Yes, it's different, but it's also cheaper. But the most important thing is that it's already prebuilt, which means you don't have to wait over a month for it to ship, unlike if you buy it from Lenovo.com. Both the CPU and RAM are the same. It should be brand new, otherwise it would be labeled as a refurb on the site.

Good point. My only sticking point is the lack of a 7200RPM HD. I guess I'm not in a position to argue too much given how Lenovo has royally screwed me :/

Bro...the difference is MINIMAL, plus you can upgrade it anytime. The fact is that Buy.com has it cheaper and NO WAIT, and you don't have to sit-and-listen to Lenovo music on the phone for hours before someone can assist you. The End...

After ordering from Buy.com, I received notification from Lenovo that the laptop had shipped. I cancelled the Buy.com order because the 7200RPM HD was a big point for me (Vista is a resource beast and speed/read times become important). Anyway, I plan on calling Lenovo and demanding a $200 price break ($100 for each month of delays) or for some peripherals (external CD/DVD drive perhaps?) and was wondering if any of you had any pointers on how to approach this; also, is 1-866-42-THINK the number to use, or is there a better/easier number to use to get through to them? Thanks.

well, she will ask u what kind of compensation u looking for. I tried to ask two things. ($100 off and a free case) however, she said she can only file one compensation, which means I cannot get two things at once. By the way, she claims they will email me back and they still have not :(

I was just about to cancel from lenovo and order it from somewhere else, but it is just shipped this morning. You don't need to order from buy.com. If you search in pricegrabber for the same model, you'll have a dozen of providers that sell the x61 with the same configuration of buy.com but even lower price. Buy.com is of course one of them in the list. Some customer review of these dealers are decent. They may be good choices. I guess I've lost $100 for not choosing those dealers.

Well, the X61 finally arrived, today (July 24) after I ordered it on June 1st. It's really been something dealing with these folks. It wasn't until I called the U.S.-based 877 number in my email, really ripped into these folks, and asked them what the holdup was that it shipped. But truthfully, I doubt anyone I spoke with did anything -- like others who received their units faster, it just came when it came. I guess the moral is if you wait long enough, it will come :/

Is it just me, or does the palmrest on the X61 get very, very hot? I have an X31 and an X60 and never remember the palmrest heating up in this way. Anyone else experience this problem?

My X61 finally arrived. Pretty solid machine, but the buzzy adapter is really annoy, I'll complain to lenovo and ask for another adapter definitely. Moreover, the internal microphone is removed, which I haven't expected, leaving only mic hole on the machine ( but padded inside ).

Here is the delivery info, pretty fast. But lenovo don't allow personal pickup unless you call lenovo to request UPS the pick up for you. I listened an hour's terrible music on the phone before reaching a representative.

Just a week after I spent $40 purchasing a 1gig crucial memory from Buy.com (applying Google $10 off) to upgrade my baby, Frys.com has it for $25. You guys hurry up and get one if you have the second slot vacant :D.

About the buzzing adapter, IBM sent me a replacement with overnight shipping. I can now use my X61 without having to tolerate the irritating static buzz. Anyway, does anyone bother to send the defective one back, or just keep them as a spare like me?

mine shipped this morning, so i don't yet have shipping information. on the order status, it shows 'ups ground'. could they have shipped it to me overnight even if it says that?

edit: shipping information now shows Express shipping, expected three days after shipment.

Just to throw another curve ball into this discussion, my X61s shipped today, on the ORIGINAL ESTIMATE SHIP DATE.

Honest. I know, it's a shocker, but I'm sure it happens to others too, due to the law of large numbers if not for anything else.

Mine was pretty cheap so I don't think that's the reason. Lenovo probably didn't have supply for the part(s) for your laptop, hence the long delay.

Ordered today, est. ship date 8/15/07.

I am a bit disturbed by my system readout on the order status page, however. Rundown: I ordered, using the Visa cardholders' discount, an X61 with T7300 processor (2.0GHz, 4MB L2), w/ 2GB RAM (2 DIMM), 100 GB HD (7200 rpm), 8-cell battery, bluetooth. All is well until I read the order page online, where it lists:

    1 7675CTO LENOVO THINKPAD X61 7675 - NO CPU - 12.1" TFT $1,333.80

    And below, it lists:

    Processor No CPU

And on the component list, no mention of CPU.

1 42V8012 SBB MS WIN VISTA HOME BASIC $0.00

    Qty Component Description Cost
    1 41C9340 LENOVO THINKPAD PROTECTION EXTENDED SERVICE AGREEMENT - 3 YEARS $143.65

I'm not familiar with Lenovo's processing method or terminology, but there is no mention of the Core Duo processor I configured anywhere on my order, on the e-mail or the order tracking page. I am assuming, of course, this is a common problem? Because surely there must be a processor in there somewhere.

Maybe I be stupid. But knowing Lenovo's mixed track record in order processing and shipment times, I'm not taking any chances.

I have an X60s and (2) X61s machines that all have microphones. Are you really really sure that you don't have a mic?! Go into audio properties -> recording and check it out.

I've been fooling around with the voice recognition software included in Vista...pretty wild!

OH.... I found I just didn't turn on the mic boost. It has to be turned on to record something otherwise nearly mute. The recording quality is influenced too much by the buzzy adapter. Thanks for the prompt.

I ordered mine on Jun 26th I think, the shipping date was pushed back twice to July 26th. At 1 am on the 27th I got an e-mail saying it had been delayed again and I had to approve it or it would be canceled, I then get an e-mail at 8am saying it had shipped. Shipped from China and estimated delivery date is the 30th. Three day shipping from China is impressive, one month extra wait isn't

Mine is pretty tight. I've owned three thinkpads before. For this one, I can't open the screen using only one hand without the bottom moving away from the desktop. I think there are few notebook's hinge as tight and steady as thinkpad's. That's one of the main reasons I like it.

They do for an extra charge, but unless you paid for it specifically, they won't.

They won't even let you pick up your package at the center on the day it arrives until they have tried delivering to you first. My laptop arrived at my local center on the night between friday and saturday, and I called and asked if I could interrupt the delivery process and come pick it up instead, and was told exactly that. I also asked if I could pay a charge to have it delivered saturday or sunday, and was told that, again, they cannot interrupt the process.

If you know ahead of time you want to pick it up, you can call and have them put a hold on it.

The morning of, or day of, it's too late to stop delivery attempt.

null84: mine's at the same spot (blah blah has been requested blah blah). it says "in transit - on time", though. i guess a few more days of waiting is nothing compared to the initial 2 1/2 months
