Hey,
@ all Win8 Users, could you upload the drivers for Rapiddrive ?? (don´t know how long Lenovo will need for it) -.-
Even Far Cry 3 works perfectly ( @ 1600x900 )
-
i feel the video quality of my laptop is not as expected. I can see two 3 layers of ghost shades around the characters in the video. The default video card is integrated. I tried making NVIDIA one as default but its freezed.
Any suggestions? -
hi guys
can someone comment on the quality of hinge on y580?
i have a pretty good idea of the general build quality because i've had y570 and y470 as well as recently-returned y480.
i had to return y480 because the hinge felt too light and weak... i was darn sure it would give in in less than 6 months of use.
just wanted to know if the hinge on y580 is any better or sturdier.
thanks -
tighter doesn't necessarily mean better.
a hinge that is too stiff can break open the plastic chassis. As long as the screen can stay at any position you put it, it's tight enough. -
Do Y580 (59353258) and (59353260) have 1080p ???
-
i agree. but thinkpad hinges, for example are a lot tighter than any of the Y series i have used so far. and thinkpad hinges do seem to hold better.
do you own y580? could you comment on the quality of the hinge? is it on the lighter side? -
I've got the Y580 with the i5 and the 750gb HDD. I bought a mSATA 128 SSD. Installed windows 8 on the SSD and everything is working just fine! The only problem is I can't enter my BIOS or the Boot menu. I see the Lenovo screen when booting up, but it doesn't say press F2 or F12 anymore. Pressing F2/F12 doesn't do anything. Did anybody experienced the same problem or knows how to fix it?
-
How about touchpad geastures when using windows 8? Are they good or not? Usable?
-
it's neither tight nor loose. Don't worry, the screen won't fall backwards by itself.
However, it is screwed directly into the plastic base, so you don't want it too tight.
The build design of the Y series is like a gussied up G series.
The thinkpad hinges can afford to be tighter because they are screwed to the magnesium rollcage inside. They will not rip open the laptop if you open and close it 1000x -
does nobody else feel that the video quality is below expectations?
dark appears darker. I was playing battlefield 3, and if the room has a little bit of darkness, it multiplies to a large extent.if its a bit more dark, i cant see anything
ditto for videos and movies. -
Whats your screen resolution and how about your viewing angle. Are you playing off the laptop screen? I have noticed this with even my Cheap Acer AO533. If you dont view it correctly things might be brighter or darker. Same with the right viewing angle.
-
I never expected my Windows 8 y580 to not have an option to burn recovery discs. In Windows 8 pre-installed lenovo laptops, OKR has no option for it like win 7 laptops had. This is bull****. Just ran out to get a large usb stick for using windows 8's create recovery usb function to see if that will work and my usb drive is defective.

did anyone have Problems with CUDA ??
My Nvidia GTX 660m don´t underclock in Win8..
after 10min Desktop
GPU : 835
MEMORY : 1235
(See it on MSI Afterburner)
If i open my Webbrowser (Google Chrome), the GPU and MEM Clock jumps between
835/71235 and 400/200 ...
Drivers are Nvidia 370.10 (testest with 369.xx) Same Problem
If i close my Webbrowser the Clocks Jumps up to 835/1235.. -
Hi all, can someone help me with this problem, please?
I just received my new Y580 about a week ago. I use HWMonitor to check the internal temp. The highest temp ever record is 81 c for the CPU (when gaming). Which I think is pretty high, consider that I have the laptop elevated about 3 inches off the table and my room is pretty cold (it's winter here). So I checked to see if the bottom 3 vents are working properly. I figure that the bottom vents draws air in to cool the inside. So if I use a small piece of paper, it should stick to the vent because it's sucking air in. The piece of paper only stick to the top vent (the one near the exhaust vent on the side of the laptop), but not the bottom 2. Also, the top vent feels kind of cool to the touch after prolong use, which make sense because it's sucking air in. However, the lower 2 vents don't feel the same and actually feel kind of warm. This lead me to believe the 2 lower vents are not working properly.
.. -
I posted this question on another forum, this is what someone replied:
"your Y580 seems to do fine...
minimum CPU temp at idle should be around 45 degree C, maximum temp at continuous full load can go up to over 90 C, depending on ambient temperature.
The bottom vent near the exhaust is located just below the fan and naturally the most cooling air gets sucked in from there, whereas the other vents just let outside air get to various component inside the laptop without forced airflow."
Does that means only one of the vents draws air in, while the other two don't really do anything? So what is the point of having 3 vents? -
go back to older drivers and see if it happens.
don't use other gpu monitoring software.
use gpu-z. it should show it downclocking to 135mhz. -
This happened to me under Win7 too. I think until an application doesn't use the nVidia card underclock doesn't work. I tried it with different drivers and tested with GPU-Z. My final solution is: under nVidia Conrol Panel I set up Lenovo Energy Management to use the nVidia card. This initializes the nVidia card after boot and underclocking works perfectly.

My Y580 came with Win 8 installed, and the touchpad gestures are great (I haven't used Win 8 with a touchscreen, so can't compare). The only slightly annoying feature is the slide from right which is often activated unintentionally. Synaptics customization is very nice and provides plenty of options.
Didn't think I would like Win 8, but I do. The faster start/shutdown is great and the metro/desktop doesn't really bother me like I thought it might. Also nice to get all the OS improvements/fixes/etc.
I'm returning this Y580 (Win 8, 1 TB HDD + 16 GB SSD + DVD/RW) for a Y580 with Win 7 HP (will fresh install W7 Pro or W8 Pro--thoughts/comments/advice welcome), 750 GB HDD + 32 GB SSD (plan to install Windows on SSD--will probably be very tight; waiting for 256 GB mSATA price drop) + BD/DVD.
Will save the drivers from current Win 8 Y580 and may save the 20GB OKR/Lenovo recovery partition too. -
Sorry to bother you all, guys, i'm sure it was already discussed, but is there a one-place-guide how in install clean windows 8 on y580? so all the things will be workings (especially onekey theatre)
-
Can we discuss where to find an iso of windows 8 OEM that will allow me to reinstall my preloaded windows 8? I need to install to an mSATA and its apparant to me right now they don't provide any function compatible with that goal. No recovery disc creator in OKR 8 and the windows recovery drive creator creates a usb that I have not been able to recover to msata. So I would normally download an iso from demonoid but thats still down for now. Not sure where is a good place to go now for torrents.
Also to the previous post. I'm working on the clean install myself as you can see but onekey theatre is simply a driver download. Here is a lenovo forum topic about it and also you can get the drivers straight off of support.

I'm so sick of this. My laptop turns off every time I close the lid overnight. In the morning, I always see it turned off and on the 'Windows didn't turn off properly' screen.
-
hi all
how can i remove laptop's keyboard? i think the upper left corner of the keyboard is not firm enough... i want to check why this problem happened....
thx -
I hope you know that in Power Options, you can change advanced settings. There you can set what action you want to perform when the lid is closed.
Also check whats the Critical Battery Level/Action. If its set too low, may be the computer isnt getting enough time to shut down. -
1) Screen resolution is the highest. And I am sure viewing angle is not the problem. Its kind of a drawback of this model I guess. Coz I have kept y580 and hp dv7 (1600 X 900) side by side and compared. The dark scenes when viewed in y580 appear much darker.
2) Once I was watching video/movies for about 2-3 hrs. Suddenly for a micro second the screen got black, like a blink. Then I found that my dedicated graphics card is no where to be detected on my laptop. I was scared. But like most of the laptop problems, a restart fixed it. But today again the same thing happened. Is this some kind of power management tactics or a fault?
3) Even during normal day to today tasks(movies, surfing, wifi), this laptop's hdd temp hovers around 50-51 C. Is this normal? My hpdv7 never crossed 44-45. -
are those drivers good for out wifi card? http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=21999&lang=eng&OSVersion=Windows%208%2C%2064-bit*&DownloadType=%0A%09%09%09%09%09%09%09Software%20Applications%0A%09%09%09%09%09%09
is it a driver for wifi card and wireless display? -
Hello guys, since this is the owner's thread I thought this might be a good place to post. When using the 660m on battery, does anyone have a problem with it dropping to around 135mhz? On battery I heard it's supposed to drop to ~400mhz. Mine does, but then it drops even lower. Any one know a fix?
-
so... my girlfriend cancelled her order for the y580 and just ordered it from amazon. she got her order from amazon and then after a week her order from lenovo arived, but it was supposed to be cancelled. The thing is she still has her money and they didnt charge her lol. So now she just has two laptops, but shes keeping the one from lenovo unopened just in case they charge her.
Does this usually happen with lenovo? like cancelling the order but then still getting the laptop -
That happens to me only when it's running on battery. So my solution either leave it plugged or shut it down. Mine takes less than 20 sec to boot up, so is not a big sacrifice.
-
I'm not expert in the matter, but I think this topic has been discuss before. Short answer... NEVER use the 660m on battery. I know is a lame answer nobody wants to hear, but it's the unfortunate truth. The computer drops the capacity of the GPU on purpose so it can handle it when using the battery, or something like that.
Also, check your lenovo energy management, mine drops to 135 MHz when power saver or balanced is selected (bicycle or volky icon), and that's while it's plugged.
But again, is best not to use the 660m on battery. -
i posted a thread about this before.
the only way to pin it to 400mhz is to use Nvidia Inspector. Otherwise it will only hold for a minute before crippling to 135mhz.
Use at your own risk, because it may damage the battery in the long run. -
Has anyone noticed WiFi connectivity seems to be slower on battery? Even refreshing an existing page seems like a ~1 second lag on battery.
-
what's the suitable caddy to replace the dvd bay, with a hdd?
-
I'm sorry if this question has been answered already. Did you all update to Windows 8? Do you recommend it?
-
It's set to sleep and happens even if the battery is fully charged.
On another note, I connected the Y580 with an HDMI cable to my TV but the screen was cut off from the top and had black bars on the sides. Has anyone else had this issue? I checked the NVIDIA settings and that seems to be fine. -
with AMD gpu's, there was an option to control under/overscan.
maybe you can find something like that. -

I'm sorry if this question has been answered already. Did you all update to Windows 8? Do you recommend it?
i know... but there are 220+ pages to search!
if annyone knows or remembers where its mentioned i'd be grateful -
--- I highly recommend it..All my games and programs from windows 7 work----
- I own the Y470 and I am currently running windows 8...I hated it before because there wasn't any windows 8 drivers for Y470.
- I found the drivers for my laptop on the chinese lenovo site and I have been loving it since.
- Windows 8 has a bit of a steep learning curve since the start menu has been replaced with the metro screen above.
- Most common functions like control panel and other settings are hidden but still accessible.
- Another annoying thing to have to know is shortcuts since it makes win8 easier to navigate..it took me some time but I got used to it.
- My top shortcuts are (alt+f4 to shutdown, widowskey + tab to multitask) (Windows key+F to search files) (winkey + Q to search programs) (winkey + w to search settings)..
- it sounds cumbersome but after you figure it out, it is pretty simple to navigate..
- One thing I hate is when you first boot window 8, most file associates are tied to metro apps..This means you have to change you defaults for pictures,,If you click a picture, it opens the picture app in the windows section..Pdfs are also opened in metro so you have to download the respective apps from the web to change that..
PROS and CONS
- I love the improved task manager, it is more detailed and has option to disable startup programs right from the task manager..Windows8 also uses only 1gb of ram on idle comapred to windows 7 which uses 2 gb
- Windows 8 boots in 5 to 8 seconds with my 750gb seagate momentus drive
- feels faster and snappier than windows 7
- I love the metro screen (a lot of people hate it)...I barely use the metro screen unless I want to quickly check mail, use netflix, espn and other apps on the metro screen..
- Itunes runs much smoother for me in windows 8...no lag at all
- it hibernates and wakes up way faster than win7 for me
- I love the Ui changes in windows 8 (some may hate it)
I can go on about the pros about win8 but I hate typing up long posts...
CONS
Steep learning curve (requires patience and microsoft should have more videos on how to access hidden functions on win8)
Lenovo recovery doesn't work in win8...I personally use "Easeus Todo Backup free 5.3" which is way better in my opinion
p.s. Make sure to completely uninstall Lenovo theather because it makes other apps crash on win8...
I have pinned all the programs I use on the taskbar and "objectdock" (the dock above the taskbar)
You also install the window 8 start menu replacements like "start8" which brings back the windows 7 start menu if you don't want to deal with the metro screen...I personally love the metro since I have quick access to Netflix, espn, news and my Xbox account..YMMV.. -
Does anyone have this problem? i posted a new thread with this but maybe that wasnt a good thing.
i've only had the Y580 for around a month and a half now but since last week it keeps BSOD'ing and having issues with a Display driver NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 306.97 stopped responding and has successfully recovered. when i play graphics intensive games. Ive looked around the net for answers and ive tried the ff reccomendation from others but to no avail using this site:
Nvidia Display Driver Has Stopped Responding and Successfully Recovered
Here's what ive done so far and the problem persists:
- ran memtests w/o problems
- ran prime95 w/o problems
- upgraded my BIOS to the latest version for my laptop
- upgraded/uninstalled/rolledback graphics drivers (clean install too)
- COMPLETE reboot (very painful)
- system restore
- changed TDR settings from 2 - 8
- clean registry with CCleaner
- changed the physX settings from auto-select to choosing GPU
- current driver 310.70
Now its gotten worse before when i check the NVIDIA Control Panel Settings to the adjust image settings with preview it would only show fuzzy graphics malfunction but still roll and rare BSOD's. Now when i click on that it BSOD's 100% of the time. I cant even play 3D games anymore it just BSOD's. I ran Furmark to see stability and that causes BSOD's too its so frustrating and sad because this is a new laptop. I not experienced at all with technical issues.
2 weeks ago it was all fine running games like Skyrim and Witcher 2 in Ultra and working perfectly. I noticed this problem started occurring when windows updated. I play games at the Lenovo Dynamic Graphics Setting in power management. Ive overclocked i guess.. using the Lenovo Dynamic Graphics and changing graphics settings in Nvidia but ive never changed in-system settings for overclocking and what not. Everything else works fine with no problems. I have no idea what to do now. If anyone has insight please share and discuss the knowledge -
I remember that on stock drivers, when nvidia is idle, its about 135mh on gpu. And now, on 310.70 driver its 405mgz. Can anyone confirm?

I reverted back to lenovo 295 and clock is ok now, 135 on idle:

Any explanation why on 310 on idle i have 405? -

Seriously thinking of purchasing the y580.
What do you guys user it for and how is it working out for you?
Anything I should know?
Only 2 slots for RAM, right? -
what kind of perfomence should I have in Far Cry 3 or DiRT 3? I want to check if everything with laptop is OK, because my CineBench 11.5 CPU score is only about 4,5 points although I have i7-3630...

what's the best ssd for the y580? I saw the crcial m4 but i'm worried about the reviews:
Amazon.com: Stephen Furr's review of Crucial m4 256GB mSATA Internal Solid Stat... -
They are up to version 04mh, which is the version my drive came with. Just installed the drive and installed Win8 and made recovery image. Now going through driver install.

Hey guys within a few weeks I am getting my Y580 with the Msata 32gb ssd. A few questions.
1. I plan on getting a 256gb SSD to replace the HDD and was wondering how hard it is to make it the cashe for my files.
2. How fast is the Msata SSD that comes with the Y580?
3. What is the bloatware I should get rid of when i get my Y580?
4. I am getting the SSD to raise reliability why heat stays low. Anythign else I should keep to keep temps in the safe zone or am I good with the ssd? -
I would think u be better off installing the os on the 256gb ssd. Too much of a waste to use it as a cache drive.
Also lenovo imho doesn't come with that much bloatware. (perhaps due to my fresh install it all got deleted)
Sent from my XT910 using Tapatalk 2 -
then what would I use the Msata for?
-
get the 256gb msata ssd, keep the 1TB as a Media drive.?
the 32gb SSD could then be sold off or transplanted to another laptop -
For this Y580:
• 3rd Generation Intel Core i7-3630QM Processor( 2.40GHz 6MB)
• Windows 8 64
• NVIDIA GeForce GTX660M 2GB
• 8.0GB PC3-12800 DDR3 SDRAM 1600 MHz
• 15.6" FHD LED Glare Wedge 1920x1080
I have been seeing it being discounted to 899, wondering if people think it will go lower? Trying to determine how long I wait! thx -
im getting mine for 999.99 today
Also why get such a big Msata when its slower? the way I see it wouldnt it be good to have y OS and startup program and something like office on it?
