system as a whole and all components are kept cool, the cooling system for the cpu and gpu works great. the only thing that gets hotter than expected and that most people here have experienced is the hard drive, which is not affected by the cooling system and sits right between the cpu and gpu, and can get to about 60C when cpu and gpu are under full load. ive checked the specs for the exact model of hard drive, and it says that the operating temperatures are 0-60C so this isnt a HUGE problem (the hard drive isnt hot when under normal use). however, my guess is that many users have decided to upgrade to an ssd, or will be doing so within 1-2 years as the ssd technology becomes more cheap and available, so there should be nothing to worry about. everything else about this laptop is amazing to me and i dont regret getting it at all. make sure to get the 1080 screen, its amazing!

For those of you who replaced the glossy FHD screen (LG LP156WF1-TLC1) with a matte screen from AUO, do you know of any reputable screen resellers in the USA?

    EDIT: I think I answered my question - laptopscreen.com

I'll be going with the X3, personally. Even though I don't have access to the Ergostand, I would STILL go for the X3 even if I did, for cooling that is.

One more question . Screen resolution 1366x768 is good enough or it's better to pay more and buy 1920x1080?

This might seem like an odd question, but is it safe to use this laptop in sub-freezing temperatures outside (gaming)? This winter will probably get below freezing a few times, with lots of snow. I know the Y580 has a bit of an overheating problem, which the weather should fix haha, but I was wondering if it's dangerous and could freeze/break some component of the laptop with the drastic temperature change. No need for a cooling pad if nature can do it :p

Yes, it's very light and easy to move around. My girlfriend also sometimes uses it in bed for her MacBook pro. I was considering the U3 cooler initially, but felt this wad more portable.

Thanks for the info. Mobility is one of the things I'm looking for in the cooling pad since I have two "work stations" my home and my office. Therefore I need something easy to carry in my backpack without adding too much weight. Although so far my Y580 is not reaching crazy temperatures. Of course I don't have any games yet :(

The purpose of cooling pad is to provide correct and sufficient cooling to the laptop, with that model you mentioned, I suspect two vents at the bottom are being partially blocked or cool air doesn't reach them properly.

U3 is portable and light enough as it comes with a strap which you can use it as a case for the laptop( you can find photos of it on the net). But beside from that, I found it the most suitable cooling pad for this model as fans can be placed directly beneath the vents to provide most amount of cool air. and none of the vents are blocked by the edges of the pad.

Just my 2 Cents on this :)

I read a review saying the U3 was way to big to fit in a backpack, the backpack needs to be able to accommodate a 19" laptop at least. I'd go with the U2, although I see 3 vents on the bottom of my Y580 the U2 should be fine

You really need to place the laptop on top of the cooling pad and see if it blocks any vents or not , If it does , no matter how portable it is , not worth it and can actually cause damage.

I found U3 quite accidentally as I couldn't find it myself. Though didn't want to buy just something because U3 wasn't available.
So I was going to build my own. Very simple to do actually, you can buy aluminum mesh from hardware shop to the size you want, find a fan which is suitable with USB current and amp , place it where you want. find something to hold the mesh up and rubber feet to hold the laptop :)

Might sound complicated but its quite easy to do, only thing is to make sure your fan doesn't draw too much current and amp from USB.

I don't see why it would since it's so easy to undo... not like re-pasting or modding the bottom case or anything like that.

Well that doesn't matter for the company, as far as they are concerned, their machine was opened and tampered with, and they can't guarantee that YOU did a good job with a warranty.

I just received my Y580 a few hours ago...exceptional machine, very pleased with it so far.

Does anyone happen to have some useful tips regarding the laptop's battery? I mean, should the laptop periodically be left to run on battery mode for a bit or something?

Also, from the pre-installed software, what is worth keeping and what is not? I'm for sure uninstalling McAfee and getting Avast, though.

Thanks for the tip. I know that the U3 is the best cooling pad out there right know, but like The Big Kahuna said, it won't fit in my backpack. And Jaybs said that it brings down the temp by about 7 - 10 degrees. BUT to be honest, I haven't bought it yet 'cause I'm not 100% sure. And since I don't have any games yet, there is no rush :).

    howdy all:
got my 580 yesterday and am very impressed, one thing i didnt think of though, im use this as desktop replacement, and my old external monitor only supports 1600x1050 its a 5 year old viewsonic 22in, and im useing the d-sub to connect to, the 580 screen in 1900 x 1080 is awesome and it makes my old viewsonic look pitiful, anyway i will be ordering a new monitor that will support the 1900 x 1080, ....for those of you that use a external monitor and are using the hdmi port is it working alright or is there in quirks with it..

    thanks in advance

Well you're factually incorrect on this one. Both the HDD and the ODD are user serviceable parts so no removing and replacing them will not affect the system warranty. You should actually read through the warranty before commenting.

    Hi guys,
Several days ago I ordered the shipment of a Y580 w/ 1 TB 5400 RPM HDD + 32GB mSATA SDD. I also bought a Crucial m4 256GB mSATA SSD. What hard drive set up do you suggest I do? The laptop comes in about four days, and I want to get it up an running with a good hard drive set up the day it comes.

    Thanks!

    Hello

    I would like to buy Y580 i7 FHD with SSD S 830 256GB but... I have a few questions.

    1. If someone can give stress temperature of SSD in HDD bay ?
    2. If someone can give stress temperature of HDD in optical bay ?
    3. Person who have optical bay i please them to check SSD in optical bay- interface SATA II or SATA III and temperature in stress.

    Thanks in advance

I can confirm that bobo is correct. I work for an authorized Lenovo repair depot and someone having popped out the HDD or ODD would not stop us from servicing the unit. Only blatant physical damage (liquid spill, cracked chassis, etc) would cause us to deny coverage.

So, my guess from reading all your comments is that the 2nd best cooler for Y580 is the NotePal X-Slim right?
I wanted to know if anyone has some experience with the X3. Thanks!

Like huevo and tinytop said, McAfee is known to cause weird side effects to the laptop. So, I agree with them... UNINSTALL IT!! Get AVG or Avast (IMHO)

    Hi all,
I just received my Ideapad Y580 with the 500gb 7200rpm hard drive. Whenever I game and the fan kicks in, I hear a slight buzzing sound and I'm pretty sure it's the fan. Do any other owners have any insight as to what this is and if it's normal? I hope my new laptop isn't defective... Thanks in advance!
