I bought my 2nd Y580 with the same specs for that price, upgraded to 16GB RAM and a 256GB Agilty 4 SSD and loving it.

SSDs are not like physical hard drives. Larger capacity drives are actually faster than smaller ones with some controllers. In reality though the speeds should be pretty much the same regardless of capacity.

As for the install/programs: I treat my 256GB mSATA SSD just like a regular system drive. I put all programs (Office, etc.) on there and games, downloads, media files, etc. go on the 1TB HDD. Windows 7 sets up automatically to avoid services which can lessen the lifespan of the drive so there's not too much you need to do that's different to regular installs.

i recently completed far cry 3 on high settings and full resolution. awesome graphics.
i also checked battlefield 3 and black ops too on high-ultra settings. runs smooth.
    some points though.
-doesnt run games well on battery.
-hard disk temp jumps to 55+ after 30-40 mins of play.
-the dark scenes of a movie/game appear darker.

I've just configured and finished clean installing Windows 8 onto my brand spanking new Y580 :) It's quite a nice machine especially as I've added a Samsung 840 Pro 256Gb SSD, 16Gb Vengeance pointless fastest ram possible and a Crucial 256Gb mSata drive.

(If have loved a dual 660m sli though - Can't have everything)

This happened to me once too. With the power off and the power supply disconnected try removing the battery, wait a moment then put it back.

Would anyone know where to buy an original lenovo charger for this laptop as I cannot find anything on the UK Lenovo site, Amazon, insight or kelkoo! (Other than the usual rubbish knock-off items)

So I've been having a problem with my Y580 dropping framerate during gaming (Borderlands 2 and Torchlight 2). The game would run fine at a nice 60 fps, then suddenly drop to 30 fps for a second or two, then go right back to 60 fps. This is getting really annoying, and happens very frequently.

FYI, I'm on Windows 7 x64, and using Nvidia driver 310.70

Here is a video demonstrating the problem: Lenovo Y580 Framerate drop - YouTube

it could be a whole bunch of things but let me suggest a few tips..

    1. go to the nvidia settings and make sure that the game is set to "prefer maximum performance...

    or

    2. make sure the computer is set to high performance (which I assume you already know but just for clarification)...right click the battery icon in the status area and go to power options. and click "change plan settings" under "High Performance"..

"click Change advanced power settings" and click the "plus sign" next to "processor Power management"...change your settings to match what I have in the screenshot.

    or

    3. disable the "energy management.exe" at startup for battery management..Lenovo's built in battery management can sometimes limit performance in games and make fps fluctuate all over the place..It is a bit weird to explain but I use a program called "CCleaner" to disable this part of the Lenovo Energy Mangement..fan control and the "touch buttons" above the keyboard will still work...look at the screenshot below to see what I mean...the greyed out one called "Energy management" is disabled and the "energyUtility" is active and allows control for the fan and touch buttons for our computers..

p.s. Hope this helps, I used to have this issue about a year ago when I first had it..I think the turbo boost is active and makes the cpu overheat which can affect fps of the games as well..

Hello guys, I've been enjoying my Y580 for quite some time now but I've been wondering. I tried to upgrade my drivers from the stock 295.55 to the newer ones 304.79 and 310.70 but noticed the fps was lower; min, max, and average. I tried benchmarking it with fraps on me3 on the docking station of the citadel (if anyone is familiar) where there are a lot of npc's. This was done a month ago or whenever the 310.70 came out. Is this something with the game, drivers, I dunno what else?

*edit: I've already tried different settings such as maximum performance and the lot. All tests were done on same settings with 4xmsAA and such.

I did a clean install of windows 7 about a year ago to fix these issues a while ago..I think the problem is intel turbo boost has issues with lenovo Y470 and lowering the cpu to 90% to fix it..

p.s. I installed windows 8 about a month ago and I love it..way better than win 7..uses less ram, better performance and faster boot..i use "start8" and I don't miss windows 7 at all.. and too Y470 and Y570 owners than plan to migrate to Win8 in the future..one key recovery won't work anymore ( i don't miss it since I use "Easeus Todo backup Free" which is way better imo)..

There's a new BIOS update out, with the following change:

This could be very interesting... I have had a few BSODs and complete lockups with garbled sound from time to time, so hopefully this is the fix!

I have very minor issue. The screen hinge of my Y580 is more wobbly compared to the very cheap Ideapad with Pentium dual core specs. Is there a way to tighten the hinge? The screen hinge of my old Sandy Bridge DV6 is even firmer. Do anyone else have this slight issue?

Hey guys I am installing an SSD on my Y580. It comes with a 16gb msata and 750gb hdd. I plan on replacing the HDD, but once the SSD is installed are there any programs I should delete? I heard that you either delete sleep or hibernation. Also anything I should delete off my Y580 from the get go, other then Mcafee.

I have the "Win 7" hardware, and updated to the previous BIOS while running Win7. Now I'm on Win 8. Anyone else running Win 8 with this latest BIOS? Is it safe to run the BIOS updater under Win 8?

Its safe to try. Be sure to run as admin. If it can't flash, the utility simply won't work.

If you buy windows 8 pro, you will get downgrade rights to windows 7. For free? Nope.

Darn, well my friends are really urging me to get Win 7 and replace Win 8, but so far I have no issues with Win 8. Also when I was cloning the file called PBR_DRV was unable to copy and I am not sure what that is. So far things seem to be running normal

Tell your friends that if they want you to have windows 7, they can buy it for you. I've heard plenty said about how windows 8 is superior in performance even though metro sucks up and down. If you like it, keep it. I myself have come to the conclusion that the pros outweigh the cons on windows 8. Especially when one of the pros is that I don't have to buy it, it was included.

I'm considering upgrading my early 2011 MBP 15" & was wondering if this is a worthy upgrade? I can upgrade the ssd msata to a 256 msata from crucial right?

    I'm considering getting this from Costco Lenovo® IdeaPad® Y580 Intel® Core

Anyone running ubuntu 12.04 on there's? I'll be installing it if I end up getting one.

I got mine from B&H, they are Orthodox jewish so be sure not to order on friday or saturday. They ship pretty well and give good prices.

For the SSD I got the kit, but the cloning software was so I used a free one I can look at later if you want. It cloned it perfectly aside from one file that didnt seem to matter. Also its free! Also I went Sata not Msata.

The costco deal in price minus the other stuff is about 100usd more then I payed for mine. I honestyl didnt get the MBP because of cost and it didnt do what I needed it to do. I like the Y580 so far. Win8 is easy enough to figure out, if you have an ssd running in it it keeps nice and cool, the build quality to me is okay as in I would put it in some sort of protective casing and not be too rough with it. Aside from that no complaints, but I fail to understand why people complain about the weight (coming from guy who carrys 30lbs of gear on him during a recreational sport).

gonna wait for the y590, i think it would be future proof, plus the only version on the y580 we have in my country is 768p screen, hope they will at least put an 900p screen in standard in the y590..

Just an FYI, I don't know of anyone who is running their boot manager off of their msata on the new bios in the new y580s. There is work on an unlocked bios going on at tech inferno forums. No successful flashes yet. (no bricks though either which is more important.) Seems you can install an OS on the msata in the new y580 but you can only boot it through the hdd's boot manager. It won't truly boot from the msata until boot manager is running off of the msata which doesn't work. BTW, Costco price is too high. Direct from lenovo cycles sales through. If you are willing to wait, you can get the same laptop minus the useless for people who plan to upgrade 16gb msata for around 900. It'll come around again I'm sure.

    Hello,

I am planning to upgrade the ram to 16 GB.. as both modules would be newer from a combo kit .. can anyone tell me if i go with
    a CL-11 ram as here
    vs
    a CL=10 ram as here

will i be getting any performance difference?

is the dual config gets better as the CL decreases?

And since this is a very long thread.. can someone who has successfully upgraded their rams to 16GB with dual channel working post the link to the place from they have purchased? That would be helpful.

    Thanks.

    Hi there,
I 've read somewhere that i7-3630QM cannot "fully support" 16GB RAM, thus it is recommended users upgrade to i7-3720QM or i7-3740QM (at least).

    Is the above true?
Should the answer be positive, which one of the two above is favorable for a Y580 (taken away the price factor)?

    Thanks in advance!

    Cheers

so I'm having issues with my wireless. Here's my config:

    IdeaPad Y580
    i7-3610
    8 GB PC12800
    240GB Mushkin SSD (Win7x64 Pro, SP1 installed)
    1 TB Seagate 5400 RPM
    nVidia GTX 660M (2GB)

    and importantly:
    Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2200 BGN 2x2 HMC WiFi/Bluetooth Adapter
    Driver 15.3.1.2, 30 September 2012
    D-Link DIR-825 router

well, the wireless is giving me issues, but none of my other home devices are having problems. Doing some research and I'm looking into finding a new wireless card for the laptop, but apparently Lenovo has some type of BIOS-level restriction that prevents upgrading the wireless network card?

does anyone know if this is true, and if it is, does that mean I'm screwed, because the wireless range on this PoS card is just terrible!

It is written on the ComputerUpgradeKing's site when you try to customize a Y580.
After choosing 3630 & 16gb, you get a notification that a 3720 is required to better support 16GB of RAM.

There was a thread about this before, but it pertained to Windows 7. As for myself, I just swapped out the 1tb HDD, installed a SSD there, did a clean install of Windows 7 and made an image of the clean install with all of the Y580 drivers updated The only thing I lost was the use of the OKR, which can be remapped for something else.

If I perform a clean install of Windows 8 on my y580, where can I find the currently installed programs such as PowerDVD, Power2Go, VeriFace, OneKey Theater, etc? These are currently found in the Lenovo folder in my Start menu. Second, will these programs work under Windows 8?

Since the BIOS update, has anyone been experiencing higher CPU temps (~10-15C higher) while idling?
