Nice!!
I still like mine better though.
-
Ok, other than the panel and my scanner icon it put on the desktop, this is pretty much a stock Mandriva 2008 One Spring (just released!) snapshot....really, REally, like this release....it bodes well of the future....short review in another thread, this date. I've always had an affinity for Mandriva, but this release has reeled me in this time around:

Very nice! Although I like XFCE better.
-
I just can't say enough how this release has impressed me....and I'm a guy that get's let down easy....even the stock theme'ing is pretty nice. Just realized I've got to go change my dictionary language....lol
-
Yeah the theming looks very nice. I did some simple custom theming to my XFCE desktop, and now it looks and works exactly how I like it.
-
I'm pretty big on XFCE...to me it's a cleaner gnome....however you can find posts around here from me saying I'm a gnome guy all the way down the line....wow, has that changed....KDE, I just like being able to tweak the living heck of it.
-
I like Gnome, but I have tried them all.
Gnome is clean, fast & powerful to me. -
Ive only used Gnome and KDE
KDE was faster by a small margin
but I really prefer Gnome because its so easy to modify
Makes using your computer much more fun when you can change it up once a week! -
Actually, Gnome is very tweakable & you can speed it up a lot, but for the newb KDE is easier to use.
-
if you want something really fast, try kdemod (only for archlinux)...its full featured kde but on steroids.
-
Any tuts on speeding up Gnome?
im full set in with all my files on ubuntu right now and my ext HDD is all the way in the garage so i dont feel like switching to arch linux =p -
It will be worth it in the end.
-
hahah
well it could be worth it. . .
but i think ill wait till i get my laptop to try anything else new as i want to have a stable computer until i get the laptop so i dont have to constantly reinstall an os when trying to dual boot
Thomas never made the dual boot thread!!
-
It's coming, don't worry
Hmmm, I'm thinking of ripping off Sam's Mac Switchers Guide
-
lol well the tips i found on google are about the same and not really helpfull but hey i dont really mind it being slow if it looks good =]
and ripping someone off!
THATS TERRIBLE
haha jk idc -
Well, we're linux users, we rip people off.
Open source FTW!!!!!!!!!!
-
Ah well i cant deny that one
but im pretty sure Linux was the first os with a gui
i might be mistaken but i read that somewhere
so WINDOWS RIPPED US OFF!
anyone else ever find it funny they are called windows
and their OS uses miniature windows to display stuff? -
I'm not sure on that, but it was(unix as it was at the time) was fast, but it's requirements were high.
-
No. (But I like your enthusiasm.) To me, the first real GUI debuted in 1973/4 with the Xerox Alto experimentally, and its commercial release of the Xerox 8010 (Star) in 1981. Apple developed their first GUI based OS for Lisa in 1983, (from a project beginning in 1979), and then the much more commercially successful Macintosh in 1984. Microsoft released Windows 1.01 (the first GA release), in 1984 too. The X Window System was first released in 1984, and is the windows system that is used in most Linux distros today. This project again was produced as a result from earlier projects, most notably the W Window System.
-
Ahh I forgot about those
-
i tried my best to prove it i swear -
Well, the x windows system is still used on Mac OS X & all distros with a GUI.
So we(unix/linux) can claim the oldest surviving GUI. -
I noticed that nobody seems to be using conky ( http://conky.sourceforge.net/). What's up with that?

I use a screenlet for that
P.S. Compiz Rocks, way better then Vista's effects.Attached Files:

Looks pretty nice.
-
Hmm, Fluxbox is interesting......
Also, can I install Wubi if I already have a dual boot setup?
I'd like to add Kubuntu.... -
OS: Ubuntu 8.04 "Hardy Heron"
GTK: Elegant Mine
Wall: CrunchyBranch
Icons: Ubuntu OS
Apps: Conky, Screenlets, Compiz -
Nice looks pretty sexy.
Is the update out yet for upgrading or is it still only a beta? -
still beta although it wont be in 10 days. 4/24 is the final release date. An RC should be comin out later this week. I'm lovin this release so far, by far is the best release of ubuntu I've used and I've been using it on and off since edgy (four versions ago) and now with hardy I've all but left my windows partition unbooted except for occasional gaming and a weekly school assignment i need Office 07 for.
-
Slice.
-
Very nice! I'm in the process of tricking out my desktop, will post shortly.
-
Thanks, recently I've been on a desktop customization kick that came right after my "(try to) use command line for everything" kick. lol
-
...and, I'm still on Mandriva....tried Sabayon, man, the cool factor was there though...improved over 3.4....working on tweaking out the desktop finally, work has been in the way the last few.
-
Nice desktop zach382!
-
I found my 'gotcha' with Mandriva 2008.1....there is an incompatibility with Virtual Box non-free even though the OSE version is in the repo's. I think this is the case....I guess I will be posting a Kubuntu desktop soon
This version is good enought to give it one more shot...machine hangs during guest OS harddrive format.
-
theZoid, have you tried Linux Mint KDE? I love what they've done with it.
-
Yes, actually Mint KDE CE, Kubuntu and Mandriva 2008.1 are my favorites that will work for me (because I work out of my home), Mandriva head and shoulders above the others (for my hardware, speed, personal tastes, etc)
-
I'm going to install KDE on Ubuntu soon, but keeping Gnome. Has anyone done that yet?
-
Never tried is it hard to do?
and how would you control which one it loads? -
F10 while your at the login screen.
-
Oh nifty I might just try that
gonna check if can i get XFCE for ubuntu =P -
You can, I think it's this in a terminal:
Code:sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
-
I'll Test it out and let you know how it goes
It should dl all the dependencies and such also right? -
Yup, that's a small download there, it's like less then 100MBs.
-
Yay updating don't break Hardy anymore! By the way does anybody know where I can find the "designed for ubuntu" sticker?
-
No, but i surely want one to put over my designed for vista sticker when i get my m1530 =]
-
Here ya go dude: http://system76.com/article_info.php?articles_id=9
Free (pay for a stamp) sticker.
-
RIGHTEOUS!!!! Dude, thanks!
