my vents look similar if you're referring to the slightly upward slope...

The vents on mine are similar too - a slight upward slope.

Mine is *just* ever so slightly tilted upwards. Then again, I believe this is a non-issue unless the fan is making a rattling noise or your unit is not dissipating heat effectively. Neither of which are seen in your post.

Thank you very much everyone. The heatsink is built that way it seems, so everything is as intended. Strange upwards slope, but hey if that's how the engineer's designed it, so be it!

Again, many thanks for the confirmation.

    I got mine from here
eBay Australia: Buy new & used fashion, electronics & home d
but he's sold out. All the ones on ebay are the same as you can see from the pictures.

Hey fellow Y580ers. I just got mine today from costco. I had another Ivy Bridge laptop, a HP dv6t-7000 before... but it crapped out after 2 months. Luckily Costco has a nice 90 day return policy for electronics. First things first, this machine seems by far better than the HP, though it is a couple pounds heavier. The 1366x768 screen has far less glare than the HP unit. The Lenovo touchpad is probably inferior, in terms of usability but it seems more durable than the HP one equipped with ill-fitting, loose mouse buttons. The Lenovo speakers are much clearer than the HP Beats crap, though it is down on bass. I'd rather have brighter, clearer speakers than muddy, bassy sound though.

The keyboard is worlds better but has a flaw which ill go into. It is probably the first thing i noticed... the flex on the left side. The left side keys (from q to about t) just do not feel right, and they make louder noises as the plastic around them flexes. You can see the flex visually too if you push down on these keys. Anyone else have this problem? It ruins this otherwise awesome feeling keyboard (the right side keys feel great and sound great. nice feedback, springy but not mushy). I tried to remove the keyboard but couldn't pry the board out after removing 2 screws. Maybe it just needs to be shimmed.

Im not opposed to returning it to costco and ordering another one, but i dont think I would order another one if they all suffer from this flexing. PS if you want to bypass Lenovo's customer "service" look at Costco if you are a member. The only thing it lacks is the 1080 screen ,which i specifically do not want for gaming since my framerates would plummet.

I pulled the trigger on a Y580 tonight! Woo Hoo. So excited for it to arrive. I ordered model 209945U. That is the one with the 500GB hard drive and HD display. I plan on adding a mSATA drive as the primary drive when then prices for the 256gb model come down.

From reading reports on here it can handle 1920x1080 fine apparently.

It gives me some buyer's regret now as I settled on the 1366x768 model because I figured the FPS would be better for games (plus the Full HD is not available locally in my region) and I am finding the higher resolution for working in Windows would have been much preferable. It has less vertical space than the laptop I upgraded from (1280x800)!

Apart from that I love the laptop, hopefully down the track I may be able to replace the screen with the full HD version, I would want to do it right though and have no problems... I might see if the Lenovo service center would be able to do it and provide the same screen as the Full HD version I think that is unlikely as they only deal with repairs usually.

PS. Nvidia/Lenovo please release some new GFX drivers! I am getting a few video-related crashes here and there in games like ARMA II, Payday: The Heist, etc. flawless apart from that (and the HDD heat thing is slightly annoying...)

I can't see this laptop handling Arma2 at 1080p on decent settings! But people all have different opinions on what acceptable performance is. I never want my fps to dip below 30.. other people dont mind. Some people freak out if they aren't getting 100 fps on a 60hz monitor when it wouldn't make a difference past 60 fps.

Could someone please provide some insight on the settings of the Lenovo Energy Management software?

I've configured it for battery life, but the other setting is set on 'balanced', what exactly does it do if I set it on high performance etc?

I'm mostly plugged in A/C if that matters.

    Thanks.

It's basically a custom power profile.

Just go to control panel -> power options -> change advanced power settings -> choose from balanced, high performance, lenovo dynamic graphics, power saver and check the settings there.

Hi, I ordered a Lenovo Y580 a few days ago and today I saw on the UPS website that they have shipped the laptop from the Netherlands, and not from China as I thought they would have, so now I'm starting to get paranoid thinking that it is a refurbished laptop that somebody had returned. Also because I ordered a wireless mouse with it that has been shipped separately from China, if it's not a refurbished laptop, why would they set up a stock in Europe for laptops and not for mouses?
Could you guys please tell me where yours had been shipped from?

    Hello everyone,

Can anyone link me a guide on how to properly setup your Ideapad Y580?
Firstly, I dont have SSD, hence I will be using the currently installed Windows. Secondly let me know which preinstalled Lenovo Softwares should I uninstall, which have been known to cause issues.

    By setup I mean:
    1- Shrinking default C: Drive
    2- Backing Up
    3- Installing/Activating System related software
4- Any other thing which might be installed/checking.

Is anyone here with Samsung 830 SDD having problems with running Performance Optimization within Magician software? I get errors which seems quite common amongst many users, So I thought to ask and see if others having similar error or not?

If you using the SSD have you installed IRST ? I haven't as I thought it would be useless with SSD, unless it is required and that's why I am seeing the error

    Thanks

Anyone else having keyboard flex on the left side? Is this a design flaw or just a one-off error?

It's a known issue. Personally, I find that if you just type and not specifically focus on it, it really isn't that much of an issue. The keyboard as a whole is very nice, much better than what you would get from the comparable HPs and Dells in my opinion, I can't speak for the ASUS N56 though

so in total, if the estimated delivery date for me is accurate, my y580 is gonna be in "Released to Manufacturing" mode for at least a week. is that supposed to be right?

i ordered the 209945U last wed from the Lenovo website.

edit: Order Date: 2012/08/15, Estimated Ship Date: 2012/08/26

They will send you an e-mail with a link in which you can check your status. You'll be lucky if you get your laptop in 10 days. I order mine on 6/13 and got it 7/11. I think the most common period is 2-3 weeks. Although some others got it in less than 2 weeks.

yes, i know that. what i mean is that sometimes playing dirt 3 its at 835 and sometimes its at 950

but in these days i discovered that if i turn on or restart the laptop plugged in, i get the full 950 mhz, but if i use the battery and then i plug in or in any time the laptop uses the battery (1sec is enough) and then i plug in the max clocks i get are 835 mhz instead until i restart the laptop

has anyone observed that behavior? can i change that?

I would suspect if you have Lenovo Energy management installed , the profile selected can play a role as well. While it is a handy tool, I find it annoying sometimes and I forget to put it to maximum performance or adaptive graphics. Not sure if it is directly related or not, but you can try it with different settings and see if it makes any difference.

Thanks for the reply. I agree it is easily ignored, but such a shame because as you say, it is otherwise a very nice keyboard especially for a laptop. I attempted to take the keyboard out and see if shimming it would help but I was unable to pry out the keyboard, I need some sort of plastic prying tool which I will see about getting. Either that or grow out my nails really long :D I know this isnt that uncommon an issue with other laptop models and makes, as there are solutions I've found from other people's experiences, ranging from using double sided tape, or thermal tape, or even felt to reduce the flex.

    Hi david,

Not sure if I can get pics of it. All i know is the left side of the keyboard has a louder noise and I can sometimes see the keys and surrounding keys move downward as I type. The right side is rock solid, feels great, and is much quieter.

In terms of noise, it almost sounds like a rattling instead of clicking/tapping.

I can't notice this, everything is the same on all sides for me, stable and firm.

Maybe it happens on some specific versions of the Y580? There are a few variants, after all.

The msata is used as a cache speeding up the HDD using Intel RST.

No, the windows recovery partition is a partition off the HDD.

Yes, here is a guide you can mostly follow

    http://forums..net/showthread.php/62-Lenovo-IdeaPad-Y570-Clean-Install-Guide

although I assume you may need to do something in the BIOS to turn off RST? not sure...

Yes, y580s that come with msata can use RST, machines like mine that didn't come with mstata need to have some sort of BIOS update from Lenovo that they charge money for (the last I heard)

I have heard that the intel RST doesn't actually work, even with the versions that come with the SSD pre-installed. Is there any way to confirm it? Thanks

Also, if the recovery partition is on the HDD (that should be right, there's around 50GB missing from general use), then what is the space in the SSD used for (excluding the backup drivers from lenovo, those are like 3gb), as my ssd right now is at 50% capacity, with nothing but these 3gb files installed on it.

Does anyone have a good carrying bag to recommend for the Y580? I had a really good one but the Y580 couldn't fit by a small margin :/

Just wanted to throw my two cents in.

Got my Y580 from newegg and so far I absolutely love it. This model is not the HD screen but it is fine with me because I dock it to my 24inch HD monitor.

Just got done with the last stress test for Guild Wars 2 and the thing ran like a dream. It did produce some heat but I have a U2 cooling pad arriving early next week so that will become a moot point. There are definitely a couple things (track pad) things I could potentially not like about it, but I just spent almost 900$ (this is a large purchase for my budget) on something so it will take a little while for the new toy effect to wear off lol.

    Hi guys,

I'm in the market for a 15" laptop, and I'm kinda torn between this laptop and the Asus N56VZ.
I've heard that this laptop's got heating issues, and that's really one of the few things that's got me worried about this. Otherwise, it seems to have mainly positive reviews, so yeah :)

What DON'T you guys like about this laptop?

I received my Y580 a few days ago and installed a 256gb Crucial M4 mSATA, which houses my OS, programs, and steam. I am using the 500gb HDD that came with my Y580 as storage.

In the power management settings, I have the HDD set so that it spins down after a minute of not being used. Since steam is on my SSD, the HDD is spun down while gaming, and it only rose up to 44 degrees after a good hour of skyrim.

If you want a sleeker design get the Asus. If you dont mind a thicker, bulkier laptop (that has better GPU) go for the Lenovo.

I will say that Asus's bloatware is insanely bad. I dont know about the N56VZ but my Asus netbook had bloatware so bad I thought it had a virus from the factory. Lenovo on the other hand aint bad at all. Their power management program is pretty slick.

As far as things I dont like, the touchpad is definitely mediocre. Not very responsive and takes too much effort to click the buttons-leading to fatigue. So you're forced to tap the pad to click, which sometimes doesnt register.

My 32GB SSD that came with the Y580 is reporting 24.4GB capacity. What else is taking up the space? It should normally be around 29GB. Is it some hidden partition? Of what?

How can I view the contents? System Management in Win7 doesn't help.

    Thanks.

    Hi Sage;

Right click on the "computer" icon in the desktop and select "manage". Then on the left directory look for "storage"and select "disk management".

In there you will find how all your drives are divided including the hidden partitions.

I don't have an mSATA SSD, but I think that the Lenovo partition (D: in my case, which is the one with 25 GB and only 4GB of those are used) is in your HDD not the mSATA. Anyway you can check that there.

    Hope this helps :)

Huh, but in My Computer there's no other HDD showing, other than C and D, and if D is a partition of C, then where is the actual SSD?

I do get temp readings, so it IS in there... and it is also shown in the Intel Rapid Software..

Can you upload a picture of it?

I think when you buy the laptop with the mSATA SSD, what lenovo does is a combination of the drives to act like one and also there is a "bug" in which the SSD won't appear. I read this in some place around this forum. I'll see if I can find it and link it.

    Edit;
It took me a really loooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time... but I finally found it:
Introduction to reinstalling Windows on the machines built with Rapid Drive

Look for 6. FAQ section close to the end of the document. Question 7.

All this of course assuming you have Rapid Drive Technoligy

wow broncito, my deepest thanks for your time and help, this is brilliant.

I DID receive the prompt that is described in the FAQ question 7, and was confused by it. I will take all this as a sign that the SSD is actually configured to run in rapid drive move. Besides, I DID notice quick load times, almost faster than my desktop's 7200rpm, which the 5400 HDD on the y580 can't beat alone. I guess it's working....

because if it isn't working, then what's the SSD for :/

After seeing the screenshot, can you tell which is the SSD and which is the HDD? From what I could understand, the ST9500 is the HDD and the SAMSUNG MZMP the SSD, but a second set of eyes would be better.

    Glad I could help.

I would say the same thing (Samsung being the SSD). Did you check the device manager? Based on the link I posted you can see it there.

    Hello again

I still didnt see any answers.
    I would like to buy Y580 i7 FHD with SSD S 830 256GB but... I have a few questions.

    1. If someone can give stress temperature of SSD in HDD bay ?
    2. If someone can give stress temperature of HDD in optical bay ?
    3. Person who have optical bay i please them to check SSD in optical bay- interface SATA II or SATA III and temperature in stress.

    Thanks in advance

    Igor
