I have figured out how to make setfsb work with the normal BIOS on my GT627, if you give me a few days I can probably figure out what registers you need to change.

One thing I'm curious about is this trick lets you raise the requested VID signal to the CPU but I'm not sure how some motherboards are going to react to this and if they will be capable of delivering the required voltage. In theory they should be able to.

I think requested VID in ThrottleStop can go up to 1.50 volts for mobile CPUs but I don't know if all motherboards are going to be able to deliver that much voltage.

If anyone with an Extreme CPU wants to do some testing then you can run Prime95 Small FFTs at a reduced multiplier so the heat doesn't get too crazy and then when the core temperature stabilizes, try bumping VID up from 1.10 to 1.20 to 1.30 to 1.40 and see if that changes the core temperature. If temp goes up then that's a good sign that actual core voltage is going up too. Any volunteers? :)

moral hazard: I can't remember telling anyone about the Extreme=1 option for unrecognized Extreme ES CPUs. :D

VID does work , from 1.20 to 1.30 temps goes up by 4 to 5 degrees. I did the test on the lowest multi which is x6

    1.40 - average temps of 72-73c
    1.50 - average temps of 78-81c
    What's new in 2.53 ?

I just added the INI option MobileCPU=1 for Moral Hazard since his ES CPU wasn't being recognized as a mobile CPU. Intel leaves out some of the details in the CPU-Z Specification box for ES CPUs.

What's a QX9200 by the way? Did these only come as ES CPUs? Can you post a CPU-Z screen shot so I can have a look unless it is top secret. :)

I found an interesting webpage with 101 CPUs that have been released, many only as ES CPUs that I had never heard of before.

    iNTEL Mobile CPU

Now that you know how the ThrottleStop unlock feature works, can you try using ThrottleStop without the Extreme=1 option in the INI file. TS should be able to recognize that you have an Extreme CPU without needing that extra tag.

The information in the CPU-Z Specification box is written directly into the CPU. Intel didn't include a model number so software has to guess after that what model it really is. Your CPU has a CPUID of 0x1067A which is identical to the retail CPUs like the QX9300 E0 so it should be functionally the same as a QX9300, especially now that you can set the multiplier to whatever you like.

Nice find ! There's a Qx9700 on that list ... wish it was available as ES :D even an x9500 would have been sweet.

Done and it works without the additional line .. may be i did something wrong the 1st time around

ThrottleStop checks the info that is shown in the CPU-Z Specification box for the word Extreme or one of the Extreme CPU model numbers. Your CPU contains that info so I was a little surprised when it originally wasn't working for you.

I think all those CPUs on that list have been released as engineering samples. Some of the models were likely very limited in quantity and I'm sure are next to impossible to find. Now I've got some new model numbers to search Ebay for. :)

Intel might also be leaving their options open to release some of those higher models in the future for user upgrades. That'd be nice.

Dead2th3world: I noticed something when looking through your register dump. It shows your CPU has a default multiplier of 9.0 but also supports an Intel Dynamic Acceleration (IDA) multiplier of 10.0. When using ThrottleStop in monitoring mode only, did you ever see reported multipliers in the 9.0 to 10.0 range? Usually when running a single thread of Prime95 you would expect to see a higher average multi but only if your board supports IDA.

Edit: I had a look at your pics and your board definitely supports IDA mode. It probably doesn't do anything now when you manually adjust the multiplier to 10.0 or higher.

Thanks ;) Will try to hit a higher note once MH get setfsb sorted :D
Time for you to hit the "buy it now" button , you know you want to :D

Yeah I've noticed that , especially in CPUz .. doesn't kicks in that often though. Yes It's possible for me to turn it off through TS.

Is it possible to force turbo mode ?

I want it, I want it but I like to eat too. :)

If I was you I'd check Disable Turbo now that you can create your own dynamic acceleration by setting the multiplier to whatever you like. IDA was designed to accelerate one core while the other core was asleep on Core 2 Duos. It works slightly differently on the Quad CPUs but it's no match for being able to lock all 4 cores at whatever speed you like.

Not to pick on the competition too much but CPU-Z is not very accurate at reporting IDA mode.

So I have been playing with setfsb this morning and have found out some more about the way MSI does things.

One quick bit of info I will share with you is that the turbo is controlled by bytes 23 and 25.

If you change byte 23 to 1E (hit update) and change byte 25 to 1D (hit update), then press apply.

Now after doing that, when you press your turbo button you will get a 20% OC on the FSB.

    Screenshot:

If anyone needs a different overclock (25%, 30%...) let me know, I will play around with the registers and figure it out for you.

I guess I got a bit excited and started messing around with the ini file

Hehe, ill have to dump all this hefty info on the main page of the overclock thread because this stuffs great ^^,

You can trigger IDA, well all the time on the q9000, i dont know about the qx9200 but try run a flash video and pin it to 1 core, that should kick it in.

I have figured it out I think. The only problem is knowing how to change the PLL registers at startup so you don't have to do it manually every time you want to overclock.

Anyway, for now I would just change byte 23 and 25 to get the turbo button to give you a higher overclock.

yes it's normal for them not to match.

Just change the two bytes to the values that I show in my last post, then hit your turbo button. That should give you a 20% OC.

But save all your work before you do it, because 20% is a lot and you might get a BSOD.

It will only reset if the computer completely powers off.. i.e. Shutdown, whereas a restart will not reset it, as I found out when I OCed to about 3.1Ghz with SetFSB and it just kept BSODing, restarting and BSODing.. restarting and BSODing.. until I held down the power button.

    moral hazard,

As You probably know, I modded the bottom cover of my MS-1722 in a similar way as You did. Today I received my new MS-1727 with Mobility 5870. I cleared the GPU memory out of the heatpad that was applied, I put some thermal paste in the RAM chips and GPU, reseated the heatsink, transferred the MS-1722 bottom cover to the MS-1727 and run Furmark in extreme burning mode. After 10 mins temps of my Mobility 5870 stabilized at 85C. I will take a screenshot tonight and post it here.

This would be a lot better if we had a datasheet for the PLL, but IDT wont reply to my emails.

Shouldn't matter if it looks different, the registers are still the same because the PLL is the same, did you try it?

If you did and it didn't work, I have no idea why ATM, might need some troubleshooting.

    Firmware?

And my changes still aren't "sticking", they'll activate when the multiplier jumps down to x6 when I hit the Turbo button, but once they get back to x7.5 it goes back down to normal "Turbo".. Which probably means that the "step up" method is odd. It's stepping up to 20/24% and then it steps back down to 4%.
