    I dual booted without knowing what sudo was :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
I would use 8.04, it breaks and fixes stuff, but is updated at the very least.
Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu Edgy, now, each release of Ubuntu is based off the last, now, your saying there going back to Ubuntu for the base of Mint 5? That'd be cool, but it would involve a lot of work.

de.1337, I have the same system, similar specs, and the same HDD.
My Partitions were set like this when I dual booted:
    40GB Windows
    15GB Linux
256MB Swap, now I would use more then this just in case, so 512MB or 1GB would be good.
I know you have IM, and I can walk you through the process there. The only thing you will need to do is get the firmware for the wireless card, it's small so dial up will be OK, more on that when you install it.
I'm sure with me and pixelot you'll be OK.

Excuse my wrong terminology, it's based on Daryna but uses Hardy packages. In fact, i think they should base it off Hardy, we're basically using Edgy with updated programs. O_O

Of course, as I already stated, there are a lot more barriers in moving from Windows to Linux than there are in moving from one Linux distro to another.

Erm sorry to but in on the partitioning but...
Ive just downloaded, about a week ago, both the heron and the Mint RC1 beta. I haven't duel booted on any system yet, Ive just used a old-comp so far. But going through the installation on my XP machine, but not installing, there's a slider which seems to allow you to allocate the Linux Os a certain amount of space on the HDD, creating a windows partition, allowing the installation to automatically do the partitioning business whilst keeping windows/ another Linux distro. I think that the slider is a new feature of the new 8.10 Ubuntu spin-offs.

attached are two screen shots of this slider, taken inside a virtual machine that was running Ubuntu with a 20GB Virtual drive. These show how the linux partition could be changed.

What barriers? Are you advocating Windows in the Linux forum? Wow, that's quite a something. If you get good hardware and know your way around using Linux is as easy as breathing.
Linux Mint 5 has an RC2 already.

Sorry, I was just trying to help :) . When I get round to duel booting my windows machine, I will use the slider- adjusting the partitions post-install. Until then my old-comp with linux will do me. I also have RCII, i'm currently in the distro jumping stage, trying everything out ect. It seems like ive got more linux distro's downloaded onto my machine than there are virus for windows.

Yeah, I noticed that slider sort of thingy, I guess you could say (though I didn't try it) when I was trying to install Xubuntu 8.04 on my old desktop today. It seemed to detect my Windows install and suggest partition sizes for Windows and Xubuntu.

Thanks everyone so far. I might be installing tomorrow or Thursday. It depends on when my HD and enclosure come, so I can do backup. Woot!

He should use hardy for sure, but if he finds he doesn't like it then he can use LinuxMint (also a great start) or PCLinuxOS (even though he seems like a gnome guy). You better download and burn them both for him right now.

Lol, Ok, I guess I'll go with Hardy. If... I can get a modem driver.

Edit: downloading a modem driver now. If it works on the 8.04 LiveCD (which I have yet to burn :D), I will use 8.04. If not... 7.10.

Unfortunately, it doesn't. I got my HD and enclosure today, installed the HD in the enclosure, plugged it in, and it didn't work. It turns on, and the drive spins, but neither Windows or Ubuntu could access it as a drive. It doesn't mount. Nothing new in my computer. No auto-mount in Ubuntu. Interestingly enough, HD Tune can access it and scan it for errors. The quick scan came up clean, and I'm running a full scan now.

This is the hard drive I bought.

Alright, I hope this works. I think I'm going to put off installing Ubuntu until tomorrow. I have to scan the drive for errors completely, back up my data, verify it, and then I shall proceed with the destruction and renewal. Meaning, deleting stuff from my laptop HD and installing OS's, and that sort of thing. For now... I have some Ubuntu stuff to investigate and partitioning to figure out. Thanks, people. :D
