Does anybody uses the y580 for some 3d cad? I need a mainstream laptop and like all the freatures on the y580 but will be using it for some autocad too.. I'm sure it will perform better than mi old dv4 with amd turion x2 and ati raedon 3200.. and the w530 is over my butget and also read that nvidia will not release anymore their performance drivers for autocad 2012 and newer

In the Y580 variant with the mSata SSD, there are two folders in the SSD, Application and Drivers.

From what I could tell, the application folder contains the installers for some software (youcam, mcafee and others), and the drivers folder contains many folders of seemingly important drivers and software, like audio drivers and such.

Can someone please clarify if EVERYTHING in there is just installers, and not actually installed there? Is it safe to move the files to the regular HDD?

I'm asking because that's ~3GB being used up in the SSD...

I can hear the fan of my Y580 even when web browsing (like right now!). Especially if I'm on battery.

Mine doesn't have the mSATA, so those files are in the Lenovo D: partition. Yes, you can move those if you like. Now... I think (as others have post previously) that the One Key Recovery button uses that folder to restore your laptop. If you move those files the OKR button may not work.

Any way to get Windows Media Player to stop popping up when I use the FN+play, stop, or next keys? Really obnoxious.

What you should do is backup those drivers. Some people complained earlier that the Y580 drivers on Lenovo's site are older than the ones that came with your system. If you want to have a good clean install experience, you will have to use those drivers.

Is there any way for the 660M to be visible always in HWMonitor? I can only get reads on it when I am in a game.

made the move to buy the y580 (i7-3610QM Processo, GeForce GTX660M 2GB, 8.0GB PC3-12800 DDR3 SDRAM 1600 MHz, 15.6" FHD LED Glare Wedge 1920x1080, 500GB 7200 RPM), it ships out this monday, and I want to be aware of the best things to do after I get it.

seems like some ppl mentioned doing a clean install when they got theirs. i'd like to do this as well, but is there any stock software that proves to be really useful that i'd want to re-download?

also, i don't think im gonna need my cdrom drive tbh, am I best off moving my HDD into the cdrom drive slot right away? i read it helps alot for the internal temperatures.

I would suggest doing a clean install. Make sure to back up the two folders on your drive called Applications and Drivers

After I did that, I used this guide for a clean install
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/ideapad-essential/680517-y580-driver-install-guide.html

After you check to see that your computer is working correctly (No obvious issues), then you can go ahead and put your HDD in the ODD slot. The HDD temps in the ODD slot are much cooler than the usual HDD bay. I do think that its only SATA II though. That didn't mean much to me since it was just for storage.

Was anyone able to install to install the veriface after a fresh install? It gives me error saying the application is for a Lenovo device.
Same with the other webcam app.
I copied and installed what ever was on the D drive of the original drive before installing a fresh win on SSD. but it seems not all of the apps were in application folder.

Could some one tell me what other critical apps I need to install beside from the ones on the second partition?

    thanks

Installed the BR writer (UJ260) that came with my Y580 into this enclosure: USB 3.0 External Slim O.D.D. Enclosure for Slim-SATA O.D.D. Devices (DVD-100U3)

Nothing but Verbatim BD-R (97457) and Taiyo Yuden DVD-R (TYG02) coasters. I wonder if it could be due to a bum USB cable included in the package. Anyways, I am disappoint.

Well, I had my Y580 for a month and enjoyed the hell out of it until one day I boot it up and all I see is a solid white screen. Call up Lenovo support, they say a technician will call me back within 48 hours and of course, no one ever calls. I call again, get someone reasonably intelligent who had me try a couple of things but no luck so he gives me an RMA number and says I will get 2 emails giving me further instructions. I get the emails, but wait until I get home from my current trip before I print them out and take everything to the local Fedex store. I start filling out the Inventory Control Sheet and see that they need a case number. I was never given one so I call up the support number again and the customer service rep tells me that the system is updating and they will call me back on Monday. Of course, I'll be back on the road again then so no easy access to a Fedex store.. Not too impressed by Lenovo support.

Well, my model is a MATA BD-MLT UJ260. That's what the device manager says.

Where did you buy it? What was the description? All Y580 models from Lenovo website are readers only (at least US website). There are other sites that sells the Y580 with a Blu Ray RAMBO... those can read and write.

I bought it from Lenovo US , the model with 500GB 7.2K HDD and FHD screen. I am not sure if its a Blu Ray burner as I don't have any blank Blu-Ray disc, that's why I have asked :)

Device Manager shows the model as the one I mentioned before. Is there a way I check to see if its Blu ray burner without any Blu ray disc?

if it says BR-RE in device manager, it's a writer. Actually from looking through this thread it seems like all y580's may have come with burners contrary to the listed specs, at least every model that's been posted has been a burner, i know mine came with a BT20N and definitely burns blu rays

I read somewhere that you shouldn't install the veriface software on SSD. Maybe that's the problem. Try to search about it.

Benchmarked my machine a little, looks like everything is normal but I can't dig back far enough to find other benchmarks to match it up against:

3DMark 11, Performance Setting (the free one)
    3DMark Score
    P2609
    Graphics Score
    2374
    Physics Score
    7380
    Combined Score
    2127
    Graphics Test 1
    11.62 FPS
    Graphics Test 2
    10.98 FPS
    Graphics Test 3
    14.72 FPS
    Graphics Test 4
    7.03 FPS
    Physics Test
    23.43 FPS
    Combined Test
    9.89 FPS

    PCMark7 (free version as well)
    2498

I'm using the 500GB 7200rpm model, so no SSD definitely hurts the PCMark7 score as that appears to weigh HDD performance heavily

    Uppsss should have written M A T S H I T A BD-MLT UJ260. Had to separates the letters because the post eliminates "S**T" from it buahahaha.

That's the same I bought (look my signature :)).

I thought the RE means REader as oppose to WR for WRiter.

I'll keep looking into this :)

Can anyone tell me which model(s) of the Y580 comes with a Blu-Ray writer? On Lenovo's site it says a Blu-Ray writer is an optional feature, but all the models show Blu-Ray/DVD. I have even spoke with Lenovo and they don't seem to know. So if you bought a Y580 from Lenovo's site and it has a Blu-Ray writer, can you tell me which model you bought? Thank you.

    Folks, I need help!

Can you PLEASE look at the left side of your Y580, into the thermal vent, and check if the copper heatsink is like this? Please look carefully, the alignment seems strange to me and I want to know if there is a problem or its harmless, or hopefully its the way it is supposed to be!

Alright, this is my vent http://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x350/vark234/DSCN0237.jpg and this doesn't look right to me....

on the other hand... on a review picture it looks the same http://www.laptopreviews.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/IMG_0792.jpg

Can someone please check themselves and confirm?

    Thank you very much.

Mine looks tilted as well. There is a small gap in the right side. So I guess is normal. :)

Yeah , I installed the webcam from the drivers folder on the original HDD, I might un-install and give it another shot, I also can't install the Youcam 9 or something like that) app which comes with the laptop. It talks about some dragon stuff is not installed or found. ( Sorry not in front of the laptop to give the exact names )
In what order did you install things? or which files did you use to do that?

    Thanks :)

    Thank,
Will give it another try and see if it works,
after all does Vericam work well on this laptop? I heard from some it doesnt work very smoothly. On HP laptops the face detection works very well and I am hoping to use it on this one too.

I noticed few of the applications which were installed on the original drive are not in Applications folder. Not that I would be too keen 9 Specially on McAfee ) but wondering why they are not there?

i dont use veriface ;) so i can not say if it is good or not. it worked well when i tested it.

applications can be found on the lenovo side.
power dvd 10 need an update that must be downloaded from lenovo not from cyberport.
for the rest (burning app. etc) i use better freeware.

A question for those using Samsung 830 SSD with the Magician software.
Do you get any error message when you run drive optimization within the application? Mine shows completed but gives an error, in the log it mentions something about being unable to write on the drive. The drive works perfectly.

I thought before submitting a ticket with Samsung, I ask you guys and someone might know the reason.
I have the latest drivers ( From Intel ) for the controllers and chipset.

    Many thanks

i plan on moving my 500 GB 7200 rpm HD once my y580 comes in.

question: can someone link me directly to a HD caddy that would fit the y580? I've searched but haven't seen a direct link to newegg/amazon/ebay. i wanna make sure I'm able to move my hard drive into the blue ray optical drive, I want the temperatures to stay low from the start of my laptops life.
