I have this exact same laptop but the blu-ray drive doesnt work. I opened it up and found that the ribbon cable is torn...I already called MSI and asked for the cable and they said they only sell the whole blu-ray drive. Does anyone else know where I can find this ribbon cable? Another thing ive noticed. The"play, pause, ect" buttons dont work, as well as the turbo. But the Eco and other buttons do work. Anyone else know whats wrong with it?

If you have physically opened the drive and the ribbon cable is torn, then it sounds like someone has sabotaged your drive, that cable is impossible to tear under normal operation.
If you are skilled enough in the disassembly of drives you can take it apart and see if the laser assembly (the little blue eye) is permanently connected to the ribbon cable or if it is connected with one of the slider clips that hold in in place with pressure. The second part is to check if the other side which connects to the controller board inside the base of the drive.
If those two conditions are met you can replace the cable, with one from a dead bd drive or possibly a dead dvd rw drive.
But more likely you will have to just replace the drive entirely.
As for the buttons not working, it sounds like you may need to see about updaing the EC firmware, and then get the latest version of SCM all provided here
Keep us updated, this laptop you have sounds kinda suspicious though. Did you just get it? -
Well it came with the blu ray broken....The guy that sold it to me said that the previous owner had ripped out the drive and that is why he was getting rid of it. When I took it home. I opened it up and saw that the ribbon was in fact ripped. So I think the sorry matches
I dont remember if the cable can just "clip out" or not....but ill check ASAP.
But anyways, the firmware did fix the play buttons, but the turbo button still doesnt work. It just opens up a new internet window.....its been like this since I got it. -
Hi,
I have had the GT725 for a year now and have just got round to installing Windows 7.
I have a few noob questions.
Okay here goes. Win 7 has installed ATI driver:8.632.1.2000
Im sure this is not the latest one also Catalyst has disappeared.
Is my best option to download and install the driver via the ata site as i remember a while a go this option did not work properly.
All help much appreciated.

Yes it is, make sure you get the mobility version not desktop.

I'm having problems after about a year or so owning the GT725 and I was wondering if anyone could help me.
1.) Lately, the laptop has been making really loud noises. It sounds like the hardware is under going some intense processing or something is wrong with the fan even when there is only one program or so running. I'm trying to remove the casing that covers the fan, but I'm currently stuck. There are 3 screws to my knowledge and all 3 are removed, but when I try to pull out the casing, there seems to still be something holding it. In particular, the casing's corner by the shiny hexgon (another fan?) seems to be stuck, and I don't want to use to much force for fear of breaking it. Is there some hidden 4th screw on the other side?
2.) How do I remove the keyboard so I can clear out all the hair and dust that's accumulated underneath the keys w/o having to pull the keys out one by one? -
J, when you go to install the latest Catalyst/Drivers, use the uninstall feature first.

Here's a generic guide for laptop disassembly:
Step By Step Instructions On How To Take Your Laptop Apart
Video showing how to dissamble an MSI (1036/L715) laptop:
YouTube - MSI 1036/L715 Laptop Disassembly procedure
Just curious, why do you think it's the fan? What you're describing sounds more like the HDD going bad. -
Everytime I reboot by GT725, my USB connected devices (both internal and external) stop working. I have to go into device manager, delete all of the USB device entries and then refresh the system inventory. Once it redetects all of the usb devices, everything works fine.
Has anyone else ever seen this before? Windows 7 64bit. -
Automatikjack Notebook Evangelist
no that sounds like a very strange problem to have indeed, devices should be automatically detected and removed from the list when they are not there. I'm not sure what would cause that...
Have you checked microsoft's knowledge base regarding that? If not I'd say you're about due for a good reinstall of windows cause obviously something somewhere is very angry. It sounds like it might be an incompatable driver, or something got fudged along the way.
You might try going onto intel's website and getting the latest drivers for your chipset. The easiest way may be the INF update utility listed on their site under downloads. Alternatively you can try the drivers listed for your chipset, or the IMSM drivers, (intel matrix storage manager) which is very important to have on your machine.
now a question for everyone else:
So a few days ago I picked up a 500gb WD Blue drive thinking it'd be a nice little upgrade for my machine, and for some reason hard drive activity seems to be through the roof now. I'm wondering if its a problem with my "Questionable" processor or if its this hard drive just sucking. Anyone else have any problems with any western digital drives in their laptops? In a few days I might just throw my hitachi drive back in. -
Hmm, define "Questionable" processor. As for the HDD, WD makes some of the most reliable drives (imho), but it's possible you got a defective one. I swapped out my WD 320 and installed a WD640 and it's working fine.

As my sig lists I am sporting a Q9200, disregard the x, its an engineering sample. As for the hard drive, we'll see, I have 4tb of storage coming, as soon as I back everything up, I'll nuke my hitachi and drop it back in and see how performance looks.
I'm still waiting for Hitachi to prepare their answer to WD and Seagates 1tb 2.5 inchers, If they can make one closer to the 9.5mm spec, I think I'll splurge. -

I've gone over the last 20 pages but I don't see any hint for this -
Can anyone tell me how I can install the newest drivers for the graphics card? The ones I have are too old for Starcraft 2.
I tried the solution here - Mobility Modder - ATI Version, Install the Latest Drivers on your ATI laptop
but it doesn't change anything what so ever. It's as if I never followed the steps and the old drivers are intact. -
Automatikjack Notebook Evangelist
Goto ATI's website, and use the drop down bars to select mobility radeon and your model number, then download. Gone are the days of needing mobility modder.

I tried that too but it doesn't give me the option of updating the actual driver. Just wants to reinstall the CCC... only when I use the latest driver from MSI's site it actually "updates" the driver (to some crap from a year ago).
I select "custom" and see the available options. Only with the MSI I actually see the driver that the installer wants to update....... -
Automatikjack Notebook Evangelist
okay, what you need to do is get rid of the old crap before installing the new ccc suite, it will update the driver, use driversweeper to get rid of the old driver, and everything else ATI on your computer, once that is all gone, use the CCC suite, option one, and download that, that will download the full 10.7 package for your computer, drive/suite everything. After that is done you will be fully updated to the latest driver.
By using that tool, you force your computer to only have one choice, the new driver you are giving it, instead of it "possibly" selecting an older version. This software can do the same for realtek and various other big name hardware manufacturers. Hope this helps, keep us posted on your progress. -
Spiral Architect Notebook Consultant
Thanks a lot! This did the trick.
-
Hey I remember posting a problem regarding the CCC suite. The problem was that I was unable to open the CCC, regardless of how I tried, Start Menu, right click and desktop and CCC and I even tried to run it from its installed location, but the bloody thing wont start.
P.S: Somebody told me to reinstall the thing, that time I had 10.6 and today I updated to 10.7 and also reinstalled the CCC, but still no progress. -
Check for windows update, i think CCC is quite sensitive to things like framework.
-
Automatikjack Notebook Evangelist
yes make sure you have the latest .net framework, and then try the steps I suggested for the other member, its possible that a previous installation of ATi is causing problems with catalyst. That fix should handle 98% of the problems you can have with ATi drivers.
-
You remember my gpu issue, when ya said I had fried it, that was a time of old installation vs new. I have learnt since then, since then I have been loyal to driver sweeper even though, they say newer installation packages ensure 0% driver conflict.
And I have the latest .NET framework 4.0 -
Hi everyone,
I am using MSI GT727 MS-1722 BIOS V1.1, PM45, P8600, DDR3 1066. Today I get the QX9200 ES version QAVS from my friend but I am not sure its ok or to change my P8600 (which BIOS version I have to get). after that, do I have to mod heatsink for my lappy and how to mod? Thank a lots! -
Simply Get this BIOS : MSi GT725 1.11 BIOS Remember to flash from DOS and not within windows.
And then update CPU.
No HeatSink mod required.
If ya feel the heat is too much, just elevate the laptop with suppoet on four corners and remember to remove the back cover. -
Thank you for your fast response.
I got this BIOS. can you guide me more how to flash from DOS? It has 3 file "A1722IMS.111", "AFU414sD.exe", "flash.bat" and how can I do with that? Thanks! -
Read This BIOS flashing
-
Thank Silicon Chip,
At first BIOS flashed successfully. Tomorrow I will update CPU and ask you more if has problem. Thank you! -
Thx Sili Chip very much! I have updated successfully to Q9200. It runs fine but ... so hot. Can you give me an advice for heat problem. Thanks a lots again!
-
You can do lot, put a thermal paste on the CPU, your options are :
artic sliver 5
OCX Extreme
MX3
Then you can buy a notebook cooler too.
But the fastest and easiest and cheapest way is to remove the back cover of the laptop and raise the laptop by a small height by placing some support on the four corners. -
That sounds like an easy way to bring in more dust.
-
Hey guys, I was in an impulsive mood earlier so i bought 2 of these
THERMALTAKE 80MM MOBILE FAN II USB POWER EXTERNAL CASE on eBay (end time 19-Aug-10 01:07:15 BST)
and was wondering if you have any suggestions about where to place them. I was thinking about putting them on the rear right corner over the vents (heatsink/fan) to suck out hot air.
Also, will this work with our laptop? Nisis PCMCIA USB 2.0 Card: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo
although some of the reviews are questionable.

Hi guys need help, using gt725, today suddenly my lan card seems not working... i touched the panel and the wireless thingy turned blue but it cannot scan any network at all ( im sure the wifi working okay as all the other computers detected like a lot of hot spots )
im wondering if my lan card overheated/ not functioning properly..
if it is, how should i fix it ! urgent thx
-
Try updating the drivers to the newest if that doesnt fix it, then you'll have to physically remove the card.
-
Hey I just fixed my CCC problem, there I was using DriverSweeper and I came across nvraid.sys being installed drivers for chipset.
I know those are raid drivers, but why on a board and a notebook that never even comes close to using nVidia. -
now_here_is_nowhere Notebook Enthusiast
Anyone played SC2 on their gt725 yet? I would love to see some videos or know what settings were used.
-
Hey, So I wrecked my lappy again and need help.
The thing is that my pixelation problem has somehow resurfaced and forcing me to believe that my card is dead
But anyways the real problem is that I had given my laptop for RMA last time and they un-hid the recovery partition named it WinRE and gave drive D.
Now I need to recover my OS and F3 and F8 doesn't work, so any help is appreciated.
-
Automatikjack Notebook Evangelist
Pixelation, or Artifacting is not a good sign on your screen, it sounds like you got another bum card, I'd say try a reseat and see what happens. As for the OS deal, Is any of your software or anything still on your computer? It's very possible that they wiped your machine and reinstalled the default OS as part of their diagnostics.
-
I believe i was vague in explaning my prob.
First time, long back i had artifact/pixelation prob coupled with bsod atikmpag.sys.
I rma'd the laptop, jerks there at service centre just re-installed windows(now i realize they blew off my recovery partition). After i gt it back home, it again had same prob. Bt it got fixed with clean driver installation.
Nw again after i updated to 10.6 i lost my ccc as well as this prob re-appeared. I updated to 10.7, no benefit. Then according to amd forums i cleaned ati files from windows/assembly. This fixed ccc, bt pixelation is more prominent.
So right now i have a partition named winRE which is the only way to recover yet I dont knw how to use it. I still have my original card(was never replaced).
Please explain reseat.
Jack you hv'been a lot of help
-
Dont worry its fixed, still dont know what it was, tried to install win 7, it was unsuccessful but then it reverted back and suddenly it was all okay. I checked the CCC and overdrive was locked again(meaning some thing fixed registry) and I guess it was registry mess that was causing problems.
-
Hey, does anyone's "Num Lock" illuminated indicator not...illuminate? Few weeks back it was starting to come on dim...now it doesn't illuminate at all
-
Double post.
-
Yeah its meant to indicate when you hit the key, odds are you've a dead bulb if you've seen it meet its ultimate demise
.
-
Automatikjack Notebook Evangelist
you, my friend, must have done a helluva lot of numlocking... Or you may have just gotten the one in a million LED's that actually burn out... DemikoD, what are you using to oc? just the turbo button, or rmclock?
-
now_here_is_nowhere Notebook Enthusiast
Hey, my turbo light panel thing doesn't light up anymore and I cant use it either, it doesnt respond to me touching it. Does anyone know how to fix it?
-
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
Try re-seating the cable that the panel uses.
-
Yep, if it doesn't work try an ecware flash,
If that doesnt work, maybe a dead pannel so drown it in water! muahaha and use morals values for kicking in turbo boost OC
.
-
 That's just it...I never really used it. If I never needed it, I would turn it off. Mystery I guess. I'm using the turbo button OCed to 24% and RAM at 800. I use RMClock to lower the multipliers, that's about it.
P.S. Sorry for the late reply. -
Automatikjack Notebook Evangelist
Np man, I haven't been around too much anyways lately, been off exploring all over the UK, Scotland was epic!.
As for the turbo button, try and see if you have the latest version of scm and that it IS working in the background, that'd probably be the first thing I'd suggest before you tear your computer apart.
