Do you mean that I don't have to send my laptop? I do not think I have that option. If you know how it can be done, can you please give me a link or something that explains it?

Simply put all you need to do is call technical support in your country or customer service, explain your situation, and they are supposed to offer you that option (if it can be done where you live). They will cover shipping charges and everything too. Their number is on the Lenovo website under contacts.

I bought the 3 year full warranty on a model without an mSata cache but I am going to install the OS on a crucial mSata drive so if it breaks, how will I put it back to the way it is?

That would mean I would have to reformat the original drive to host the OS. That's a lot of BS! I could always backup the drive but your post basically just confirms that installing an mSata drive DOES void the warranty. That sucks because I already pulled the trigger. I hope to install 16GB of corsair RAM too.

I am going to be running a VM of SharePoint Server and VS and even my Desktop has trouble with it so I need all the power I can get.

Well that may not be true, I'm not sure if they care if you restored to the stock OS they shipped to you I think they just want the old hard drive. I sent my Y480 back and I didn't erase everything and they never said anything about it.

So yes, they gave me that option but the problem is, the RAM is damaged because of my error so if I ship it to them, I fear they might understand that and void my warranty. So back to my old question, would Crucial Single 4GB DDR3 1600 MT/s (PC3-12800) Notebook Module, CT51264BF160B be compatible with the build in RAM?

    oh. you broke it.
then you're on your own. I don't know how accidental damage warranty would apply in this case, if you have it.

you can check the crucial website to see if it is compatible.

however, usually any non-ecc ram stick will work, even if it doesn't say so.

Reinstalling windows did not help my gtx660m crashes, sadly. I'll be sending it back for repair today. Does anyone know if they'll give me a new unit or simply replace the GPU?

Hello, do you think it is worth waiting for MSI GX60 over this laptop? Both seems to be at same price level, with Lenovo having better CPU and MSI having quite better GPU. I´ll be using it primarily for gaming so GPU might seem more important but GW2 and other MMO seems to be much more reliant on CPU than other types of games.

Hi guys I have a question to ask you. My brother advised me to remove the batery from the laptop to prolong its life. The only problem I have is when I take it off I get frame drops in games. I think it is weird. Is there anyway to change some settings for this not to occur? For example i get 60FPS in games while plugged in and using the battery but if I remove it it goes down to 30ish.
    Thanks for your help.

You don't have to remove the battery, there's a function in Lenovo Energy management called battery protection where it stops charing at 60%. It's the same as removing your battery.

most likely will give you a new mobo or new unit.

however, you will probably have to describe how to duplicate your issue so they can confirm.

I had same problem with updates. There is one update you must install by itself to stop the computer from reverting back; it is KB2647753. Please install this by itself. Reboot and continue to update. This fixed the problem for me.

    Good Luck,

    Dave

    I've owned both as well.

I returned the Asus. The keyboard and touchpad were better, but I had issues with overheating. Many reviews have stated the same thing as well.

My cpu was reaching 98C. Not good.

The touchpad also doesn't sit flat. It worked fine though, but it was bent.

Overall, the battery life, keyboard, mouse, and matte screen were preferable to me, but overall the lenovo wins.

Im about to order this laptop from amazon. Just have a few questions though.

1.What are the temperatures of the CPU and GPU when playing games?
    2. And how sturdy is the lid because I need to carry it in my backpack with a lot of books.

    Thanks!

typically 70's, with room temp at 80F

    2. it's clammed up tight along the edges, but pretty flimsy in the center.
Do you have a Bestbuy or Office Depot near you? Check out the P580 or Z580 or Z585, and press on the lid. It's pretty much the same as that.

i've been playing with my y580 for a month now. been happy except for a blue stuck pixel and the horrible trackpad. I can live with the stuck pixel but the track pad has A LOT of flex. Could someone offer a solution to the flex on the trackpad. Thanks.

Just got my msata ssd installed. It's an ocz 30gb with sandforce controller and micron memory chips.

first ssd I've ever had, and I'm not impressed.

I reboot my computer so all the memory cache is emptied, then I run firefox portable completely from the ssd. It's really not much faster than running it off the spinning hdd.
ssd loads firefox in 4 seconds. hdd loads firefox in about 7 seconds, completely fresh off reboot.
and with 8gb of ram, a lot of stuff gets loaded from memory later on anyway.

what's a lot of flex? The lower right and left corners are not sealed to the palmrest, but i wouldn't consider it "a lot of flex".

when i first got the laptop, i opened it up, and used several layers of tape to cushion the clicker button so that the trackpad was pushed up tighter against the palmrest.

I don't think it's THAT delicate. I would use a sleeve or case though. The one I have is a little bit too intense, but I got it for free so I'm not complaining.

I see on the Canadian Lenovo site they are now offering the Y580 with the Intel Core i7-3630QM Processor( 2.40GHz 6MB) as opposed to the 3610QM. And also notable is that they are no longer offering the 1TB+32GB SSD option. Has anyone tried out the 3630QM or know what kind of difference this should make for overall performance? (I can't imagine it can be that much).

edit: nvm the +32GB SSD option is back

100 mhz difference. no big deal

i guess that's why they were offering rebates and deals on the 3610qm recently to clear out the old stuff.

Open up "Power Management Options" which is under Programs->Lenovo->Energy Management->Power Management Options (in case you removed some bloatware from startup) and then go to settings and enable battery protected mode.

On a side note, does anyone know if there are any modded bios for y580 floating around somewhere?

You have to put it in the proper context. People are complaining about the HDD becoming hot during heavy tasks (read the numerous threads on this issue in this subforum). The CPU and GPU temps stay relatively cool (<82C on my part) when gaming for long periods of time.

several mm dead center??! no exaggeration? are you using 20 pounds of pressure? You rarely even need to click. Simply light tap will register as a click.

my pad does not have that much travel. I almost don't believe it.

you unscrew the case to get to the trackpad. Maybe the plastic holding the trackpad broke in yours

Yep like Ssri said, it's only the HDD everything else is cool. So far though I've had high HDD temps from timd to time (on average 55 degrees Celcius to 59). I've had no heat related problems but then again for an HDD it is too early to tell. As long as you do't strain it every day for extended periods of time (like 6 hours of gaming straight everyday) then it should be ok.

Though I am not yet a Y580 owner (probably an opening phrase that annoys some of you), I am planning on ordering it within the next 24 hours. This thread is also extremely long but I have spent a lot of time reading the last 20-30 pages of it. Yet even doing so, I had a few questions.

    1) I have seen on others sites a lot of talk about the Wireless Card being an issue. Primarily the fact that (a) It takes a full minute to connect to the internet after boot up, which seems ridiculous and (b) It runs slow. I haven't seen many complaints about that in the pages I've read on this thread, so I wanted to see what all of your thoughts are on those issues and/or if a fix was issued that resolved it (hence no more comments on it).

    2) I am not a gamer by any means and when looking for a new laptop I have had a focus on weight and battery in addition to performance. Obviously both of those are negatives here. The problem is that the cost is fantastic. The DELL XPS 14 Ultrabook (4 lbs, much better battery) is $400 more for less overall. The XPS 15 is $500 more and weighs the same but has the better battery. The other thing both of those have going for them is what I am told is solid build quality. The 15, however, apparently has atrocious WiFi issues while the XPS 14 has a bad screen.

I've looked at ASUS, HP, Sony, Samsung, DELL and now Lenovo. It seems like the Y580 is the way to go right now at basically $1100 for 3rd gen i7, 8 GB, 1 TB + 32 SSD, FHD 1080P, etc.

    3) It seems like a lot of people have mentioned the "SSD option" here. Are you simply referring to the + 32 GB SSD and not a main SSD?

Thank you all so much in advance for your help. I'm going to go back to reading the other pages of this thread and the rest of the forum. I'd really appreciate all advice you can give me.

Hi and welcome. I hope you will enjoy the Y580 if you go on and order it.

    To answer your questions:
    1) As soon as I boot up my windows my laptop is already connected to the internet and as soon as it is on the desktop I can for example click chrome and it works. It is not slow. The router is 2 floors up and i get 4 bars somtimes 5(max).

    2) I can not say much about battery since I have NEVER used it unplugged yet. My university just began this week and I will be needing it now at classes so I might tell you later how the battery life is. But yes performance is great and many games run very nicely maxed out. The build quality is not bad. I mean yes you have to take care of it, specially the lid because the aluminum is thin. But I think NORMAL usage would not make anything bad go with it.

Like many people mentions including me, the HDD gets a bit too hot when GAMING. Normal use I would not worry. Even if it goes beyond the 55 degrees celsius I would not worry about it as long as it does not happen to often. Basicly nothing horrible will go wrong only maybe you would be ending the life of the HDD prematurely. So I am sure that IF you will game you will have plugs around you. So just buy a notebook cooler. The Notepal U3 from Coolermaster is great for this laptop. Sure it is a bit expensive, I got it for around 40 euros but its very good. You get 3 fans that you can position anywhere you want so you can put them directly under the vents. So IF you game, game INSIDE xD. For school or university it shoud not get worrying hot (HDD).

    3) Well some of us (including me) ordered the Y580 with the 32 gig SSD with it. When you get it brand new the SSD and HDD are merged together using some program/technology from lenovo. But you can seperate them and use it seperatly as SSD nad HDD. I have done so and it takes just about 20 seconds to boot into windows and all the stuff already running (skype, msn, steam, etc...)
Some people bought their own SSD and put them in. It is your choice.

If you have any more questions feel free to ask :)

    Zakon

Thanks so much for the answers Zakon. I would be interested in hearing what everyone else also has to say about the Wireless Card and my questions. Again, I saw TONS of user reviews saying the Card was an issue...so I was not sure if there was a fix or just something weird. All of the user reviews I saw with issues were on the Lenovo website. As far as the SSD situation goes...I was just making sure you couldn't buy the laptop with a 256GB SSD, for example, as the main drive. The only thing you can get is the 32 GB as an extra. Do they have these in any stores like Best Buy? The build quality issue that link626 keeps complaining (not using that in a derogatory way) about worries me. My last laptop was a DELL XPS 1530 that was solidly built as a whole but had some major problems on individual parts.

I got my y580 about 2-3 weeks ago and since my graphics card on my desktop just died and I've grown accustomed to using the monitor for reading textbooks online while doing the work (I bought the 1366x768 model of the y580). The laptop doesn't upscale/adjust for the swap between whatever aspect ratio that it has by default and I'm wondering if anyone knows how or what to adjust the settings for going from 1366x768 to 16:9

The wireless issue can be fixed by uninstalling McAfee that comes pre-installed with the Y580. I had the same problem where it would take a minute or two for the wireless to connect, but uninstalling it fixed the issue. I was going to uninstall it anyways since I always use Avast.

The bad thing about the WiFi card is that it's only a single-band, so if you wanted dual-band capability, you would need to purchase an external WiFi adapter or wait until someone hacks the BIOS to remove the whitelist and install your own wireless card with dual-band.

I wouldn't worry too much about build quality either. I purchased the following laptops and tried them out before finally settling on the Y580:

    HP Envy 15 (2012)
    HP DV6T QE (2012)
    Dell XPS 15 L521X
    Asus N56
    Sony S15

Of the aforementioned laptops, I would say the XPS 15 had the best build quality with the aluminum and gorilla glass. However, I ended up returning it due to the throttling and WiFi issues. I chose the Y580 b/c in my opinion, it was durable and offered great value for the price. I commute with it to downtown Chicago daily so I've gotten used to the weight and I find it to be a durable laptop. I had a Macbook Pro before, so going from that to the bulky Y580 took some getting used to, but if you can look past the exterior, you'll find a beast of a laptop.

    i clean installed windows.

wifi card is par for the course. connection time is typical.

i didn't feel it was any different from the cheap atheros wifi cards in my previous laptops.

I run off a broadcom-based router, and have not had any disconnect issues

I've only been able to get rid of some of the creaking sound in the lid. But all of my laptops have had this issue. They're all held together by too many plastic clamps.
When the lid sits in a position for a while, then you adjust the lid a little, it will creak/crackle for a second. But if you keep adjusting for the next 5 seconds, there is no creaking. It's like I stretched it out after it tensed up. For me, it's more likely to creak in warm room temp.
The lid is still intact. But if you're extremely picky, you might find it annoying.

Looks like I'll be taking the plunge (after reading a sizable chunk of this and other threads) and should hopefully be a Y580 owner tomorrow evening. The only slightly irritating thing is sourcing one with a 1920x1080 screen seems virtually impossible in the UK. I'm not overly fussed as it's likely to be connected to an external monitor or television anytime lack of screen real estate is going to be a bother.

That said, for £850 I just don't think it can be beat. Genuinely excited by this purchase.

I order mine on Sep 23 and it's showing expected delivery at Oct 22. So I'm guessing it takes a whole month. Can't wait!

1- which of the wlan driver I should install from CD?

    intel wlan
    atheros
    atheros(combo)
    broadcom
    broadcom(combo)

and How can I know what wlan card install on my laptop without open it physically? The non-intel driver available at lenovo site is different from CD.

2- The right-down corner of LED is hot. Is it normal?
3- I was going to format one of my partition in windows interface(750GB), after installing all of driver ,I notice that it disappear. I went to disk management but there is no action available to format it. it was reserved as OEM drive, like 1GB partition!
4- in hotfix folder, there is zpodd file which has 1KB size! is it intel zpodd register v2 that everyone talk about it?!

Bought one when I was out of town (750GB drive, lower resolution monitor).

I've gone and disabled all the garbage that I don't want loaded, put 16GB in it, and turned off swap.

Wow...amazing machine. Haven't put it through the ringer too much with games. Just starcraft 2.

My only concern was one screw taking off the panel to put in the ram. Must be improperly aligned or something...frickin' thing was a pain to get out and I didn't bother putting one of the screws back in.

Nice piece of hardware. Glad I bought it.

The only thing holding me up on buying this is the build quality. Not the trackpad (which some of you guys have issues with) because I used it in store and thought it was fine (I mostly use a mouse anyway) but because of the lid/screen. It is so flexible and thin that even closing the lid and picking up the computer my thumb pushed it in a bit. I am not a huge portable guy - it mostly will sit on my desk and be moved up and down the stairs - but solid construction is important to me.

For that reason, when I picked up the DELL XPS 15, I was blown away. Man, that thing is solid. More expensive and a bit less powerful, yes, but I'm not a gamer so that won't matter much to me. The problem with that machine is I'm reading that the Wireless Card issues are TERRIBLE.

Anyone care to sway me or at least expand on the points I'm making above?

most laptops will have a thin and flexible lid. You should see the other ones in the store.
The one on the y580 seems to have some empty space between the metal and the screen inside. So when you push down, it will depress some.
That said, you certainly don't want to sit on it.

the xps is not in the same class as the Y580. It should be compared to the inspiron 15r
the xps has a lot of magnesium alloy and aluminum, plus the edge to edge gorilla glass. It better feel solid.
The xps is going after the macbook.

if build quality matters that much to you, you won't find a quality one under $1000. Might as well get the xps.

But let me say this- If you scratch the XPS, you're gonna cry.

Should I be concerned about my gtx660?

I can run league of legends and minecraft at a constant 60 frames (which are currently the only games I put on my y580 since I mainly use this for school) with the Intel HD 4000 but when I switched to the GTX660m graphics card I witnessed screen tearing constantly, buggy textures and even game crashes...

BTW The screen tearing was while league was running graphically on medium and intel HD 4000 was sustaining the 60 fps with everything but shadows on very high
