Uh, so I don't know if I should but it not. Damn it!!!!
This is a good laptop but I can't play all the high-end games on only 20-30 FPS![]()
Guess it would be a better idea to save money for an Alienware....

n So, I finally ordered my Y580 and It was a total of $1036.64 with the barns and noble discount and the black friday deal. I'm going to order the 128gb crucial m4. I know there are better deals on ssd but i do use one 1tb space I could fill it up in a month with "legally" downloaded stuff "if you know what I mean"
.
My question do any of you know how to get past the gtx660m overclock limit and how could I upgrade the lan card for a Killer or 6300-N?
THX -
Hey everyone I have been looking at multiple forums daily for the past 2 months on the Lenovo Y580, but still have questions which I hope can be answered on the thread.
To start out I started looking for a gaming PC when my Xbox finally gave up on me after 3 years of use. At first I looked towards a 1000usd gaming desktop since I already have a mouse and monitor (my 720p Samsung TV), but my sister persuaded me by saying a good laptop might be a better idea because the Acer 533 I have right now is only really good for note taking and web browsing. So after a few weeks of searching I came across the Y580 and found the specs to my liking. Also I will be upgrading ram to 16GB off the bat.
I plan on using the Y580 for:
Gaming:
3-5 hours per day (I plan to have the graphics on medium or high depending on the game) mostly from a 720p TV via HDMI cable
Desktop Replacement:
I have used a Dell B110 for the past 7 years and feel I need a replacement, but want something mobile for school for the days I need something a bit stronger whether it be an assignment or a project
Video Camera:
The 720P HD Webcam seems like it would be good for making videos.
Now there are a couple of things I would like to ask of Y580 users because with me I am hyped to get something but a week or two before I start contemplating every little detail to make sure its a good buy. Also when I say life of the laptop I mean the laptop as a whole, if its less then 100usd to fix something after a year or more of use then I wont mind too much, but I want to avoid needing to replace something after months of use or that will cost me an arm and leg to repair.
1. I plan on using the Y580 for at least 5 years before feeling a need to get a replacement. I havent found much info on how long the Y580 is expected to last, only observations.
2. Should I invest in a cooling pad? I hear that HDDs dont last as long when kept at cooler temps, but because I will be gaming for hours at a time which will cause the Y580 to heat up quite a bit I am wondering if a cooling pad might be a good idea and extend the life of the laptop.
3. How is the webcam? I plan on making videos of me talking about subjects, doing reviews of products (lighting isnt an issue for me) and so on. I am concerned about the lag as seen with webcams where the frame rate resembles a comic book.
4. I currently use a 720p 32in TV that I will connect the Y580 to via HDMI cable. I have been debating between the LCD and FHD screen for weeks now, but still cant decide. I dont mind the lower resolutions text size, how it looks while gaming and how much I can fit on screen, but what worries me the most is the RGB contrast. I know on the laptop monitor it doesnt look the best but on my LCD TV it will probably look a better? Correct me on that. The only con to the FHD screen I see is price and text size.
5. I found the Y580 on two websites. JR.com and Lenovo. JR.com will get me the Y580 with 2.30ghz, 750gb 7200rpm HDD, and 6GB of RAM for 900usd with a much faster shipping. Compared to from Lenovo that offers 2.40ghz, 1tb 5400rpm HDD (less heat?), and 8GB of RAM for 920usd with a much longer wait time. I am considering ordering from Lenovo due to the faster processor, and more memory, but what where I get stuck is either put in 20-30usd for a much longer wait, better specs, minus the slower HDD with lower temp or cheaper one with a faster HDD with higher temp, lower processor and unknown of how old the model being sent is. Why I dont get the higher res is because my budget is 1000usd which includes the laptop, shipping, tax and a RAM upgrade.
Thank you to anyone who is willing to read through all of this and help me. I am very critical about my buys especially when they are expensive and want to invest in something that will fit my needs and last me at least 5 years. Also later down the road I will put an SSD to replace the HDD probably a year or two after owning this laptop. I understand a 1000usd desktop would be the better choice, but I need it mobile. 15.6in and 6lbs doesnt bother me a bit. -
Yep, that's the only reason why I haven't sold my Desktop. It has 2x GTX 470's so I will able to max everything for another 2 years easily. Those Fermi cards are no joke.
On a side note, I only have 2 complaints with this laptop but they are glaring.
1. - The trackpad is so terribly terrible. Everytime I try to use the right click button it uses the left one as well. I tried looking in the trackpad software but couldn't solve it.
2. The sound isn't as great as it's supposed to be. What am I missing? The Realtek stuff is only for output and the Dolby settings for the Intel speakers make absolutely no difference. Is there some kind of windows software I can get to crank and tweak the default speakers more to get more bass and better levels? It has really only impressed me on one YouTube song because it's internal levels were set super high. Is there a better Intel driver?
EDIT - Damn this 660M is pretty weak stock. With a single GTX 470 I could max out SR3 with like 50-60fps but maxed I get like 15-20. I am going to try and overclock it with MSI afterburner but it won't let you unlock the voltage so I doubt I will get the clocks up very high. Has anyone had any luck with it? -
Yeah, I am not sure this is a good gaming laptop.
Trackpad, you can get used to it. I know I can. Maybe try update the software I know it worked on my old laptop.
Or simply you got a faulty trackpad.
About the GPU, it sucks that you have to overclock it to be able to actually play. if you do it is not worth it.
What about the CPU, is it good?
And I don't know if a mobile GPU, no matter which, could max out anything. Maybe dual GPUs and for that the best option is Alienware. -
Markus from Autria Notebook Enthusiast
Are you sure, that you use the GTX 660 M?
'Cause i've installed Black Ops2 one week ago and i had also problems with the frames, the performance was only good when i play on low resolution and the loading screen was shown to long.
Then i found the problem, what's going wrong.
I opened the Nvidia Control Panel and set the GTX als the default card.
Now i can play the game with all settings on and it runs nice anyway.

Hours after sifting through this thread has left me with a list of things people want to do to y580's. Mine won't be here for a few weeks. I was pre scouting. I have a list of topics thats answers should probably all be edited into the threads first post. I'm not pointing fingers but link626 could probably answer most of these off the top of his head and his bookmarks. I alas didn't think to save info on anything but possible upgrades for after I get mine. I think it would save everyone including visitors time by answering these questions and getting them into the first post. "search the forum" sucks when you don't know what your looking for and even when you do. Just telling someone to read the first post saves people from reading 200+ pages.

And my personal thought since the gpu seems to be the bottleneck of the system. If lenovo's thinkpad can use a gpu in the ODD spot with a case could the y580? Use two at once? Just one through it off thinkpad drivers to upgrade to gtx680m while at home on cooler pad? Just a thought...
This was posted on my cracked iPhone sorry for missing spelling and gramar issues. I need to re-crack it. Got buggy over time.
In case someone didn't get it me not pointing fingers was a joke. -
1. You have to right click nearer the corners. There is only 1 center click button under the trackpad that controls all clicks, in contrast to the separate buttons on older trackpads. You'll have to train your 1st and 3rd finger for clicking. Works well once you do that.
2. For a laptop, the speakers sound pretty good. The Dolby gimmick only applies to the built-in speakers.
If you have external speakers, then it behaves just like any other computer with realtek audio. There's nothing special about it. You can control treble/bass with the realtek software built-in equalizer.
You can't compare a DESKTOP 470 with a mobile 660m. the desktop gpu's are higher spec'd and use more watts than the whole laptop.
http://www.geforce.com/hardware/notebook-gpus/geforce-gtx-660m/specifications
http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-470/specifications
The 470 has double the memory bandwidth, and higher texture fill rate. Of course it's going to kick the 660m in the azz.
The desktop equivalent of the 660m is near-GT650, which is much lower than the GTX470.
If you want near-desktop power, you'll need to get the GTX680m and SLI configs in a $2000+ laptop.
gtx660m cannot be upgraded. it's soldered to the mobo, not a separate card.
Other than that, I'd say don't touch the y580.
There's nothing worth modding other than ssd's and perhaps thermal paste if you want to squeeze out another 4*C or some crap. 99% will do fine with factory thermal paste.
Even the bios doesn't have anything worth changing really. -

Are there any specific drivers i should install when i first get my y580?
Also what type of disks do i need to make a recovery disk? (never made any before lol) -
You're right, I was a bit too hasty. Even though the 470 is a few years old those fermi cards are straight beasts. Good news though. With MSI afterburner I able to overclock the main core clock by +135 (this is the max) and the memory clock by +350. I actually got +500 work without artifacts but it's not worth doing for normal use. I would would stay at +350 or even +250 and make sure to watch those temps.
My highest temp was 91C which isn't too bad but isn't good either. My 470's in my Desktop get as hot as 97C and they have been used for years so anywhere from 80-92C is fine as long as you don't game for 5+ hours a day.
With these overclocks I was able to play SR3 in DX9 mode maxed out with great framerates. I also maxed out Dead Space 2 and it ran smooth as silk. Dead Island also played very smooth maxed out. All these games were played in 1080p by the way.
I didn't buy this laptop for gaming but I am still impressed with it's performance overall. Just use MSI afterburner to OC and you are good to go. Also download RivaTuner and go into the tools folder to enable D3Doverrider. This program will make sure that triple buffering is forced on D3D games and increases performance when vsynch is enabled. The triple buffering option in the NVIDIA control panel only applies to OpenGL games.
*Does anyone know of any Blu-Ray software that actually works with the drive in here? I have a PowerDVD software disk that cam with my desktop Sony BD drive but it won't work on this drive and says it's not an opteron dirve. So I downloaded the trial version of Arcsoft and it wouldn't play the Avatar BluRay. I mean, it would play it but it would ultimately pause permantly until you changed the scene and then it would do it again. -
I just got the Lenovo Y580 and I was wondering, how can I find out if Windows was installed on the SSD? I read somewhere that it is automatically installed on the SSD. Can anyone confirm?
Thanks. -
Whats a good ssd i should buy for my y580? do i need to buy anything to make it fit in the laptop?

Normal mssd. Mssd= Msata ssd
Newegg.com - Crucial M4 CT256M4SSD3 mSATA 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
If you just want the performance use the 32 gb model for the operating system and programs. Store music and movies on you other hdd.
You will need two screws to install the mssd. Find at your local computer store.
Look up msata ssd on newegg.com if you have the 1t 5400rpm harddrive and want to add another ssd drive for fast boot/ better performance. If you want to replace the 1t hard-drive just use any 2.5 ssd standard sata hard drive. Msata will fit in your spare slot where 2.5 will have to replace your current hd. There is a differance from msata and a sata ssd. Search "y580 ssd install" on the forum to add your own ssd to increase performance. -
Laptop temps will normally be higher than desktop temps.
-
If you got the model with the ssd it is downloaded on it. The boot time will be 20ish seconds if it's on the sdd. More like one to two minutes on 5400rpm hd. Google y580 ssd boot time YouTube to get a comparison. Or look at the partitions. They're separate drives but from the factory they make one c: drive. -
I'm confused, I just got off a chat with Crucial and was informed me that my Y580 does not have a slot for a mSATA drive.... I thought they all did?
This guys got 2!!!

I am debating on this laptop still. I will be gamin for around 3-5 hours on medium to high settings and would invest in a cooling pad if it would extend the life. Is the heating issue after the amount of time I play going to make the laptop as a whole only survive 2-3 years or will I need to replace ram and or the hard drive due to heat?
-
Well I got a few questions. Just ordered a y580 FHD no SSD. Off the bat I'm interested in making this laptop work at its highest potential. Therefore my wish to do list is mainly upgrade to mSATA mSSD and then I would also like to reapply the thermal heat paste with some AS5 I have on hand. But I have warranty concerns. The way I see it, either I start with a stress test on gpu and cpu and then if it passes, I'll screw the warranty. But if a 3 year inhome and accidental coverage will still cover it, I figure it to be well worth the money. Anyone have experience with this?
Also, I noticed a person who ordered theirs a day later then mine now has an additional 20 days extra added to their estimated shipping date. Mine's still showing dec 2nd ship date. If they do that to me, what can I do? That seems intentionally negligent. Should I call and threaten to cancel my order? Should I just cancel it? Should I report them to the BBB or something? I think its ridiculous to order thanksgiving weekend, be told you'll ship out a week later and then have it pushed back over a month. Christmas for god's sake(if you believe in one, I don't.). I'm the one that usually tells me sister that she's a money grabbing, snobby little ***** that demands outrageous discounts for inconveniences, but I can't help to feel I would be a little screwed over if my ship date got pushed back past christmas and would feel a little better about it if they perhaps greased my palms a bit. -
Look like the guy tried to put a msata to his TV tuner slot but it didn't work....

Crucial is a decent company, but all they can know is what they can find on a spec sheet. I've read it to be true and fully expect with extremely high confidence that my y580 will have an msata slot. Same as like the "8GB ram max" myth. Thats what anybody from any company will say, 8GB max, but 16GB works with no errors in memtest. Just remember to get the screw to fasten the msata in.

so i just got my y580 just now, and i was wondering if its supposed to come with disks? cuz mine didnt come with any
so im wondering if i get an ssd how am i supposed to install windows 8 on it lol -
I haven't gotten mine yet but I'd expect them to expect you to burn your own copy. Look for a recovery disc creator in applications
M2x3mm screw I think is correct. Seems to be a fairly common mounting screw. They say steal one from your last laptop. Thats all I know. I have some screws left from a custom desktop build, gonna look and see if any of those are the right size.
Edit: Appears all mounting screws I got with my haf X tower are M3 screws. Guess I'll be stealing one from my old craptop. -
I don't have an old Laptop.... I'll steal one from the wife's Dell...
-
is there anyway to go back to factory settings without disks?
Also is there any program i can use that can install all the new drivers?
or is it best i update manually.
ohyea and lastly, what programs should i get to keep my laptop running properly? something like registry fixers or something or like that temperature viewer -
Anyone get the Y580 with Win 8 preinstalled? Was it 8 or 8 Pro?
-
im still wondering how im supposed to install windows 8 onto an ssd when i replace my hdd. my laptop didnt come with a disk or anything and everything was preinstalled onto the msata(ithink)
and i didnt get my activation key on my laptop lol -
BEHOLD! It is I, the creator (of this thread)
Just thought I would chime in after five months with my 580. Still running my clean install that was done out of the box. Rock solid with no issues whatsoever. Countless hours of gaming and have never had any problems.
It's only been five months, but I'm still extremely satisfied.
On a side note, I have no idea why people are even trying to install windows 8 on their 580s. What's the point? Maybe some time down the road, but just doesn't seem like a smart idea right now. -
Mine's coming preinstalled win 8. Will be downgrading most likely. Hate hate hate tiles. Gonna give it a shot anyway.
-
you can just get start8 or something and never have to see that start menu for windows 8 lol
-
Really? From recent threads I have been seeing a number of people have issues (from the lenovo forums) have issues with crashes and issues from the 660m, heating (70s-90s I think) and things that have made me consider the MSI GE60 or Sager 6560 (I think) instead.
-
I have a question about temps, what programs do you guys use to see temps for hdd, gpu, and cpu
also what are critical temperatures?(bad temps) and also what are the average temps -
My experience mirrors that of Syed117's. Crashes and issues are likely from faulty Nvidia drivers, which isn't Lenovo's fault. I haven't had any issues with my stock Nvidia drivers (well, those that were on the backup partition). As for temps, the highest I seen my CPU go was up to 86C during an extended gaming session and I live in a pretty warm environment (gets up to 100+ F during the summer). If people are getting temps of 70C while doing something CPU or GPU intensive (or both), then the system is quite cool indeed. HDD temps are on the high end for sure, but there are ways to mitigate that issue.

Hey guys. I have the 500gb 7200rpm HD in my y580. I want to replace my HD with an SSD, and also put in an msata into the other bay. Is this possible? If so, would I be able to clone my HD to the msata and set it as boot and have the other SSD as a kick around drive? Could someone link me to guides on how this can be done? Any help is greatly appreciated.
-
Yup, no issues for me.
I've been using the stock drivers that came with my 580. Every game I've thrown at it has run perfectly. It's always hooked up through hdmi to my plasma and its been perfect. Feel absolutely no reason to try other drivers until I see people saying that they are significantly better. That hasn't happened yet.
Obviously I run windows update to keep everything up to date, but my video drivers haven't been changed.
Anti-virus, ccleaner, Gary utilities. Those three programs keep my system running like new to this day. Couldn't be happier. -
So if I dont update the drivers, but keep everything else up to date the Laptop will last 4-5 years? Also what would I do about heat? i a looking at the Sager 6165 and MSI GE60 as options also.
-
Well, don't fix what ain't broken when it comes to driver updates, unless there is a compelling reason to do so.
If you are into gaming, maybe you should look into the upcoming Y500, which gives you the possibility of dual GT 650s in SLI. It also comes in FHD and it seems that there are more vents (I posted pics in the Y500 thread). Also it seems that Lenovo finally moved the HDD in a more reasonable location instead of lying between the GPU and CPU as seen in the Y580. The Y500 appears to be a lot more accessible than the Y580 in case you want to clean your fan, etc. -
I dont think I would need dual grpahics cards I am loking for somthing that can play games at 35-45+ FPS for games like borderlands, skyrim and the upcoming FarCry 3 at medium (maybe high) settings.
The Sager 6165 with the 650m graphics card fit the bill well, but I have yet to find things on build quality and heating issues. The price is great, but I dont want something that will die on me.
The MSI GE60 looks good as well and from what I read its good on heat compared to the Y580, but I am concerned about how long it will last and the price as well. My budget is 1000usd or less.
My real concerns with the Y580 are the drivers messing up that render the laptop not usable for gaming and not being able to play 3-5 hours long at medium - high settings because of the heat (would a cooling pad make this possible?).
So thats why i am torn between the Sager, MSI and Y580. I want something I can game at 35fps minimum for games like skyrim and borderlands 2, even metro 2033, but still want it to last 4-5 years as a general machine, I dont mind if the graphics card cant play games at medium 2-3 years from now. -
Guys, anyone playing farcry 3 on y580? What's your settings, cause on ultra it laaaags.
-
Wow wow, guys, there is a problem with video driver update on y580 or what? I thought you can install any driver you want. Or this will make games crash?
-
That is a concern of mine two fellow Russian, I hear that the driver updates can cause issues.
-
How come i cant update windows 8 on my y580, it keeps saying it failed and it ends up reverting. how do i fix this?
