No prob...this thread wanders occasionally usually in fact ;) My point was you'll never have a 'white' desktop...you'll have panels, windows coming and going, etc. and with that the gpu working...just doesn't make sense unless maybe you are talking in 'absolutes' which doesn't apply to desktop usage.

As Zephyrus mentioned, it's hardware, so I don't think it makes sense.

But regardless of that discussion, nice desktop! :D

Even if it did make sense, it couldn't be applied in use unless you wanted to sit and stare at a white desktop....no panels or menu's, no windows open, nada.....lol

And that difference will be so minimal it won't matter. Just like people tweaking their kernel for 4 hours in Gentoo to get that 2nanosecond faster performance.

And just so you know, the voltage in your wall plug socket is heavily reduced for laptop usage. So the saving is even less.

That said, it makes no physical, electrical, coding sense for a laptop to consume more power with a white background.

What's really effective is just to turn off the screen when you're just listening to music or otherwise not looking at the screen for a few minutes.

Can't quite see the windows, but I think I like the theme. The background would probably annoy me, though. :p

Looks hot, whatever it is. But I thought you said you were using Fedora now?

Anyways... researching a little on Fedora has got me interested, although I want to try and get Arch working first. I just need to figure out how to get my wireless drivers as part of the install.

    Excellente, muy bueno, muchacha..... :D

    @Pix
Yes, I gave Fedora a fair shot (I like it), now I'm giving openSUSE 11.2 x64 (gnome) a fair shot....I like it this time around, it seems faster than Fedora on my machine, a little snappier. OOo Writer has not crashed as I think Novell hacked it somehow I'm hoping, or at least they claim.

Suse used to be dog slow in the past...this one is NOT, I like better than so far....but we'll see...it's the Lizard against the Hat..... :p

OpenSUSE is winning the battle so far....unless something blows up.... ;)

It seems like I have quite different tastes from the rest of the Linux crowd here...

The "clear" screen shot is something I never actually see, but the background is just there for, well, I don't know why.

The "cluttered" screen shot is especially cluttered (I rarely have Firefox actually combined with other windows) just to give an idea.

As 'archey' indicates, I am running DWM with no desktop environment (I have no idea how you guys can stand those things really). dmenu opens everything for me for the most part. The information at the top is the familiar conky in a less familiar context (specifically it is a cli version of conky outputting to xsetroot -name "conky-info").

I am sure you guys will hate it!

No, don't hate...many here are minimalists, Archers too  I actually work and make my living from my desktop, so automation and DE tools are essential for me. I overcome any bloat with hardware (money haha).

    Looks nice....keep the screenies a comin! :D

Well, I make my living from my computer as well...what essential automation and DE tools are you speaking of? I am not asking this as a rude question, but as an honest question. I definitely do not mean to argue anything, if the tools work for you, that is great. I just want to know what I might be missing...

I do not use DWM simply because it uses (significantly) less resources. I cannot imagine not using a tiling windows manager for work. I constantly have to read a document, and type in a window simultaneously, sometimes two or three terminal windows (where tabs would not be sufficient because I need to see the output). I could never go back to floating windows for work. Although, my work is mathematics, which might be quite a bit different from others.

    Thanks,
    Ryan

I'm a Certified Public Accountant, and get paid for my time. Ease of use and speed is key. Automated back ups and sync'ing across laptops, scanning, email, doc's, VM, tax, accounting and word processing....spreed sheets, time billing program/invoicing always running in the background....most of this is usually going on at once. you might not be missing anything, but I would be missing what most of the business world would miss in similar work environment. Fortunately, I've been able to replace Windows with Linux. A fast OS installer with firmware ready to go is required by me.

I guess you're gonna tell me how you can do all that with Arch/DVM, but I'd like like to know what "I'm" missing with regard to your particular set up?

Just asking an honest question....thanks ;)

Haha, first, I just want to make sure you know I am really light-hearted in this. I of course realize Arch/DWM is not for everyone. I think you are also being light-hearted, I just wanted to make sure...

How easy or quick a setup is is quite subjective. Certainly without the desire to work a bit to get over a hump, the desktop environments offer you basically everything you need. Where we differ (I think) is that I like working hard in the beginning to set up my environment exactly as I want it from scratch, where you (I think) feel like this is a waste of time.

All of the things you have described are of course possible in all Linux distributions and seem to me to have nothing to do with the DE.

As far as a fast OS setup, base Arch will of course install faster than Ubuntu, but this is without anything on it.

What I think you are missing is the clean and minimalist configuration and a clean system (organized).

Sorry if I went too far! We should all rejoice in not using Windows

    Thanks,
    Ryan

Absolutely...I don't think setting up Arch (or linux from scratch, etc) is a waste of time if you like having everything just so or more minimally tailored to your hardware, but rather to me more like reinventing the wheel. So what if I have a bunch of static libraries laying around on my HD "just in case" I may add a piece of hardware I'll never add. It doesn't affect stability or speed anymore IMO. HD space is cheaper these days, and 'short stroking' the disk doesn't matter much anymore...(LOL) I don't think with modern hardware, one will benefit much if at all from doing things like that if you use modern hardware. However, that's part of the 'fun' of using linux. When I started working from my linux machine, I became more in favor of a more automated distro. And a DE where I don't have to manually update the menu everytime I change something. So there's a different perspective on minimalism. Less isn't always "more" The problem with Windows isn't 'that', it's all the frakking daemons, 60-100, that are running.

But yes, rejoice in alternative OS's....I'll use whatever I think to be the best OS out there, whether I have to pay for it or not. No one ever accused me of being an ideologue  :D

I got your gist...just makes for some interesting posts, kinda like trying to argue religion or politics. I don't think for a second there's any perceived 'elitism' in using a minimalist oriented distro :p

i love linux. because im going to control several strange pieces of audio software with midi controllers in realtime to the millisecond, running in and out of each other, etc...
and honestly, i dont mind that i have to work and compile and generally screw around a whole lot to make it work. i feel like thats the composition part of it.
anyway, ill upload a new screenie once i figure that out. for now:

KDE 4.4 is out. Anyone fancy a try on that and tell out how it is? :D

For KDE, in 4.X, is odd number X the stable release or even number X the stable one?
