I want to buy a GT780DXR Barebone customized notebook. I live in italy, and I have a few questions:
1. what are the total shipping / handling / ... / fees? how much do I have to pay next to the price shown on the config page?
2. does it have warranty stickers? can I open the bottom to see the ram / hdd/ cpu / gpu?
3. what does "1 Year Parts/Free Domestic Ground Shipping/Lifetime Toll-Free Technical Support" mean?
If for example i receive the notebook and the keyboard lights do not work, i have to pay 100 euros to send it to you to solve this and 100 to receive it back?
If the answer to the question above is yes, is there a way for you to check the notebook before sending it to me so i can avoid this kind of risk? For example, to check that the hdd are seen by the bios, that there are no dead pixels and that the keyboard lights + hardware buttons function well?
I'm aware that what I need is kind of a stretch)
Thanks!

is it safe to just remove the battery when i'm using it for hours?

Hello,
I have GT780DX, it shipped without Windows 7, can somebody provide me OEM info for this model because I recently bought Windows 7 HP and want to complete this information. Please send screen (right click My computer and properties). Of course I don`t need serial number or something like that, I need full name: Manufacturer, Model, etc. OEM logo is also very important for me. Logo You can find by running regedit:
Browse to this Registry path
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\OEMInformation
(If you can’t find the OEMInformation key, right-click the CurrentVersion key, select New followed by Key option and name the new Key as OEMInformation)
While at the OEMInformation key, right-click on the right-pane, select New followed by String Value to create these Registries as “String Value” type:
Logo – the full path of OEMLogo.bmp, i.e. C:\windows\system32\OEMLogo.bmp
Manufacturer
Model
I want also to say Thank You everybody for many important tips in this thread. It helped me a lot.
If somebody need some info about my GT780DX-608XPL (MSI selling this model in Poland) - i5-2430M, GTX 570M, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD WD Scorpio Black, 180W PSU, DVD-RW. -
I've a question about overclocking and skyrim for anyone who can give a little bit of insight for me.
I've been benchmarking my graphics card, the 570m, today and yesterday but today after running furmark for a good while with no problems or artifacts at 720/1800, I turned on skyrim with the overclock set at 700/1800. I got pink dots all over the screen at about 2 minutes in, but they went away when I paused the game. I alt+tabbed out of the game, reverted the overclock to 680/1750 and suddenly they were gone.
Now I'm a tad confused as I ran Dirt 3 also under 700/1800 and there were no problems, and furmark had no problems with 720/1800 (granted, the temps were quite high at 84c) so my question is basically has anyone else had random artifacts popping up while having the GPU overclocked on skyrim?
Also, what is the highest setting that this graphics card has been overclocked to and survived? I'm not looking to attempt it myself, I'm just curious!
Thanks in advance guys! -
hey guys...was just starting to play SC2 and the game froze then a pop up saying 'my page pool memory is low' showed....
i went to find out where to adjust the PPM and got here Image - TinyPic - Free Image Hosting, Photo Sharing & Video Hosting
but im not sure how to set the settings without blowing up my computer
when i go in to change the settings it has 'auto manage paging file sizes' checked
My C: drive has 'system manage size' checked
D: has 'no paging file' checked
so im assuming that all i have to do is adjust my C: to a custom intial/maximum size, correct?
if that is correct, what is the best to set it to? i have 16gb of ram i that helps -

#1 OEM bios type activation done at the factory by Microsoft partners on many hard drives at a time with an OEM key and certificate.
#2 System Builders, this is by the key that's under the battery in MSI GT780 models
#3 Using the key supplied in a boxed retail verion
The difference between 2 and 3 is that with #2 all support is from the system builder and #3 the support is from Microsoft. With a boxed retail version you get 1 free support call.
Ok,back to #1.To get the MSI logos and startup screens and bios activate Windows 7 the notebook must have a 2.1 bios(Vista notebooks had 2.0).All models from Microsoft partners that normally ship with Windows 7 preinstalled like the GT780 models have a 2.1 bios.
Now you need to find on the Internet the MSI $OEM$ folder that goes inside the Sources folder of the Windows 7 installation disk to get the MSI screens, themes and logos.
The MSI $OEM$ folder contains:
Bios activation key
Bios activation certificate
MSI oobe(screens,themes,logos) -
I've been testing more thoroughly and it seems as soon as I set my memory clock at 1762 or higher, green artifacts ahoy. It's odd as I don't get any in furmark or 3dmark 11...
But I can up the core clock to 735+ and the shader to 1470, the laptop has no problems with that!
I googled a bit and the core/shader clocks are generally more important than the memory clock for FPS. Am I correct in this assumption guys?
I'm going to check if it's just my steam games this is happening with or all of them, I'll come back with my findings.
BTW, I'm also getting the same frame rates in Skyrim, thoroughly delighted with its performance on this laptop
I should hopefully be getting MW3 in the post in the next few days ( I know, I know, it should be BF3 but I'm a sucker for the multiplayer havoc of the COD series) so as soon as I get that I'll see what the frame rates are and test a bit more with afterburner.

That's really impressive. Ken, Will you be up to upload the msi gtx580m vbios by any chance ? :{

It`s clean version of Windows 7, it doesn`t have any any manufacturer logos, oem info like your recovery dvd, which came with MSI laptops when You buy computer with preinstalled Windows HP or maybe there is no recovery DVD and only recovery patrition - I don`t know.
So I don`t need any serial, certificate, I only wanted to add MSI logo, oem info like computer name, manufacturer (the same You have from factory), maybe MSI wallpapers, etc. You can easly send me this without breaking any license. All that things You have on hard disk with preinstaled operating system. -
Did somebody try to install Windows XP 32-bit on GT780DX?
On laptopvideo2go they have driver + modyfied inf for 570m, look here:
v290.36 Windows XP 32bit | NVIDIA Desktop - LaptopVideo2Go Forums
It seems that almost the rest of the drivers should work, but for sure not Intel Wirelless-N 130 (Intel doesn`t support this hardware in XP - info from Intel.com) and Bison Cam -also no XP driver here.
I checked and we have for XP these drivers:
1) Chipset Driver
Rapid Storage
Intel Management
2)LAN
3)Audio
4)Card Reader
5)USB 3.0
I know that Nvidia will no create drivers for GTX 560M, 570M, 580M for Windows XP, I`ve read this somewhere.
Sometimes OEMs like DELL or Asus are writing those not official drivers. -
I just purchased one of the MSI 780DXR notebooks in large part due to the discussions in this forum. After reading the 500 plus pages of info on the machine, there is very little for me to ask, but I just wanted to tell everyone thanks for the informative posts to help me come to a happy computer purchase without any buyers remorse.

Many of us, including myself, opted to do clean WIN 7 installs, as opposed to keeping the factory OS load..... later simply activating the OS with the MSI supplied Windows OEM activation Key located beneath the battery. Of those I know have done this, I know of no one who is concerned with the data you seek...... and I think you will find it insignificant or of little value. Maybe it would be helpful to better explain how adding this data to a fresh OS install would be beneficial. I certainly would like to know.
My wife's GT780DX still has the factory install, but I remain curious to your request and look forward to your reply. Educate me.......

I wanted only create DVD with Windows 7 and slipstream drivers and those oem info (without certificate which I don`t need). So in future it will be very helpful in case of reinstall or hard drive failure. In this integration process I want to learn some basics about creating this DVD using RT Se7en Lite utility. I want also to have a system like from factory and because I bought my GT-780DX-608XPL without operating system and want to complete that OEM info. I know it`s not important from technical aspect. Here you can see configurations of gt780dx in some shop in my country: http://www.x-kom.pl/szukaj/gt780dx You can see that some of the don`t have operating system preinstalled. Only something like free DOS on hard drive is coming from factory. Of course completely useless DOS. I think it`s only to turn on the system and check that it`s working
.
Please note that I`m still learning English, I was only three months in USA -sorry for using only simple words, because of this my question was unclear and I should tell you about this laptops without operating system in Poland, for some of you this can be strange that MSI is selling laptops without OS. From what I know this is normal in Europe maybe to cut a price of hardware.
Stay tuned because I have many tips about that laptop. Of course I will write big topic about this, I need only to transale everything, now my text is in PolishI not only want to use your tips and will also give something from me, this forum is very helpfull for everybody
.
Some example tips about gt780dx:
-nvidia 285.62 drivers (gtx 570m) - sometimes when you are working in Firefox you can experience random errors with GPU driver (driver STOP responding but... -message), it hapens only ocassionally but its connected with new version of Firefox. We need to wait for new driver to fix this. Now I have fresh install the same drivers and only Internet Explorer and no errors like that.
-everbody knows that touchpad is not the best side od gt780 - scrolling pages by clicking. The fix is to use touchpad driver which came on dvd (driver and utility). Strange that MSI don`t have this driver on gt780dx support page. I see it only on MSI support forum. After installation you can find an option to turn clicking scrolling to sliding scrolling in touchpad utility/config.
-some people are asking me how to use how record movies using laptop camera in Windows 7. The same situation here -MSI put camera utility on support DVD but not on support page.
-when installing Bluetooth driver (Intel hybrid Wireless-n 130 + Bluetooth device in some configuration) you need first turn on Bluetooth button, when it`s off installer setup will give you an error.
-to open dvd drive during boot (MSI logo) I need to enter BIOS. So during bootup button is not working but in BIOS setup working ok. Strage because for example in DOS mode (e.g. diagnostic DOS utility) this button is working fine) and there are of course no drivers loaded for Touchpanel when in DOS mode.
-battery life for Intel I5 which is lower TDP than I7 is much better. I can using Internet (reading pages, not CPU intensive) up to 4 hours !!! I7 is up to 3h only from what I know.
-VERY IMPORTANT for gt780dx users - I`ve chacked this laptop DPC latency and good news are that this laptop don`t have that very common problem with DPC. Many users of Alienware, Dell laptops cannot solve problem with DPC, manufacturers are writing new new Bioses but problem still exists on that machines. For You who want to check DPC latency - download DPC Latency Checker utility. About DPC latency problem search google - DPC latency or DPC spikes.
-some of you who have gt780dx gtx 560m version might be interested that GPU driver 290.53 BETA should work with 560m on xp. In nvak.inf file there is a line: DEV_1251&SUBSYS_84BA1043 "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M"
It`s no modded driver and no modded inf from laptopvideo2go. Look here, it`s from nvidia.com: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-290.53-beta-driver.html I know that is driver for desktop GPUs (release notes also nothing about mobile models) but download and check that inf file, it has correct information for mobile GTX 570. Nvidia stated that they will no support high end 500m series in XP??? Maybe they will.
Can somebody check this on gtx 560m with xp 32-bit?
I have also few questions easy to check for everybody.
1) Do you also have many WMI errors in Windows 7 64-bit in Event Manager? What kind of errors you have listed on your systems?
2) In my system on "gaming" power plan after reboot brithness of LCD always return to 100% -for me this is very anoying, the same in your machines?
3) Will be continued...I`m going to sleep.

Let us know how you like it. Like you, I purchased MSI GT780DX based on reading LOTS of comments in this forum and the fact that I current own a MSI GT735 that has been trouble free. It just can't keep up with me these days, lol. Plus, I'm an electronics buff, so trend to upgrade some things for better every 2-3 years. Won't have my 780 for another 7-10 days. Hello Everyone,
I just received a GT780R and would like to ask you if there is a way to underclock the CPU for office use.
The fan is running most of the time, not too strongly but distinctly, and I am looking for a solution to lower the fan in office mode.
I think the GPU speed is managed by the nvidia driver (optimus) but it seems to me that the speed of the i7 is not managed dynamically.
Do you know of a soft to underclock the CPU ? I could just switch it to full speed when I do heavy work.
Do you think there is or will be a way to change the fan temperature triggers and/or voltage and fan speed ?
Thank you so much for your attention and sharing of your experience, -

Then why is my machine producing heat that requires fan when I do nothing on the machine ?

My GT780DX also was without an operating system.
I own 10 keys to all versions of Window from being a Technet subscriber.
The files that you want are in the $OEM$ folder that's part of the Windows 7 installation done at the MSI factory.
You need to get that folder and add it to the Sources folder of a Windows 7 installation disk.
If you don't know how to make a Windows 7 USB installation disk, ask or search for it in this thread.I posted detailed instructions for clean installing Windows 7 on a GT780 series both for RAID0 and for AHCI.
You get the MSI themes, logos and installed during the Windows 7 setup installation.
Google ,7 Oem Sources Folder Project, done by members of mydigitallife forums.
EDIT:Look in boot drive for directory Windows>System32>oobe>info
The info folder is 4.28 mb.I can email it to you or the whole $OEM$ folder if you want to try and replace your info folder with the one I have with the logos or add the $OEM$ folder to an installation disk.
On my GT780DX this is where I see the backgroundDefault.jpg and several MSI logos installed. -
I'm curious as to whther the new GT783 will have throttling issue of GTX 580M similar to that of Alienware M17x, M18x. If someone is generous enough to disassemble the machine (for a repaste maybe?) and take some photo of the heatsink, that would be great.
Also Ken can you try make a video play throughh BF3 and Crysis 2 on this? And with overclock too if thats not too much to ask -
Oh man, just ordered the MSi gt780dxr... and I hope it will be worth it, haha.
The ASUS g74sx was at 1660 USD (I was trying to decide g74sx vs gt780dxr), while the MSi was at 2160 USD. That's a $500 difference, but for this I got 500gb more hdd space, 570m 1.5gb vs 560m 3.0gb, a matte screen vs a glossy one, and a blu-ray reader.
Worth it?
Specs:
- Intel Core i7-2670QM 2.2 GHz
- 8gb RAM 1333 MHz
- 1.5 tb 7200 rpm HDD (2x750)
- Nvidia GTX 570M 1.5 gb
- 17,3" full HD matte screen
- 3 USB 2.0, 2 USB 3.0
- Blu ray-reader (and dvd dual-layer writer)
- Backpack, mouse + Dirt 3
Price: $2166
Keep in mind that Norway is a very pricey country (medium Big Mac menu = $16), and importing a comp costing 1700$ (with almost the same specs maybe more ram (what I saw at gentech) would cost me approx 1700 + 100 in shipping + (25% of 1700+100 (taxes)) = $2250. (And worst of all, I couldn't buy it with a credit card outside of Norway (gentechpc </3)which I HAD to)
Will I be satisfied with this buy, and still be relevant in about 2-3 years?
(My current laptop I've owned for 2.5 years: Acer Aspire 6920: Intel Core 2 Duo T8100, 4gb DDR2 SDRAM, 250 gb hdd 5400 rpm, 16" 1366 x 768 ( WXGA ) glossy, NVIDIA GeForce 9500M GS 512 MB GDDR2, which I haven't felt has been relevant for at least the last year and a half) -
what is the probability of a barebone gt780dxr to have problems with the hinges? i currently own a gx620 and the hinges broke the plastic
and i start reading everywhere about people that have this problem. so, is this a potential problem for a barebone unit?

Do you have an Intel ES CPU in your system.
"Engineers Arrested For Selling Intel Samples On Ebay"
Four Taiwanese engineers working for various Intel OEMs were arrested this week by China's Criminal Investigation Bureau for selling so-called "Engineering Samples" (ES) chips on Ebay and pocketing the proceeds. The police recovered 178 CPUs with an estimated worth of $82,590; the group has admitted to selling over 500 chips since 2009.
Intel historically takes an extremely dim view of people selling these parts

My new GT780R crashed in windows (freezed). Then windows does not start and restore will not load. It is staying forever at the green bar "Microsoft Corporation".
Startup repair does the exact same thing, freezing at the same place.
I replaced one of the HD for a SSD M4 and reinstalled on the m4 with the restore discs. The system was stable for several hours before that happened.
For information all the programs of ultimate boot cd function properly but I don't have much experience and don't know what to look.
What would you do ?
Thank you -
What kind of restore disc you have? Manufacturer or you create it yourself and burned DVD?
Did you add RAM? -
Thank you so much lukewola,
I didn't touch at the ram. I removed the HDD that is a bit lower, next to the battery and put the M4.
Before this I created the restore discs myself from the normal configuration RAID 0 of 2x500Go
The restore disc should be good because I installed the restore from them on the SSD properly, I changed the HDD config from RAID to AHCI, I formatted, I switched the disk, I launched the restore and everything was running fine until the crash.
I might mention that I had been looking at ways to control the fan, underclock GPU or CPU, but I just checked AfterBurner and DualCore. I touched a little bit at the frequency of GPU but I had no access to the voltage and lost hope to affect the fan triggers. I didn't push anything in any way, I was just doing basic windows config.
I tried memtest but stopped at 50% without error, I will run it to the end and if there is no error, I will replace the original drive and try with both HD in AHCI mode.
I have quite little experience in DOS mode, what is wd drive ?
I indeed strongly suspect a M4 SSD crash...
Thank you again
UPDATE : when removing the SSD, the computer loads properly the restore program.
=> SSD issue
I connected the SSD to my tower, it is recognized and I can use it like any drive, so it looks like the problem is only for booting. Maybe some issue with AHCI.
If anyone has put a M4 in the GT780, I would love to know their bios config. Do we have to remove the second HD during the restore ? Do you do a fresh windows install and then add the drivers or do you use the restore on the original config ?
Thank you -
I'm very much enjoying it. Got it two days ago, and it was a considerable upgrade from my last Gateway FX. I don't ubertweak all of the settings like most here, mostly because I don't know much about doing all of that. Out of the box with the preinstalled software, I have had no problems at all with my games I like to play, and can run them on high settings, versus where I was running on low before. The screen seems bigger than I had thought it would be for some reason. My old 17.3 just didnt look this big. Not sure if its the widescreen format or not, but I like. Im having lots of "Oh neat, what's this button do moments!" But I'm kind of a sucker for useless shiny things on a keyboard.
All in all, I cannot complain. I just got the 406 model. The only thing I think I want to do is get an ssd for it, but not so sure I will do that as, I wouldn't really know what I was doing to install it, or what it will really do for me. But everyone else wants one or has one, and I feel like Im missing something. -

set a plan (or modify your current one)
click at change advanced power settings, you'll see "processor power management" in the list! click on it and set the maximum processor state to 5% on battery! click OK!
now whenever you're on battery the CPU will constantly work at 800mhz, even when playing games you'll still get over 150 minutes of gameplay 3D or 2D! -
so...flashing is not an option?
and .... I don't trust ebay for some reason! they're mostly the dell one! -
what do you mean by flashing? flash the 580M bios into 570M???
