Flashing a BIOS is always a mildly risky thing regardless of how proficient you are at computers mainly due to the fact that if by some reason the power gets cut while your in the process, you run the risk of damage. That's why you really shouldn't do it unless the update fixes a problem that you are experiencing. I do it just because I want to keep everything up-to-date which probably isn't a good reason for doing it but oh well.

But if you really want to do it, you can use hp Drive Key Boot Utility (google it) to make a USB thumb drive bootable. Make sure you find an installerless package because it won't install on a more current OS. You'll also need the MSDOS boot disk files that are normally used for a Floppy disk for this process. After you use it, put the BIOS update files on it and go into your BIOS on startup and make the USB boot instead of your hard drive (It's a setting). Then when you boot to the USB, simply run the .bat file and when it's done flashing, restart and go into the BIOS and Load Bios Defaults so that you don't get an error on startup. Sorry that's not in-depth enough but I don't really have time to make a tutorial. I'm sure someone has already done this on this board somewhere else though.

EDIT: I've uploaded the extracted boot utility files plus the DOS boot files for you in case you can't find them. The program seemed to start up fine in Win 7 so it should work with Vista as well. Here's the link.

I KNOW I KNOW, but imagine geting 2.2 ghz per core without even overclocking or fsb changes, that makes everything safe!

The deadline is still to come lol, i really want to know how to add multipliers in RMCLOCK.

THIS is the best tool to do so .. http://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=113295.0 been flashing bios for "fun" and no issues so far
Follow the user guide and you should be set
i read somewhere that's it's safer not to touch the multiplier itself , the safest way is OC which in theory should increase the multiplier aswell.

@ lena , well i was referring to lambo's crack but thanks :p but while we are at it , put the "x" on max and let me know .. thanks
EDIT again :p : next time tell the msi support to speak english ! what the hell is S5 ?

Thus why if i can lock in at 8.5 multi then the MSI's overclock would actually be very efficient.

Guys, looking on the specification teh best is buy from HP an qx9300 for less then 600$.
Open multipliers and from start u have 2.53 ghz.
Playing with setfsb not give me nothing. But today i installed sandra 2010 and i looked some strange thing.Confirmed wiht cpu-z
Sometimes when u need the cpu goes up to 2.26 ghz but just when sometimes buggy. So my q9000 for 1 sec has a 2.26 ghz and Sandra reports back thi in this way Q9000@2000Mhz(QC 2260 Mhz...).
The CPU-Z reported that the FSB steady but the multiplier goes up from 7.5 to 8.5 if i not fail on numbers.(i catched the 8 but i dont know if it is 8.5 or just 8.0)

    Someone can explain this???

    idle at 40
load (depends on games) pro evo 2010 52 / fallout 3 64 / bla & bla whatever games i play it never hits over 70 . yes my gpu is always on 530/880. like i said to you last time around , stop monitoring all the games you play ! every single crap you got running in the background will affect your performance .. if you just bought the freaking laptop i would understand but that ain't the case
    i simply can't .. higher = atikmcrap ....

yep high performance . case is closed , no everest , fraps , or any other useless crap running .. using windows classic to gain a tiny bit of juice .. not gonna work with Q9

Use this to fry your GPU http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/ (seasoned to taste :p)

Its not a bug, its a feature, called IDA, im trying to base my overclocking methods around that (i can lock multipliers at 8.0 on the q9000 for now :) i want more. )

Or in the q9000's case, the locked multiplier im aiming for is 8.5.

    @lena , yes it's running on startup

EDIT 2 : Ati overdrive always been buggy , try it and click on "apply overclocking at start up" at the bottom .. play for like an hour or so non stop and post the result
ps: don't go beyond 550/900 yet!

one thing you have to understand is that the mobility 4850 WILL struggle with newer games . just tone down the graphics and play , vsync off , AA off etc etc
AND stop messing about ! TBH i never give a damn about temp , i value performance at any cost regardless of temps .. whether it dies on me in the next yr or so i don't give a F.

Well my next buy will most likely be a 5 series gpu and a rig, although im praying the lappy stays alive for a long time.

Good thing is if 9.5 is the p9500's multi, then it should be in for IDA dragging it up too like 10-10.5 :D

New sidebar gadget for displaying your GPU temp in the sidebar!

I saw there was something I had to set my GPU clock to in order to overclock, what were the settings? Whenever I tried to use the "auto-tune" option, my screen froze up.

Dude! You're not gonna be happy 'till you brick your system. Flashing a mobo bios is risky enough, but the gpu?

I seem to remember someone posting a link for a program for messing with the fan speed, but they didn't recommend doing it.

The 5 series rock, I just got another 5850, it arrived today and took me 10 minutes to install. I have to say. AWESOME, what a preformance boost having dual 5850's. The 5970 is way to expensive right now and out of stock.
