Yes, the only difference between the matte display and glossy display is the type of film that is applied to the outer layer.

I was just messing around with Nvidia system tools and Nvidia Inspector and noticed something. My 570m's stock clocks were at 575/1500/1150. Is this right? I noticed that some reported their memory clocks sitting at 950.
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
575/1500/1150 are the stock clocks for the 570M.

He has listed them as CORE/MEM/SHADER

They don't, thats what im saying, maybe you are confusing DDR clocks with real clocks?

Anyone else have a flaky space bar? Like no response when pressing the bottom edge and specifically the bottom right or lower left corners.
-
-
WhatsThePoint Notebook Virtuoso
Bottom corners only if lightly pressed. When fully pressed down there's no problem.
Why hit the spacebar lightly in the lower corners unless you're looking for problems to post about.
Speedsters and Touch Typists will have some key pressing problems on most gaming notebooks.
I have missed keystokes only when I hit the keys too lightly.
All of my typing problems on the GT780DX are pilot error. My brain is sometimes a letter or two ahead of my fingers.Probably old age setting in.
If I'm also chewing gum at the same time it will double my typos. -
Just wanted to thank everyone that helped and offered advice. I decided to go ahead and buy the 406 with a few upgrades and am excited to receive it! If something inside it explodes I know where to go for advice gluing it back together

I'm hearing "flickering" if that's the right word, from the speakers of the laptop during random occassions when sound actually comes out of the speakers.
The keyboard is still typing random digits or characters when I'm not doing it. For an example, I write 1 1 1 1 1 1 and it brings along a P.
My local store where I bought the MSI GT780DX brought it in for repair and couldn't find any fault with it.....1 hour after I received it back from the repair, the keyboard acted the same.
Also I have no idea how I deactivate the laptop's microphone and insert my own microphone. When I insert my mic in the pink , it adds it up as a 5.1 speaker :S
And another one, I didn't even receive my Dirt 3 game that was promised in the advertisement + box.
Should I go back to my local shop and get my money back? :S -
I contacted MSI about this and they said it wasn't normal and have offered to replace the keyboard. -
First I wanted to thank all of the various forum members for the information they provided in this thread. When I begin shopping for a new laptop I always come here and read all of the posts first.... which I recommend everyone do. It may take a few hours to read 500+ pages but you will be better informed in your decision. I have now received my new GT780DXR-447 and love it. The first one I got had a stuck pixel which would not free up no matter what method I used. The replacement has run flawless and is cooler than expected. I have BF3 running on it with no framerate issues (set on high). The audio is awesome.. the keyboard works great.. matte screen is nice and the cooling is impressive. Never above 74c in furmark (standard clocks). The only complaint i have is the "S" bar but I can learn to live with it.

About the overclocking for GPU
Can you overclock to the maximum like 750 MHz or lower a bit ? -
Not without vbios flash to overvoltage, couldn't run mine @700mhz without few artifacts using stock vbios

May i have a stupid question if you will....It seems the TDE function is gone. I dont have it anymore and i searched whole computer, nothing..
-----EDIT-----
Fixed, EU is down for me but after one minute US finally responded ^^ -
Hi everyone,
I recently purchased a GT780 and i wanted to install my own Windows 7 professional edition but i was able to do it by only removing the raid 0 function.
I was wondering if there was a way to install Windows 7 and keep the raid 0 working properly. I had an error during the installation telling me that Windows can't be installed on this type of hardware.
I don't really want to use the backup DvDs to do so.
I tried to find an answer on the first post of this thread but i didn't find anything.
Thank for the help. -

Did you break the original raid0 array?
Did you try doing a Microsoft anytime upgrade and using your Professional key when asked for it?
If you are starting from scratch see my posts in this forum that might help.

msi preinstalled with the home edition of Win 7 and i was wondering to upgrade to professional .
Will all my data be gone or stay where they are ? I dont want a fresh install. -
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
1. How you are going to upgrade it.
2. Is your data on the same drive as your Windows 7?
If you upgrade using Windows 7 Anytime Upgrade it will not disturb your data regardless of where it is.
If your data is on a separate drive, then it will not disturb it regardless of which method you use to upgrade, but if you are going to use a Windows 7 disk to do your upgrade just be sure you select the correct drive to install it. If your drives are identical, then just to be safe, take the data drive out of your laptop before you upgrade Windows 7. -
-
it sounds like either you have a corrupted windows or your mobo might be going bad.
let it overwrite everything and rebuild to factory specs.
Make sure you copy your documents and important files to external storage before b/c this procedure will remove everything from the hard disc, start from scratch.
Start with the recovery and if that doesn't fix it, i think you'll have to contact msi for an RMA.
Let us know how it works after that.
ps: for the Dirt 3 game, is it a Steam download? i didn't read the coupon but i saw it in my box too. -

Unfortunately the Dirt3 coupon expired on 12-31-11

msi is a cool company, maybe they'll give it anyway , he's the proud new owner a great machine and just wants to give it a good spin.

i just wanted to thank everyone here for helping with my noisy fan problem, thanks guys
on another note, i put in my Crucial M4 SSD this morning and wow this thing is fast.
the boot timer vbs script tells me i'm booting to desktop in 11 seconds. incredible. -
During that time I had the factory installed OEM Windows 7 on my 7200 rpm HDD that I received with my computer.
I then decided to install a Crucial m4 128gb SSD alongside with the clean Windows 7 copy I found and was guided here on the forums.
Still the same issue.
Two different HDDs/SSDs, two different copies of Windows 7.
Still same problem. -
i can understand you're frustration with the whole situation.
it sounds like a hardware problem. Did they offer an rma recently for these problems ?
Why not ask to have them check it over, write down everything that is wrong and put the note with the laptop when shipping. -
hi guys long time loiterer here. recently i viewed th gentechpc site and saw the barebone with 580 changeable graphics what are your thoughts on this guys better than the gt783 in terms of customizations?
-
WhatsThePoint Notebook Virtuoso
You can add a SATA III SSD of your choice later or from the dealer when ordering a GT783-658.It will still be cheaper than a stock GT783-625 at $2499 with the lack-luster stock SATA II Transcend SSD.
An MS-1761 barebones model with a GTX580M graphics card will start at around $1300 before adding an OS and upgrading the CPU,memory, hard drive, warranty etc
Any unit with a GTX580M is something to be desired especially for a gamer but it won't come cheaply.
To me the barebones are great if you actually buy them to customize yourself with your own OS and upgrade parts. -
I've never received a single BSOD with this computer even though I stated the above problems. My drivers crashing or the comp locking itself has never happened either.
Like I stated previously, I gave the computer to my local shop who gave it to a repair service which stated the laptop's health is 100% and fully functioning. They "troubleshooted" the entire computer and couldn't find anything.
One hour after I got my laptop back from the repair here in Sweden, the same keyboard issues were still present. Even though if I personally called the repair service and asked for a status on my laptop and that they said that nothing was wrong. I insisted that the laptop had an issue but they sent it back anyway.
MSI is atm on a break and I've sent em a message and awaiting them an answer. And what's an RMA? xd -
I'm getting the barebone version. -
Hello,
I break the original raid 0 in order to install Windows 7 the first time.
I tried the method explained on the second link of the forum but i'm not able to load the raid drivers.
I get an error : "To continue installation, use the Load Driver option to install 32-bit and signed 64-bit drivers. Installing an unsigned 64-bit device driver is not supported and might result in an unusable Windows installation".
I tried to deactivate the driver signature by pressing F8 at the beginning of the installation but i get the same error.
Any idea to fix this ?
Thank for the help !
EDIT: I fixed this issue by using the Windows 7 version linked in the first page of the thread. Thank for the help ! -
The chassis, you get a longer warranty with name brand, you get more LED lights on your laptop with name brand, you get a button that allows you to overclock with just one touch and you get to use MSI's overclocking software.
In the end, you may weigh these differences and decide that they are worth the added cost in your opinion. As you can see, they weren't worth it in my opinion. I will say, if you do get the Barebones, make sure you choose the Steelseries keyboard upgrade. It really looks nice on the all black chassis. -

Hey Guys, I just got my GT780DX-406US Tonight and Im really excited, I've already reformatted and installed windows on the SSD I bought.
However, Im confused... I remember reading a post about the "essential" MSI software that I will need to use the important features, however im having a hard time finding that post among the 584 pages of this thread. I dont mean to come off as ignorant but I was wondering if anyone knew those applications off the top of thier head?
THANKS!
Also, my upgrade 6x blu-ray read dvd multi isnt reading the MSI driver disk.. Any advice? -

Now I will address some of your concerns. I wouldn't want someone new coming in here and actually thinking everything you said is true.
1) Most people who purchase gaming notebooks use a real mouse.
2) I guess you never heard of adjusting your DPI in "Display Settings" or your browser of choice. By your theory, could you imagine how small things would look on a display capable of 2560x1600?
3) Maybe your right. I wouldn't know. I haven't needed tech support but if I ever do, I purchased my system through a trusted vendor who has top notch customer service.
4) Google "Equalizer".....and then find it! Or you could just change the crossover frequency in the provided THX software. I'm sure you don't know what a crossover is so I'll give you a hint. "Raise It"
5) You could just turn it off completely if it's that much of a problem. I wouldn't know since I've never used my laptop at such extreme angles.
6) I've seen brighter. (Nitpicking)
7)
8) You know how desktops require a larger power supply if you want to run a high end GPU/CPU, a couple hard drives and a lot of RAM? Yea, laptops/notebooks are not immune to this phenomenon. Want a smaller power supply? Go grab a laptop with a GT 555.
9) Some did and some didn't. The ones that didn't came with a rubber wedge which I use and it has no problem holding my SSD. If I thought it would cause a problem, I would call my vendor and request him to ship me a bracket. The rubber stop works fine.
10) Removing the sticker on the bottom will in no way void your warranty and nobody here has ever had their warranty voided for removing it. MSI is very good with warranty's and they will tell you that the only way your warranty will void is if you really go messing up. They gave me an example of someone trying to rip their heat sink out without removing the proper screws. If your that worried about it, you can remove the sticker carefully and put it back on. Or you can just buy a load of them off the internet.
11) Switch it up. Your right hand gets old after a while(Seriously though, it is smack dab in the middle of the keyboard. Your hands are already there. When I say it's in the middle of the keyboard, I am not including the number pad. This is usually the way touch pads are designed. Touch pad is always lined up in the center of the keyboard.)
12) If you don't like RAID O, there are plenty GT 780 models that don't come in RAID. Why did you buy one with it if you don't like the idea of RAID? (Hey, if your system came in RAID, why were your worrying about a extra HDD bracket? Your system should have already had two brackets for it's two HDD's.)
13) This I do agree with. There have been many reports of the Steelseries Keyboard not recognizing some keystrokes. Luckily my vendor (Ken from Gentech) went over my keyboard personally to make sure every key was working as it should.
14) NO YOU DON'T!! -

Oooooooo, I can see evidence we were visited by one of our wonderful NBR Mods...... gotta love them guys!
What happened..... what did I miss? Lemme guess, troll fodder, right?
-
He was complaint about
- power supply is too big and heavy when GTX570M required bigger power supply
- screen resolution is full HD and he is not happy about it because things are too small for his eyes.
- GT780 has a nice powerful subwoofer and he is not happy about it because it's too loud and he doesn't know how to turn it off
There are much more nice features he was complaining about but I don't remember, but thanks to jrwingate6 answered responded all of his complaints very professionally.
Thanks jrwingate6. -
Does anyone know if its safe/good to overclock the processor from its original state?
I'm playing Star Wars: The Old Republic and it seems that the processor is "bottlenecking" the entire GT780DX and since MMORPG are highly dependent on processors and the game is poorly optimized;
Is it safe to do it?
I got a cooling pad under my GT780DX on max and it keeps it cooled. I've no experience in overclocking (will probably give it to a friend who knows how to do it).
So have you overclocked ur i7 2670QM? -
I'm afraid you won't be able to overclock this processor.
-
GT780DX
PROS:
1) GTX570M graphics
2) 2670QM processor
3) Very attractive appearance
4) Still somewhat portable, even though it is 17"
5) At the correct angle (directly above), the keyboard looks nice when you use white.
6) Anti-glare screen is a dream.
CONS:
1) Do not buy for the touchpad!
It doesn't work half the time, jumps around everywhere, and you cannot scroll!
I would rather have the one-button piece of junk that at least scrolls normal, even if you are forced to use the two-finger scroll, and responds correctly.
Syntelic is the worst touchpad I have ever owned! Very sad to say for this quite expensive laptop!
MSI does not have the drivers on their site, they told me they removed the touchpad drivers because too many people called and complained. That means that you should fix it! not remove support altogether! Stupid Awful MSI. Note: The latest touchpad driver is Sentellic mtp_stl_9.0.4.8_w700.zip (it's Beta), and the previous is mtp_stl_8.8.3.0_al00.zip. There is also a patch to help fix the jumpy touchpad called 1761_new_Patch.reg (google these names to find them). However, even with the patch, it only fixes the jumpiness sometimes. The touchpad is still unusable. The native Windows drivers are indeed better but the touchpad is still unusable no matter what way you go, especially if you are doing any design work like photoshop.
2) Full-HD 1920x1080 is way too small for the 17" screen and the 1366x768 resolution is very blurry. DPI settings are not an amicable solution, and changing resolution via windows or the NVIDIA control panel all have the same result. Custom resolutions have same detrimental result.
3) "tech support" - they know nothing, not even their own website
4) No option whatsoever to turn off Bass. Equalizer app gives no option to turn off bass. Other THX software also does not give option to turn of bass.
5) Keyboard backlight only becomes a nuisance when viewed at an angle.
6) No option to turn off the bright power light. I fixed this though by cutting a piece of electrical tape to size and now it looks like a rubber button and n longer has this backlight problem. Looks better too imo.
7) ESATA port does not work. There are no drivers on the site. MSI technical support and also their advanced technical support both were unable to help.
8) Gigantic power adapter. They could at least have included a travel charger like ASUS does.
9) Does not come with a HDD caddy for the second hard drive. You have to buuy it from them. It is $5 plus shipping an handling, but you also have to wait to receive it. This is more an issue of principle, since I am sure anyone who can afford a $2,000 laptop can afford an extra $10. However, for that price it should be included already!
10) Sticker on the bottom says "Void If Tampered" and it is one of those impossible-to-remove stickers that breaks if you try to mess with it. You have to break it just to install the second hard drive or more RAM (mine came with 12GB and I needed to add a fourth 4GB of RAM)
11) Touchpad is physically located way too far to the left. Given that the majority of people are right-handed, the touchpad should be closer to the right side, not the left. I have to reach over the laptop just to use the touchpad (which, by the way, doesn't work). On the other hand I think they were trying to avoid people touching it with their palm while typing. But an issue nonetheless.
12) RAID 0 -- Great, lets's improve HDD performance 2% at the risk of increasing risk by 60% of total catastrophic data failure (Lose Everything).
Fortunately you can circumvent this issue in the BIOS and by formatting your hard drive reinstalling Windows. Unfortunately most people do not want to do this, and also want to get started using their laptop right away, not after hours of installing things.
NOTE: If there is a single error with RAID 0, all of your data is permenantly lost. Additionally, RAID 0 never checks for errors! So enjoy all your years of files evaporate into thin air one day. Data loss experts will not be able to help.
13) Keyboard often cuts out for a letter so sometimes your sentences will be missing a letter in some of the words.
14) You must press FN key to use Home or End keys.
Fortunately if you know wht you are doing, you can fix this problem with AutoHotKey.
CONCLUSION:
Cost does not justify the means unless you must have the best graphics card! Otherwise stay with your current laptop and wait until Dell comes out with an XPS with a better graphics card. -
Only thing is, you don't need to. It is fast enough to not need overclocking.
Also, overclocking always runs the risk of causing permanent damage to your hardware, especially if you are new to overclocking. -
