About what I observer. The game in my case that really pushes GPU temps for me is S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl, although I think that's more because the engine is not all that well optimized. (Well that and I run a bunch of mods as wel...)

I just really don't play alot of GPU intensive games, e.g. right now I'm playing alot of Mount & Blade(vanilla), then will likely play some mods...

I should also mention that the notebook runs hotter under linux plus power management isn't nearly as good as turbo batt mode, so I get maybe 1h 40m or so of run time v. over 2h with turbo batt.

So what's the verdict on the Zalman 2000? I have one, but I don't think it's doing the job. Most of the air flow seems like it's in the front and not by the GPU, which is obviously where most of the heat is coming from. I'm thinking of getting the Thermaltake CLN0008 now.

Hey Guys, I am looking at changing to Windows 7 64 bit after some positive comments from people on this forum but I want to download the drivers for it first so could someone please point me in the right direction? Someone posted a link to a bunch of them on here once but after crawling through the pages for the last half hour i cant find them! Also is this the easiest way to get these drivers? I think I may have read someone on here saying they just used the driver disk that came boxed with the laptop? is this possible/advised? Anyway, thanks in advance for any help

I'm having problems. I continue to lock up playing COD WAW with the new 9.7 beta drivers. I used the mod driver program and followed everything to the word, but nothing has changed. The date on the driver still says 1/8/09. I uninstalled everything and went by the directions again, but then the driver did not install and ccc is gone too.

Does anyone have any word on the webcam app?

Anyone got any ideas on how to get the media control buttons on the touch pad to be lit up permanently, not just when they have been activated? Would be really handy when playing crappy free MMO's in the dark and listening to my tunes!

They've changed it, no idea why as I was used to the old one, but obviously they wanted a more W7 look; the response was the same when they went to CCC from the old panels about 3/4 years ago, a pain now but everyone got used to it. Im not sure why you modded the betas though, the official 9.7s are out now, think theres some 9.8 betas somewhere mind.

Not sure if theres any differences, minor revisions most likely. You can probably get around the new CCC by finding a copy of the old drivers (9.6), uninstall the current CCC and use the old installer to install the 9.6 CCC

All you need are your drivers, just install w7 and install chipset drivers before everything else.

I had no problem with it.

Cataclysm, you might find it interesting to know by just a 400Mhz CPU overclock, I pushed the vantage GPU score of my M17 to 9350. Looks like theres some definate reserves in these/crossfire that faster CPUs can unleash, beyond just the benefit of a faster CPU or we begin talking overclocking the 4850s. Am hoping for 10+K GPU score once I've got an X9100 and can multi-clock it (taking RAM outside the equation).

Unlocking the potential thats there for free, without reducing the lifespan of the product, or trying to get the equal of a more expensive part, for less. In the right scenarios, like this one, it can make a big difference to performance. There are games now, and games coming that can take advantage of the extra power, in some case it's not lagging at that hectic point in the game, being able to turn up the effects that little more. Either way, its all aimed at extending the useful, and enjoyable, lifespan of your machine, within reason.

What you find useful and enjoyable is up to each person; overclocking is just one way of helping; infact some do it for the challenge. Overclocking a CPU will directly speed up almost anything you do outside of games to; be it driver installs, loading programmes...well you get the idea. There of course are those who take it too far, these are the ones who may inadvertantly damage thier machine.

I'd say your laptop is getting too hot. Mine idles at 48/49 degrees while browsing web, with no cooler, just sitting on the desk. And I have NEVER seen the temp over 83 degrees while playing ANY game. If you're temps are over this while gaming, you should replace the thermal paste.

Also, are 9.7 drivers making a difference in temps? I haven't switched yet.

And I was going to post the tutorial about replacing the thermal paste over the weekend but the photos I took were on my brothers camera which he took over the weekend :(

Mine has a few, and life expectancy/heat do go together. That said; if you're careful, you can often get more performance out of a part, without reducing the lifespan to the point it will effect you.

Ie overclocked CPU A nets your 1Ghz free, but reduces your lifespan by 5 years, from 10 to 5. This might affect you.
Overclocked CPU B only goes up 500Mhz, but only loses 1.5 years off the lifespan. It's lifespan is now 8,5 years. By this time your laptop will have been replaced.

Basically it's all about being careful, and trying to get more performance without overtly reducing the lifespan, this is why I tend to prefer not to overclocking graphics cards, as they operate at higher temps anyway and seem a bit more fragile. On the other side of the coin, I've seen overclocked CPUs last 5+ years with no issues.

It's all about heat and taking precautions, be that not pushing it too far, not wedging loads of extra volts throught, and taking care to keep it cool.

Well its an estimate, an example. Your CPU needs replaced when it dies/errors uncontrollably. Unless overclocked crazily, it tends to be other parts, like the RAM, Motherboard or Graphics cards that die first. Thats one of the reasons MSI have a turbo function that works for the P9500 model. In some circumstances, it can boost performance quite nicely, and modern CPUs are quite hardy.

Thats good news man, if you qx'd up and 4850 flashed, i think 12k barrier can be breached, but its a very risky move :p

But its not needed, 10k gpu on duo core in vantage is very good :D

my gpu idles around 52-54C, in game the most i have seen it is a about 85C.. and i wouldnt worry about changing the thermal paste just because it's slightly hotter than someone elses. You have to take into account the temps of the room and also, 50-55C isn't really a worrying temp for a gpu on a laptop is designed to be overclocked. Sure, there is only one fan, but it is a hell of a lot more powerful than the 3 fans that used to be in my acer aspire (they were all downward facing.. so did very little when sitting on my desk).

Also, you would probably lose your warranty when changing the thermal paste.. so if it aint broken.. dont fix it ;)

I always shut down. I've also customized in the power options control panel, what closing the lid does. I've selected "do nothing", so that when I close the lid, it doens't go to sleep.

They adjust the brightness, as well as the windows visual elements, i.e. the power saver one will disable transparency. I think they also do limit the voltage going to the CPU and GPU. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

That is correct, when i ran 3dmark with power settings on High Performance, i got a higher score than when i ran it with power settings on Balanced.
I think it underclocks the cpu slightly.

If you go into the Ati CCC, and click on PowerPlay, and then press the Eco button (next to turbo) it will change in the CCC, so it can lower the clocks of the gpu aswell.

and dont forget to change your ram from 800 to 667, otherwise it will probably crash when it tries to overclock the ram too much.

darn'st thing... I had to reinstall Win7, managed to catch a pretty unpleasent virus, which required so much messing about in safe mode, I thought I may as well reinstall the OS. Anyhow CCC got automaticaly installed on windows update, including the latest drivers from MSI.

Weird, I was never able to get CCC to install on the previous installation. I've now modified up to 9.7 and everthings working great.
