LG P330 review by Natadiem

How LG managed to make such a bad decision when picking the network card for this laptop is beyond me. It provides no consistency and is pretty slow on top of that. Recently problems that were only present when using WPA2 shifted over to only being present when using WPA. My connection seems more responsive when using WPA2, so that hadn't been a problem if it wasn't was for the fact that it makes the connection on other laptops unusable. The end result is that I finally went ahead and bought a Killer 1103 card along with an extra antenna from Tyco. Looking forward to what will hopefully be a stable and fast connection.

Just thought I'd bump this back up in case anyone has an answer.

 

Hello, I am just passing by to say that I am still in love with this notebook

1 month and 20 days passed since I have been starting to use it and it's still very positive experience.

I don't have problem with my WIFI card, maybe the signal is not maximum but it doesn't really affect me.

I am playing Diablo III beta all the time (the game in online) and I didn't notice any problem...Even at 10 meters from my wifi point => no problem.

I have been playing many other games and I didn't have any problem to play all of them at almost max settings.
Cooling is still stellar and it's not noisy at all...

It was complicated to get but it's my best notebook purchase even...and god I bought a lot of notebooks among these years.

Why LG doesn't release this lappy in the west is beyond me

 

So far only Intel SSD's with Intel controller work with this lappy?

 

Natadiem: Have you played with this lappy BF3 or some else heavy game? I mean what are those temps with your cpu/gpu and will you keep some kind of oc setup with gpu??
When I play example BF3 30min-60min, it is so warm/hot under my left hand.. Temps on cpu are 94c and gpu about 75c.
Model ue40k. Still im very happy with this lappy

 

Just in case anyone should think that I'm not happy with mine, I'll have to stress that I'm still super happy with it. The reason the network card bugs me a lot is because it has been the one true weakness for me. Why it hasn't been released anywhere else than Korea is beyond me as well. How it manages to perform far better than most laptops of it's size while maintaining cool, quiet and slim is extremely impressive. Not to mention I'm completely in love with it's design. About Diablo 3: you didn't do anything else than ticking the beta boxes at Battle.net, did you? Really want to give it a try as well.

 

I was playing BF3 26min auto graphic setup there and temps are cpu: 91c gpu: 77c. It is so warm under left hand. How about you guys? I have non OC

 

Which model do you have? 40K or the 70K?

I got a 128gb mydigitassd msata drive to work as a boot drive. I believe it has a phison controller.

 

I just tried to install an OCZ SSD (480 GB Vertex 3) and an OCZ msata SSD (120 GB Nocti). The msata SSD was recognized in the BIOS, but the Vertex 3 SSD was not recognized in the BIOS.

 

Yes I just ticked the box in battlenet. I think their selection is totally random.
I tried the patch 13 yesterday and the game got so interesting.
Among all the games I played I didn't try battlefield 3. I don't like COD, battlefield kind of games.
I really don't add any cooling to my notebook, everything is going fine. My GPU never reached 90 degrees so far.
Maybe there is a setting in battlefield which is pushing a bit too hard the GPU...

 

he wrote that the gpu was max 77 degress and the cpu over 90 degress

 

I also put in a 120 GB Nocti mSata SSD as the boot drive and had no problems with that. Replacing the 2.5'' HD with a mSata SSD makes the laptop almost 100g lighter.
I have two problems with my UE40K. The trackpad sometimes stops working with the synaptics driver. It's like something would get stuck on the trackpad and only a reboot fixes it. I worked around this temporarily by uninstalling the synaptics driver and just using windows7's default ps2 mouse driver. This works, but I loose all gestures and configurability. Has anyone the same issue and maybe found a better solution?
The other issue is that the windows login screen where you enter the password sometimes gets stuck for almost a minute. I guess it's the network card trying to connect to something as it doesn't happen while I'm on the road.

My overall P330 impression (coming from a Acer TimelineX 3830).

+ Light (1.62 kg with msata ssd only)
+ Small
+ Fast CPU, no throttling problem
+ Acceptable GPU speed
+ Looks nice (I especially like the korean extra characters)

- Trackpad (even when it works I don't like it)
- Unnecessarily tricky to open the case
- Keyboard is hard to use in the dark (no backlight, slim characters)
- I'd prefer a more standard BIOS that maybe would recognize all SSDs?
- Optimus can be a PITA (well that's probably NVIDIAs fault)

 

I posted this some time ago: people listen up after lots of sniffing around ive actually discovered the touchpad isn't synaptics or alps. its elantech! after installing latest elantech drivers (ElanTech Touchpad Driver v 8.0.7.0 - TechSpot Drivers) i finally got that sweet 2 finger scroll, pinch to zoom, rotate gesture and lots more. owyeah

This driver makes it a pretty good touchpad.

The (lack of decent) drivers for this wireless card however is a bigger problem for me; random disconnecting, slow speeds, .. What driver are you guys using?

That said this definately is the best notebook I ever bought.

I want that code too, if you have those yet Btw, its not so big problem that it goes too hot under my hand, more important is that this machine doesnt throttle cpu/gpu, what is big plus Either any artifacts on gpu when Oc. Is there anybody tested biggest stable oc setups on gpu?
And have you guys tried to replace cpu or cpu/gpu thermal compound for lower temperatures??

Hmm I saw your post about the elantech driver and tried that as well. However I saw no difference to the synaptics driver. It seems to me it is the same driver, it even has the same icons and gui. The synaptics driver worked well for me feature-wise, but after a few minutes the touchpad just would cease to work.
I really think the touchpad is just mechanically broken on my device.

On the upside I have not have any real issues with the wireless (besides slow startup) and am using the drivers I got from LG Smart Update.

OK, I am freaking out. I got home from.work today, went to turn my p330 on and nothing happened. The light next to the button went on for about 5 seconds and I can hear, the HD spinning then a click noise happens (I presume it is the HD turning itself off) and it turns it self off. I was using it fine last night and it wasn't moved since I last used it (I turned it off when I.finished it). It was not plugged in, so it couldn't have been a electric spike. Can anyone help me out understand what's going on? Also what's the deal with the warranty? How could I claimed in case the lappy became a paper weight??

 

I also want to add that the first light from.the left at the front of the lappy turns on and the third one from.the left keeps blinking and just before it powers off, the light keeps blinking bit starts to dim. Also, a couple of times it stayed on for a little longer and even.the fan turned on but it still died. But the screen always stayed turned off.

 

sounds like a mainboard failure! in anyways try to
contact the lg customer support or write your problem on the lg facebook fanpage

 

Have you tried unplugging, pulling the battery (i.e. no power to the laptop at all) and leaving it sit for an hour or so and then try booting again?

Also if you do try contacting LG please report back, Im sure lots of us will be interested to see how that pans out.

Here you go. This is the latest driver (3.2.8.0) obtained from LG Intelligent Update.

 

I sent an email to LG and now I am just waiting for a reply. I will probably register my lappy when I get home too (should've done it already honestly).

Mrfurby2u, I removed the battery a few times and tried, but never for 1 hour. I removed the battery from the lappy and came to work, so I we'll see what happens when I get home. What would leaving the lappy without a battery for more than an hour do?

 

I got home and unfortunately the problem didn't magically disapeared (I was hoping it would've, since it seems it magically appeared). I haven't heard anything form LG and the p330 doesn't appear on the lg warranty list. Anyone got any suggestions?

 

I just tried to turn it on again and it worked! I am actually typing this on it. Pretty happy about.

So this brings up the question, what caused such a bizarre malfunction? At the moment I am thinking perhaps something to do with the ssd. Perhaps a loose cable or something like that. I will open it this weekend (never done it before) and check it out. Anything I should be looking for? Perhaps one of you guys have experienced something like that before.

 

I'm probably a bit late to tell you guys about this, but I had some problems trying to remove my recovery partitions. In fact, I gave up on it for the time being. I tried to remove them without removing my OS using two different tools outside of the OS and my laptop would freeze completely. Couldn't even power it off unless I unplugged the power cord and held down the power button immediately after I had reinserted it. I haven't noticed anything similar with normal usage.

 

Is there any BIOS update for LG P330?

 

I suppose we would have to head over to lge.co.kr to see if there is a new bios available. Problem is that we wouldn't get far without knowing any Korean. Only person I know of that speak Korean on these forums is the kitty mod (a.k.a. Ryan).

 

Yeah, there's still no BIOS update. I wish the LG people update the BIOS to make P330 recognize my OCZ SSD...

just to bring up the LG Guarantee talk, I have asked on the official german LG forum if I have guarantee and they told me I have a 1 year guarantee even in germany but that fixing the notebook could take longer due to parts that have to be ordered from korea

 

That's great to know. I was not aware of an LG forum, but I'll try to find it. I also got a reply from the LG website and they seem to be really cool about it. This is their reply:

"We regret to hear of the issues you have had with your LG laptop.

We ask that you contact us again with the date of purchase, the model number and the serial number and one of our consultants will be able to book the unit in for repair."

That is not a confirmation, but at least they responded, since I actually wrote on my original message that I bought it from Korea.

Why can't someone else with a stronger presence in USA make something like this!? Asus makes many thin and light laptops but they never put a decent dedicated GPU in them, and HD 3000 stinks if you want to game with anything.

It sucks because the issue is still present. When I got home yesterday, the laptop wasn't working and about 5 minutes ago, it started working again.

 

I wouldnt give up that fast!

Try to look for an LG facebook page or any public domain like a Forum where you can complain!

I'm pretty sure this laptop DOES come with 1 year of international warranty. When my friend bought it from Korea I specifically asked her to inquire about the warranty, and it should be international.

 

No, not yet. I think the USPS tracking is broken. *sigh* The network card in it now refuses to work in about half of the spots in my house, so waiting is starting to become a trial of patience.

EDIT: Got it in the mail today. Now I'm just waiting for the antenna.

 

Awesome! Are you gonna install 2 or 3 antennas? I heard that installing the 3rd one is kinda tough...

 

I'll keep the two that's already in it and install a third one. The antenna was sent a few days before the network card since the network card was on back order. Hope it didn't get lost in the mail. :/

 

Yeah, I am pretty sure it does come with international warranty it too. I got another email from them telling me to contact the costumer centre to organize repairs. I will contact them on Thursday and see what happens. I am hoping that it all works out.

 

Hey guys I have a question regarding Nvidia drivers:

I just upgraded to 295.73 and the installing worked fine (had to use the modified inf but that's normal).

Thing is, after I installed this new driver my LG smart indicator (sidebar gadget stopped working). I dunno how many of you actually use this gadget but have any of you experienced this?

Also my LG intelligent update isnt opening. It says 'Execution is restricted to administrator groups or user only', then closes.

Anyone know how to fix these..?
