you guys do understand that the best way to try for an overclock isnt just pushing the multiplier right? you really need to pay attention to the fsb ratio for the ram, from what i remember its a 2:3 ratio for this laptop, at least with not much running, what ive noticed with the laptops was that they just up the fsb a little bit which ups the ram and the proc, the reason why the rams getting pissed it its cheap crap ram.

theres two ways to avoid this problem, and a step approaching it,

with overclocking you can't just force the speed, well you can but its obviously dangerous.

im actually fairly impressed with what the 725s can do standard, but thats about the max you can really expect, valueram isnt even remotely made for that and thats bringin on the bsods and failed ram.

if youre gonna valueram oc you need to push that fsb, and try and keep the ram divider set so the ram stays at the stock 800 speed, otherwise rams gonna get pissed. since this laptop as well as others are locked multipliers. its all gonna come down to the stepping of the processor and how well it ocs.

thats probably why they limited the fsb, so people dont cook the hell outa their ram.

if you want more freedom, then grab that g.skill ram that ive got and everyone else is running in the 720/1722 forum, thats confimed by myself running at ddr1000 for close to a year now. with that you can worry less about the ram divider and more on just cranking the fsb.

what we need to do is see if we can get a memory testing program thatll work with setfsb. ive never bothered to use it since i mostly do bios overclocking, we need a good stressing program like memtest which will let you know the limits of your ram.

i dont think ill oc with this ram at all in my advent since its just valueram.

keep me posed though, im curious to see how well we can tweak this proc through windows.

that makes sense, there is obviously a huge difference in ram quality, and the MSI is great value for money, but for a reason, compromises will have been made to save cost.

Laptops have never really struck me as being particularly suitable for oc, because of there cooling solution, and the MSI touch button oc just seems a bit of a gimmick.

I'm pretty certain MSI's engineers have designed a well balanced system with value components and, although I can see there's a challange there, it's hardly worth the effort for most of us. Still good luck with it.

At the mo there is no fsb change, just multiplier. (I can get 2.7ghz outa the processor with this method, but only on certain threads.)

Thats why this method of overclock, we really want to work,

Dont overclock your advent, your ram will die :p mine certainly did, but a got even worse hyundai replacement which is very nice i must say. (I drop timings down to 7 occasionally when OCing.)

It'd be nice to have stock 1066 ddr2 ram :).

Yep, it's Kingston HyperX I linked above, good price for the UK right now :)
Shame memory is so much more expensive right now (bar DDR3 4GB SODIMMS), I paid £25 each for my DDR3 and they're now about 35-45 each.

Its a tricky process, if you have the advent, you can go ahead and push, if you have a really old GT725, you can go ahead and push, if you have a new machine, you'l have to take chances with bios flashing etc, the guide is in my signature, if you go ahead and click it, you can see a couple of things about it, and how well people have actually done.

Hey Tekkno , Mine is a QAVR , QAVS is fine as well , they both got temp sensors . Avoid the rest though (QAJF and so on) .
Do you use turbo button a lot ?

    Hi,

    thanks for the reply.

Not at all. All I use is the "Game" Profile, although I´m not sure it does anything :)

Bios is 1.10, EEC 4.32 so everything is up to date.

I will search for an Q9200 QAVS or QAVR on ebay from Asia. Any alternative source?

That's ok then coz you won't be able to achieve 24% on quads as on c2d whilst using it .. only 4% unfortunately. And setfsb doesn't seems to work with 1.10 so no overclocking unless you use the 1722 1S bios.

Anyway, the guy I got mine from ain't got none unfortunately .. Shirley is recommended http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-Intel-Qua...mQQptZCPUs?hash=item3a56cd3027#ht_3411wt_1166 .
There's a new seller on ebay (enthusiastbits) , avoid him ! He was selling under the name whatzretail before and got screwed after I bought one off him.

EDIT : sorry just woke up and missed his ad :p That's the guy I got mine from : http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/INTEL-CORE-QU...rds_CPUs_CA?hash=item20aedd5623#ht_5275wt_939

Right with regards to the whole IDA situation.

Throttlestop is having some effect in throttling the cores up, prehaps with this tool + undervolt we can get this locking in more perminantly

    got a question.

My sons birthday is comming up soon, and he has been saving for a while for his own laptop. Trouble is he only has £500 and likes gaming, as well as school work.

Any ideas. £1200 quid I'm pretty confidant on what to buy. No idea about the super budget market though. I've got a few ideas, but would appreaciate your thoughts?

right now im not sure what to suggest, honestly, i love this line of laptops, and this 725 is a reall cruizer, ive been using it since it came in.

my favorite part was just swapping the drives from my 720 to my 725 and having it boot perfectly minus graphics drives, :D

check currys if they still have the 7555, or if you feel lucky you can pick up a GT740 barebones and make one from scratch. the good ol fashioned way.

I don't think we should expect many huge updates or performance increases with our cards from here on. ATI will be concentrating on win7 compatibility and fine tuning the new 5 series cards. Ours will just be left by the wayside :(

are you sure about the 5 series? i dont recall what their power consumption charts but they are extremely efficient compared to the amount of performance they dish out. it honestky wouldnt suprise me. it may take a generation or two but if they bump the manufacturing process down some more and tighten some loose ends it might be p[ossible

it's not about the power consumption. All the new laptops have the new intel cpus which uses a different chipset that only uses the 3.0 mxm cards. There is no point for anyone to make mxm 2.1 of ati's 5000 cards.

Just proves that this sort of spec isn't niche, and that the out of town stores are over saturated with poor value product.
