I have a lenovo y580 too since end of august and it's great but I have two problems,

    1. when running WoW I get constant driver crashes and it is unplayable. Lot of people have driver problems with WoW and it seems to be linked to dx11 and overclocked cards. I read somewhere that the gtx 660m could also be an overclocked gt650m. Could this be the case? MSI Afterburner says it's a GK107 card. Also when playing Portal 2 I randomly get frozen and it will stay like that until I press ctrl, alt, del to go to task manager than just maximize back the game. This happens every X minutes and sometimes completely freezes my system. Checked MSI afterburner and it seems like it happens because for a split second my laptop switches back to intel hd 4000 (unless this is a result of me going to task manager). On the other hand in windows everything is fine and when playing Dead Space 2 I had no problems at all so I can't decide if this is a hardware or software problem.

    2. My keyboard backlit doesn't work. Fn+space does nothing. All other function + button combinations work. I tried to remove the keyboard because I was suggested that the ribbon cable might not have been connected in the factory. I didn't manage to because my technique is bad I think. There is no damn video on the internet about and the guide doesn't say anything about keyboard removal? Can anyone explain the method to do so? I know I have to unscrew 2 screws at the bottom as a first step.

    Thanks

Under the battery tab it says:

    Designed Capacity: 7236 mWh
    Full Charge Capacity: 7223 mWh

I tried setting max cpu to 5% as well as turning off wireless adapter, hdd, etc. and it still says 2 hour 21 min battery life. It just dropped 5 percent in about 5 minutes.

    Greetings all,

I had my wisdom teeth extraction yesterday so it was a good a time as any to tackle this beast of a thread and get some pointers.
Your continued supplied knowledge and advice has been absolutely invaluable in troubleshooting what could go wrong.
I purchased the Y580 on Wednesday and its currently set to ship on Monday if all goes well.
    (2099-45U - CPU: i7-3610QM, RAM: 4GBx2, Display: 15.6" FHD, GPU: GTX 660M 2G, HD: 500G 7200, OD: BD burner, PCIe: Intel 2200, USB: x3 3.0 / x1 2.0, OS: Win 7 Home)

With everything I learned thus far my plan for post-ship is as follows:

    I. Take a day or two to become familiar with the factory state of the laptop.
II. Checkup for any possible battery, power supply, temperature, LCD, speaker and keyboard/touchpad issues.
III. Setup my orders for the Crucial m4 256GB mSATA SSD, m2x3 Screw and the Cooler Master NotePal X-Slim which have been verified to be solid purchases for this laptop.

Up to this point everything makes sense. The tricky part for me comes with the full installation of the msata SSD drive.
I should note that I have no prior laptop experience. My hardware savvy for hardware installation currently is just a GPU I installed on my PC tower a while back.
That said, the actual installation of the msata drive itself as far as I've seen, is pretty easy. It's the whole using it as a primary drive which still has me somewhat puzzled.
Mainly because my Y580 does not come with the msata SSD of the other models, though the thread seems to mostly state this shouldn't be an issue.
I haven't been able to clarify if the SSD would run as normal or would suffer from performance because of the lack of tools provided to those that did purchase the combo.
I'm still confused about what hybrid drive means and if it requires a purchase a special hard drive with this function to run msata SSDs alongside it.

The way I plan to go about installing this drive right now is:
    A. Remove 500GB HD temporarily.
    B. Install mSATA drive
    C. Pop in OS disc and install on the mSATA drive
    D. Put 500GB HD back in

This process itself is a little frightening to me as I've heard reports of missing drives and having to poke the bios to get it working right.
The other part that still isn't clear to me is what happens with the OS installed in the original drive now that I have installed a clean version in the mSATA drive.
Do I wipe the drive itself while installing Windows to avoid issues? Does it already come setup with a separate support partitioned drive with the OKR stuff?
The drivers for the most part are clear with the support threads linked in prior posts.
But its that bit with the OS and non-hybrid SSD combos that is unclear to me.

My final inquiry is in regards to Windows 8 with the currently that nice $15 upgrade.
On page 202 it was suggested to hold off because drivers aren't fully compatible yet.
However, there are some y580 models already listed with the W8 upgrade in place.
Wouldn't it be possible to use the drivers from those models to make it work?

Thanks in advance for any guidance you folks can give me. :hi2:

no wonder. You didn't even use your battery.

you are relying on Windows battery estimate, which is not accurate if you have 95% battery juice left.

You need to actually use the battery until it has 10% left to see how much actual battery life you get.

If you're just surfing the web, you'll get much longer than 2.5 hours.

yes, installing msata is easier than installing a graphics card in a tower.

hybrid drive does not require any special hardware. It is software based. Install any msata ssd, and use lenovo Rapiddrive software installer to create a software cache.

Introduction to reinstalling Windows on the machines built with Rapid Drive

If you ever need to recover your OS, rapiddrive might make things a little tricky, so I don't recommend using rapiddrive, especially since you are using a big 256gb ssd.

keeping the ssd separate from the hdd will make your future recoveries painless.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/ide...hanging-partition-size-y580-maybe-others.html
shows you how to install OS to ssd, and create & store recovery image on the hdd.

bottom line is, it's almost impossible to break the hardware with software errors. Worst case scenario, you wipe everything and use the OKR setup disc to start over, and windows iso to clean install. Everything you need to create a clean system is on the web.

    Hi All,

This is my 1st post on this forum. On 8th November I order Ideapad 209945U model from Lenovo site. It cost me around $ 889 with out tax.

When I placed the order the shipping date was 11th November. When today I check the status of order, the shipping date displayed there as 14th of December. It was a shock for me. How can company cheat like that. When they are getting order it was something else, once order placed its 1 month delay.

Will it really take 1 month to assemble a laptop.

When I contact there call center today, the person on other end asked me to cancel the order instead of addressing and explaining the issue.

    Too much arrogance.

Can some one have idea is it really going to take this much time. What should I do.

Thank you for the guide, very clear and informative. Scouting around a bit more I noticed there is really no reason to remove the old primary hard drive provided I format the OS partition of it and keep the recovery partition. So that just means I only have to install the msata and go from there, which makes this whole process even easier. I just have to make sure to enable AHCI and set the SSD to primary drive right?

Also, I found a handy thread in the official lenovo forums regarding the Windows 8 drivers which pretty much cleared my earlier fears away.

Consider yourself lucky! I placed my order on the 7th of November and its been pushed back to December 17th. I'm traveling out of state by the end of the month, so this does not bode well at all. I'm going to call them up tomorrow and try and figure out what's going on with my order. For anyone suffering similar order woes; their support line number is 1(866) 428-4465 available from 9am-9pm EST.

I more point here is that the model 209945U which I and perhaps you also ordered is no more available on their website. Had Lenovo discontinued this model? That could be the reason for delay.

ON their customer care they have standard reply that parts are not available. It's like we are asking them to put windows on mac machine :).

    Hi;

How many primary partitions does Onekey recovery require? I'm asking 'cause my future plan is to get an mSATA and clean install W7 in it plus a Linux distro, and use the HDD as storage for both OS. I think OKR requires one for the boot, one for the OS and one for the hidden partition for the recovery. Am I right? Are all these primary? That left me with only one primary for the Linux distro.

    Thanks in advance.

Well I gave them a call a few moments ago and had a nice consultant answer some of my questions.

Regarding the delay, best estimate she could give me is similar to what we guessed; that there was currently an overflow of orders and they were getting parts ordered in to meet demand. The rep mention that despite the current estimated shipment dates, the current laptops on order could be shipped much sooner as they become available. She put my order on priority shipping (not sure if I heard correctly) and stated she would personally make sure it was taken up by the right parties and get it shipped sooner. Crossing my fingers that it all works out.

Hello all, my Y580 is scheduled to come in this Friday. I can't wait. I ordered this thing on the 23rd of October, and almost cancelled it to get something else quicker. Anyways, how is the bloatware on the laptop out of the box? I ordered the Win7 and 500gb 7200rpm model with no mSATA. I am planning on adding an mSATA maybe when there is a black friday deal or something, but until then I want to know if I should do a clean install.

Congrats for getting a positive update on your end! :)
Still no update on my end yet, but I'll check again later today. Where are you ordering from by the way?
I'm currently located in New York so I figured there would be less issues with shipping.
Though given they're being sent in from China I guess it doesn't matter either way.

Well I spoke to order support and they echoed that this particular model is under huge constraint right now and that its not likely that my order ship date will be changed anytime soon. That my priority shipping request was sent out and to check my status again the following night for any possible changes.

Out of sheer curiosity I checked once again after work and lo and behold I've been updated to the coveted 11/15 shipment date. Squee!! :D

Glad to see you guys seem to be having some luck. I'm having the same issue. Actually, it's a bit more annoying since it's been a few days and my order number still isn't working when I try to check the order status online. I had to call them to find out the shipment date is supposedly a little over a month. I also never got a confirmation email from them for my order. All in all, a pretty disconcerting experience with Lenovo so far. Guess I'll try calling them again in the next couple days (since that's the only way I can currently check the status anyway).

Guys, can you tell, in which situation turboboost will go off on out cpu? Mine is i7 with 2300mhz.

I'm testing it with lix 0.6.4 and first runs are 70 gflops but then it goes down. There is some termal barrier on which it goes off?

according to the bios, it's 85C. Last I checked, the bios mod allows you to raise the thermal barrier. Not sure if it actually works though, but the setting can be changed.

intel also has its own thermal failsafe where it throttles even further if too hot.

Just a heads up to those that ordered Win7 laptops. When doing windows update, make sure you select and install KB2647753 first before installing any other updates. This will make sure you do not get the 'error configuring updates' at the boot screen.

    I had some trouble...

As I'm in Japan, I decided to simply nuke the Win7 install and go afresh with Win 8.

    Big mistake...

I ended up having to physically rip out the SSD drive, format the HD (OEM partition at the end is intact however) and install clean. Twice...

As there was no Windows on the thing before install, it was not an 'update' and activation threw a hissy fit. Re-install and it said "No Problem!" and worked, but it was annoying...

(I wonder how that works? Is that a 'cheap standalone Win8 exploit' in the making? Would it work on something without Windows at all?)

After googling for drivers, everything is now working well. The only thing that's not working at all is one-key restore (Lenovo dragging their feet I suppose) and I've got a printer driver problem with my HP laser. At startup the bios options are not visible, and may not be working. I've not tried the F2/F10 for bios/boot at startup since the install, but the options are present on a re-start.

After everything was working again, slipped the SSD again and configured it with intel drivers. Working as well as it's supposed to I suppose.

Perhaps it's not as seamless as it was with the factory install, I don't know. I do know there's no bloatware on it and I expect one-key will be working again at some point in the future.

What was more troublesome was working out how to make metro go away and 'start' to come back so I could use the thing. Took a while to work out how to get the desktop...

    Hope that helps.

Lenovo does use a different date compared to what is shown on the website, at least in my experience they did. The waiting and shipping experience, in my opinion, needs some serious work. Everyone has issues and I was no exception.

I just ordered my laptop last month on the 18th and it was supposed to ship out on October 30th. It then went to October 26th and then to November 15th (I was pissed!). It's like a roller coaster they play. The date finally changed back to October 26th but the guy who helped me originally order my laptop told me it was marked for shipping on the 27th but not in the UPS system yet. The morning of the 30th UPS still had no information, so I called Lenovo and within hours it had been updated by UPS and was being shipped from Shanghai. Once it left Shanghai, it went to Anchorage, then to Kentucky and finally to Houston, about a 3 day trip I believe...so it's a process from start to finish, but once you get the laptop I'm sure you'll be pleased.

I've been extremely happy with my Y580 and the only thing negative I can say about it is the smudge prints drive me crazy, so technically there is nothing I dislike about it at this point.

Hope you'll get your laptop soon!

It was a lot of hassle, but I think that if I'd settled into Win7 on it first and had a need to save data on the thing, it might have been a lot easier.

As it was, I got it with the intention to immediately switch to Win8 (because language switches are easy. Win7 doesn't allow them at all) and just deal with it and get it running ASAP.

Never any fear of it not working at all, so perhaps I was more reckless than needed and I paid for it in time and stress.

And the list of drivers you've linked to there are where I got mine from for the most part.

Any problems I have now are because Win8 is 3 weeks old, nothing more. A little more maturity in the OS and a few more tweaks and it'll be fine.

Your call in the end though. ;)

Wow, I've never experienced worse customer service. My ship date was changed again after I was assured by the representative that the date he gave me would be the very latest it would ship (I specifically asked him this). Now they're telling me not until next year some time! So not only are the wait times horrendous, I'm also being directly lied to. Not to mention their website lists the exact same model with an estimated ship date of 11/24; if it's true they have inventory problems with that model and they know this why would they continue to deceive people about it?

I'm seriously considering just canceling the order; if Lenovo's warranty support is even half as bad as their customer service when ordering from them it's just not worth it.

I don't know. Because I need this thing to do actual paying work, I wound back the interface to as close to Win7/Vista as possible so I could find my way around and get work done.

I'll admit, I'm not a fan of metro at all, especially not on a large/lots pixels screen. The native apps tend to lock you into that and only that, and the only way out/back is to go back to start/metro. I would think that a swipe might be able to do the 'back' in it, but I use a mouse/keyboard (remember, working!) so there are no swipes available.

I can say that pinch zoom works in metro well enough, as does up-down and side to side 2 finger swipes to scroll.

Really, I hope that Microsoft don't cling to metro when Win8 is on an actual 'computer' with a keyboard/mouse/pad. At least make something appropriate for those input devices to be native in the OS. For a touchscreen 'device', I think it'll be great.

Just my thoughts, only had the thing for a week and Win8 on there for just as long so I have no base of reference for how the thing works with Win7.

Another thing, I do feel quite sorry for those waiting on having one of these things made up to order and the delivery time keeps blowing out. Mine has everything maxxed out, and I got it the day after I ordered it. Price was ¥78800, or just under US$1000. I wish it had crossed the magic ¥100000 mark, as then I can take a nice tax deduction on it...

I hope that helps someone out there, although I think it might simply poke at a raw nerve with some.

    Stu.

I think lenovo has some crazy logic with respect to dates.

now the dates on status page are displayed as shipping: 2012/12/26 delivery :2013/01/03

To delivery a laptop they are taking 2 months. Are they making some rocket or super computer.

    Hi guys.
Today sadly I was a lazy bastered and tried to untangle some cords by pulling them the lazy way. What happened is that my dest lamp fell on my laptop screen causing a scratch (well 2). I have been so angry with myself today because of that. What I am asking is is there any way to make the scratch(2) less visible? Or try to eliminate them as much as possible? The scratch doesnt feel deep. It just looks as if the screen is coated with something and it was chipped off. Here is also the picture 2012-11-20 14.54.52.jpg

EDIT: I read somewhere you can use an eraser and it worked. Now im not sure it just seems that it was paint from the lamp and not actually physically a scratch? Weird thing that water and wipe did not take care of it. But the eraser did. THANK GOD

I don't believe that you'll be able to fix/hide these scratches but I have heard that my friend is using some kind of a paste to hide scratches on smartphone screens. I'll ask him when he comes online

I've heard about that, but I've also heard many more stories of Lenovo pushing the shipping date back and back and back. I have no idea if I'll get it next month or 3 months from now (or at all!). I really don't understand why they haven't addressed this problem; I'm reading stories identical to this from people going back not only months, but years. It's crazy.

How about this. Cancel your current order and after confirmation of your cancellation, order a fresh one from the lenovo black friday deals. ;)

If I were to cancel I would buy a laptop from another company; I'm not sure how ordering another laptop from Lenovo would solve the problem. Actually, I'm realizing that may have been a joke; if so, sorry, it's hard to identify tone over the internet.

Well. Its worth a thought. Coz owing to the black friday deal you may get the same model for around 100$ cheaper.
