I flashed it with the 1.0S. It was definately s different BIOS. The boot was totally different. Maybe it was just my "inexperience", but I still could not modify my settings with SetFSB.
-
It's not the 1.0S for the 725 , it's the barebone bios , the boot menu is different , it removes the OC ability of the 725 so that setfsb can work it's magic.
Try the one in my previous post , that should do it. -
Got it. I will try it as soon as I get home this evening. Thanks.
-
No prob
You can try to go higher if you want , get OCCT & Prime95 to test your clocks.

If you need anything else , cata's OC thread might come in handy. -
Wow! I can't belive this, almost a year later and the 725 thread is still alive and kicking. (So is my 725.)
Something which was mentioned long ago, but the 725s or at leats mine shipped with memory set to 666 instead of 800, ALT-INS in the BIOS screen gets you to the advanced setting on the non-barebones BIOS as IIRC the barebones BIOS already has access to all of the setting minus the builtin overclocking feature.
Anyways, I'm still on the old original BIOS([EDIT]1.0R[/EDIT]), but using catalyst 9.12 since MSI is so tardy in updating video drivers. (I use mobility modder.net to fix generic catalyst so that they install as I didn't feel like monkeying with the config files manually.) -
The GT725 will never die haha, its such a great machine, i'm using 9.12 MSI's but might revert to 10.1's when they actually convert lol.
Guys this is a stock vantage run
Feels a bit slow, its hard to believe i put 1000 on top of GPU and CPU when overclocking lol.
Any other stock runs out there? -
I think the one auto ran is stock. I need a key
-
Automatikjack Notebook Evangelist
cat, my score was a stock run, with 500/800 for my 4850, since its temps are so high im scared to oc it, i really wish i had control of my fan so i could crank it up a bit and make things a bit cooler.
i might try and push the ram some since its less of a worry when it comes to heat. One question i have is how you guys get overdrive to even show up, i dont see anything!
as for a newer msi made driverset, grab the ones for the gt729, theyre actually catalyst 9.70!
i discovered this on accident after my modding of 10.1 failed with mobility modder. i was fairly bummed needless to say. -
Hey auto, i failed at also modifying the 10.1's but i have a link in my email i need to check to get the 10.1's working hopefully!
But this run was a stock run, what score did you get Auto?
500/800 is Alienware defaults? -
It's alive !!!!!!!!!!!
@ what res you want me to run one ? on performance ?
@ auto , even the 725 is 9.7
-
Yep, performance stocks,
And huraaaaaay!!!!
-
-
5660? Maybe i need to reinstall drivers
,
Will try with 9.12 Ati, (I forgot i am on msi stock lol.)
Hmmm seems my machine is complete fail in comparison to yours haha,
Whats your vbios ver (I've probably asked you before...lol),
Will freshly install instead of just manual Display driver selecting.
Dead i can't find 9.12's, dont suppose you have a 7 x64 link do you?
I'm going to try out official ati 9.9's also. -
Before it was 6950 and now it's 6846
Turbo is useless .....
My Vbios is .031766 , how about yours ?
EDIT : i have all the ATI drivers from 9.7 to 10.1 , i'll find a way to send it to you.
took too long to upload on mediafire , got a working link from softpedia
Here you go http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/GR...ay-Driver-Suite-912-for-Vista64-Win7x64.shtml -
Oh yeah, if you're using linux look on the phoronix forum for a fix for the build .deb install for the 10.1 catalyst driver. ATI forgot to put in a symlink so the build craps out with a missing lib...
(Ubuntu 9.10 x86-64, but IIRC I saw some other people w/different distros mention that they had similar problems as well, and AFAIK the same problem will almost definitely affect the debian install as well. OTOH Ubuntu is now officially supported by the GUI installer, but it installs in a package manager unfriendly fashion...)
[EDIT]
10.1 cats was a pretty crap release anyways unless you have a 5XXX in which case you might need/appreciate it. They're an old build from early December and I think that ATI ----ed up all the released drivers(see above about what they did with the linux release). IMNHO they should've just skipped January release. i.e. I'm hoping it's broken driver packaging rather than mob modder no longer working...
I was hoping for 10.2 last week, but I see that they still haven't popped up. (They seem to post them on Thursday afternoon/morning PST, sometimes if you modify the link for the prior month to the current you can find them a little earlier...)
The linux drivers are still pretty crappy, but they've made some progress over the last 9m or so. i.e. I can now enable compiz AND awake from sleep w/o the 725 freezing up and they added OpenGL 3.2, but video tearing and a whole host of other problems remain. The OSS driver is only up to OpenGL 1.4 with some 2.0 support, and limited GLSL implementation but, hopefully, it should be up to 3.2 + full GLSL support in 6m or so and should be a better driver overall than the cats. Supposedly it already does a better job at 2D...
[/EDIT] -
Just so that I get it through my thick skull: this needs mobility modder to install?
-
That's right , it needs to be modded with MM.
10.1 isn't compatible with it so we have to stick with 9.12. -
Since I'm back here for now, is it worth risking a BIOS update to MSI's most recent? (I almost never OC and when I do I'm happy enough with the default 16% setting by MSI BIOS/utils.)
Which brings up another oddity with CPUZ, Sandra, and some other utils I see the CPU kick past 2.4GHz occasionally with no OCing enabled, it hits almost 2.5GHz on it's own according those tools...
Modding catalyst drivers(generic) to install: There is info buried here somewhere in the thread about modding them by hand, which involves adding the vendor and part ID plus maybe a signature as well IIRC... -
Yeah it's safe to update your bios. The 1.10 adds some new features like F3 to boot into restored partition and some other stuff I can't really remember.
No decrease in performance whatsoever -
Sorry for the wait,
.031766 Hey dead?
Mines 031382, Ancient in comparison :/ But i'm afraid to flash a new vbios just incase advent has done something to the card, although the ID and Subvendor is shown as MSI's,
Thanks for the driver man! Will do some comparison runs i think of MSI's ones, 9.12 and 9.9 official ati release for mobility. -
Yeah kinda old , I think it should be safe as technically it's an MSI. If you need it let me know
-
Haha, yep, i'll concider it lol, might get in touch with MSI just to see if anyone can give us some more information in that area!
.
-
Drop em an email , they usually replied back after 48hrs. Pretty sure they will come up with some crap though ... same as when i asked them why they didn't add any support for quad on turbo , they told me that according to their lab test , quad ain't stable over 4% !! you believe in that BS !?
E: kept on getting atikmcrap since installing vantage
I'm Restoring to last system image ....
E2: It was vantage , everything back to normal since the image restore , 550/900 without crashing
-
Nice ! what GPU clocks ?
-
550/900
Also got a nice bump in 3DMK06:
Score: 11,181
SM 2.0: 4269
SM 3.0: 5059
CPU: 3628
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=13229208 -
That's 195 points lower than mine
Have you tried going over 2.4 ?
-
A little hesitant being as its all stock heatsink on the inside. I might start feeling a little froggy later and push it a little more....maybe..;>)
-
The cooling in the 725 is pretty good , it can handle it
What bios you using ? -
If you do it be careful although, your MSI ram should be grades over my consumer stuff,
Very nice scores, and always happy to help!
Bit strange how everyone is getting higher scores with just CCC oc?
The GPU is working much better, and as far as i'm aware, the only real change is the vbios. -
Edit *Sorry for DP*10.1 drivers have decided they will just work, but something stops, im quite confused at to what as my card registers the new drivers.
-
The 1.0S that catacylsm links in his msi overclocking thread.
-
So not worth the upgrade you reckon cat?
-
ok...I flashed this BIOS and SetFSB still does not allow me to make any changes. I remember why I never OC'd before, this gets frustrating.
-
Gah, naa 10.1's being troublesome, will revert to 9.12 i think lambo,
Thats really strange n2dp, what CPU are you using?
nvm, q9000,
Did i post anything about ec board needing to be changed? -
It is the Q9200.
-
Hmm, were there ever oem?
Or reason for intel to lock the CPU itself?
Did you flash the EC firmware too? -
Any EC firmware will do , I might have gave you the wrong one then .... Try this one http://www.mediafire.com/?tfhmjylmrfu (password 666) Sorry man i got too many freaking bios .. need to start renaming em..
-
duh..no, I did not...omg (may have been my problem the whole time)
I have it downloaded...how do I flash it? -
It keeps telling that my version is incompatable.
-
Hmm interesting, i'l try and find out, but for now i will take my leave
Night night,
550/900 Clocks always destabilise on my system
.
-
I doubt we are going to get any more performance or stability gains for our cards. It seems everyone is now as least using desktop 5*** series, let alone mobility 4***.
-
Haha, we will never die lambo!
Just running around the registry, i see that there are AMD Southbridge AHCI Raid entries?
Are they always there? Lol. -
What directory are they in?
The weird thing is theres nothing as fun as just randomly going through the registry changing stuff!
I found the high score value for inkball, and now NO ONE CAN BEAT ME!!! -
Automatikjack Notebook Evangelist
Success!! I think I got 10.1 working, I used a beta version of mobilitymodder from driverheaven forums to mod the standard catalyst drivers and it seems to be running smoothly...
Hey what's everyone using for their gpu oc tools? I have gpu-z for my monitoring tool, ati tray tools is kinda useless, and rivatuner doesn't support 9.x drivers, I tried gputool but it won't let my apply oc. -
Whats wrong with CCC?
-
OK, might take the plunge and attempt a BIOS update..
Anyways, mobility modder.net: Just read the forum thread and it appears that ATI made more changes to the driver requiring a mob mod update. As of Feb 7 it was quoted as being "at least 2w" until the tool is updated...
Oddly enough, it sounds as though they get help from ATI OTOH I wish that ATI would just do what nVidia does and make a TRULY generic driver... -
I can't get the overclock on the cpu to stick after a shutdown. They stick on a reboot but default to stock speed on a complete shutdown. Any thoughts?
Found my oc limit for my Q9000 to be about 72, a little over 2.5GHz. Still gets about the same score in Vantage.
Also reflashed back to bios v1.10 and firmware 1722EMSI.432 to see if I would run into any problems. Went off without a hitch.
-
This set installs without modding. I know it says 9.12 but from what I understand all driver packages that start with 8.70xxxxx are actually 10.xs'
By jaxmacfl at 2010-02-16 -
That's one of the reason I went back to MSI's BIOS .. That's how it is , you need to apply it at every start-up .. Kinda suck ! There's an app called setfsbauto , it supposedly applied to OC'd clock at start-up , haven't tried it though
I've heard about that , some lucky ones who managed to install it but it appears as 9.12. Anyway 10.2 should be out soon and so does MM.
Edit: that's sweet ! Most can't get past that 2.4 barrier
