Still we need a refresh of this model, a Y590 with Haswell and GTX 760M + and a 1080p screen and that gorgeous ability to deal with the heat of the CPU and GPU![]()
-
Ye, i wish it will be as you say. Nothing weird. Maximum touch screen. I remember acer 5920g perfect construction and its sucsessor 5930 wich was build of crappy parts, was looking like cheap
-
Does anybody here is in still with stock OS of y580? Can someone send me the official screensaver of Lenovo Y580? I just really want it thanks! just pm me or upload it to DL site and post it here, so if someone needs it too. thank you!
-
I guess the Y580 owners thread is the best place for this question:
RE: mSATA as a boot drive on the Y580 i7 3630qm NV GX660m 1TB SATA HDD with:
BIOS: 5DCN89WW
Win8 64bit preinstalled
Crucial M4 mSATA 256GB SSD Model # M4-CT256M4SSD3 (MH07 iirc, most recent drivers)
I have some long threads, with BIOS picks, at:
Anandtech
Lenovo
Crucial
Beyond3d
I am seeing some posts/threads here where others had the same issue--but also see that some people are running the Y580 with the Crucial M4 mSATA as their boot drive.
What am I doing wrong?
I have fiddled with UEFI/AHCI/"Other OS"/Disable Secure Boot/uninstall Intel RST/etc. Nothing works -- the BIOS info page says the M4 is in the mSATA but the boot order won't display it as an option.
If I go to Legacy and "Other OS" (instead of Windows 8 64bit) it will appear but my Windows 8 recovery does not want to see it (maybe because the drive is GPT instead of MBR?) and the boot process doesn't see it (says check cables). I am stuck with the Windows 8 recovery disk on a USB HDD (which, ironically, shows up under the EFI boot sequence!--and the thing is as old as dirt) and have no Win8 standard ISO.
Any tips or do I need to return the mSATA drive as it is not compatible?
I would really like to boot from the mSATA drive with the HDD on SATA. (I am frustrated as well as I am not sure I can return the mSATA and plenty of folks have this working).
PS- Would I be having these issues with a SATA SSD in the main slot, specifically a Samsung 840 / Pro?
Also, should I be spinning this off to a new thread? -
Hi, I'm thinking about getting cooling pad for my Y580 and can't decide between Notepal X-Slim or Glacier NC400?
How X-Slim works with our laptop?
Is notepal U3 worth paying $10 more ($36 in my coutry,X-Slim $25) or I won't see the difference? -
Notepal u3 will be big for you its more sufficient for 17" laptops. Notepal u2 may perfect fit for 15.6" laptops. And i am in search of better coolpad too. Can't able to get the goodone
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4 Beta -
Yeah, I know it's a bit big but I'm ok with that, actually I think it looks very good. U2, in the other hand is to small for Y580 in my opinion for, at least from what I saw. Maybe someone who has U2 could post some pictures?
-
I have returned! Can't believe this thread is still going and that it has this many views.
Anyway, just wanted to check in after exactly one year of ownership. Got mine on June 26th last year.
I've gamed for countless hours. Have had ZERO issues. Not a single crash, no problems whatsoever. The 580 has been the best laptop I have ever had. Everything has worked flawlessly and the system is running great. It's been hooked up to my tv through my receiver and it's been a revelation playing all my pc games on my plasma with my surround setup. -
I have the U2. There are two pictures on page 19 on this thread. Can't really see it but I find it works well. The edges hang off a bit but I wouldn't consider it too small. If you have room on your desk, I would go with the U3. In retrospect, I should have gone with the U3.

Hello everyone. I bought Lenovo Y580 yesterday, it looks and works amazingly, except the one thing - the keyboard on the left side is some kind of loose - when you press keys it makes additional rattling noise and moves a little, while on the right side everything works fine. Same issue you can see in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJf93E89pik
I saw some guys here having same issue, but couldn't find how to fix it. Anyone know a solution? Can I fix it by myself? Thanks! -

Could you take some close-up pictures? I can't really see how laptop fits on pad from that far.

Can someone tell me why Google Chrome, Energymanagement.exe, and touchzone.exe is using the 660m by default when it should really be the HD4000. I've changed it in the nVIdia options to use integrated but it still continues to use the dedicated graphics card. Everythings updated. The 660m is running on 320.18 drivers and the HD 4000 is running 9.17.10.2932.
-
Same thing here, but it's just energy and intelligent touch pad
-
I was in the same boat with you guys. Whenever I tried to update the graphic driver, optimus won't work perfectly even with clean uninstall of the previous driver. The only driver that can make things work is GeForce 314.22 Drivers
Guides to perform a clean un-installation of your graphic driver -

You can always send it back for warranty service. I think you can also request Lenovo to send you parts and repair it by yourself.Last edited by a moderator: May 12, 2015

Clean installation is always the best choice for moving from HDD to SSD. There are a lot of guides out there, you can search it
For the wireless card, it is in the white list so you have to flash a unlocked bios to make that work. I am using a dual band 6250 WiFi Mini, the speed is pretty good. You can find more information in the unlock bios thread

I solved this problem, RE: mSATA boot drives on the Y580. May work for those with mSATAs not showing as selectable in the boot order (BIOS) on other Y5x0 models.
Basically I used an OS to SSD migration tool from Paragon. Macriums didn't work.

Crucial said to put into Legacy and use an ISO. I was able to keep the drive in AHCI/UEFI. -
So I finally decided to install speedfan and check my temps. After gaming for 30 minutes my gpu was at 93C. Is this bad...?
-
Well I have wonderful news! I uninstalled the Nvidia drivers and went back to 314.22. Now before I could even boot with the 314.22 drivers my excellent piece of crap of a laptop decided it didn't want to boot form the ODD bay that I had placed the HDD in.
So now I can either place the hard drive back in it's original place: between the GPU and the CPU (great place to destroy a hard drive right?!) and not worry about graphics instability,
OR
I can try and update the drivers back to the latest drivers (hoping I will be able to boot back from the ODD bay), keep my hard drive from frying, AGAIN, yet deal with the dedicated GPU being used unnecessarily.
Great work Lenovo and Nvidia, you guys really pay attention to what the hell you're doing. -
Try to put your HDD back to the original spot, install the 314.22 driver, then put it back to the ODD bay.
-
I did. The problem is that with the 314.22 drivers installed I can't boot from the ODD bay. Actually for a while I couldn't boot from the main spot at all giving me hardware error. I just kept rebooting til it finally recognized the drive again (the main spot). I'm thinking of updating back to the latest drivers because for some reason that allowed me to boot from the ODD bay.
Edit: Well I updated back to the latest drivers, and of course the problems came back, but not only that I can't boot from the ODD bay at all!
Edit 2: So I uninstalled the Nvidia drivers all together and placed the hard drive back in the ODD bay. For some magical reason it seems to boot now. Problem is the Nvidia drivers somehow affect the hard drive booting from the bay. Why is this? I want to install the GPU drivers back but I'm too scared I can't boot from the bay again. I don't know how many times I've moved the harddrive back and forth between bay and original slot........ -
I have the Notepal U Stand for 17" models. Cooler Master: NOTEPAL U STAND
There is a 15" version available that is cheaper but the IdeaPad hangs over the edges on that model. With the 17" model there is a nice centimetre or so of space around the edges.
I have it propped up on one of the slightly elevated settings to accommodate my Razer Blackwidow gaming keyboard in front, which helps to save my hand from heating up when the lappy gets cranking, plus it avoids sweat stains on the palmrest. An ideal solution!
I am really happy with the Notepal! -
Hello and thank you for taking the time to read this post. I would really appreciate ANY advice you can give me regarding the problem I am currently facing with my Lenovo Y580 purchased in October of 2012.
System Specifications:
Lenovo Y580 20994NU
CPU: Intel i7-3630QM
RAM: 8 GB
HDD: 1 TB
SSD: 32 GB
LAN: 100M/1000M
ODD: BRDVD
Display: 15.6 FHD LED
Battery: 6 Cell
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium
Summary of Problem:
I get the error message below after my computers C drive reaches a certain size (depends on the order of install of programs/drivers/updates and the version of Windows 7). I know this is a very general error that usually applies to a specific bad program or driver that causes an error while the computer is booting after its installation. However, I have tried multiple orders of installation of the same programs/drivers/windows updates to ensure that one program is not causing the problem. The reason I am confident that this is not the case is because I use OKR to make backups after every 5 or so programs that I install. Once the error comes up, I revert to the last backup and test various orders of installation without any effectthe error still comes up. In addition, I have tried reverting to several backups prior and installing the supposed culprit programthe error does not come up then.
The computer is running Lenovo RapidDrive. I suspect this is causing this limit. Does or did anyone else have this problem and/or know of a fix?
After the error message, I am including a bit more on what I have tried so far (general steps of prior bad installs and the full detailed steps of one bad install).
Error Message:
Windows Boot Manager
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language setting, and then click Next.
3. Click Repair your computer.
If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.
Status: 0xc000000f
Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.
ENTER=Continue ESC=Exit
Try #1:
1. Start with computer entirely in OEM state (hard drive wiped, then re-imaged using OKR DVDs).
2. Install several GBs of programs (~30 GB)
3. Start to install important windows updates
4. After installing ~15 updates (any 15 on the list), during the restart to finish installing windows updates (when the computer is booting up after shutting down), the computer displays the error message
Try #2:
1. Start from OEM installation
2. Follow this guide detail to replace Windows 7 Home Premium with Windows 7 Ultimate
3. Install RapidDrive
4. Install all drivers (from D drive of computer)
5. Install ~10 GB of programs
6. Install all windows updates (~150 or so)
7. Install ~20 GB of programs
8. During the restart to finish installing Adobe CS6 (when the computer is booting up after shutting down), the computer displays the error message
Detail of Try #2:
*Note some steps have been omitted for privacy reasons
0. Started from OEM installation (recovered from OEM backup on reserved partition)
1. Run the Lenovo Rapid Drive separator tool (USB > RapidDrive > Tool > RapidDriveTool.exe)
2. Reboot (press F2 on this reboot)
3. Disable UEFI in BIOS
4. Make sure Windows 7 Ultimate x64 CD is inserted
5. Let computer startup (will boot into Windows install environment)
6. Now, you should see the SSD as disk 0 with two partitions and you should see 1 tb drive as disk 1 with three partitions (or two in this case) C and Lenovo_Part
7. Now, delete both partitions on SSD, then delete the C drive on the disk 1
8. Point the windows installer to the SSD and hit install
9. Setup will go through, go through initial setup
10. Then install RapidDrive (make sure there is space at beginning of 1 tb drive)
11. Reboot (press F2 on this reboot)
11. Reenable UEFI in BIOS
12. Made all drives using tool in Computer Management
Removed system restore points (Right click on Computer -> Properties -> System protection -> Configure)
Set "Protection" to "Off" for all "Available Drives"
Now looks like:
C_small_part is 100 MB
C_large_part is rest
System_recovery is 19.53 GB
Shrunk C drive to 200 GB
Made D drive to 100 GB
Made E drive to 500 MB
Made F drive to 80 GB
Made H drive to 100 GB
Made I drive to 100 GB
Made J drive to 360 GB + remainder
(Use Computer Management drive tool to make all drives)
13. Install all drivers
For IRST, check install Intel Control Center
After OneKey Theater, changed display setting to "Movie"
For all others, keep default options (but verify through custom installation selection)
Restart computer after every installation
Order: RapidDrive, OneKey Recovery,

Guys, still no solution for 320 driver?
-
Ah I wish I could say the same, mine sometime crash (fortunately not frequent enough to be very annoying) and everytime it boot, it took forever to reach the Bios
Maybe I need to reformat
I installed the beta 326.58 from gaming thread and it works just fine -
Anyone playing The Bureau? What's your settings?
-
Do you know where I could buy DVD faceplate/bezel? I changed mine DVD to HDD but I'd like to have spare bezel just in case (I nearly destroyed mine clips
)
-
I'm still staying at 314 for now.
-
and Quantus should try post a thread in more appropriate section. It doesnt look like Y580 related and you will get better response I think
-
What's wrong with it?
I've been running 320.18 for at least 3 months now without any problems in games. -
Guyz, i think i need your help for my Y580. I try to downgrade from win 8 to win 7, first change BIOS to legacy, boot from cd, but because of my stupidity i formated everything. Nevermind, after succesfully installing win 7 i started installing the drivers from lenovo site. Although wireless didnt want to start. I tried searching google for answers almost all day, download any driver i thought maybe help but always nothing... So i reinstalled windows 8 again ;/ . Now the problem still remain, wireless didnt want to start again... Change BIOS back to UEFI and while booting i get errors like "efi network 0 for ipv4 boot failed" and "efi network 0 for ipv6 boot failed" . Although if i change back to legacy windows boot with no problems. I try to explain much better i could but cuz i am almost 21 hours "playing" with my y580 i think i am kinda exhausted ^^
Any help would be really apreciated , thnx in advance

Heya folks! I am the proud owner of a Y580(refurb from manufacturer). I have read several pages of this thread and just want to clarify a few things about the laptop.
1. The laptop can have 16GB of ram? I have seen a few other threads which say it is so(w/ pics).
2. The HDD in the main slot is or can be 6.0 G/bps SATA III? Either SSD or 7200 rpm.
3. What form factor is the mSATA drive slot? I am not sure whether it is PCIe, Micro, or Mini mSATA.
4. I should be able to put Win 7 on the computer without a problem? I have see this model with Win 7 as the OS. I am just wondering if the drivers will be easy to find.
P.S This thing is very AWESOME! I can play SWTOR on Very High settings without a problem!
P.P.S Win 8 is not so bad actually, but I like the power and security of Win 7 Ultimate. -
1. Yes.
2. Sata III
3. I don't know
4. Yes. Drivers: Drivers and software - IdeaPad Y580 Notebook -
The slot in the Y580 is standard mSATA form factor not mSATA mini (half-size).
-
Well that helps. Thank you.
@Jobine Thank you as well. -
One other question. Since the beast comes with 8GB of memory, what reason would I have to go to 16GB? And would I even notice a difference?
-
8GB is plenty for gaming and for 90% of users. 16GB is only required if you are doing intense multimedia (such as high-end CAD) and or Virtualization.
-
Yea, I figured that maybe getting faster RAM would be beneficial for some things, but 16 is not necessarily needed.
-
What does anyone think about the Intel Wi-Fi/Bluetooth card in the laptop? It seems to be pretty consistent, but yesterday while downloading SWTOR(to fix an issue) it was fluctuating dramatically. It took more than 8 hours to download and install. Or is this a problem with the HDD only being a 5400RPM?
-
Well, i downloaded and Installed Autodesk Inventor (8 gigs down, 19 gigs install) and it was pretty consistent. Maybe it's because of your internet connection.
-
I do have Comcast. However on my desktop, the download and install are rather quicker, even when it fluctuates. But it seems more consistent too. Now I was downloading and installing, so I think maybe it was taking so long cause it was also verifying files? I don't know.
-
Anyone know a way to disable the windows/start menu key next to alt on the left side?
-
I think you have to change something in the registry in order to do that, here's a link:
How to disable the keyboard Windows key -
Looking to finally upgrade and install OS on my mSata drive - is Crucial M4 256gb mSata SSD still the best upgrade? Or is there another brand I should be looking at?
TIA -
Crucial M500 is the updated model. The Plextor M5M is also good.
-
Thx - is this the best mSATA drive for the Y580?
-
There is no "best." They're both fast, reliable drives made by extremely reputable companies. It really boils down to price because you can't go wrong with either. Right now both the 256GB M5M and 240GB M500 are identically priced, so you could go for the Plextor for the extra 16GB of space.brokenchode likes this.

I have a problem when connecting my HDTV through HDMI, every once in a while, when playing video, I see some horizontal lines going from top to bottom and I really don't know if this is a Hardware problem. Anyone has experienced something similar? Tried different cables (from Amazon) and 2 TV's and both show the same problem. Laptop monitor shows no problem so it is something on the HDMI. Tried with both lenovo's and Intel latest drivers.
EDIT: Seems the problem is related to dual display only. If I set HDTV as primary monitor, issue is present in laptop's monitor instead, weird. I think my IGP struggles with 2 monitors at the same time. Has anyone else seen this issue and know how to resolve it?
