Its also possible a poor pad job on the memory chips, but yeah just use warrenty on it, best thing to do and a fresh GPU to your list is perfect in terms of longetivity :).

I have a question to all GT725 owners with QuadCore CPUs. Many of You overclock the CPU, as well as the GPU. Have any of You ever had any problems with MSI PSU? It's rated at 120W. What makes me wonder is, how is it possible, that the PSU can deliver enough juice for a 45W CPU (even higher when OCed), 50W (55W?) GPU (higher when OCed again), 17 inch display, mainboard, HDD etc. etc. Do You guys use more powerful PSUs, or something?

    Kind regards,
    Marek

the psu included with these laptops are very hearty and seem to push the power with little to no complaint, my brick doesnt seem to get hot at all even under intense gaming, maybe warm at the most. Whereas previous bricks would get unbearably hot to the touch even when they werent stressed at all.

And my power draw is probably the highest out of the 1722 members at the moment, since I am using a card that pulls significantly more than standard 4850s since its an alienware master card which can reportedly pull up to 65w, so its definitely maxing my card slot out, the cpu is reportedly 45w. leaving the other components to cover the 10+

As for Silicon Chip, your card is cooked buddy, many cards that are defective or die, will work in 2d mode, such as on your desktop, and limited graphics, but anything even remotely stressing or 3d will cause the artifacting and gsod as you see, I can't say weither its a gpu or ram issue, but your card definitely needs replacing. Sorry bud, but look at the bright side, you'll get a brand new card to make really angry via OC

I had it tested and the report I had back from MSI was that there had been a hardware failure.

Essentially it would boot into windows, but none of the cc or peripheral components would function, so no Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, overdrive etc:

I guess something had fried, or a connection was lost accross the main board.

I'm not worried about the resolution, I like the that it's 1650x1080. I'm more worried about the screen QUALITY.

How evenly lit is the screen?
Is the image clear or grainy?
How good is the contrast? Are blacks black and whites white?

    Thanks,

Hey Cat, i seem to remember you saying something when you overclocked your q9000 to 2.4Ghz and it jumped to 2.7Ghz every now and then? (or maybe i am completely making this up.. who knows)

anyway, I just noticed that when I set the fsb using SetFSB, the core speed jumps up just as I set it, and then returns to what it should be. Example.. see below.. It should be 2792.1, but when I click 'Set FSB' it briefly hits 3.1Ghz.

All i can say is that the GT725's screen lack brightness and it's grainy .. no deal breaker as it's only noticeable when browsing.

According to 640 & 740 owners , the screen is good.

the samsung screens that are used in msi's laptops have very good quality, however its not "across the board quality" meaning, that colors are good, the chance of dead/stuck pixels is close to nil, no backlight bleed, or uneven brightness.

The downsides is that the screens aren't very bright, which is unfortunate, and this problem is even more "illuminated" (yes excuse the pun) when you compare it to anything with an led backlit screen. I have personally replaced my screen with an LG screen used in dells and the quality there is actually alot better, Screen replacement with a brighter and better screen isn't actually that hard,

Check my profile for a guide to DIY screen replacement.

Happy birthday Blazin! Did your cake candles set of the smoke detector? :D

Specs on the GX740 are sweet, but that one's just the base model. Go here http://1toppc.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=GX740-079US&Category_Code and you can customize this puppy with a faster CPU like the Intel Core i7 Extreme 920XM, 2.0~3.20GHz.

I actually have another samsung screen in my R700 and i think its pretty standard, but when you look at it you think, have they used a backlit LED? its brightness and colour is fantastic, i just think its a normal pannel.

Only problem is its low native res (Well same as the advents) but i'd love to move that over :D.

Doesn't this have an interchangeable tip? Would it be an issue trying to angle around the 9 cell battery? I mean I know it's an L angle, but I'd be concerned about end snagging. (or am I over thinking this?)

Ok, I'll bite... Does the 6 cell sit flush with the case, or does it protrude like the 9 cell?

6 cell will most likely fit perfectly where as 9 petrudes,

As for the tip, it just hangs over the battery so its not too bad. (If its 9 cell)

Thank you for the reply. Do you (or anyone else?) feel the screen brightness is a serious issue for doing graphic / 2d work (or basically non-gaming in non-dark rooms). I can deal with the glossy screen, and I like the 7xx's resolution a lot, but if the screen is too dark, white's are going to be terribly white looking.

Also, Automatikjack, what LG screen model did you purchase?

I suppose if I get this, and I hate the screen, I can upgrade it down the road. Right now, I think my decision is basically between the gx740 and the sager 8690. The sager has a ncie bright screen, but the 1600x900 resolution really turns me off, and going to the full-HD version is way to high res for a 15" notebook in my view. The price difference between the two would nearly cover the cost of buying a new screen too.

I do quite a bit of graphics work on the GT725 210UK. It's ideal at 1920. The screen isn't glossy, but is reasonably vibrant. Not the best, but not bad so long as your viewing directly.

I find the glossy screens really hard to get on with. The colours tend to look stronger with a deeper black, but reflection can be a problem unless it's quite dark in the room, which isn't ideal for your eyes.

If I'm doing something which requires colour accuracy, CMYK, then I use a pro 23 inch colour corrected monitor. Laptops aren't really designed for colour accurate work, but the MSI's WUXGA+ is just about ok for casual sketching, web, Flash work.

I do a reasonable amount of video editing and photoshop work with my pictures and video, and THAT is probably one of the nicer reasons for a larger screen, the screen i have in my laptop is an LG 171wu if I recall correctly, and is vibrant, though still not as bright as some desktop screens/ LED laptop screens which is to be expected.

Viewing angles for this screen are amazing, as to be expected, they approach literally 180 from the sides while retaining all color, though its extremely hard to read subtitles from that angle =]

Now as for panel types in our laptops, I wonder if they are anything but TN.

apparently someone is jealous, yeah quality wise this screen is highly reccomended, I'm also fairly impressed with the Au Optronics screen I dropped in my advent before I sold it to my boss's boss. Nice coloring there, the model numbers been added to my MSI screen replacement guide, I'll be adding a guide for the HP Mini 110 here soon enough, since someone gave me one with a broken screen. (apparently people like snuggling with their 110s).

I should have that 1tb WD hard drive coming in the mail here soon enough, I'll let everyone know how that fares out.

I just swapped out my WD 320 for a WD 640. Thought about getting the 1tb but couldn't justify the cost, plus I didn't think it would work with the mounting bracket.

Edit: Forgot to ask what do you use to calibrate your screen?

Spyder3 is very good, getting good results even from sub £300 monitors.

I Have a Samsung XL20, which I use for professional work and a cheaper Samsung 23" SM2343BW for tools and so on.

Usually I just doss around on the MSI and do some casual work. For really serious print and rendering work I use the Sammy's and a Quad Core Amari based Desktop with Quadro FX Board.

I don't see it going for 800 , Advent ruined the UK Market with their stupid rebrand .. And don't forget the upcoming Gx's to the UK shores very soon .. Which should be priced at 999 startup (640)

    the res is correct ;)

fish, easy on the triple posting bud,

@Death, what happened man? What'd you do to actually break that thing, I though these MSI's were close to unstoppable?

I just got my tax return, I'm soo tempted to grab a gx740 it hurts, I just don't know if i wanna buy one now and see the price change or something, frostycomputers has them in stock online, as for the coloring, I'd really like to get another red one as opposed to a black one...

Anyone see any rebrands out there that are white or grey like the advent? I really liked that color, just didn't like the change in the touch panel...

as for the 725 on ebay, I like how that guy listed his as having 4 MB of ram... I wonder where the other 4,092 went?

ive got it done and it looks great! now I'm just trying to find the time to get the new Diamond thermal paste stuff on there and bench it, i have some information with the differences in temps comparing a prime95 of the origional backplate to the modded one, ive got the grill flush with the plastic of the case, looks very well done, now I've just got to work on applying the right amount of paste, it applies very different that AS5, and muster the courage to take the heatsink off my 4850 and play with the new paste on there.

It was hell even trying to get the gpu to make contact, so doing that again is gonna be a headache.

Guys, what is the difference in running on battery between 6-cell 5200mAh and 9-cell 7800mAh in GT725 or GX720/MS-1722? I'm asking about average time while Web browsing. I'm considering buying a 9-cell 7800mAh battery from ebay, I just want to know if difference is worth the price.

    Kind regards,
    Marek
