Ok, other than the panel and my scanner icon it put on the desktop, this is pretty much a stock Mandriva 2008 One Spring (just released!) snapshot....really, REally, like this release....it bodes well of the future....short review in another thread, this date. I've always had an affinity for Mandriva, but this release has reeled me in this time around:

Yeah the theming looks very nice. I did some simple custom theming to my XFCE desktop, and now it looks and works exactly how I like it.

I'm pretty big on XFCE...to me it's a cleaner gnome....however you can find posts around here from me saying I'm a gnome guy all the way down the line....wow, has that changed....KDE, I just like being able to tweak the living heck of it.

Ive only used Gnome and KDE
KDE was faster by a small margin
but I really prefer Gnome because its so easy to modify
Makes using your computer much more fun when you can change it up once a week!

Actually, Gnome is very tweakable & you can speed it up a lot, but for the newb KDE is easier to use.

if you want something really fast, try kdemod (only for archlinux)...its full featured kde but on steroids.

Ah well i cant deny that one
but im pretty sure Linux was the first os with a gui
i might be mistaken but i read that somewhere
    so WINDOWS RIPPED US OFF!

anyone else ever find it funny they are called windows
and their OS uses miniature windows to display stuff?

I'm not sure on that, but it was(unix as it was at the time) was fast, but it's requirements were high.

No. (But I like your enthusiasm.) To me, the first real GUI debuted in 1973/4 with the Xerox Alto experimentally, and its commercial release of the Xerox 8010 (Star) in 1981. Apple developed their first GUI based OS for Lisa in 1983, (from a project beginning in 1979), and then the much more commercially successful Macintosh in 1984. Microsoft released Windows 1.01 (the first GA release), in 1984 too. The X Window System was first released in 1984, and is the windows system that is used in most Linux distros today. This project again was produced as a result from earlier projects, most notably the W Window System.

Well, the x windows system is still used on Mac OS X & all distros with a GUI.
So we(unix/linux) can claim the oldest surviving GUI.

still beta although it wont be in 10 days. 4/24 is the final release date. An RC should be comin out later this week. I'm lovin this release so far, by far is the best release of ubuntu I've used and I've been using it on and off since edgy (four versions ago) and now with hardy I've all but left my windows partition unbooted except for occasional gaming and a weekly school assignment i need Office 07 for.

I found my 'gotcha' with Mandriva 2008.1....there is an incompatibility with Virtual Box non-free even though the OSE version is in the repo's. I think this is the case....I guess I will be posting a Kubuntu desktop soon :D This version is good enought to give it one more shot...machine hangs during guest OS harddrive format.

Yes, actually Mint KDE CE, Kubuntu and Mandriva 2008.1 are my favorites that will work for me (because I work out of my home), Mandriva head and shoulders above the others (for my hardware, speed, personal tastes, etc)
