel SRT ?

I'm reading conflicting posts, some say that it doesn't support it at all, others say it supports RST and not SRT, and vice versa, and in one case, that it needed an update to make use of it.

Yeah there is no access to the fins like I've had on otherlaps.

We'll need the 'keep the fan from spinning with a toothpick while blowing air into the laptop technique'

Also there is a Fan dust extraction "feature" in the Lenovo Energy Management app under System Settings. This appears to turn the fan the fan to max on and off over several minutes. Based on the amount of air the fan pushes at max (much less then the clevos on fn+1 for instance) I doubt it's very effective. The plus side of that is even on max fans the fan system isn't very loud.

One thing to consider is to ensure the size of the mesh (of cooling pad) covers the bottom of the laptop completely, Y580 is a bit longer ( side to side) than some laptops (40cm).you don't want it to hang over the edges of the cooler or the bottom vents to be covered off. Y580 vents are in strange positions, U3 might look big but it is quite light and fully covers the bottom part, plus since it is open frame, air can easily flow in even if the fans are off.

I did lots of research and came to conclusion I compromise the size of U3 for the functionality and effectiveness of cooling it has.

    Hope this helps :)

Hi. I agree with you. I consider that the U3 is the best for this laptop. The thing is that where I live (South America) there's no U3 model, just the X3, ErgoStand and Infinite EVO. So I'm making up my mind between these three options. Thanks! :D

Well can't you buy it online and have it delivered to you ?
I am not in USA and actually purchased my Y580 via a friend in the states and asked it to be sent over as this model doesn't exist in my country , or if it does , is being sold by individuals with $500 over the price I paid ( with shipping ) :)

Yeah, that's what I'm actually doing with the laptop but I'm paying for the delivery. The thing is that buying the U3 in the same way will cost me more than twice the original price. I have the X3 and the other models available here for 10$ bucks more the original price. That's why I was asking if those models are enough for the Y580 or do I really need the U3. Thanks! :D

your temps look fine. i have the same battery problem as you, and i think a few other people posting in this thread mentioned the same thing. as soon as i unplug, the framerate drops like a brick, even on high performance or lenovo dynamic graphics power plan. sometimes it does in fact stutter too. it seems like the graphics card underclocks itself whenever its on battery, as shown by this screenshot:

    Untitled.png .
(that random spike while plugged in was when i died and the game reloaded, nothing to worry about)

does anybody here know why this is happening, and if there is a setting to prevent it?

Hi, greets am new to the forum and the thread. Hope a Y580 owner can help me out please.

I live in the Philippines and am thinking of newegging two of this particular Y580 model (20994EU) over to me: Newegg.com - lenovo IdeaPad Y580 (20994EU) Notebook Intel Core i7 3610QM(2.30GHz) 15.6" 8GB Memory DDR3 1600 750GB HDD 5400rpm DVD±R/RW NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M Under specs it says that it also includes a 64GB SSD

I know it doesn't have a 1080 screen but thats no biggie as I would mostly use an external monitor (VGA) and projector (HDMI) with it. My question is about that seperate 64GB SSD drive as I am not yet that familiar with SSD drives (current laptop is Core2Duo, time to upgrade). Will I be able to "decouple" that thing from the sort of cache function it now has and install Win7 onto it alone (without the use of the spinning 750GB drive). Is the 64GB SSD drive that comes with these Lenovo's capable of that? Seems like a win win to me if I can do that, have a 64GB SSD drive as my OS and then that 750GB spinning drive for storage or what not. Is this idea feasible?

    Cheers :)

Hmm I can't find the Coolermaster U3 as far as a cooling system goes, and or anything else that seemed to be on par, except the Cooler Master Notepal X3.

Any idea if the X3 will work well with the Y580?

    Hi andyxoxo;

Yes you can install the OS in the mSATA and use the HDD as a storage. But please notice that the SSD is not the same as the mSATA (or mSSD). The Y580 comes with an mSSD, not SSD (despite the description). The Y580 has three spaces available, 1. main HDD, 2. optical drive, and 3. mSATA. Make sure to follow the guide for a clean install that can be found around this forum.

Bought a Y580 for $764.00 CAD (625 Euro)! So far the long wait in shipping has helped me out, because originally the Y580 cost me $849 before tax, but after calling Lenovo to cancel my order (i was irritated about the shipping), they offered me 5% off the pretax amount. After haggling for a while, I ended up with a 10% discount off. I don't mind the longer wait for that extra $91 off! :)
fyi its the 1366x768 model- the cheapest one.

There is always problems with everything you see, nothing is perfect but if I was going to compare the heating of Lenovo and HP , I would be worried about HP and try understand the concept of heating for y580.

I am using Cooler Master u3 to assist with cooling it down, it is not major but helps to maintain a normal temperature. But the reason behind heating is the nature of i7 Quad core and the GPU. yes, they get warm but so any other laptop with similar spec. For the price this is a great laptop.

Though decision making is upon you :)
