I think it's going to come to me purchasing the MSi GT729 which is basically a GT725, so let me ask you folks (since there are more of you) how upgradable is it? I know the CPU, RAM, HDD are an ease to upgrade with almost any laptop, but how about the GPU? Now I was going to wait it out and buy the new ASUS Core i7's, but at the price MSi is selling I think I'd be more comfortable with my purchase specially since it'll be an international order (US to Canada). It's just too bad the MSi doesn't support dual HDD's, cause it would have made it much easier to choose.

Nearly impossible. It is a MXM socket, yes, but cooling, position of the GPU an memory.... You will be lucky if you find an other one matching.

    PSU is a thing, too.

    By the way Hi Catacylsm,

    nice to see you here.

Do you know what happened to gt725 forum? All I get is a confixx screen. Shouldn´t it be up again by End of August?

4AA will take up less video memory, so will allow the game to run faster. 8AA will look better, but in some games it does not noticeably improve on 4AA. However, for NFS Shift it would be best to stick it on 8AA, as it should be able to run it as the game isnt too demanding.

The more AA you use, the more video ram (vRAM) is used. As for changing to a 5870, i am not sure if it uses the same slot type as our 4850, and also you would probably have to make a custom heatsink to fit it in.

Yeah 5 series in our machine would be perfect, then i'll dump a qx in aswell and maybe custom mod some fans in off the USB internals.

Only problem i'd see is power requirements.

Providing the 5 series mobility chips use MXM3b like the current ones I think you guys have (you might need to check if thats the case or you're MXM2.1 though), then power use should be similar, as generally the top end cards are 50-75w TDP.

I really hope so alex, were MXM 3 with 2.1 compat, and im not too sure about tdp, i think the order for notebookcheck is innacurate, but the info provided is quite reliable.

AMD published a current consumtion of about 45-65 Watt for the HD 4850-4870. Still it is unclear if this value represents the chip alone or the whole mxm board including the memory (which would include about 5 Watt).

I just hope 5 series dont need too much juice, and that our cooling is sufficient.

Thats all nice folks and I really do not want to be the bad guy.

But where do you think you will get a Series 5 blank MXM module at a reasonable price?

    These modules are for manufacturers.

Do not get me wrong, but I tried upgradig a X1600 once in a laptop.

    Asus V1J

Scared the hell out of me finding a supplier that will be able to get me a card, besides you have NO gurrantee it will work correctly.

Especially in the UK! I don't think i've ever seen a blank Series 4 mxm module for a sale anywhere, and even if we do, it will probably be an imported one from china, selling on ebay with little or no warranty!

    Hello,

    Just a simple question.
Which Catalyst version do you think is the best? The MSI-version from their website or some ATI version (and which then)?

Thank you for your help and sorry for not read the 400+ pages for the info if you've discussed this topic sometime earlier.

Pfft how often do we see almost ANYTHING available/decently priced when it comes to stuff like this in the UK?
The UK market is horrendous for trying to buy something in the £1300-1700 laptop range.

@Ketyo, latest ATI versions. 9.8 Hotfix were really good drivers, as were 9.8, 9.9s were good but a bit buggy, so probably best to go 9.8/Hotfix until 9.10 are out (due out in a week or so)

Yeah, such a great machine to be fair, i really want MSI to look into some crossfire tech though, i would really dive for something like that (ATI CF + I7 on an x58 would be nice! and it'd be light...er haha)

Did you know there back up in pcworld under 7555GX? (The 6555/gt725 this is)

Well i will be getting a free toshiba laptop from my university.. just cos i live in a neighbouring area!! i know it won't be great but still.. its meant to be coming with windows 7.. and i have preordered windows 7 for my 725.. so it shall be a win7 fest.. if you will.

Also, have you guys seen the new GT640.. it has an i7 processor and a Nvidia GTS250. I just wish they would bring out a higher clocked mobile i7 processor to go between the new low clocked ones (1.6ghz with turbo up to 2.8ghz) and the higher clocked (2.66ghz +) desktop ones which some lucky people have in their laptops!

Impressive if you are CPU crunching. A GDDR3 GTS 250 is a downgrade from our 4850. We will get better frame rates on our GT725's. Honestly, the GT627's will probably get better frame rates if indeed the 640/740 have GDDR3.

Yeh, altho i think the gts250 is better than the 9800, which the 627 has in atm. Also, I think the i7 turbo is really handy, as it can shut down 2 cores and then power up the working cores to 2.8ghz, so it gives the ability to run programs well regardless of the optimization (at least I think it works like that - correct me if i'm wrong)

It is not. The 250m is greatly limited by its 128bit memory. It "might" be better then the 9800m gs with gddr5, but with gddr3, which is confirmed, it's going to blow.

Yeah I guess this makes sense since they run pretty cool, this makes better scalability for apps and software that don't support as many cores.

Good idea. Your right about the video graphics and Ram though. Mind you if future games dev is becoming less GPU dependant, this may not be such a bad thing, not for this setup but for future hardware.

I think a new display pannel (im having really unballanced lighting right now :(

A mini PCI Solid state drive just for windows :)

A new harddrive 7200 RPM HDD preferably 500GB with prehaps a 1TB Esata extention.

    A Zalman NC2000
    ICD7 Thermal Compound

    QX9300 Uhrah + OC to 3ghz+

Wall mounted 42" 1080p tv along with my current 22" monitor.

Then 5870 if it comes out for our machines "please oh please"

If not, wait for alienware to release an m17x upgrade with i7 and the dual 4870s and im all set :D but to be fair, i plan on having my machine a LOOONG time.

Yeah I'd heard, I dont work there anymore though so no more insider information like I used to have a year or two ago on what was appearing, nor the 10% discount (better than nothing), that said Im paid considerably more so it still works out haha. If I'd seen the Advent 6555 on your pricing, non-.97 priced (clearance) I would have jumped on it.

You think thats the best notebook cooler for gt725?
I'm looking for a cooler myself and I was thinking about zalman but I'm worried it's not gonna be deep enough(the vents on zalman)-and the airflow wont blow directly into the laptops vents (especially CPU),
    but maybe I'm wrong...
did You seen any tests of nc2000 on 725/6555 ?
