no I mean from dell or clevo bios to MSI's ( or dell to clevo if clevo bios compatible)
===========
I heard that GT783R uses different heatsink! please someone confim this![]()

-
for the dell card bar-code havent tried and no one put in a clevo card yet.
A reseller said that the heatsink is different but i doubt it since the 570M card layout is 580M minus 2 VRAM chips. If only someone with the laptop on hand are willing enough to take out the card -

Certainly you can flash the VBIOS..... create your own if you dare.....
Svet's VBIOS Tool
Svet is adding support for the GTX-580M as we speak, and a new version will be released shortly.

Guys,
I will keep you posted, my Dell 580M and heatsink are on their way;
If there is thermal throttle due to Dell vbios, will flash with Clevo and/or Msi's ! -
rep'd
keep us posted, also how much did you spend if thats not too personal?
-
yes I'm almost certain that my current 570M heatsink will fit too, they're both the same ship with different vrams! but my question was like they added 1 more heat pipe or something?

Heatsink may be an issue. If not, when you get the card, could you post the VBIOS for comparison? This would be helpful to myself and many others. The MSI cards come strait from Nvidia, so it's Nvidia's VBIOS (which we have)..... not sure about cards coming from Dell/Sager. Also, could please post screenshots of GPU-Z?
Thanks in advance!

I will do everything I can to let you know all the details.
The Dell 580M should be here by Tuesday but the heatsink not before Wed. I will do some mod on my laptop: I bought some Aluminium Ram Heatsinks and planned to do some holes on the back cover to dissipate more heat, especially the fan and the ram HS.
Apparently, according to DGDXGDG, flashing the vbios shouldnt be a problem at all at least with Clevo vbios as he's done that the other way round.
But Saltius just replied me that the msi vbios is a bit different:
P1=485m clocks = 575/linked/1500 and P0=stock 580M and I need the P1 button to enable turbo boost and P0. On my barebone, there's no turbo button so don't know really how works the GT683/780:
Is it o/c to P0 automatically when sensing a 3d load (like my MS16F2) ?
However, DGDXGDG told me that apparently the MOBO in the GT685/783 have changed compared to GT683/780 to allow the gtx580M to run well and not causing some brutal shutdown under 3d heavy loads (even with the right power supply)...so wait&see
I already have the 0.92v msi vbios modded by Saltius, very kindly so will keep you posted.
Here is the whole plan :
1) installing Dell580M and heatsink correctly (shouldnt be too difficult as heatsink are the same)
2) modding the cooling and ventilation
3) 1st boot, run a 3dmark vantage to see if there's throttling with the standard Dell vbios. I expect to see some.
4) Flash with the Dell vbios modded by Saltius (P0=P1) and which apparently would "remove" thermal throttling.
5) Re-run 3dmarkvantage and if it is not solved, flash with Clevo vbios as if you chec the bios version in GPU-Z, they are exactly the same.
6) Retry.
7) Worst case scenario, this is something I dont want to happen, is flashing my Dell 580M to MSI vbios. As explained above, the vbios look different. I am now asking Saltius to see if there are major differences between those vbios so that I can flash safely.
Hopefully it will work, otherwise I will have to go back to my alternative solution with the 6990M and 5870M HS, which is also powerful.
Stay tuned
edit: in the meantime, I have just updated the vbios to the 3.05 fully unlocked by Xonar ! So will try to get some small o/c through the BLCK if I can get some cheap XMP memory. -
i'd say only make holes if required, test the card thoroughly first. Think of it as last resort.
And personally I think the difference will be in the new mainboard BIOS as there is hardly anything they can change inside the machine to make it accomodate GTX 580M better. -
Apparently there are differences which need soldering/desoldering
-

I am sure this info will be forthcoming from one of our forum friendly resellers.
-
i have seen the 580M cards from both Dell and Clevo and they are the same so I couldnt think why would nvidia provide a different card layout. My understanding is that they provide the chipset and MSI will do the soldering, board, etc...It can't be different unless MSI forgoes the design of GT683/GT780 entirely.
The heatsink could be different similar to the Alienware revision in that they just add more copper on top so it could dispatch more heat. -

Wonder If I can upgrade from a 560M to a 580M

question: for gaming, 2670qm + 580m or 2760qm + 570m?

2670qm + 580m

GTX580M and GTX570M heatsink comparison, they looks identical except the 570M 1.5GB is missing one piece of thermal pad:

Awesome! I will rep you as soon as i am able again Ken
But what is that thing between the 2 lower screws? Look like a lump or something.
Can you give us the shot of the card itself too? -
Really awesome ! What is the big hole near the die ? Is it to evacuate the heat from the chip ?

What is this thermal paste? And will my gt780dxr be very bad without it?

Also, I see there are a lot of weird names for things here that I am totally unaware of what are. I ordered an MSi gt780dxr, and now I'm wondering if I need to install a whole lotta new things, like bios, and overclock and blabla. I don't really feel the need to, as it will be a great improvement over my current laptop. Should I? Is there maybe a rundown on "what a noob should do to their MSi laptop to get most out of it (while not killing himself or the laptop)"? -

Thermal paste goes between your CPU and its heatsink and your GPU and its heatsink to help pull the heat away and conducted down the heat pipes to your exhaust fan. It will be used when building your laptop. It is not an added component.
IC Diamond is the best thermal compound on the market, and is better than the factory goop they put on, so it is offered as an upgrade by most of us Build to Order laptop dealers.
Sadly for you apparently, I don't think any of us will accept credit card payment for international orders. Bank Wire Transfer (T.T.) or Western Union Money Transfer are usually the only acceptable forms of payment, but then when you pay that way you also earn a 3% cash discount. -

Great job striker, will rep you as soon as i am able again
Maybe you could add a FAQ for some questions like why does gaming performance decrease while running on battery, which is asked a lot. -
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Yeah, I get a chuckle everytime that particular subject comes up. I mean, this notebook is about as good as it gets presently, to having a true portable D.T.R. Considering all system power requirements, a 75 to 100w GPU, and a 180w PA requirement, it amazes me that folks expect to BF3 (or the like) off the wire. Actually this notebook does pretty darn good not gaming, and getting around 2.5 hours unplugged. I mean like, 'DUH'....... when seriously gaming, JUST PLUG THE DANG THING IN for goodness sakes! It's like folks really believe MSI has installed a mini reactor, or something.

Hey guys! Do you know if we can upgrade our GPU from the GTX560M (in the GT780R) to a GTX570 or GTX580?
Regards. -
Yes provided you can find one
-
@Kilador,
You need the 570M/580M heatsink for that upgrade, the 560m's has a different layout. -
WhatsThePoint Notebook Virtuoso
The problem I found with the stock MX-2 thermal compound was in the factory application and not in the ability to transfer the heat. There was just too much TC on the CPU and GPU.
While the IC Diamond TC may be good there's no proof it's the best.
IMO proper application after complete removal of the old TC is key to good heat transfer no matter which quality TC you use.
The room temperature dictates what the operating temperature will be.
What I'm using is in my signature.

Im new to this forum, but i have been reading lots of pages for a couple of days now since i plan on buying a gt780dx. Almost everything i have read from this laptop has been good and im really excited to know that cause i plan on keeping this laptop a long time a upgrade when needed.
I am actually an arquitecture student and in need for a good pc to work on all the 3d modeling, cad, and Rendering programs such as, 3dmax, autocad, revit, sketchup, maya, kerkythea, twilight render, etc. since i want this pc for long term use i want to have top of the line hardware or what my budget allows(1700 usd) how will the gt780dx 406us perform? or should i back off on buying a pc right now and wait for the new generation of kepler nvidia cards go out? will the price go too high? sorry for all the questions but i really need to be sure of what im doing.
Thanks! sorry for my english, it is not my first language! lol -
Very unhappy with my 3 week old gt780dxr. It really is not a laptop that will last. Besides the crappy noisy fan the major problem is the power kicks out with a top to where the AC adapter connects to the laptop. I use the laptop on my chest with no battary to keep it light. The power cord in the back is in a bad spot. I looked inside the laptop and the AC plug is soldered on the motherboard. What a big cheap mistake. I will give the laptop to a family member and MSI lost a future customer. My Asus G73jw does not have the performance but is a machine that will at least last and was designed a whole lot smarter.
-
-
-
Why do they call them laptops? Not the point all my laptops worked fine with the exception of the MSI. Its poorly designed and the power connection can be easily broken internal unlike better brands.
-
and no, Asus design is not smarter! we wouldn't see their GPU soldered into the motherboard if they were!

Jaycalgary, what part of its specs did you not know before buying? Its weight and dimensions are published all over the place. This is a gaming desktop replacement machine - it is not supposed, and not reasonably expected, to be lightweight.
There are things that I don't like about this laptop, but weight is not one of them - I knew that it's a brick when placing the order. -
Hi guys.. more problems with my gt780r im afraid
Last nigth I watched a Movie with my gf, in the end of the movie the battery was empty and we started watching tv instead. The morning after aka today the computer wouldnt boot properly.
BOOTMGR is missing press ctrl alt del to reboot.
When I did that the computer restarts and the MSI logo shows. But the usual options like del for setup f3 for recover etc is gone.
The computer doesnt find BootMGR and it all starts over again.
I have tried the EC reset(?) not working. Change places of my hdd and ssd but same problem... I wanted to try to insert my win 7 dvd but the dvd touch button wont work.. I tried open it with a needle in the little hole on the dvdslide but couldnt get it to open.
Any help? -
Have you checked the boot order in the bios ? Make sure your SSD comes first.
-
Learn how to read! Where did I complain about weight? It is lighter and a better size than my Asus. I am complaing about poor build quality.
-
if you're not happy with MSI's, you should try alienware and sager or any clevo based lap! nope, asus is not a better option! unless you want to limit yourself with the GTX560M! -
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
I took the time to review your previous forum post history, and I also suspect you are really experiencing 'buyer's remorse'. Rather than trying-out such complaints here, why not try these out where you purchased your notebook..... your local Calgary Canada vendor, Memory Express.
(would love to be a fly on the wall for that)
It's really very simple..... you are unhappy with the notebook, so get a refund. Then you can move on to the next notebook you would like to try. Bantering back & forth here will do you no good, and will not resolve your issues. Seek out and find your 'perfect' notebook, and we can ALL be happy here.
Good Luck!
