That seems a bit harsh and unrealistic for the laptop.
Maybe you should have researched the capabilities of the laptop before purchasing it?
Unless Lenovo directly advertised it as Nvidia 3D Vision compatible you have no grounds in my book to diss Optimus or Lenovo like that man

Most current games will run just fine on medium details (i.e. > 30fps), but if you want to go for high or ultra, you will have to live with a resolution trade-off

    -------------------------------------------------------------

I was a bit too over-eager when reinstalling my Y580 and ended up deleting the "LENOVO" partition, i.e. I am now missing some software like OneKey Theater II, Veriface 4.0 (And who knows what else..). I don't seem to be able to locate all those programs on the official Lenovo website. Does anyone know how I can obtain them?

    Hello All,
I just returned from Fry's with a Tucano Colore Second Skin Sleeve for my Y580. Manufacturer's Link: Colore for notebook 15.4/16
It's a perfect fit for this model, nice and snug. One thing I like about it is that it has some built in corner protection inside the sleeve to prevent scratches from the zippers on the laptop. I paid $20, even though it lists for $30, and it was just what I was looking for when it came to having something between the laptop and the inside compartment of my laptop pocket inside my backpack - nice piece of extra insurance!

    Thanks.

Well, this is really interesting. I just set up another one of these laptops for a friend and decided to set it up with OKR, as they aren't too techy and it will make reinstalls easy if they mess things up. I used the OKR 7.0 disc that's floating around and made a nice 256 MB C: and the rest as D: storage. Guess what? The Bluetooth detected and worked without an issue! I now have a feeling it is somehow related to having the correct partitions present perhaps? As on all of my complete partition wipe clean installs I can never get Bluetooth working. Either that or it is somehow related to the fact that I use an mSATA drive now as the primary drive in a dual-drive setup (the HDD is one large partition for storage), which again causes some kind of issue with the Bluetooth device.

I know it doesn't really make any sense but it is literally the only thing I have done different since the clean installs that never had Bluetooth detected. Kind of frustrating still, but it is some small progress.

Hi guys. I need to know what are (and where I can find) screws that are holding service hatch? Today I opened my 580 to clean it and screws just aren't good after maybe 4-5 times of screwing them in and off :p

I performed a clean install of Win7 Ult. on a 128MB SSD and reformated the 1TB HDD to a media/documents drive (copying the Y580 driver files first!), losing OKR as a result. I'm not really saddened by the loss of OKR, as my clean install image and other periodic images of my OS drive (SSD) is good enough for me. Bluetooth has worked fine from the getgo, where it only needed user intervention to enable it.

Not too many problems if you drop AA down. I set it to 4x and at that resolution you can't see any jaggies anyhow. Of course there are always intensive games which will chug, e.g. GTA IV maxed, but most I have tried run at medium to highest settings pretty nicely.

Yeah, I don't understand why I am having issues, I did check and both laptops have the exact same integrated Bluetooth/Wi-Fi combo card, it's just that mine running the clean mSATA install does not detect Bluetooth.

I have found a good thread on it here actually, one of the most comprehensive yet, and it is recently updated, so I will be following it with interest. Even though it is a different laptop model they are referring to the same Broadcom combo card.

bc the gtx660 on heavy games is 90+ C and the fan isnt at 100% (i'm in south america and its a hot summer)

i'd like for example that when a certain temp in reached (80-85) the fan rumps up to max

    TIA

I recently noticed there is a gap between the right hand side hinge and the body. Could you all please check yours and reply back?
    Attaching pic for the clarification.

Am talking about the encircled part on the right hand side.
Will this be a problem in the future?

Fairly certain that is intentional. You should see a gap on the left hinge as well. The hinge mounts to brackets on the outside edge of the hinge, instead of the inside, which I would say is more typical in laptops (if not on both sides).

I bought the Samsung 840 500GB for $295 last week. I used EASEUS Partition Master to copy my OCZ Agility 4 256 over to the Samsung and then moved my Steam install over as well (193GB) from my 1TB HDD. I guess I've done all I can to upgrade this thing, for now. :p

Hey guys, been enjoying my Y580 for about a week now. I did a clean install of Win8 to a Crucial 256gb SSD, everything seems to be working fine. However, I do not think I am getting the full potential out of the SSD, its read speeds seem slow :/ Are there any tweaks specific to the Y580 for increasing SSD speeds? Any help would be greatly appreciated, found some good info on this thread before buying!

Edit: it is an mSATA SSD

    Hi all
So I'm having an issue with my mSata drive (Crusial 128gb) every couple of weeks it will act up just stops doing what ever it is I'm m doing. I hard reboot (hold down power button) and it comes up to the windows needs a repair disk. I went into the bios and it doesn't see the HD. Let it sit and reboot a 3-5 times and it boots fine. So HD or laptop?
I did a clean install of windows 8 on the ssd.
I'm thinking HD, I was going to get a 2.5 ssd and just install Windows on that and get a HD caddy for the dvd drive and move the 1TB over, and send the msata in. Thoughts? Is there any way to test the mSata?
    Edit: I don't have a repair disk.....

NOTE: This was posted in Lenovo's support forum:

Ideapad Y580 discontinued??? A horror story:

Had my eye on an Ideapad y580 for a long time due mainly to the high end graphics card in the system. I do some light gaming but was really looking for a desktop replacement that could run CAD & rendering programs effectively.

Pulled the trigger on a 1080p system in late December for around $900 after tax (10% shopdiscover discount) through lenovo's website. Laptop Review has Lenovo ranked as overall #2 so I thought I was working with a reliable manufacturer.

    Horror story begins...

Received the unit within 2 weeks. Completely acceptable shipping time. What disappointed me first was the packaging. 1 flimsy layer of cardboard for a delicate piece of machinery? My gf orders shoes off zappos & they come in a box - inside ANOTHER box - with a bunch of foam/paper between the two! Shoes under $75 vs intricate piece of machinery over %1000. Surprising to say the least, but not a critical failure.

After browsing the system for a few hours I shut it down - no problems. Upon booting it up the next day I was prompted to accept automatic windows 8 updates, which I did. It took about 10 minutes then rebooted up to windows. After attempting to shut down (approx. 1 hour later) there was a very long delay (over 5 minutes) in the shutdown procedure but it eventually did. After trying to turn the system back on I was met with a bsod (blue screen of death) with an "Unmountable Boot Volume" error displaying. Windows 8 automatic repair kicks in after, but it's stuck in a reboot loop where the same issue keeps happening over and over. Tried one key recovery and seemed like it was working but would eventually just reboot and the whole process would start over.

Naturally called tech support & requested recovery discs be sent so I could try booting directly to the disc (I figured worst case scenario I would re-install windows). After receiving them and trying it out - I'm stuck with the same issue. Configured the system to boot to the disc drive first but that's not even being recognized! At this point I'm out of options for what I can fix myself and have tech support see if they have any other recommendations.

Went through the whole process with a nice tech-agent named Liz and she basically said that they will issue be a replacement since it was under 30 days since I ordered it and that it cannot be fixed. Fine - maybe I got a lemon. I'm very disappointed but it happens I guess. This was on Saturday 2/2/13. She said that I would have to speak to a sales agent on Monday b/c they are not there on the weekend. Come Monday (2/4) I called the sales agent & he saw the notes from tech-support and put in for a replacement. They also gave me a shipping label for my old unit and I sent it back the next day.

    Here's where the fun starts...

I have to wait another 4 days for a supervisor to authorize the replacement (before the order will even go into their system). I was annoyed about this but was being understanding of their internal procedures. Eventually I get an e-mail from the supervisor (SSR Specialist on 2/8) stating that:

"Further to your query on your order number, this is to inform you that we have processed the replacement request and the new order number is XXXXXXXXXX. We apologize for any inconvenience caused, we would also like to let you know you are a valuable customer for Lenovo and we appreciate your business with us."

Silly me for thinking they actually did value my business!

The next Monday (2/11) I check the status of the order which is scheduled to go out the following week (2/18) with a delivery a couple of days later. 2/18 comes around and now it's 2/19. I eventually call sales to find out what's going on since now it's been pushed another day. I'm literally told my the sales agent that it's being delayed due to bad weather in China and they are doing their best to ship the unit out ASAP. Fine I say. Weather happens right?? Check on Wednesday 2/20 & now it's been pushed to early March!

More time out my day to make another phone call. This is a month and a half later - I don't have a laptop - I'm out $1000 and I'm stressed for having to constantly call to find out what the story is. Great first experience with Lenovo!

Wednesday 2/20 I'm told that they are having trouble with manufacturing this unit (whether that's do to some part that they couldn't get their hands on or something more - I don't know and the sales agent didn't seem to know either). The guy assures me that he is going to dig into this issue and get back to my by Friday 2/22 at the latest with a FIRM ship date. He is very apologetic and seemed sorry for all the in-conveyance - even offering to give me 5% back for what I paid for the unit.

I give him the benefit of the doubt, hoping that considering I was given what appeared to be a defective unit to begin with, they would come through and get me the product I paid for.

Drum roll....check on Thursday 2/21 & the order has been cancelled!! Here is the e-mail response I received shortly after:

"This is to inform you that based on the conversation that we had on 2013/02/20, would like to inform you that the order has been cancelled due to the unavailability of the order. Hence as you had requested for a replacement order, you will have to place a new request or will have to return the package for a full refund. Hence please revert back for further clarifications on this.

I still don't quite understand what that last line meant or why he started two consecutive sentences with "Hence" but it's just icing on the cake at this point. Needless to say I'm beyond frustrated at this point. I call and am told that the "Part #" is being discontinued for this laptop. I was in-between meetings & didn't have MORE time to devote to Lenovo sales so I told him to issue me a full refund as I have absolutely no confidence in this company anymore.

Base on the last email I received, I'm led to believe that the laptop is being discontinued. Why then, can I place an order for another Y580 on lenovo's website!?!? Any other respectable company would have at least had the courtesy to write an e-mail that makes sense - especially considering the massive in-conveyance I've been through already. The order is "unavailable" and a "replacement cannot be issued" so I can "request a refund" or "place a new request"??? Place a new request for what!?!? Just get me my laptop! Nevermind the fact that he didn't even bother to check his records regarding the original laptop. If he had, he would have seen that their their service center has had it for over a month!

It is now Sunday 2/24 and I'm planning on calling tomorrow to find out the status of the refund and exactly what went on with the replacement and why it was cancelled.

Hence, I'm led to believe that is model is being discontinued. Hence, Lenovo does NOT appreciate my business. Hence, that's my y580 horror story.

That could well be true. They seem to be really pushing the Lenovo Y500 now based on my recent visits to some dealers to purchase another Y580. I was contemplating one because of the SLI graphics but I need an optical drive fairly frequently as well and the ODD bay is not available here yet, they come only with the second GFX card bay.

Your issues with booting and the recovery discs could be a UEFI problem. Have you tried disabling that in BIOS first?

    hi guys,

Does anyone here have the msata and hdd combined with rapiddrive from fresh install? Do you experience windows startup repair loop after installing drivers/softwares with it usually if you used 30gb+ with drive C (32gb msata ssd but 500gb with rapiddrive) it will crash. Any steps on how to do it right or ill just forget this rapiddrive thing and stick with expresscache?

Once my refund get's back to me (surprise: 3-5 days), I was thinking about the y500 as well since it's SLI card(s) are rated higher than the GTX 660m in some tests. This entire experience with Lenovo has completely turned me off, however. Considering all of the issues the y500 is having (re: the Lenovo forum) I'm putting the thought aside. I take it you've been happy with your y580? It's really unfortunate because it's got great specs for the price but I really cannot see myself giving these guys another chance after this ordeal.

Unfortunately, I sent the laptop back after I couldn't get the recovery discs to work so I can't try disabling the UEFI. I assumed I would be getting a replacement but you see how that turned out...

That was indeed a horrible experience. Based on all the Lenovo customer service outrage I'm surprised my y400 arrived early and with no defects. I wouldn't advice ordering one at the moment however, the shipping dates have been pushed back to mid March it seems.

Can some one please tell me what happens when you press Fn key + F5? I have a Y480 which I assume would be the same. Do you get a screen prompt to turn the wifi on and off? I could have sworn mine used to show this, but not now.

Whenever my computer display turns off from inactivity (screen is black with no screen saver), the fans go full speed as if the cpu or gpu is getting worked. Anyone have similar issues? Im running a clean install of Win8 if that helps

Is there any way I can monitor what causes this?

So they're discontinuing the current models of the y580... It seems likely they'd move on to making the next gen y line laptop with most likely a touchscreen. A touchscreen is what is sorely missing from the y580 with windows 8. I don't think they are trying to push the y500. Its missing too many features to be the true successor of the y580 even if they originally planned it that way. Poor battery life because of no switchable graphics which leads to a lack of WIDI as well. Anyway I wouldn't be surprised if they announced a y580 touch variant soon whether they'll still call it a y580 or assign a new model number all together.

Ah, that's too bad. I am quite happy with my Y580, I purchased a Lenovo based on a previous 3000 C100 model I had 6 years ago that was rock solid (it's still going!) and I think they are generally a very reliable brand. In my experience they have better quality than similarly priced brands such as Acer and are more reliable than even premium ones like HP (I had to fully RMA one of their Pavilion models about 5 times due to various mobo/HDD failures).

I ended up upgrading to the FHD screen version recently and selling off my old HD one and it is fantastic with the better screen. It's a shame about the Y500 if it is having issues as I think it is a very promising idea (if a little gimmicky) to offer swappable bays for hardcore gamers, etc. I think the model itself looks amazing though, the red lighting is beautiful!

I hope you can find something similar to the features/value of a Y580 soon, you could look at the MSI GE60, it's basically the same hardware and about the same price. They are still available AFAIK. Or if you want you can bump it up to better specs and go for the GE70 (675MX GPU and 17.3" screen) but it's twice the price.

Just to confirm, you were able to upgrade your screen for the Y500? Which screen did you upgrade to exactly?
Do you have full brightness control?

I would only get the Y500/Y580 if I can change the screen. I have no love for Glossy...

Just got the Y580 -- The left bottom corner of the touchpad seems loose. Is it suppose to have play and flex (not when clicking hard, just light touching)? Seems not to register touches some clicks either...

I just had my y580 refuse to charge the battery again. Previously i had to power down the machine, remove the power and the battery, put back the battery then the power to solve the problem. However this time it took several tries to get it to work again. Perhaps the battery needed to be disconnected for a while to solve the problem?

Anyhow I thought I would share this in car mite have the problem.

I guess the Y580 really will be gone soon as the Lenovo official site is only selling 1 model (as opposed to 4 of the Y500). And the Y580 they're selling has a 1366x768 screen with 6gb of ram. Leftover stock, I guess.

No, I didn't upgrade the screen, I bought an entirely new Y580 - the FHD version. That's what I wanted initially but couldn't get it where I am, eventually it was released though, and I was able to sell my previous 1366x768 Y580 and get the upgraded model.

If you want something exactly the same specs-wise as a Y580 with a matte screen, take a look at the MSI GE60 series.

I had the same problem, the touchpad was loose and had no resistance if pressed, because of that it didn't recognized the clicks like it should. Went straight to the guarantee service to get it fixed.

Returned with a loose keyboard. So they reinstalled new upper cover again...

Be very careful if you plan to lift the keyboard. When you unscrew the 3 screws (two are on the bottom and one below the plate). The keyboard is mounted with little plastic hinges, to get them loose you have to put a guitar pick in the gap between the keyboard and the upper cover and release them. I tried with a thick metal screwdriver and after first opening they already had visual damage. It's hard to explain with words, and there is absolutely no mention about them it in the offical service manual !

The screw placement is also terrible. Only three screws to balance the keyboard and all of them are on the middle or right side. There was a visible screw on the left side, but the engineers simply sealed since it is impossible to screw it because the fan blocks the access from below...

    Guy,
I just have on quick question
Has anyone managed to connect the y580 to an external tv via hdmi using the nvidia output? If so how does one do this, it seems like only intel would be used, so I guess it would defeat the purpose of playing those good games or watching those good movies, please let me know.

    Peace

My 580 is hooked up via hdmi to a receiver that feeds into a tv. It's been hooked up directly to the tv in the past as well. It's hooked up this way 99% of the time. I've had zero problems.

Tried newer drivers, but I've had nothing but success with the stock drivers that came with the system more than six months ago. I've played quite a few games since I've had the 580 and it has been a great experience. Still extremely satisfied with it.

Running windows 7 with the stock drivers, which if I remember correctly are 295.93.

Thanks Syed, the only other thing I wanted you to confirm is the use of nvidia while going hdmi to the tv (everyone seems to say it would you the Intel 4000), so were you able to use the nvidia for video out? Or does it all depend on what exactly your settings in the nvidia control panel are - if you set a game to use nvidia and play that game when the y580 is hdmi'ed to a tv, does it mean that automatically it is nvidia who is taking charge of video out - can you please confirm this for me?

    Peace

Just so everyone knows, the Y500 is also available at Costco's website for $1,100. I just places my order It comes with:
    16GB ram
1 TB HDD with 16 GB SSD
    Nvidia 650 SLI

On top of that, they bump the warranty an extra year longer and there's a 90 day return policy. Just letting everyone know since I have yet to see anyone mention this and it may be helpful to anyone still in the market for one. I posted this in another thread, but this one semms a little more active...

I'm not sure why it would matter if the intel graphics were being used for displaying out to a tv. As far as I can tell, when playing a game, Nvidia kicks in and takes over. Even if that's not happening and the 660gtx is handling everything, games still use it and work perfectly fine.

When you open up the Nvidia control panel, you get these three pages of settings. I set my preferred graphics as Nvidia for the global default. I remember changing it to that and maybe that's what makes it work. However, if you look at the third image, despite it saying the physx processor is the 660, it's still showing the display output to my sony receiver coming from the Intel graphics. Maybe that's just for physx, but regardless of what it shows, everything works just the way it should.

I've had my 580 plugged into a receiver or tv via hdmi from day 1 and I'm not exaggerating when I say I've had zero problems. The 660 runs games great on my tv and I've never actually played anything on the laptop display itself. When I turn the receiver off, the display simply switches back to the laptop and works just fine there as well. It switches seamlessly and works exactly the way it's supposed to.

    Hope that helps.

Edit : I wanted to specifically mention that the audio through hdmi works perfectly as well. I have a 5.1 setup and the 580 to receiver through hdmi supports it and the surround works the way it should. When I turn the receiver off, the audio as well as the video switch back to the laptop. Audio then plays through the laptop speakers as they should.

Has anybody tried Expresscache Software? I am tempted to try it now that I have installed my own mSSD but wanted to check if somebody has done the same.

Thanks a ton. All of what you have said helps. I now see your point, I have set the glocal setting to nvidia too, just wanted to put some of my doubts to rest.
