Ok guys, I've just recently noticed that after a while fps drops when I play Skyrim (to10-20fps). I have yet to try other games though. It usually happens after I quit and come back into it later a 2nd or third time. When I restart it seems to run fine (back to its 35-50fps). I don't think it's a heat issue because I monitor the temps and the HDD doesn't even go past 55. This happened with both the hold and new drivers.
Anyone have an idea why it does this? I may try and test it with other games to see if it's only with that game or if it's because of the GPU.
-
I don't know, but from what I've found, some games really don't like running in the background...
As a side note, getting an external monitor to work is a huge pain the if you don't want sound coming out of the HDMI. I figured it out in the end, but man... there really should just be a setting that allows you to use the audio out jack and an external monitor without diving into the menus.
Thanks for the note about the screen wobble, link.
As to the person that was talking about the HDD being slow, use it as an external drive and get a big SSD when the prices drop
-
Does that mean the older drivers were giving better performance? How did you revert back?
I'd like to do the same if so. I had no issues with the earlier drivers, I just figured that the new ones would be better because well...it was an update... -
My game wasn't really running in the background. I probably won't hve time to test and see why this happens until next week though.
-
I've noticed occasionally when I unplug my AC cable, then plug it in sometime later, the GPU won't kick in immediately if I'm mid-game. But this is resolved pretty easily by unplugging/replugging or restarting the game. It doesn't happen every time. Guessing it's a driver/optimus issue (I'm still running the beta drivers).
Does this sound similar? -
No, the whole time I've been using the laptop it's been plugged in. Though you're right it could be an optimus issue. I set my battery to protection mode so it stops charging at 60% (I wish I could set it t 80% but no luck finding that option) so maybe optimus swaps to intel when the charging stops?
This doesn't make sense though since the laptop should still be running off ac power and plus I set my preferred GPU on the control panel to always use the NVIDIA card. -
i don't like optimus battery performance.
if you look at the clock speed in gpu-z, you see it throttle in up down fashion, which causes major stuttering. 1 second at 800mhz, 1 second at 200mhz.
it's completely unusable in battery mode.
I don't know why they couldn't hold it at 400mhz stable, and provide slower, but smoother gameplay. -
Hi guys i ordered my y580 about a week and a half ago and it should be coming in pretty soon... i was wondering if you guys who own it have any tips for me?? it would be a great help. Thanks!!!
-
What do you wanna know?
-
Well, whatever you do, don't throw it against a wall or drop it. It might break
-
Can you customize cpu clock speeds and gpu clock speeds in battery mode ?
-
Yeah. I'm currently running unplugged and have the cpu set to run at 10% of max.
As far as the GPU, I just set the default gpu to the intel chip. I'll add programs to run there as I see fit.
I'm still a little shocked though. I'm just web browsing right now and estimated battery is like 3:45 - 4:00 from max. This is on 10% cpu. Brightness isn't all that high either and I'm not playing music or anything. Anyone have any more idea on how to get some more juice out of this thing? Maybe I'll get slightly better performance once I drain the battery a few times, but I'm not keeping my fingers crossed for that. Display's about 30%.
Honestly 3.5-4 hrs of juice is a little sad with the processor down this much and such. I was under the impression that it'd add an hour to the life. -
I got mine to display about 5 hours by lowering brightness, setting NVIDIA graphics to using integrated, and the biggest thing is setting it to power saver (disables some unnecessary aero functions). I didn't set CPU (if I did then it might last a little longer). The biggest power hogger is aero on windows 7, if you want to set a desktop theme where it is completely shut off and you should see some battery increase.
-
Hm. So maybe I should go into power saver and edit a new profile using that...
I'll try that. Thanks!
Edit: Okay. Have things set up for 10% using power saver as a default profile, so lets see what that does after the next charge. -
Windows battery life estimates are based on minute to minute changes in your usage. It's not very accurate. If you pause and do nothing, you will see your estimate increase.
If you load a webpage, you will see it drop.
you need to use the battery till almost dead to get a clearer picture how long it lasts, not relying on estimates when you still have 90% battery left. -
about the graphics card mainly and about cooling...
-
The benchmarks for the card here are fairly accurate. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M - Notebookcheck.net Tech
For me personally, I play on 1080p. Skyrim runs 30-40fps on ultra. League of Legends is 80 fps on very high, Torchlight 2 is 80 fps on all high, and Diablo 3 is 60 fps on high with some random drops to 45-50 fps (it stutters but I think its the games fault *none of my other games stutter* and not the GPU, Blizzard really needs to fix this). Keep in mind I OC'ed my card a bit by about 15%.
About heat, my GPU temp reaches around 70 degrees celsius max. My CPU gets to 60. These numbers are perfectly ok however my HD has reached 59 which is in general high for HD's. But it's not that problematic. For heat related issues check out this thread. http://forum.notebookreview.com/ideapad-essential/689006-heat-y580-big-deal-just-fluff-post-here-update-how-your-machine-has-been-running.html
It gets warm on the left side of the laptop but not unbearably hot. -
i was able to remedy my screen bezel creaking for the most part.
took the bezel off and smeared Vaseline on the clips. Much better now.
i wish i could loosen the hinge a little too. The design of the lid makes it a biotch to open -
do you know about fps for games like BF3, Borderlands 2, and possibly how the new medal of honor warfighter will run?? thanks voozers you have been alot of help
-
Can someone post a video or pictures of how to replace the main HDD in this laptop with an SSD? I'm want to get a Samsung 830 SSD, but I feel like I need a tutorial on how to install it. Any help would be appreciated.
-
From what I've seen BF3 can run on ultra with on average 35-45fps. Borderlands 2 is also in the same boat with around 40 fps average and it dips if there are a low of enemies (to like low 30s.) For Borderlands it also depends if you enable PhysX which probably would drop it a few fps.

Guide and pics here
-
hopefully lenovo doesnt be stupid and push off my ship date again, i called them yesterday and they said my ship date will be September 27 but when i called them today they said the 8th of october. when i told him what the other rep said yesterday he then told me it was going to ship on the 27th, i dont know if you can change dates like that... how long did it take you guys to get your???
-
Eh, this seems to be for replacing the ODD with an SSD. I'm looking to just replace the main HDD that came with the laptop with a Samsung 830 250gb SSD. I remember there being a link to some Chinese forum here that had a series of pics that really laid out how to open up the laptop and replace the harddrive. Can't find it now though. Sorry, I'm a totally amateur when it comes to this.
-
Funny...
I got mine in less than a week. Ordered on a monday or tuesday and had it by saturday.
I got the one with the SSD though. Maybe they had more of those since most people wouldn't pay the premium to get ripped off on an SSD. Worked for me though
-
It took mine 2 weeks. It depends on when you ordered and whether they are in the production or shipping cycle.
-
Read the post I referenced a little bit more carefully next time (chinese link is there). It's SSD<->HDD and HDD<->ODD. The latter is optional of course.
-
oh well hopefully mine comes in soon... is their likely to be problems with it when it comes in like with the 660m or parts being broken. because i saw some horror stories of people getting them broken in this forum
-
Mine has been pretty issue free, but the nature of parts are that sometimes they don't work right out of the box.
-
hey guys i have a quick question, does anybody know how to turn off the volume display / brightness display when changing volume/brightness with the hotkeys? this is because for a game like BF3, it gets annoying. when it pops up, the alt-tab states that the program is called 'Progress' but i cannot find any details online on how to stop it. thanks!
-
-
Oops, I see, thank you very much good sir!
Also, would you recommend I wait for the new Samsung 840 series SSD's or should I just go with the current 830? I believe the 840's come out in October.

i know this might be a old question but this forum is to long to go threw to find out... do you guys know if the gtx660m in the y580 is gimped at all or less performance than another pc with the same specs? i read somewhere that it was gimped or downclocked... is that true??
-
No, it is not gimped in any way. It is the same as all other gtx660m's.
-
Yep I agree it's not gimped.
-
finally got it and messed with a couple registry values and didn't make a backup before i did
can someone (with a 209945U, well idk if it matters) tell me the default values to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup
"SetupType"
"SystemSetupInProgress"
"SetupPhase"
"CmdLine"
"OOBEInProgress" -
Thanks but that's as far as I got on the internet, too.
The lockkey only takes care of 2 things: Caps Lock and Num Lock -
the waiting is killing me
-
Ordered and waiting? Don't worry it will come.
-
i hope because im running out of youtube videos to watch about it haha

This was the best one and she even did a gaming demo.Last edited by a moderator: May 12, 2015 -
i have seen that one lol i think i have been obsessing...
-
so on the y580 playing battlefield 3 will the gtx 660m throttle or boost to a higher clock?
-
hah. some misleading bits in the review.
not IPS display. if she dipped the screen, she would know.
she also demonstrates how it's a biotch to open the lid. Of the 4 laptops i've ever owned, this is the most cumbersome to open. -
do you know how the boost clock or throttle of the gtx 660 on this laptop is playing battlefield 3?
-
I want to pull the trigger on this laptop but I chatted with a guy from the B&N site and he said that adding an mSata drive would void the warranty. That me annoyed me so I must ask you guys if that is indeed true?
What I want to do is install the crucial m4 and use it as my main drive. I also asked the guy if all models have the mSata slot and not just the ones that actually have an mSata cache drive installed and he said yes, is this also true?
Has anyone had any trouble installing the m4?
Finally, are there any instructions as to how to install the OS on the mSata? Does the laptop come with a windows disk to do a clean install from? -
Not true, mSATA as well as the RAM slots and Hard Drive slot are supposed to able to ok for the consumer to upgrade as they see fit. I swear, some of these Lenovo customer reps....on the other hand if you ever need to return your computer make sure you reinstalled the stock Hard Drive, RAM, and also mSATA if yours came with one.
Yes there are instructions. There is a clean install thread guide already and it has been mentioned quite a few times in this thread (use the search function). No the laptop does not come with a disk, you have to burn an iso or put it on a usb to install windows. -
One of the RAMs of my y580 died on me. Now I don't have neither the time nor the nerve to contact Lenovo, I'm thinking I will just buy this: Crucial Single 4GB DDR3 1600 MT/s (PC3-12800) Notebook Module, CT51264BF160B. Do you think if I got this one, it would be compatible with the stock one that is not dead?
-
bump
do you know how the boost clock or throttle of the gtx 660 on this laptop is playing battlefield 3? -
why spend more money? lenovo will send you a new stick of ram for you to replace on your own.
they will also pay for return shipping to send the defective ram back.
they should send the replacement with 2-day fedex.
