Quite low 3dmark11 and higher Vantage than usual.

And of course resolution has impact on performance! If you tell graphic card to compute more complicated scene (more to see, higher res textures or fx etc) then it will need more power to do so. But degree of this impact depends on specific game. But to be honest I know that this impact may not be as big as someone could expect it to be...I would not choose notebook for gaming only by res to gain more fps but if someone has other factors like cost or something then...
And to be clear I will state this one more time - I didn't consider overall display quality because I didn't even know that there is so much difference between HD and FHD, so thanks for clearing that up for me. -
Strange thing is that every 3dmark test result tells me that my driver isn't supported or something to that effect. Can't remember the exact wording.
My OCD has kept me awake this long. Time for some sleep. Clean install in the morning. -
Best Buy already has the Y580 and it only cost $1099!!! But it was sold out online already. Lenovo should give us a rebate hehe.
The new Dell Inspiron Special Edition is also out on Best Buy with a fhd screen and 7730 vid card. Would be nice to compare it with Y580 and DV6. The new XPS 15 is expensive for the specs for me. -
Did the ODD and HDD swap allow you to still use the ODD or did you take it out to fit the SSD?
-
No, you put the SSD in the HDD bay and the HDD goes into a caddy which replaces the ODD. If you want to keep the ODD you need an msata SDD.
-
Not the best lighting or setup for pictures, but should be good enough. -
Would doing that void the accidental damage warranty?
-
As someone who has never owned a laptop before, what installed programs are needed? I'm planning on installing a SSD and starting over with a clean windows 7. Do I need to put any of their programs back on for it to run properly/save battery? -
Think nobody has posted any concrete battery life figures yet. Does anyone know what the lowest power consumption under idle (with screen brightness to 1 or 2 notches above minimum, battery saving mode, wifi on) is?

Would a drive like this be a good replacement for the one that comes with? I was going to order the one with a 500gb 7200rpm drive, since i believe the HD is the only difference between this and the 1tb + 32gb ssd version.

From the Box:
Manufacture Date: 5/30/12
EDIT: Apparently I got one of the early batches with 2 USB 2.0 ports and 2 USB 3.0 ports. Eh, my unit is running perfectly fine, so I'll just purchase a USB 3.0 hub (powered) if I need to extend one of them out. -

Can anyone explain this GPU-Z info? Why there is no CUDA for this 660M? Is it due to the Nvidia drivers in my unit? The driver version is 295.93; PhysX is 9.11.1111

Did a clean install and installed all the drivers but there is still one device in the device manager that is coming up unknown.
Not sure what it could be. Anyone have any ideas?
EDIT : I installed the drivers from the Lenovo support page. They are 255.55. The ones that shipped with the laptop were 255.53. However when I go to the nvidia control panel, all I see are 3 options for 3D settings. Nothing else. Not sure what the issue is but I think I'll have to go back to 255.53 and see if any options show up. -
I also plan on installing an mSATA SSD.
Does anyone know any good cloning/reinstallation to SSD guides? I have never used an SSD before and am kind of scared I will screw something up!
Is a clean Windows install recommended, or should I delete any junk on the original hard drive and then clone the original hard drive on to the SSD?
Thanks in advance for any advice! -
But I can use CUDA just fine in Media Player Classic - HC with LAV Filters

When you guys right click on the desktop and go to the nvidia control panel, what do you see in the window that pops up? I'm getting nothing but some 3D setting on the left panel.
I'm sure there are supposed to be more options there. -
Actually for me there's only "3D Settings" also with the choices "Adjust image settings", "Manage 3D settings", and "Set PhysX Config" listed below. And I haven't done a clean install yet.
EDIT. Here's a picture.Attached Files:

Where are people getting their video drivers and if I just received my y580 last week, which video driver should I upgrade to? And where to get it from? Thanks.
-
I'm going to be putting the hdd it came with into the odd slot. Can anyone link me to a good caddy to do this with?
-
To the people asking about battery life:
I've run mine through a couple of full charges and I'm getting roughly 4 hours with balanced settings, wifi and full screen brightness, all while letting utorrent run and browsing the web.
Oh and after syed's benchmarks I'm still very confused about how penguin managed a 20k vantage cpu score...
Did you beat your i7? Or plug it directly into the wall? -

Oh, I just remembered something. This Intel app for drive management showed me that HDD is 3Gb/s. Isn't that mean it's SATA II? I need to investigate this further when I get back...

Another question for you guys. So I hooked my 580 up to my plasma. Actually to my receiver. It looks amazing. Windows scales to my plasma no matter what the resolution is, however when I ran Diablo, it didn't scale. I had to run it at 1080 for it to fill the screen. I want to lower the resolution to 1600x900 for a performance boost, but obviously I want it to scale and fill the screen. Going to try hdmi directly to the tv instead of through the receiver and see if that does anything. Anyone have any thoughts on this? -
I might have missed it in the thread, but how well does this handle 1080p gaming? It seems like the 660M can run everything on high and all but the more modern games on ultra, but I'm wondering if anyone has any experience trying it out. Noise levels and heat are alright? Comfortable?
-
I have also one question. What is power of AC adapter ? I heard about 120W, isn't that a bit too low ?
-
Ok so..here's an update. I like it so far. I've learned to ignore the size and weight of it but I am thouroughly enjoying the laptop. I love the speakers and ESPECIALLY the keyboard. Best I've used in a while.
Battery life is pretty good for a standard fit. I like it. It's a great balance between work and fun. D3 is a joy to play! -
I posted a reply to a thread on the lenovo site but there hasn't been much help...
Is anyone else running into an issue where the nvidia display crashes when playing games? I've tried installing the latest nvidia drivers and I'm still having the same problem.
A fellow on the thread posted this image which is the same error I'm getting.

I'm running Diablo 3 on the recommended settings (looks mostly high in all areas). If I'm lucky I can stay on for 30 minutes but it usually craps out within 10.
sigh... -
Also got the game to scale to my plasma by plugging it directly into the tv instead of going through the receiver. Less convenient but at least it works.
This is so shameful, but oh well. At least the experience of playing Diablo on a 55 inch tv will be fantastic.. Yes, I know the wiring needs work. Everything has been a mess since the laptop came
-
That is sick setup not gonna lie.
-
Man, that setup makes me wish i had a tv that big.
-
@project3
Is the keyboard that good? Can't wait to get it on July. I'm pretty happy with the keyboard on my dv6 sandy right now.
@Syed
Is your wireless keyboard synced to the laptop? -
+rep to that ridiculous setup
-
The mouse and keyboard aren't the best for gaming, but they are both fine for diablo. However they both use the Logitech unifying receiver. It's tiny and connects up to six devices. Very convenient.
Been playing diablo for the past hour with my brother. Running great and playing great from the recliner
Edit : Played almost two hours of diablo 3 tonight. Running 1600x900 on my tv. All settings high except shadows which were on medium. Silky smooth with no issues at all. Running the Lenovo drivers that were on the second parition, 295.93. The biggest problem we had was figuring out what chat software to use since Skype was having all sorts of weird issues. -
I'll have it hooked up to an 21.5in LCD whenever I'm multi-tasking. -
@Syed
Haha, sorry for the noob question. I forgot it works the same as wireless mouse. I'm not used to wireless peripherals so I keep forgetting. I prefer wired mice because it's lighter, easier to ks.=D -
-
This is also in conjunction with the updated intel graphics drivers. Windows update should tell you that there are new drivers for intel.
Remember to uninstall the nvidia drivers, then update the intel ones and then install back the nvidia ones. Apparently you're supposed to install video drivers in that order.
-
Hey, you guys think we'll get any good deals for July 4th? With the Barnes and Noble discount I can get the FHD 1TB no mssd (if I really need one, I'll swap the BR drive out for a full SSD) for less than $1100.
Does Lenovo normally do good July 4th sales? -
-
Yeah, I've got info about new Intel drivers but I didn't uninstall nvidia...Nothing horrible didn't happen. Maybe this way of installing is only when fresh install? Because first I wanted to install nvidia (I forgot about Intel) and nvidia drivers told me to install Intel first.
