I'm jumping all over the place with my laptop decision. I know this isn't the same as the u2442n by any means, but, what one lacks in performance, it makes up in size. Anybody have words of wisdom to help me with the decision?

Also, if I end up with the y580, should I get the 1tb + 32gb ssd or the 500gb for $100 less and swap out the hard drives? I'm sure both of these have been addressed, but, this is a very long thread.

    TIA

You're like me. I am actually on a chat with a Lenovo rep to see if I can return the Y580. I had bought a macbook pro 15" which is still in it's return window and I have really fell in love with it. I tried to cancel my lenovo order but was unsuccessful. The reason I am telling you this is because I think the 1TB+32GBssd is more readily available. The 500 GB option has a ship date of 10/26/2012. Mine shipped within 2 days.

If I can't get a full refund (which I know is super unlikely) I am just going to keep the y580. it's my fault for rushing and ordering it when I knew what the policy was. I really hope they can help me out. I just like the apple too much.

So yeah, the rep said he setup a full refund and they even gave me a free return shipping label. I didn't even put up a fight. Why have I been reading horror stories all over the net that Lenovo is inflexible in its return policy? Now I have a dilemma! I was having a hard time making the decision between the Lenovo and the Apple and I thought the return policy was going to force my hand (I cannot afford to pay the restocking fee). Now, I have to make a choice! UGH.

Do I stick with Windows, which I know (but is headed in a very poor direction with Windows 8 in my opinion) or do I move onto Mac which I really really like (and can use windows 7 side by side with)... What to do, what to do.

The Macbook Pro I have does not have the specs of the Lenovo. No SSD, no blu-ray drive, only a 768 gig drive. The screen is lower resolution, but it also doesn't seem as disproportionately wide. That said though, I only do personal photo and video editing. Do I really need a Mac? Why am I so damn drawn to their tech?

This freaking choice is going to be the death of me. Head says Lenovo, heart says Mac. I hate it when choices are this tough.

I am not an AAPL hater, but their computers seem to be a bit overpriced for the hardware they contain. You could always run OSX on your Lenovo.

    Now me:

    u2442n or y580

if y580, then NU or PU?

Well there is no RAMBO anywhere in the official specs but the 209945U is clearly a burner from the tech sheet and from the link - http://www.lenovo.com/psref/pdf/ipbook.pdf

But what is confusing me is that there is no mention of the 20994PU model anywhere, that is annoying.
Anyway my mind is made up - it is going to be the 209945U, no point spending too much energy on the 100 MHz :D

    Thanks for all the help.

If you don't mind waiting up to a few weeks I would probably go with the PU.

    I bought the NU

    On the lenovo US site
    IdeaPad Y580 15.6" Laptop | Shop | Lenovo | (US)

there are 2 models 20994PU and 209945U going for $999

however, it seems like the PU model has better specs (in terms of the processor), any idea what the difference is between those 2 models?

That's really it. The processor speed on the PU is 2.4ghz vs 2.3ghz on the 5U.

$100 Price difference. You're only giving up the 1 TB slow hard drive and 32GB mSATA.

For me, I don't feel like adding to it when I get it so saving the $100 wasn't worth it.

Well thats the confusion. The 45U model clearly has a blu-ray burner in it while the PU is not clear - nowhere does it mention what its blu-ray config is. Thats what I have been asking around here.

It's not a blu-ray burner from what I understand. It is a DVD burner/blu-ray player combo and it is also my understanding that the dvd/blu-ray combo drive is the exact same thing - a DVD RW/blu-ray player.

Mine will be here today. I will confirm this for you. I got the NU which specifies DVD/Blu-Ray combo (no mention of RW) but I still think you can burn DVDs with it. I think it is just two ways of saying the same thing.

Please refer to the links I gave and these too : http://www.lenovo.com/shop/americas/content/pdf/system_data/y580_tech_specs.pdf

    http://www.lenovo.com/psref/pdf/ipbook.pdf

All of these clearly call the 45U a burner. I dont think there is any doubt that this is a burner (it is most likely a panasonic UJ260 which is Bluray burner)

What is unclear is what the PU has? My question for this at the lenovo forums too earned no concrete response on the PU

Well, that's the tech spec sheet from June when these were first announced - so it's little help now. However, based on that - my educated guess would be that ANY of their configurations that has blu-ray on it IS a bluray AND DVD burner.

Again, I will receive mine today and will do my best to confirm for you.

Is the ipbook old too? Makes sense given that the PU is not even featured. But you would think that people at the lenovo forums would know but nothing there too (link for my thread there is Need an urgent clarification - Lenovo Community).

Anyway if and when you confirm would be swell as I intend to go for the 45U model (as of now my justification is that the blu-ray burner is well worth the 100 MHz proc speed!!!)

I missed the IP book you posted originally. That is from September, but the page about web only machines (page 65 of the ip book pdf) is the EXACT SAME as the one from June - so it's not really updated. It sounds to me like Lenovo is in the midst of new product launches and their focus is on that.

Again though, based on the fact that there seems to only be two options - a DVD burner or a Bluray burner, I think it is safe to bet that the PU will also have a bluray burner since it says it is the combo drive.

I looked at this review (excellent review BTW) and if you look at the video closely when she is reviewing the optical bay I think it looks like it is a burner. The model she is reviewing is the exact same as mine except for the processor (3610QM vs mine which has the 3630QM).

If it does indeed have a bluray burner though, that will be a hugely pleasant surprise to me!

    Review link?
I thought you were going to buy the 45U too which is the 3610 and not the 3630 but you seem to state otherwise.
My theory is that given that both are slotted at 999, the difference between them is the proc vs blu-ray burner thing. Otherwise if both are blu-ray burners then the presence of the 45U makes no sense, we might as well all go for the PU which is the 3630 at 2.4GHz. I know its a little weak but I cannot seem to justify this in my head any other way :D
Heres to hoping that you indeed are pleasantly surprised. I hope someone also gets the PU and confirms all this, it is quite frustrating

I bought the NU which is $1099 and has the 32GB SATA drive.

I think that in the case of the 5U Vs PU, they are both exactly the same except for the processor. I believe the 3610QM is on its way out and Lenovo is clearing out its inventory. That's just my best guess though.

I think you should DEFINITELY go with the PU between the two of them. Just based on what I know though.

Have you tried to chat with sales?

I live in India, so chatting with them is not an option. That is why I posted on the lenovo community but that yielded zilch.

I wish someone could tell me if the PU has a burner or not. It would make my life much easier. What can I do about this? :(

Hey guys, I'm officially going to be part of the Lenovo Y580 family as I have ordered my 43U model on the 2nd of October. However I had a few questions regarding that. Though I placed my order and it cleared on the same day, the projected ship date states that it will be shipped on the 23rd of October; is there any way to possibly speed up the process? It is currently in the "Released to Manufacturing" stage, if I cannot do anything to hurry this along, how long does this stage usually last? My current laptop is physically falling apart (to be expected of a 2yr. old HP model.) In any case, if anyone has recently purchased a 43U model and has any insight, it would be much appreciated!

On a side note, I absolutely CANNOT wait to play GW2 :D

EDIT: Also, to note, the 43U model does not have a blu-ray, nor an additional SSD. It's the 1TB, 1366x768 model.

    Hey Guys!

I'm happy to join proud owners of the Y580. I have this one for almost a week now and must say that I am really impressed.

To be honest, I guess that it wouldn't be to hard to impress me since this is my first gaming laptop (previously I had only HP Probook 4520s). The reason why I bought the Y580 was actually just to play Battlefield 3 and it's doing a great job I must say (don't quite know the precise FPS but on full details and HD resolution - as I don't have the FHD version - it's simply smooth.

Tomorrow I will upgrade with mSata SSD and additional 8 GB RAM and re-install system. Hopefully everything will go smoothly and I will get rid of the terribly slow booting (average 50-90 secs according to Lenovo Boot optimizer). Once this is done, I will do some random tests on the FPS (know it was already covered by notebookcheck.net review, but the more the merrier, right?), temperatures and the boot time with mSata SSD. Also if anyone will be interested in my review of the WiDi - I'm getting the Belkin Screencast tomorrow so will be able to put some lines on it as well.

As for now I don't have any problems with mentioned overheating GPU, CPU or HDD or any other unpleasant temperatures on keyboard and laptop case. (even when playing BF3 for a few hours).

    Anyway, more lines later.
    Cheers!

Yep, I just updated from the stock driver my y580 came with. My Windows Experience rating for "gaming graphics" and "graphics" went up from 7.1 to 7.2, for what that's worth.

However, I don't think I'll notice anything in my games because they all already run so well!

If you believe Beth, whom I just chatted with on Lenovo's site, ALL y580s either come with a DVD/RW OR a DVD/RW and Bluray player combo. NONE of the Lenovo sold y580s come with a bluray burner

    So there you have it!

My y580 is sitting at home waiting for me. UPS delivered it at 12:37 local time here in Philly. I won't get home until 7 to play around with it though!

I think I've decided to keep it over the Macbook Pro.

@voozers, I've tried everything, uninstal/install synaptics/cypress, tried only with windows drivers... But it's strange because when I was home I didn't noticed this strange behavior, now when I came to college this problem appeared. I'll try to uninstall mcafee, which antivirus you suggest?

With one-touch restore, does that restore your PC as it came from the factory or does it just reinstall windows and avoid the bloatware?

In your country Y580 is only in two versions? Here we have about five versions with 8-digit designation.

    What do you say now?
I am buying the 45U for sure now :)

Hmmm I also just updated to the new drivers. My rating for gamin graphics was 6.8 before the update and now after the update they are still 6.8. How come we have diffrent ratings for the same laptop? And ideas?

Update: After re-running the evaluation thingy it changed to 7.2 as well.
I also feel it would be kind of cool if we used 3DMark or some program and compare results a little. Just to see how much +/- some units get and the difference between the 3630 and 3612.
I know there are benchmarks out there for the Y580 but none are with new drivers most are with stock.

I got mine from online, but there's plenty of different models, 45U and 43U seem to the most popular at this time so just thought I'd clear it up. They have several differences which could affect building time I suppose.

If the price is the same, why wouldn't you just go with the slightly faster processor?

I think what she meant and you might have misinterpreted, was that it has a DVD Burner/but a bluray player. She was just talking about the bluray aspect of the ODD.

I know for a FACT that mine has a DVD burner, even though the site says DVD/Bluray combo.

I just finished running 3DMark11 but I noticed that the RAM speed was set to 800 and not the 1600 it is capable of. How can you change it and set it to 1600? I tried the bios but I cant find that option. Does anybody know? Also check your laptops and also set it to 1600 if its at the defult 800.

UPDATE: Ok I just realised that CPU shows it as DRAM 800 meaning that the clock speed is actually set to 1600 so everything is fine :p

    Billy,
Where do you see the scope for misinterpretation? I clearly asked "Ok, on the other hand the 45U is a burner right?" to which she responded "correct".

And she clearly recommended going with the 45U which in the context refers to the presence of a burner.

I am going with the 45U under the rationale that a burner is more valuable than the 100 MHz speed difference (she clearly states that the PU is not a burner).
I guess with such conflicting messages we are all left none the wiser. With my fingers crossed I am hoping that the 45U does indeed have a burner.

Also see this Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 GTX 660M FullHD, he answers my questions with the model of the panasonic burner itself.

I dont know how to make sense of all this but I dont wish to grapple anymore with all this information :)

    Peace.

[edit] : Are you referring to the misinterpretation that her information may point to the fact that the PU can only read discs (DVD or blu-ray) whereas the 45U can read discs plus in addition burn DVD? In that case crossing fingers would be of no avail.
Isnt there any owner of these models who can clear this up for us here?
