Mine arrived yesterday. Even though it's only the i5 / 720p version I must say I'm delighted. It quite happily ran 4 virtual machines which is going to be a great help when studying for professional exams. I rewarded myself by playing rift on ultra settings for a few hours, the hard drive only hit 49C at its peak (laptop on nothing but a flat surface), so I'm not sure if the overheating issue is only with the i7? I've ordered the notepal u2 cooling pad anyway so hope to see a little more improvement on top of that.

Hopefully I'll get mine by tomorrow, i7, sadly only a 720p available, but for the price in my country it's pretty much good, can't wait to test it!

    Got mine for $950 (still waiting for my $100 rebate to make it $850). Added a Samsung 830 Series 256GB SSD for $180 and then 16GB Cas 10 DDR3 memory for $70. $850 + $180 + $70 = $1100. I could easily see this reaching the $1200 mark with a larger SSD.

Thanks for clarifying that for me. I'll look at them side-by-side at Best Buy and make a decision. The flexibility of the screen just really kind of bothered me. But I guess if that is the only issue on a laptop that packs this much, maybe it really is minor after all.

I've also begun looking at the U410.

I ordered my Lenovo Y580-20994NU from Lenovo.com yesterday. The website said estimated ship date was 10-13-2012 yesterday, but my order status says it will be shipped today.

What a great combo of specs for price. It won't be as nice as the macbook pro 15 I am returning (too expensive for what it is) but the value sure is there. It's not the prettiest girl in the room, but definitely seems to be a keeper!

    Hi,

I am new here and I wanted to ask you guys one thing. I am planning on getting the IdeaPad Y580 Laptop - 209945U, the one that has the 7200 500 GB HDD.
Now I know that there is the one that has the 1TB + SSD option but I was just wondering that in the model I am interested in, there would still be the msata slot where I can plonk one down right? I am assuming that all Y580 models would have this slot and I can use it at a later point of time when I need to.

I did try reading through this thread but I really could not find this out. I have never dealt with SSD before, so I was interested in knowing.
Also what would you people advice - the 500 GB 7200 rpm version or the 1 TB with SSD version?

Please let me know, it would help me finalize the order.

    Thanks,
    Ananth

Yeah, they all come with an empty msata slot available for later use. Greetings.

Thank you. So I would assume that I can go ahead with the 500 GB 7200 for now and later plonk down a mSata SSD right? Or do you think there is any merit to get the one with 32GB SSD?

Also I have one other question - what is the difference between
    Blu-ray/DVD-RW and Blu-ray /DVD Combo?
This is the difference between 20994PU and 209945U models (other than the 2.4 GHz processor). I would rather spend the same money on the better processor but I dont know what the optical drive difference means? Can you explain?

    Peace

Im guessing its the same thing they are just using the world COMBO since it is like two in one optical drive. Can read DVDs and also Bluray.

    Zakon,
My doubt is if it would be able to burn. Maybe the DVD-RW means it can burn and the combo is a pure ROM combo. Does it make more sense to get the 2.4 GHz model?

I also have another question - I am getting this laptop via a friend in the US who is bringing it down to India where I live. Now if I run into problems will Lenovo India help out or am I stuck? Anyone who has done this or something similar?

    Guys, question again :D
I'm missing one very important gesture from OS X, the one when you in browser slide your fingers left or right to go back or forward. Is that a matter of browser or we could have this gesture too? ty in advance!

Well, I'm using Chrome and the three fingers swipe to left or right works just fine. However, it doesn't work for other programs for example Windows Explorer.

    Guys,
Just thought I would compile my questions again, can you please help me as I have to place the order for the y580 in the next 2 days.

    1. When the model says Blu-Ray/DVD combo, can it burn dvdsor is it a pure ROM combo? If it can burn then I can rather well get the 2.4 GHz instead of the 2.3 GHz considering they are priced the same.

    2. I also have another question - I am getting this laptop via a friend in the US who is bringing it down to India where I live. Now if I run into problems will Lenovo India help out or am I stuck? Anyone who has done this or something similar?

    3. mSata SSD - If I buy the model that has only the 7200 rpm 500 GB HDD, then I need that special screw right? Being in India I dont know how easy or difficult it would be to get that? So would it be wiser to get the 1 TB 5400 HDD with 32GB SSD for that extra 100$, I am not sure how to decide this. Also is the SSD that is being shipped not good enough? Can we not use that one to install windows on it instead of having to buy a new one? Or is it just space that is the limitation? I thought 32 GB is plenty for putting windows 7 onto it, has anyone used that.

Please answer my questions and help me take a wise decision.

    Thanks,
    Ananth

    3. You can buy that special screw from ebay, I'm from South America and ordered it with no problems. I do think that 32gb is not enough, buy the one without msata ssd and order the special screw from ebay. Greetings.

Makes sense soulkyo, have found the screw on amazon, so I can now stick to the 500 GB 7200 rpm.
Lastly - I am going to try to get the crucial m4 256 GB msata SSD at $197 from amazon, that should be good enough right? Mushkin Atlas and mydiditalssd cost a 50-60$ more.
Thanks for the prompt advice :)

    search for m2x3 screw

the cheapest one is 100 screws for $3.50, but you have to wait for it to arrive from china.

you can probably get it faster and cheaper by calling your local computer shops.
or if you have an old laptop, one of the mini cards might have m2x3 screws.

For those of you who don't like the plasticky feel of the touchpad (like me), I ordered one of these touchpad covers here: TectY, PC Laptop Touchpad Protector Skin

I installed it today and it feels much better and works well even when you have moisture on your fingers. Gestures seem to be working better too. Y580.jpg

    Hi,

I am following this forum and now registered.

Thanks to all your information I ordered the modell with Full-Hd, BlueRay burner, Msata 32 gig and 8 gig of RAM for 1.099 € at Amazon Germany. Production date of laptop 22-Aug-2012.

I replaced the Msata, though, through a new Msata Samsung 830 256 Gig. On this I reinstalled the whole system with W7. I kept the 1 TB HDD as second drive but reformated the main partition leaving the rescue partition intact using EASEUS. Also reinstallation of One Key Recovery and One Key Home Theatre worked without any issue.

Everything else worked out perfectly so far. Only two small issues:
    - The original blueray burner software could not located either at Lenovoa nor the distributor (in the correct BD version). I now use ImgBurn and CDBurnerXP which are free.
    - The latest Nvidia driver refuses installation. It can't detect the GTX for some reason. Currently I keep using the one which was shipped with the machine

My interim evaluation: Perfect laptop. Only the touchpad looks cheap like hell. Therefore thanks for your hint. I am going to order one of these covers.

Just to compare and doublecheck: What measures did you sent them?

    Regs,
    Fritz

105 width, 70 height. Fits perfectly on the Y580 touchpad and gives it more of a matte type finish and feel.

    Hello to all again!
I am an absolute noob when it comes to opening up laptops etc. Is there some video tutorial where someone like me can put in the msata ssd? I am referring to just putting in a new msata ssd into the slot (nothing to do with removing the hdd or anything to do with the odd). My search in you tube provided no results, I know a lot of people have done this out here, if someone can lay out some visual instructions it would be of tremendous help.

    Thanks,
    Ananth

From the first picture I got the 2 screws that need to be removed for the back cover. After that I dont see any pic for the msata ssd, it is all to do with HDD, odd and mobo teardown. Can you please point me to the msata ssd screw?

Also everyone says that the Samsung ssd is the best but I dont think they have a msata ssd retailing right? I check amazon and I could only see the 2.5'' version and not the msata version?

I ordered my y580 on Thursday and I got an email that it shipped today.

I went with the full 1080p screen, 1TB hd with 32GB mSATA, Blu-ray, 2.4 GHZ, 8 GB version.

I go to order status and it still says in production. Waiting for a tracking info.

yes. if you have the realtek audio drivers installed, in the recording devices menu, right click, show all disabled devices.
then the stereo mixer will show up, and you can use that to record digital audio.

however, with youtube, it's just better to get a firefox plugin to download the youtube video as mp4, then use mp4box to extract the aac audio.
then you can use mediacoder to re-encode to whatever format you want

Why the heck would this be disabled in the first place...

Now, I cannot install MP4Box. All I get is installation errors. Any suggestions?

    Thanks again.

Sorry for this dumb question, but is it possible to fit 3 hard drives on the y580?

My y580 came with a 1TB 54000rpm Hard Drive. I have some cash to spare and im thinking of buying an mSata SSD (for the free mSata slot), a regular SSD which will replace the regular 1TB hard drive, then move the 1TB to the optical drive.

    Has anyone done this?

One small question - given that the blu-ray/dvd-rw and blu-ray/dvd combo are one and the same (and all other parameters equivalent), it is better to go for the 20994PU than the 209945U as the processor on the former is better right?
Please let me know as I am planning to place the order tonight :)
    Thanks,
    Ananth

I finally bought my Y580 a few hours ago, and I'm loving it so far! :D

    here are the specs:
    CPU: i7-3610QM
    RAM: 8 GB DDR3 @1600Mhz
    64 GB SSD + 750 HDD
    DvDRW
    15.6" 1366x768 HD LED
    3 years warranty
all this for $1300, which is pretty good compared to the other laptops' specs for prices in my country, would love to give it a bit more review, but I don't have much time now, so I guess later.
Though one thing that's a bit annoying is the mouse-pad, the surface is sorta rough, but I guess I won't realize it that much considering I'll use a mouse most of the time lol

    Hello all !

Sorry for the new post, just wanted to add in another question. Please reply to me, I need this info for confirming the order

I have 2 questions. I am considering the models - 20994PU and 209945U, the comparison specs are a trite confusing, so here goes:

    1. The blu-ray/dvd-rw and blu-ray/dvd combo are one and the same right? In that case the one with 3630 2.4 GHz is a wiser investments right?

    2. Also in the models mentioned above is any of them a blu-ray burner or just ROM? I am reading some conflicting information elsewhere saying that it is indeed a burner.

Also http://www.lenovo.com/shop/americas/content/pdf/system_data/y580_tech_specs.pdf seems to suggest that the 209945U is indeed a blu ray burner but nothing is there about the 20994PU model. Now I am inclined towards the 209945U as it has the burner and a 100MHz is not that important.

Please let me know as I am planning to place the order tonight

    Thanks, Ananth

Hi. To my knowledge the one that comes with BR Burner is the one that says BluRay RAMBO. But, if you've read it in the lenovo offical page then go for it.
