Where do I see my driver version? I pulled down something Windows 7 Update said was newer, and according to CCC the Catalyst Version is 09.6.

I installed the hacked .inf file, but that just bogged down my performance, but I updated through Windows 7 and all the performance issues I had were solved.

well i have a 75-74 dual core and man it wont let me do 24% and rarely lets me do 20% its so bizarre i wanted to update the bios for stability reasons , how would i make the usb a system disk, and im thinking about reformatting to 64 bit, with an illegal download of it or something.

If your Catalyst Version is 9.6, its likely your driver is 9.6 as well. The driver Windows update says is newer is probably only because you're using a modded .inf file.

To make a USB stick into a system disk (so you can boot from it), you'll just have to google "how to usb bootable" or something, I'm sorry I don't know. But you've got the right motives. I've never touched the BIOS because my computer is totally stable, so if yours isn't, I'd be looking into updating the BIOS too... I just hope you have some success and am sorry I can't help.

Actually, is your RAM set to 667mhz or 800mhz? Set it to 667 and then try it again, because, when you press the turbo button, it actually overclocks the RAM as well as the CPU. I found a pdf as well here. Or you could just ring MSI and get them to talk you through it.

Do you know if they're getting in the same model (Pp500 etc)? Also, will it come with the bag & mouse?

good to hear that the laptop isn't out of stock everywhere.. :)

EDIT - Question! I'm having a bit of trouble deciding between the P8600 and P9500 verisons to purchase. I know the 9500 has a bit more grunt, but is it enough to warrant the price difference? Would the slower 8600 bring down the overall performance by a large degree? I can see that they're close on processor speed, but that 3MB difference in cache looks significant.

    decisions, decisions :)

Hi there, the model I asked about was specifically the P9500 model, I have no idea when exactly it will be in though :( I understand all of these come with the mouse/bag :)

I think the reason everyone is out of stock is they're probably waiting on the next batch, as they're out at the UK suppliers.

The 9500 will be that bit nippier and last that bit longer (speed wise), however it depends on the price difference. As I'm using it as a desktop replacement, the extra grunt will be appreciated. I haven't seen the P8600 models in stock either! The 9500 model will perform on par with a desktop Core2 chip, well in CPU terms at least :)

Its not that I don't know how to flash the bios, its that I've never made a USB stick bootable. And if you actually read my previous post, you'll realize that I posted a link to the MSI pdf tutorial.

Anyone that wants to flash from usb etc please use this and not usb boot apps from elsewhere. This is designed for MSI only, unlike the apps you may download.. Pick selection one (after downloading the bios archive you want to flash).. 100% successful so far and allows a back up from a bad flash. If it doesn't work the first time use either of the Fix my usb options (xp or vista) and try again and it should work . Run as admin for vista.

Safe as houses, any problems give me a shout.

PLEASE make sure you read the messages and flash plugged in etc :) You need to register to the forum to read the links and download the app but it will be worth it. I take no responsibility for bad flashes.. As i have said so far 100% successful and backup recoveries possible unlike other apps you might use. I will help where i can but if your system is running fine you probably shouldnt flash unless you know what you are doing :)

Ok, now I downloaded a .torrent that ended up stuffing my comp. Doesn't matter though, gives me an excuse to upgrade to 64bit. Now I've got the intel chipset drivers, vga drivers, bluetooth & touchpad drivers. Can anyone else think of anything I'm missing?

Hey guys, I got a few questions for everyone.

    1. I saw a few pages back that MSI released some new drivers for the 4850 but on their website it says that its for 32 bit vista.. will these work on 64 bit vista?

    2. To install these MSI drivers do you have to uninstall the current ATI drivers? I have the original drivers on my computer still because I tried to install Catalyst 9.6 and it said everything worked but then it didn't show up in the system tray or anywhere, only in the Program Files (x86).

    3. If anyone could tell me why Catalyst 9.6 did that it would be greatly appreciated.

    4. I thought there was a way to choose if you overclock your CPU by 16%, 20%, etc. In my system tray there is the system control manager but I can't open it up and do anything with it. Any suggestions?

    1. Yes, all MSI drivers on their site work in 32 and 64 bit for Vista and W7

    2. You should, yes... and unistalling CCC wouldn't be a bad idea either

    3. You need to use the CCC from the official MSI package, you can use drivers from ATI as they are released using tester's method (see previous posts)

    4. Go into bios settings by pressing DEL as the computer is booting up (on the MSI splash screen). In the BIOS hold Ctrl/Alt/Ins. Go to the advanced tab and choose the overclocking rate.

Guys, I know I said I was considering Vista 64 bit, but since Windows 7 64 bit is pretty much free right now (RC1, right?), I might just get that instead. However, is it compatible enough with a bunch of things, or would it be better to dual boot into the stock Vista 32 bit and Windows 7? And how easy is it to set up a dual boot for Windows 7 right off the bat?

That score was with 9.4's, a 24% turbo, GPU Overclock to 550/900, and some planets aligning. With 9.6's and 20% turbo I get around 10.5k. I don't actually game with my GPU overclocked though... I just don't need it. My troubles with the 24% turbo didn't show up in 3dmark, but when it started to cause problems in games I dialed it back.

Can't agree with this. Always use the supplied discs first. Once your happy all the machines internal components are working properly, then start updating drivers, at a time from the manufacturers website.

Oh I see, well yeah I agree with your method now, I'm not gona overclock my GPU and will just run the CPU at a 16% OC... I was playing L4D earlier and even as a notoriously ugly game it looked quite impressive with everything maxed running at 1680x1050. The 4850 has more than exceeded my performance standards and there is still optimization to be done within future drivers I presume. Now all I NEED is Diablo III :D !!!! I've noticed how amazing this laptops cooling is too now that I've gotten it off of sitting on my desk and I put it on a cooling pad. I put some little rubber pads on my old 15 inch pad since the rubber feet of the lappy hang off of it. I think it hanging off the ends may help cool it even more. My 4850 hardly ever gets above 70C when I'm gaming. It's really amazing. If you couldn't tell, I'm just thoroughly impressed with this laptop.

I kind of agree with this. Overclock and mess with the bios if you know exactly what your doing, I know how to do this, but choose not too since it seems rather like putting a nitrous kit in a Ferrari, ie: a bit pointless at this stage of the machine life cycle. Still, just my two pence worth.

When I sent my msi mouse back (it was faulty) all they wanted was my serial number, and a photo/scan of my original invoice from where i purchased the 725 (in my case it was scan.co.uk). I have not yet filled in the warranty card and they did not want it from me for the mouse. However i do not know if this is the case with the actual laptop, or if it is just for accessories (there is only a 2 or 3 month warranty for accessories - i think)

Does anyone know if you have to send off your warranty card and if so, does it have to be within a certain timescale from the original purchase.. because it has been more than 30 days since i bought mine.

I have upgraded today to a new driver from MSI, however since the upgrade (which was performed with Uninstall-boot, Driver Sweaper-boot, Registry Cleaner-boot) I get on every boot a message "Task Scheduler Engine has stopped working" and PC slows down for few moments, anyone else getting this?
After I deinstall driver problem is gone, also when I go back to January Driver no problem at all... right now i have the old MSI driver and no problems... I tried several installs and reinstalls and clean installations with new one, Vista is freshly installed as well.

I guess since the current MSI driver is currently up to 05/14/2009, 8.593.1.1000 (release candidate) driver version and the ATI official driver is now up to 9.6, which includes improved optimisation in current gen games.

This explains why some of us are dead set on hacking the official ATI version so that it works under the current MSI CCC and MSI CC,

I got my machine late last week and am loving it so far. I haven't had a chance to do much with it yet, since I've been busy, but will hopefully get to play around with it soon.

Crysis ran incredibly smoothly at Native Res and High settings. I didn't try Very High. I didn't have FRAPs set up at the time either. I did get annoyed with the placement of that function key on the bottom left, where I'm used to the control key, but I'll get used to it.

Out of the box with no tweaking the machine scored close to 5K in Vantage which I think is pretty standard. That was with no Turbo and no GPU overclock.

Sounds like people have done some great work modifying the latest Catalyst drivers. I likely won't play around with them unless I need to though. Right now the machine seems to run very well with the older drivers.

    1. Nope, I tried both recently. I got about 200 points higher in 3dmark06 with the 9.6 drivers from ATI

    2. I wouldn't call them hacked. I download them directly from ATI and then install them manually instead of using the install manager... With 9.6, I manually changed a line which only served to label the GPU correctly... quite far from hacking.

Depends. the latest ATI Radeon Driver version 9.6 6/15/2009 has improvements in the graphics pipeline and where there has been previous CPU limit.

Documented so far Company of Heroes gets a 25% performance boost, Crysis Warhead 11%, reporting higher on some posts I've read and World in Conflict gets up to 30% lift.

The problem is as far as I'm aware is that the latest MSI version dosn't include the 9.6 feature improvements.

You have to trick the MSI CCC to work with a modified version of the 9.6 driver. I've tried this, it does work, but for some reason the MSI control Centre isnt working quite as it should. I can run the CPU boost, but I've no idea what's running in CCC, so still can't resolve this but hey. Lifes too short.

I'm running in Win 7 64 Bit, and although the MSI CC isn't functioning I can at least run the Win 7 9.6 driver.

No I was just saying that when MSI comes out with new drivers those are going to be primarily what I use. I thought I read a few people in here that said the 9.6's boosted their performance in dx9 but really messed up dx10 games or the other way around, so until a driver comes out that is super stable I'm stickin with the MSI releases.

I have 200 pt more in graphic score of Vantage wich is a dx10 test with the 9.6 driver so it s definitely better: the Mobility 4850 is like the desktop one with lower frequencies, so there isn t any problem. And the CCC detects that you are running a notebook, so you have the notebook option :)

Interesting tidbit from Tom's Hardware review about the GT725:

"Encountered by problems with these specific test results, we retested the GT725 and found that at these settings its graphics processor overheated. Further tests revealed that the fan was not responding appropriately to GPU temperature increase. The case was also venting more air from the CPU sink than the GPU sink, indicating a possible problem with MSI's single-fan design. The graphics unit's thremal-throttle condition may have been overlooked by the manufacturer, since it appears to occur only at detail levels that are beyond smooth playability even for an ice-cold Radeon Mobility HD 4850."

It wouldn't hurt to have GT725 users run some GPU stress tests with HWmonitor and GPU-Z running to observe the results.
