I think you are having the very frequent "unidentified network" vista issue? No?
I had exactly the same problem with mine. Drove me NUTS!!! Unfortunately, this problem is caused by multiple problems and so everyone has a different solution. There is one way to fix it for everyone though. Get on another computer with wireless connected (can be XP, doesn't matter), hit windows key + r (run), and type in cmd (command prompt). then type into command prompt "ipconfig". All you need then it to open the network and sharing centre (on the laptop that isn't working), connect to the desired wireless connection, click view status, click properties (not wireless properties), double click internet protocol version 4. Now, you're going to have to enter all these values manually. First, the subnet mask will always be 255.255.255.0, now look at the other computer where you typed in ipconfig into command prompt, and get the default gateway and DNS server off there (sometimes they're exactly the same). Then you can make up an IP address for yourself, the first three values are going to be the same as the default gateway and the DNS, the fourth value must be between 1 and 254, and one that is not in use. Write these numbers down, because every time you want to connect to another network, you'll have to switch back to automatically find the IP addresses. Hope this helps!

Just thought I better clarify something in my last post, PMS is "priority mail service" lol
-
Mine was priority too. Took nearly 4 weeks to get here after it left the US.
Any luck sjafi? -
Oh, and wheels, thanks for the feedback too...
-
Mine is accually Express "EMS" which in a post I was reading from a guy that ships from the US often is often slower than PMS, as I said in an earlier post, god help me if it is.
-
Your welcome, good service and thanks for letting me know about the problem with the touch pad waring.
To all you other guys, you should think seriously about getting the touchpad cover that Lambofreak is selling, I figure that if you don't you may find out the hard way that you should have, and then it will be to late. Would be useless getting one after the ware is already showing. -
ohhh... im blushing
, thanks wheels...
and for $5AUD? bargain

Just saw this and I can't agree more.. Honestly I just had a friend come over and I showed him my 3dmark06 scores (on gaming mode) which new score; 9863 3DMarks (which is weird cause I scored like 8.7k with turbo mode on.. Oh well maybe I had something running in the background). Anyway I gave him the program and went over to his room to run on his laptop (Some Toshiba with a 9600 GT) and he only scored 4,8xx. Throughout the graphic tests the 4850 was at least 30 frames per second ahead of the 9600 GT. Just thought it was good to comment on.
Computer is still great by the way - have no need to overclock or even mess with any settings at the moment. Happy as can be! Almost done with Prototype I fear.. Farcry 2 is next
.
Edit: Saw another post of a guy from the Navy who might be regretting his choice of the Q9000....
DO NOT REGRET IT! LOL!
I initially thought that at first also and to be brutally honest this processor is suprising the hell out of me. Although the "turbo" mode only clocks all 4 cores to 2075 mhz (each), I haven't even needed to use the turbo mode at all. I just click it to "gaming" mode and it runs everything without any issues
! Been running Prototype and Oblivion IV at max settings w/ AA always at max and resolution at 1920x1080 and I've had no lag at all. I thought I had some lag in prototype so I jacked the resolution down to check it out and it does the same thing (the game just slows down for effects - slow mo whatever). But yeah the computer has had no problems and has been extremely awesome.
Just visited a friend (read above) and he's upset that he didn't save a little more money and buy this (he didn't wanna wait for a laptop so he went to the PX and bought the most expensive one). My 3dmark06 was 9863 without turbo on. Definately good enough for what you want to do with it
.
-
I'm not sure. It didn't work when I assigned it an IP address, but I then disabled windows firewall and so far, so good. So that may narrow the problem down, but i'll have to log some more time to find out.
Thanks guys. -
What exactly is it saying?

Hey guys my GT725-074 is coming in the mail from Newegg tomorrow. I'm a huge noob to a lot that has to do with computers so I had a few questions. I'm just gona start small, which version of Vista do you guys recommend I get since the MSI only comes with the 32 bit OS? I have read further back in the forum that you should just torrent Vista if you don't have a disc (which I don't), but I was also wondering will I need to burn it to a DVD to run it and install the new OS? Also how would I go about burning it on a DVD? If someone could help me or post somewhere legit I can go for instructions that would be awesome....Anyways great thread though guys I was very excited when I found this after I ordered my computer, keep it up!
-
Welcome to the thread, all your answers should already be here, and in the likely case they're not, feel free to ask. Wait, you're saying you've already done that? Ok then, obviously the best version of Vista to use is ultimate 64bit, but I'd be completely satisfied with Home premium 64bit. When you download a copy of vista (torrent should be fine). What you've downloaded should be a .iso file. Burn this to a DVD, done. Congrats on the buy though, you've got one great laptop heading your way!
-
thanks all :]
yeah world in conflict. does that play well? it looks pretty wicked.
won't recall then. hope developers will make more use of the quadcores in the future tho :]
what games do you play on yours? -
well im doing nothing it just freezes on turbo mode with 2.9 or 3.91 ghz doesnt even bsod just freezes, ram is still at 677 it does not freeze on 16% or 2.7 ghz i also have a laptop cooler that is really good my laptop does not run hot, i just need a faster processor cause Cryostasis only uses one core unfortunately. But as I said it bsods on anything, my comp also BSODS on 550/900 mhz gpu:/.
edit: heres a pic of what it does when it freezes, its this or i just cant do anything on my desktop at 2.9 oc or 3.1 oc
now hl2.exe error with TF2 -
So have people been installing a 64bit OS on their gt725s? Does everything still work? (turbo etc)
-
If you are still having problems accessing the router from the other pcs I looked it up for you, type 192.168.1.1 in iexplorer. You will then be asked for the admin user name and password. once you are in there you can find information like the wpa key. Make sure you have that entered in your laptop correctly.
Hope this helps. -
Hey Lambofreak, I got new updates on my tracking,
*Arrived abroad
*Into foreign customs
*Out of foreign customs
Any day now I think.
-
that looks like a classic bad video memory picture. (your gpu is defective)
play here for details
http://www.playtool.com/pages/artifacts/artifacts.html
my guess is your GPU's Memory or GPU is burnt and is no longer a viable part send back for repairs there is nothing you can do to fix this.
If you can play games without turbo and no overclock then obviously you have a card that does not overclock. (luck of the draw. not all cards can be overclockable and there are no guarantees that a card will overclock)) as to why this is happening when you overclock the cpu it must be either communication on the bus between cpu and PCI-E or PCI-E to GPU -
i would revert everything back to default. Drivers, OS, BIOS, , memory timings(bad idea in the first place), and Card settings. then work up on the drivers and getting OS patched back up to date. then see if you can change the OC setting (if it crashes again you just can't do it with this model. its not defective its just 'sensitive' then) then overclock the card. (if it crashes here its most probably a very sensitive card that disagrees with overclocking. Its not really defective just barely meets spec's)

I can't find GT725 anywhere in UK,every store i checked seems to be out of stock, does anyone know a place that have them in stock?
-
It pains me to see people trying to push their GT725's to the edge. This laptop does have a turbo button. Yes, you can overclock the video card in CCC. However, people need to keep this in mind. This laptop is a gaming laptop. Not an overclocking laptop. it uses The Laptop CPU with a laptop cooling system that is shared between GPU and CPU. Yes the MSI guys did an awesome job with their cooling and it easily handles the heat. If you want to overclock and push a gaming laptop don't buy a GT725 or any of its variants. Buy a sager. it uses a desktop CPU and GPU its got a very impressive cooling system designed to be abused by people who don't care if they smoke a $900 graphics card. It weighs in at a ton for a reason its designed for people who are never satisfied with what they own. Its engineering is impressive and you pay for that privilege. Its one thing to tweak to get the most bang for the buck. Its hard to feel sorry for anyone that tries to go out of spec and they toast a good laptop in the process. My apologies if this seems like I am venting (which i am) its just a laptop really isn't a desktop when it comes to cooling and overclocking and such practices one must bear in mind you can destroy it easily. I apologize if I have upset anyone its not my intention.
-
yes it is possible. somewhere in this post is a guide to flashing the GPU's bios to tell the system its not a mobile part but a desktop Radeon 4850. that way you get access to higher clocks in CCC (just watch your temps carefully the cooling system struggles at this point (i'd avoid using furmark(not futuremark) at desktop timings since i am pretty sure it would cook the GPU a few minutes into the stress test.)
-
I run World In Conflict at 1920x1200 with most settings on high, although i have turned AA down as it gets a bit laggy (world in conflict is a resource hog). I also play fallout 3 on highest, farcry 2 on high (it goes up to 'ultra' but you don't see much difference from high to ultra, so i just turn the shadows up to very high and leave the rest on high, and it looks amazing, it is like the african version of crysis in terms of graphics)
also play COD4 on highest, Supreme Commander on highest with a 22inch monitor plugged in as well (sup. commander supports dual monitors and is optimized for quad-core!) also play Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway, which runs really well and looks amazing. Also play company of heroes etc, (i could go on for hours but i will stop now)

A sager is really just a reseller of XXODD. You can just order them there.
-
So ? does anyone know ?
-
Laptops Direct? That's where I bought mine. There's a refurb on there at the moment.
-
Laptopsdirect doesn't have a new one either
too bad i was just going to order
-
Sorry but this is inaccurate, the machine is designed for overclocking, MSI designed there mainboards, cards and components, the lot for overclocking, thats how they are nationally recognised.
Not just that, the single fan that runs in the MSI is equivalent in cooling to say the sager laptop with the desktop processors...and 4 fans, its alot quieter, we have no problem running and OCing a qx9300 with the cooling paste changed.
The GPU can also be pushed 20% past its CCC limits, its been tested, proven and has no fault with stability or cooling, people do not agree with the single fan pipe setup, but if a q9000 can sit at 66C overclocked at 2.4ghz under 100% load, and the GPU can sustain clocks of 570/1125 simltaneously, then i do not believe that this machine is under capable, and from what i hear, sager have poorly designed there HDD on a model, there i7 machine runs at 80C max load with 4 fans on the trot, thats what i call poorly designed, sure i7 is alot, but its quite pointless, and for the price you pay for machines, its either a case of getting bang for the buck, or totally ripped off.
Now the asus w90 runs with its configuration of dual 4870 and q9000, the q9000 can sustain core clocks of 2.8ghz and the 4870 in sli can be pushed a bit. The asus w90 keeps temps under 60C all the time, and the GPU just under 70C, thats what i call decent design, but i wouldnt buy a sager. There are a few good sager models though.
Also, the OCZ (overclock laptops) have northbridge problems, the statement overclock laptops were designed for overclocking but they have huge problems at there task because of northbridge, itl stutter at any sight of a quad core.
Sorry for venting also, but i stand where i do because i know how well MSI machines can be pushed (8 year MSI owner here
and frikin proud )

Darth Bane Dark Lord of the Sith
My gx720 has no complaints OC my t9900 to 3.67ghz and it runs very cool too, even with the video card OC as well. I don't know how much different the cooling is between the gx720 and the gt725, but the gx720 is definitely a good overclocking notebook. -
Cool thanks blade, I play alot of those games. plus alot of RPG's like oblivion etc but I doubt I will have any problems with that. Pisses me off I can't use it until another 16 days
I think we're both dutch btw. Where did you buy yours?
I ordered mine on alternate, found out later it was about 100eu cheaper on azerty. :[
Oh and cat, you mind if I pm you sometimes for some questions about overclocking a msi? -
Hey guys I have two questions. First since the quad core 725 is pretty much only available now, does it take a performance hit because it is only 2.0ghz, or does the fact that it is quad core make up for the slower clock speed than the core 2 duo 725? Also is there anymore information out right now about the 727. Will that be definitely be using a core 2 duo processor? Thanks
-
There is a small performance difference between the dual and quad core models in single threaded applications (obviously because of the difference in clock speeds), however the quad will give more improvements for newer/future games that are optimized for quad (Supreme Commander), and 2.0ghz is enough to run single threaded apps smoothly.
As for the 727, the only real benefit is the ddr3 memory, and that could be argued that it is not infact a benefit (latency etc, i don't have time to explain now). I have not read any information about what processor will come with it but i'm would imagine it will be Centrino 2 or quad.
Blazin -
So should I just rerformat everything?
edit : the gpu is actually doing fine oc by 50 mhz now
but i didnt save my windows vista to a disk without anything on it, would it even be safe to reformat,, and also are you saying i can return this laptop for a new one?
-
Anyone had any problems yet with their computers being "plugged in, not charging"?
Just got off work today and noticed that it wasn't charging my battery. Just curious if anyone else had a similiar experience. -
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
It very much depends on what you're doing.
Professional applications that use more than 2 cores will be stronger on the quad core overall, however a lot of current games and programmes barely use 2 cores, let alone 4, so whilst the quad will have a longer potential lifespan, due to the discrepancies in the core speed, for the majority of games, the 2.53Ghz dual core will be faster; especially if you play MMOs, as they tend to eat CPU runtime for breakfast, WoW in particular being badly optimised in light of this.
When you combine this with the turbo function, and end up with a 3Ghz dual core, you end up with a significantly more powerful machine in comparison to the quad core while gaming in 99% of the current gaming market, which is only really now beginning to massively accept dual core technology.
Whilst Quad Core is the future, whether it will be of major relevance to most gaming and day-to-day applications during the lifetime of the laptop is debateable, the only programmes which really flourish on quads tend to be professional/workstation applications (music production/encoding) or games either designed with quad in mind (Supreme Commander at the moment, using the multi-core optimiser), or badly optimised console ports (GTA4; raise your hand).
For this reason I'm waiting for the next batch of dual core models to come round, as for 90% of your day to day usage, the dual core model will be faster. I spoke to one of the CA's at OverclockersUK, and they said the next batch of the dual core models was expected in the next few weeks.
That said, as a workstation model, the quad powered laptop will last a bit longer, and will have a little more freedom when it comes to multi-tasking. Either will be fine if you're not the most demanding user, and both machines have a lifespan of approximately 2 years. General day to day programmes will be fine on both the dual/quad core model; neither are slow!
The person who wants really high end workstation quad core performance will likely be prepared to wait and pay for the I7 based laptops anyway

If the laptop is turned on, apparently some modern laptops are known to often do this, to prevent lots of 'micro-charges' and thus save the batteries longterm lifespan.
If not try disconnecting the battery, and AC adaptor from the laptop for about 30 seconds or so, and then plugging them both back in
-
Yeah I'm aware that a lot of modern PC's end up doing this but I started thinking about the problem and tried something.
I unplugged my AC adapter and played a game until I got down to 90% battery and then plugged it back in. At first it wasn't charging and then it started to charge after reading the % on the battery.
Since this laptop comes with a LiPo battery (Lithium Polymer) it cannot be overcharged. (I play with R/C cars a lot and I use both electric and nitro and one of the most sought after batteries in the R/C world are the LiPo batteries but they're quite expensive).
Overcharging a LiPo battery will lead to the battery blowing up. So my guess is that the computer senses the batteries % and stops it from being overcharged. Just a theory though, nothing to back up my claims.
-
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
You cannot return the laptop if it will not overclock the graphics card stably, as overclocking is generally considered your own risk.
That said, if the laptop's turbo function causes the same issues and isn't stable, whilst the laptop GPU is stock clocked, then you can return the laptop for repairs; as the turbo function is a key design feature of the laptop; by not being able to remain stable at 'stock clocks'/standard clocks, then the laptop could be deemed as unsuitable for purpose, and not up to design spec
QUICK QUESTION FOR OTHERS
- Does this laptop still allow you to keep the CPU/GPU set to full speed and power under battery (obviously with massively reduced battery life), like my old laptop on vista or does it downclock while on battery and not allow you to change it?
If it does run allow you to full speed while on battery if you ask it to (no downclocking), what's the battery life like when gaming on the 2.53Ghz Core2/9-cell battery combo like? -
Wow aprroximately 2 years. I would hope at least 4 years. 2 years is really short. I know technology increase, but I still have a computer I've had for 4 years and it runs fine. Maybe laptops are different, but I would think with the more expensive price tags when looking at comparable desktops, I dont want to pay 1500 for something to be dead in 2 years.

Thanks for the reply, I'm wondering what you guys recommend, should I go ahead and do the Windows 7 or stay with Vista? Is there a performance increase with using Windows 7? -
Lifespan cant be determined...Its how you handle it, ive had laptops going after 7 years.
Full power cant be used on battery either i dont think, but im yet to test to be honest.
MSI tested quad v duo machines with the 725 (not 729) they saw 2 fps drops in games with single thread, your best going with quad, a because the difference in single is so small.
And b its future proofing because more devs are using multicore because half of todays useless games are xbox ports lol.
And yeah, only returns can be if the CPU oc feature isnt working, thats one of the machines main + points.
As for battery life, depending on the game, i'd say an hour tops? It is usable though, i can play fallout 3 with no spikes etc on high performance battery.
Im happy to hear of OCUK restocking, i may try and get refunded for my machine as there are a few problems arrising, and in light of that, i find i do not need all the power at my disposal lol.
Im also curios about native res' i really need to understand why people favour higher. -
Hey Hey, it's here
-
Congrats, hows it workin? Bet your thrilled with it. Also, does using the eco button to switch to gaming mode increase framerates at all, does anyone know?
-
Do you mind explaining the problems arising with your laptop and what's making your decision on wanting to change to a different model laptop?
I personally don't favor higher-res either, but I figure if it runs it in high-res why not go for it?
My main reason for picking up the 212US version was for the Quad-Core not for the 1920x1080.
Oh, succeeded in making my laptop lag even on lower resolutions (1200xwhatever) lol. Glided over a military base with 100+ units in it, and used a special devestator move to destroy these filters that explode and shoot a blood looking substance everywhere. Talk about 1-2 frames per second for about 8 seconds. Lol
-
Still getting it setup. But I love it so far. I don't know where some people in other posts get that it's ugly. It's one of the best looking laptops I've seen.
One thing though, I was under the impression it came with a gaming mouse, or maybe thats just the UK version.
And hey, no duties. -
No duties? Cheering. I agree that its one of the best looking laptops out there; elegant, yet classy (that was my formal voice), just watch that the paint around the moniter doesn't wear off, mine looks crap after only a month. Yeah I expected mine to come with the gaming moues as well, but you have to buy the UK version. I was in Sydney though, looking through a couple of computer shops, and they actually sell this mouse (starmouse GS-502 its called) for $50AUD, so I picked one up, works great!
-
What I'd love to see is MSI recall all the GT725s, and replace that stupid painted panel around the moniter with just a black perspex panel. The quality of that paint is horrible. Take the pictures I posted about a week back, and times by 2. Is anyone else having the same problem?

Hey guys, Lambofreak helped me a little yesterday telling me that I needed to dl Vista and put it on a dvd to upgrade to 64 bit. I have been trying to read more online about it and a lot of places are talking about me having to back up files and restore them once i install the 64 bit and yada yada. I just got my computer today and haven't put anything on it yet because I know I want to upgrade to 64 bit. I'm wonder what will happen to all the ATI stuff and programs that came with my laptop today if I simply burn a 64 bit Vista ISO and boot up my computer and install it? Sorry im such a noob but after reading so many conflicting things online i dont want to screw up my laptop.
-
You got a CD with your computer that had all your drivers on it, correct? You'll be fine. If you don't feel safe enough with that take all your files and put them on an external hard drive so you have them just incase you do need them.
-

Okay thank you I didn't know that's what that CD was for.
