Crap, I'm getting a "display driver has stopped working and has recovered" all the time while playing games. It's annoying, cuz the game keeps crashing  . I'm scared because thats what happened before my XPS M1730 died

GPU is only running at 70 degrees so its not overheating. I might try updating to the 9.7 drivers, see if that does anything.

I'm on 1.0U and my Futuremark is around 5700, so a pretty similar result.

As long as my games run stable, which touch wood they all do, I'm not too fussed.

I don't know what's going on, but when I download the zip file it hangs for a few minutes and says starting download. Then after it completes it's empty and can't be opened.

XoticPC has it still on preorder though...

There is no eta on the quad core model at this time, only the GT729-248US. This is the WSXGA+ with the P8700, due early to mid september.

This post is to instruct all on how to apply thermal paste onto the CPU and GPU surfaces, and will be included in my signature.

Please note that I accept no responsibility for anything going wrong with your computer, and remember to ALWAYS read the instructions that come with the brand of thermal paste you choose to use.

Please also note what you are hoping to accomplish. You are trying to create as maximum a contact patch between your CPU/GPU core and the heatsink, filling all of the microscopic valleys, to give you the greatest heat dispersion possible, thus reducing temperatures.

    1. Make sure you have permission from MSI to undertake this task, then it won't void your warranty ;) .

    2. (See Pic 1) Get your tools ready. I'm using Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste, Arcticlean thermal paste remover (for getting rid of the old stuff), Arcticlean surface purifier, a knife (for spreading the thermal paste), and an LCD wipe (for getting rid of the old thermal paste, as well as wiping off any excess. This can be any lint free cloth. This is for 2 reasons: lint cloths create static, which will harm your computer, and they produce dust, which will reverse the effects of the thermal paste).

(Note: LCD wipe and knife will be unusable after applying the thermal paste)

    3. (See Pic 2) These are your targets. The CPU, in the lower left, and the GPU, in the upper right. (See Pic 3) You'll have to remove the fan to get to the heatsinks. It's held down by 4 screws, they're highlighted on the pic.

    4. (See Pic 4) Unscrew the four screws highlighted on the picture to expose the CPU core.

    5. (See Pic 5) The CPU core is now exposed, and highlighted in the pic. See how much I used? That just stresses how LITTLE you need, especially considering I ended up wiping about half of that off anyway. Remember, all you are trying to do is cover the core with as little as possible.

    6. (See Pic 6) This is the CPU heatsink. We now have to remove the stock thermal paste. Like I said before, I used Arcticlean thermal paste remover, and then the surface purifier. I'm not sure what else you can use to remove it; again, read the instructions that came with your thermal paste.

    7. Repeat for the GPU core. The GPU core is about 4-5 times the size of the CPU core (bearing in mind mines the GT725 with the P8600), so you're going to need more thermal paste. I'm sorry I didn't get any pics of that, I forgot I had to keep taking pictures  . It's the same procedure though, you should be fine ;) . Besides, I can only attach 6 pictures at a time.

    8. You're finished. Just put the fan back in, then the back panel back on, and you can boot up straight away.

The best way to make maximum use of this is to boot up, get straight into a game, and when the GPU hits about 70 degrees, shut down, wait for it to cool down, then start up again, and keep repeating this process.

Don't be alarmed if youre temps are a little higher at first. Mine jumped up 6 degrees (idling temp), but gradually made their way back down, until now they're about 1 degree cooler, and this is nowhere near the 200 hours they say to allow for full effect.

Sorry this post is so long, but it's a detailed process. Hope everything went well :D

If this tutorial helped you, or if there's some way I can improve it, please let me know :)

"Catalyst 9.8 includes enhancements specific to Performance Platforms that improve system performance in CPU bound situations. In our tests at 1680x1050 resolutions and higher, ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 cards, and other 2x,3x,4x CrossFireX situations benefit considerably (up to ~50% in FarCry2) when used on a platform featuring AMD Dragon Technology. Titles such as Far Cry2, H.A.W.X., Battleforge, Stalker Clear Sky, Crysis, Company of Heroes, and World in Conflict show the largest gains".

can you confirmed all these or at least one ? :p

Well, I'm sitting outside on a 92F(33.33333333C) day, but in the garage ATM with my 725 running linux. It's a bit warmer in the garage, say 94F(34.4444444C) or so, almost no breeze. (Almost wishing that it was -10F again...)

    So today's temps:
    44C CPU
    54C system
    54.50C GPU (aticonfig --odgt, clocks 200 250)

Not bad considering that temps run higher under linux and batt runtime is considerably shorter compared to Vista + MSI's Turbo Battery mode, of course I'd not want to load the machine as I'd probably end up with a puddle of molten sand and plastic...

    Getting about 1h 40m - 50m battery runtime under linux v. something like 2h 30m (still) under Vista + Turbo Batt mode(catalyst 9.7). I haven't optimized the linux battery operation, so it's stock Ubuntu 9.04 x86-64 w/catalyst 9.7

    [EDIT]
Oh and since someone brought this up a LONG time ago, I've still never seen WiFi dropouts with the Intel 5100 card, and I've got about 5 WiFi APs that I can see ATM not including my own, which is a cheap D-Link DIR-615 model B.) I run in G mode since I have some legacy B devices, and cannot do b & n together.
    [/EDIT]

    [EDIT2]
So, it looks like updating the BIOS to 1.0U may be worth it to gain a little extra performance? Anyone notice any problems with it? (I'm still on the shipped 1.0R BIOS.)
    [/EDIT2]

    [EDIT3]
    @Lambofreak:
You still getting those display driver has stopped working error? I started getting them a few weeks ago but they only appear for me in 3 games:
    Drakensang: commonly
UFO: Aftershock: buggy as hell anyways and caused similar errors with nVidia cards
    Mount & Blade: rarely

Ran furmark, Oblivious, wannabe FO3, STALKER SoC, bunch of other games and never had the error and furmark gets the GPU quite hot usually settling around 86C and I've let it run for 20-30m. [EDIT4] also ran memtest+ v2.11 for several hours, no errors. Pimark for a while and no CPU errors.... [/EDIT4]

When I do get thos display driver has stopped working GPU temps are anywhere from 62 - 76C, so not all that warm, so I'm inclined to believe that it's a crappily coded engine or bad shaders or something that's causing the problem. (I also tried catalyst 9.7s using mobility modder and still get the error once in a while but ONLY in those 3 games... i.e. I've never seen it on the desktop in "2D" mode, in other 3D/2D apps, and some other games examples listed above..)
    [/EDIT3]

That's the reason you don't get the driver crashing issues . wether you use 9.4, 5 , 6 ,7 or 8 won't change anything if you use overdrive .. it's not about the driver .. higher clocks makes it crash . the safest is 535/890 ..

thats why msi doesnt release 9.8 and we have to mod to use them..i am pretty sure if we try to use stock msi drivers we can oc without problem.also its very disappointing spend 1400euros and can have the last stock drivers. desktop are far better i think.

Just updated to 9.8. I'm hoping this will solve my COD WAW freeze up issue. Has anyone installed Prototype yet? It's like GTA meets Wolverine. Tons of graphic challenges that does not lock me up at all like COD. I'm really thinking it must just be that game.
