Easy there hehe, there are some great tools like that available :D

Although ill stick to my brute force driver shoving until it works tactic.
I can actually install the GPU driver..LOL

Im about to hit 64bit, that should bring all to 5.9 in windows experience except the 5400HDD which sits at 5.6 :( Will upgrade in the near future.

Windows 7 hit 7' on some things hehe.

My machine came with a poor hdd, granted it runs as cool as ice cream :D
Your lucky you have 7200 rpm :p

Ive just completed the install of 64bit vista (the oem key works with this =) )

    Installed all drivers,
    Maybe some software.

Now i am running defrag and will optimise my machine soon enough!

No, some come with a 500GB 5400RPM drive which is likely either a seagate momentus, or a Western Digital Scorpio Blue...if it's the Scorpio Blue its actually pretty surprisingly close in performance, the Momentus less so.

Exactly, :) i hope SSD go big mainstream though, that would be cool, and if there cost dropped, would be awesome.

For the advent models we have 250gb toshiba drivers, there ok i guess but some more speed would be nice :)

Might try my hand with 8gb of ram.

Well the Intel mainstream SSDs are due out in the next couple of months, and they're meant to be heavily aimed at cutting costs :)

If you want more speed now, consider grabbing a WD Scorpio, the blue and the black are both a nice bit faster than the toshiba from what I've seen, Black is available for £50 for 320GB, and the blue has 500GB for £60.
The Black IS faster, but the Blue is surprisingly quick for a 5400RPM drive, so either are valid choices.

I guess windows experience index is not the most reliable lol

my friend got some ddr2 ram running at 800, replacing his 667, and it the index went down lol

The reason the harddrive looks so small is the os is put on a 44GB partitioned C: drive and D: gets the rest of the 320GB.

Don't forget to run it with turbo on and power option set to high performance:

Also, this setting in device manager for disk drives might squeeze a little more out.

    My HDD scores 5.7, its a Western Digital 320gb @ 7200rpm.

Its my CPU that drags my score down though, 5.3 it scores. Does turning the turbo on increase that score?

It sure does, but even at 2.88 my P8600 only hits 5.6... still the weakest link. Good thing (1) I could upgrade to a Q9100 as soon as I'm out of warranty and (2) WEI means absolutely nothing

I wouldn't be surprised if upgrading the CPU didn't void the warranty. I just got an email to say that replacing the thermal paste doesn't void the warranty. :D

we have exactly the same laptop with wd 320gb 7200rpm. how you take 5.8 in hdd ? i take 5.6...you have better drivers? oc smthing?? help me :)
also we have to replace the thermal paste regularly? i mean once a year its good? ok it depends from the use of the laptop but say 5-10 hours per day?
    without oc q9000..thanks

I second that question. I'm looking at replacing my thermal paste with Arctic Silver 5 that I bought some time ago. Does anyone know if AS5 goes off after a certain period of time? And do I apply it to CPU and GPU? And how long until I have to reapply?

And if I may ask nacr05, what was the deciding factor in your decision to buy an M17x? I considered the same thing, but decided against on the grounds of portability.

Like most thermal pastes it can seperate a little. If you've had it a while, I'd suggest squeezing out a bit of the tube, as what tends to happen with the pastes is you'll get a layer of oil seperate away. Once its back to looking like normal colour and consistancy you should be fine, you may find you really don't have to squeeze much away, depends on how long you've had it; if you're that worried, go buy a fresh tube of AS5, OCZ Freeze or Tuniq TX-3 as sometimes peace of mind is invaluable :).
You can apply it to both GPU and CPU, both run pretty hot; and decent thermal paste is nearly always going to be better than stock paste (sometimes in the region of 5-10 degrees C, although usually closer to 5), and you don't NEED to reapply it, unless you break the seal by removing th heatsinks again, or if the first application goes badly (too much, bad contact, air bubbles locked in etc)

A small half pea sized blob should be enough, as effectively you want it to fill in any tiny gaps, and give as much metal to metal cover as possible, you DON'T want to have a massive layer of paste in there, it will make things worse, the pressure of the heatsink on the CPU SHOULD spread that tiny amount of paste out over a surprisingly wide area; as it's only meant to fill the tiny cracks for metal to metal, not create a real layer between parts.

Artic Silver 5 does have a recommended curing time (basically be using the computer then letting it cool, to allow it to be heated and cooldown repeatedly etc) of approximately 200 hours before it reaches its best temps.

    http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.p...sk=view&id=150&Itemid=62&limit=1&limitstart=1

This article has some application suggestions that might help you :)

hmm, well the frame rates are really fluent on this screen, and i know you can get external USB screen/box things if i recall, so yeah, it should be possible.

Problem is driver signing in vista is buggy so it needs de-activating each boot :(

If you find one let me know :D

I could use an external small screen for say thermal temps etc, usage, memory all sorts.

one tip, having done this before is to cut out a small piece of thick card with a square cut in the middle about 75% the width of the CPU head. This way you can smooth over with a credit card the right amount of paste. It is possible to apply too much and make a bit of mess, or too little, which would be very bad. I've fried an AMD 64 due to this. The trick is to get even distibution in the middle of the CPU

oh and has anyone had any problems with the 9.6 drivers when connecting an hd tv, because i just plugged in my 22inch hdtv and usually, it goes straight to exteneded desktop at the correct resolution, however i have now tried it 3 times, and both screens stay black, and then eventually it shuts down (not blue screen) and then starts up saying 'windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown blah blah'

Yeah len, i believe the PSP does the screen work while the USB transfers instructions, i may be wrong though, but since USB 2.0 is about 48meg realtime transfer, i suppose it could be rendering via usb, quite good for an old PSP eh?
