I had a Skinomi on my HP Touchpad. As I recall, it's texture was very close to what I have with the DecalRUs, maybe a micron "deeper" but pretty close. I don't know where the POS touchpad is any longer so I can't compare the two right next to each other. I did not use the Touchpad for long but had no problems with the skin during that time. I went for the DecalRUs because it had the touchpad cover. I wish it had the logo cutout but the touchpad cover was more important to me. I don't like the split down the middle on the keyboard cover either with Skinomi. It is one piece with the DecalsRUs. I like the Amazon price on the Skinomi but definitely some trade offs either way. Marry the 2 products together and you might have close to perfection.

Hi, this looks great! Where did you buy this skin? As I would also like to protect the touchpad, since it gets so greasy! I have a cheap Asus 200E and you cannot see the grease on the touchpad or the keyboard, since they are not glossy, go figure. So if I'm thinking about putting this, maybe I should leave the back exposed, since I like the Clementine look of the Yoga? I'm more interested on protecting the touchpad than anything else.

Edit: I fount the DecalRus website. Is this where you bought yours? how much did it cost? thanks.

I actually got it on Amazon which has the carbon fiber skins available for the Y2P (could not find them on the DecalRUs website).. It was $35.95. Here is the link to Amazon page: Amazon.com: Decalrus - Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro "PRO" with 13.3" Touchscreen FULL BODY BLUE Texture Brushed Aluminum skin skins decal for case cover wrap BAYoga2ProFBBlue: Computers & Accessories

I almost got it in the orange color because I wanted the orange machine so bad but decided on the blue instead.

I wonder if there anything that we can apply to the keyboard and the touchpad, so that I could repel the natural grease in our hands instead of putting a protector?

I just found them on the DecalRUs site. You have to go under Textures Carbon Fiber rather than through laptops. $2 cheaper on their site but not sure about shipping costs. Shipping was $4.99 via Amazon. I ordered on Saturday night and it arrived on Wednesday via USPS.

Add in an anti-static guard and you might have a new product idea! I was looking at keyboard protectors but I don't want anything that is going to come off or get rubbed up while in tablet/tent mode.

    Hi

Are many others having a problem connecting a micro hdmi cable to the their yoga 2? When I connect my cable the laptop shuts down. I see another user also reported the same issue and just used another cable which seems to work, but is this something I should be concerned about or consider returning the laptop (still in return period) for even if a different cable works? Don't want the same problem with new cable a few months down the line and be outside return period. Equally so I don't want to return the laptop unless I have to!

    Thanks!

No, it's actually just a fingerprint magnet, I just wipe it off with a microfiber cloth and it looks like new again. =)

You probably read my post as I'm the only one I've seen have the shutdown issue, though I've seen others that have had connectivity issues with some cables. I'm not worried about it because the standard warranty will cover the HDMI connector. I also got the extended 3yr in-home w/accidental coverage just to be safe.

If it does fail at some time in the future, I assume they'll have to replace the motherboard, which could actually be a good thing as it will extend the life of laptop? :)

    Hi Ferrydust,

You are correct the skin surrounding the keyboard area is split in half, which is not the best thing, however I'll most likely remove that portion of the skin as the surface around the keyboard is nice as is. The skinomi screen protector does go on wet so if you're ok with that, then it's a nice screen protector, can't tell that I even have one on after about a day. I just wanted to have the skins on the lid, bottom, and edges as that's where the wear and tear will be (even has skins to cover the hinges =).

Has anyone had to get their Y2P serviced? Any suggestions? One of my fans is making a horrible vibrating noise all of sudden.

I went on their website and it looks like you can only submit a service request for Thinkpad products. Their "authorized service repair" location search only returned on result within 30 miles, and upon calling them it turned out to be a private business with an authorized guy on staff but he only does repairs internally (so I don't know why it showed up on lenovo's results).

I'm guessing the next step is to call Lenovo but don't know what to expect from that, so if anyone has been there and done that I'd like to know if it's going to be worth the hassle (wondering if I should just live with the clanky fan noise).

Thanks Zappa! Yes it was your post I read... I need to check my warranty as I bought in the UK from Amazon, I assume it is probably 1 year. I may investigate extending this with Lenovo if at all possible for peace of mind.

I really hope the new cable I have just ordered works (I ordered the same bluerigger one you mentioned!), because I really don't want to send back - I have been waiting to buy a new laptop for a year and I will go mad having to send it back!

    Cheers

Did you get an email with that part number?

I got the 3 year/in-home w/accidental with P/N 78Y1541 in my email from Lenovo. It is listed on Provantage site PROVANTAGE: Lenovo Services Group

    I couldn't find the P/N you supplied.

I got my 2 yrs accidental directly through Lenovo. The part number is 78Y1537. It is cheaper through ProVantage, wish I would have thought to look there first.

I read in another post that the problem may lie with the mini-HDMI port being recessed and some cables don't reach far enough in to make proper contact. Check the end of the cable carefully and avoid cables that are too "fat" on the mini-end. Another solution is simply to buy an inexpensive mini to normal HDMI adapter and use a normal HDMI cable.

Hey guys, been a while since I've been on the forums, been very happy with my Y2P until I noticed something a few days ago

I noticed my right cooling fan is making a strange noise.. sounds like a soft grinding. They best way to describe it is you know those old fluorescent lights that would make a buzzing sound? That's exactly what it sounds like. At first I just heard it once in a while, but now it's all the time. At first I could sort of shake the notebook or back right corner of the bottom cover and it would stop for a little but now it's all the time. It sort of goes away when you hold the notebook upside down.

Has anyone else noticed this? Thinking about taking it in to best buy (not sure if the i7 model is still in short supply or not) and swapping it for another one. Haven't looked in the bios yet but I read there's some cooling fan settings in there maybe that will help.

This is the EXACT problem I mentioned a few posts ago, except you nailed it much more accurately. Mine started yesterday out of the blue and I was stunned. I've been so careful with it. Now I'm trying to decide what to do. I didn't buy any "extra" warranty or anything, but I feel like the standard warranty should cover it. I just haven't gone down that road yet. Do you think Best Buy would do anything about it if it's past the 15 day return window?

EDIT: BTW, I find it a little curious that we each started having this problem at almost the same time. Did you buy yours originally from Best Buy back on Oct 16th?

When you bought your Y2P did you use your Reward Zone card? If you have over $1500 of purchases in a year that means you are an "Elite Club" Member and you get 30 days for returns, not 15. If you spend over $3500 in a year you get 45 days.

I also believe that Lenovo will replace a defective unit within the first 25 days or so no matter where you bought it.

Somebody mentioned that after a while, the smudges become permanent. Are they correct? That's why I want to put some kind of protection on the touchpad. It looks nasty after a few minutes of use (the keyboard too).

I may have started the Provantage part number meme here. I have the 2 year in home w ADP from Provantage for $112. "Part Number" = 78Y1537
    Try,
    PROVANTAGE.COM: Lenovo 78Y1537 1 Year Depot - 2 Year DEP / ADP

I can definitely confirm this works. Provantage has processed it and when I log into Lenovo Support with my serial number, it shows the warranty as active....

    Upgrade
    Start Date: 2013-09-30
    End Date: 2015-09-29
    Warranty: TQM Active
    Description:
This product has a 2 year limited warranty which includes a LenovoCare w arranty upgrade. This product is entitled to parts, labor and to on-site service. This machine is also entitled to accidental damage coverage. Se rvice is available Monday-Friday, except holidays, with a next business day objective.

Look back for my prior posts ("rblue") and I think you'll see the list of applicable warranty part numbers for the Y2P which I found buried on the Lenovo store site

This one works without issue, a bit more expensive than others, but I bought it after reading similar models having the same issues and not having that issue with this, so I took a leap of faith and it works great.

Forgive me because I'm not familiar with this stuff - I've never paid for extra warranty on anything. But do you think this would allow me to send my Y2P in to get my fan fixed? Or is this level of warranty unnecessary for that?

I'm not happy about a fan sounding like its going bad after less than a month, but I guess I would rather pay $112 to fix it than live it if that's what it comes down to.

FYI - I will be trying to technical support number for Lenovo tomorrow morning, so I may answer some of my questions then. But I am curious as to your thoughts about how important something like this is.

    Hi guys,

I'm seriously considering to change my Samsung 900X3 for this Lenovo beauty but read some critics on a German site that worry me. The following points came back three or four times so I wonder if you can give me your opinion:

    - Keyboard not the usual Lenovo quality, cheap, keys lossy and the board bends a bit in the center
    - Touchpad, not very precise as the cursor moves when you hit on of the buttons
    - Screen, beautiful but scaling seems a problem for programs that are a bit older. In these programs everything is too small and almost unreadable
    - Coolers are not very noisy but kick in more often than other ultra-portables like the Samsung Ativ 9

I don't know Lenovo at all so I'd like your view as the investment is heavy you'll agree...

    Thanks,

    Ton

I am a Y2P owner and don't agree with those criticisms.

Of course there may be the occasional program which shows small fonts but I am running stuff 10 years old (like Access 2003) and it's fine. As far as a "bendy keyboard", well, if you stood on it I suppose but I haven't noticed anything like that while typing. Trackpad works like a trackpad. Mouse will always be better.

As far as projecting to extended monitors you will run into some scaling issues with apps which don't scale well, such as MS Access, but Word and web browsers work fine with the DPI adjustments. I am using this as a standalone laptop/hybrid and not a desktop replacement. My desktop works fine as it is so projecting to extended monitors is not a big deal to me.

But seriously, the eye candy with this thing is exquisite. Hard going back to 1080p after this orgy of visual clarity.

This is the first tablet I have ever owned, including the Surface Pro (which sports a PPI of 207) where I have been COMPLETELY SATISFIED with the quality, clarity and smoothness of screen fonts.

That is saying a lot when one considers that MS utterly destroyed their font-smoothing in Windows 8.1. Cleartype was never great, but it was galaxies superior to the hot mess we have now. Office 2013 on my 22 inch desktop monitor looks like something from 1992. Truly amazed how that ever made it past focus-testing (assuming MS actually does focus testing, which is in some doubt).

Nevertheless, the shear brute force of 3200 x 1800 (276 PPI) overwhelms even Microsoft's best efforts to destroy my enjoyment of their products. I can actually use Word 2013 on my Y2P without wanting to stab myself in the eyes to stop the pain.

Sure there is a dandelion or two in this field of roses (note the clever yellow reference there) but this is a first-gen device at this resolution so I'm happy.

P.S., Did I mention I paid only $899 USD for this miraculous bit of kit at Bestbuy on sale? I keep expecting them to suddenly realize they made a mistake and send the local marshal out to arrest me.

Agree. Had mine 9 days so far, using it all day at work and all night at home. Keyboard works and feels very well, better than the Retina MacBook Pro I replaced with this. I have no issues with it bending in the center.

Trackpad - my only problem with the trackpad is because at the office I have a USB 3 port replicator I use for an external monitor, keyboard, and the Logitech Windows 8 wireless touchpad and the laptop sits on a stand next to my 25" monitor. So when I get home and turn it on, the regular trackpad settings are back to default speed so I always have to go to the control panel and crank up the speed a bit so I don't have to drag four or five times to cross the screen. But that's more an issue with Logitech's software.

I have some things that scale horribly, even when moved to an external monitor. But I'm learning workarounds and there's not many of them. Most things really impress me how well they go from the QHD resolution on this screen to something scaled to look the same size then on the 1920x1080 screen. It really does a great job with that transition.

I barely hear my fans even when I'm muxing MKV's and such. Most of the time they don't turn on at all with my daily use.

I don't notice the screen improvement as much as others here since I have been using a Retina MacBook Pro since the summer of 2012, so for me the clarity, font smoothness, etc, is something I've already become accustomed to. But everyone who sees this is just blown away.

It's thin and light for something with this much power, and a tablet to boot. If it had an active digitizer it'd be about the perfect machine for me.

I too wish it had a digitizer; however, I bought the Surface Pro for the digitizer then rarely used it. It's one of those things I always desire then rarely need once I have it. My handwriting is simply too horrendous to be of value as a note-taking medium. Nevertheless I did purchase a Notier V2 stylus which seems well-reviewed for those odd times I need to jot notes silently in a meeting or draw a diagram.

Right - no "fix" has yet been introduced to manufacturing, but it will be soon.

It appears that our engineering has taken longer because they have done more than just fix the power manager state change glitch. It appears they have included "further optimizations". I've seen this update demonstrated on a Yoga 2 Pro this afternoon and have been provided a summary explanation which I'll relay here.

    The solution appears two part:

    1) A BIOS update that updates the embedded controller to improve the LCD's rendering of yellow ... coupled with...

    2) An updated versions of energy management that takes advantage of the new BIOS capabilities.

When released to the web, the BIOS will need to be updated first, and then the energy manager. Both will be made available on the web, probably early next week. Final testing is underway, and there are some packaging and doccumentation details to complete. I think it will go to the web team by end of this week.

With this change, it isn't locked in performance mode so I don't think battery run times will be significantly affected.

This doesn't involve changes to the video drivers, so I think we avoid that concern raised above. With regard to other OS's, Lenovo isn't providing formal support for those anyway, so this is business as usual in how we would address any other issue with the product as shipped.

I know there will be more questions... I've shared what I know at this point.

    Mark

so by the sounds of that quote, there is no issues with the yoga 2 pros? I really want a 512gb ssd drive ultrabook. the options looked to be sony vaio pro 13 and this, yoga 2 pro. if this color thing is sorted then I guess I'll go yoga 2.

does anyone have any thoughts on yogas ssds, can you upgrade it yourself? save on funds?
    cheers

Awesome! Exactly what I was hoping for, a BIOS fix!
And that solves the battery life issue as well. Well worth the wait.

I bet all of you who returned yours are regretting it now!

I think the solution mark is providing is the temporary software revision with power management set to high embedded into bios. I will be curious what impact this will have on battery life.

Anyone else still showing ship date of 12/24? My original ship date was 11/06, then moved to 11/18, and again moved to 12/24...
I was under the impression that the ship dates were inaccurate and were to be updated on Monday 11/11? No change for me.

How could you possibly get that out of what Mark wrote? There is no way that Lenovo is going to set the laptop so that it can only be run in High Performance mode.

Agreed. What Mark wrote is pretty much the opposite of what Tron2 got out of it.

Implying the LCD screen controller will improved. Wait, that's not even implying - that's exactly what he's saying.
implying there are additional improvements around energy management - IMPROVEMENT that takes ADVANTAGE of the new BIOS capabilities - permanently fixing the brightness to its highest is not an improvement that takes advantage of anything - that's a severe crippling.

Even if Mark's post wasn't as clear as it is, turning screen brightness to high is barely acceptable as a temporary solution; making it a permanent condition just wouldn't fly.

    @ noit,

Friend it appears you are blaming Lenovo for your inability to comprehend the fix they will be providing.

Just do this, assuming you actually own a Y2P and are not just trolling:

    1) Wait for the fix to be announced.
    2) Follow the installation instructions.

That way you won't have to understand it, it will just work.
