Anyone able to clarify the Warranty issues, with installing a new hard drive in their GT780/GT783? I think I've read from several people that MSI doesn't care, but I want to make sure before I do it. If you can't install a new SSD for the primary drive, then that's going to stink.

Proceed. Swapping hard-drives doesn't void the warranty as previously stated here.

Then why bother selling me a product which they cannot directly help me with? :S

How hard is it to order a keyboard for my model and then change it? Doesn't require a monkey...they can even contact MSI about it.

I have this same screen and I couldn't agree more....I'm sooo happy I paid the extra $35...it was worth every penny! I also had mine calibrated with pyder Elite..so I'm not entirely sure how much that contributed as well...I am curious as to the 90% gamut...it was too much of an upcharge for me...but I am curious anyway...

No doubt. The colors can become very eye popping when the glossy display is not calibrated correctly and when the brightness, color and contrast maxed out. Once your glossy display is properly calibrated, it will no longer pop your eyeballs out :D . A glossy screen is actually more likely to display colors more accurately then the matte screens (all things being equal). This is due to the matte coating not only diffusing light from the outside but also diffusing the light from the LCD's backlight. It's just the nature of the technology. Each technology has it's pro's and cons. Neither is perfect and you must decide what's best for you.

Same here. In fact, the only time I ever saw any type of reflection in my display is when I was in a room filled with florescent lighting. There are 3 areas in my house where I normally use my laptop and all three areas have normal house hold lighting. I've never seen any type of reflection while using it in my house.

I would love to see the 90% display but I was told it wouldn't be worth it for me since I am not a web designer or a photo editor. If it was less than a $50 difference then I would have just bought it for the hell of it.

It's been about 3 years since I used anything with a matte type display but now that I've made the switch, I can't even look at a matte display anymore. They all look grey scale to me now.

That's what I'm saying too. That's the only "warranty" sticker on the machine isn't it? So if it doesn't void the warranty, why the sticker?

Oh, and I'm certain that replacing the screen in the GT783 will void the warranty, right? Unless I send it in to a authorized repair center? I can get the 90% screen for cheap, and have put in many screens before, just don't want to void the warranty at all cost.

Definitely worth the extra $35 :D

I had heard the same thing about the benefits only really being useful to a web designer or a photographer, so I'm glad I kept the extra coin in my pocket. I thought $135 was a little rich anyways and I'd rather put that money towards the 580m :D

Please Help Me Get THX Equalizer (NOT THE STUDIO APP) To Run!

Or Please Give Me Option To Turn Off Bass Entirely Without Adjusting Other Settings

TRUSTUDIO Is A Piece Of Junk And Does Nothing Good For Me, And Does NOT Have An Equalizer Option

If I Do Not Get An Option Then I Will Physically Tear Out The Subwoofer And Smash It With A Hammer And Throw It Away Problem Solved Now No More Bass!

The Bass Is Great For Movies And TV on the laptop But Is TERRIBLE for Trance Music --- IT RUINS IT!!!

    --

UPDATE STILL Can't Get THX EQ to run, BUT!! I found a way to ALMOST fix this problem! So until we can find a COMPLETE solution, do this:

    1) Install TRUSTUDIO.
    2) IGNORE all options
    3) In the top right next to the CLOSE button, there is a little DOWN ARROW. Click that.
    4) You see a bunch of options in the drop-down. Choose "Settings...".
    5) Now in settings make sure to choose "External Speaker"
    6) On the same screen, below External Speakers, you see "Crossover Frequency"
    7) MOVE CROSSOVER FREQUENCY ALL THE WAY TO THE RIGHT, TO 1000Hz
    8) Now turn on your Trance Music and Enjoy Almost No Bass!

    9) Also if you go the the Speakers option after doing this and move it all the way to the right, it gets rid of a little more bass even. Still isn't completely gone, but is 92% better sounding.

Yay now I don't have to defile my laptop by physically ripping out the subwoofer and smashing it with a hammer.

Still Waiting For Someone To Tell Me How To Run The THX EQ App Though

    --

    UPDATE:

On the MSI website ( here) I found this:
So Then, It Is Installed But Where Is The Graphical Front End??? How Do I Use The Equalizer???

    How to search this mega-thread:

Open up Google and then search for this string:

    site:forum.notebookreview.com/msi/584869-official-msi-gt780-gt783-owners-lounge text to find here

Replace the text to find here with the text that you are looking for, like skype hd. So the search string will be like this:

    site:forum.notebookreview.com/msi/584869-official-msi-gt780-gt783-owners-lounge skype hd

Here's a sample Google search result:
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&...ficial-msi-gt780-gt783-owners-lounge+skype+hd

I hope someone can benefit from this post.

Hey thanks for your time and help! Great post.

I just found out about the GT783/GT783R (by the title of this thread).

I did a search and saw there is almost $1000 price difference.

So far, all I have found are:
    GTX580M (vs the GTX570M)
    Has BluRay
    Includes SSD

So far I haven't found anything else to justify the massive price increase. Do you really think it's worth it? So far, I don't. 580M is not that much better than 570M, you can buy a BluRay player for ~$100, and a SSD for $100-$300

Ok All...please put your thinking caps on! I posted this here because I believe this to be an issue inherent to my laptop..and not just a general tech issue..and also because I know several resellers (Ken, Donald etc) regularly look here and I really value their extensive knowledge....So far, I have spoken to both an MSI tech and the head of tech support at XoticPc and neither of them know what is going on. The MSI tech is convinced it's something that occurred at Xotic...and to Xotic's credit, the head of Tech support is researching the issue....Now to the issue at hand:
I currently have the laptop in my sig....I ordered an received a Samsung 830 SSD 256GB to replace the secondary WD 750GB mechanical platter drive currently in the laptop. Today, I swapped the drives out, piece of cake. When I tried to boot the laptop back up...I was getting a boot error. The laptop is trying to boot from the Realtek LAN card...So I entered the Bios and saw that the boot order was set up correctly...1st choice: Patriot SSD 2nd Choice: Samsung 830, 3rd Choice: Optical Drive, 4th Choice: disabled. When I first received the laptop, this secondary platter drive was not seated and was loose in the bay so this same exact thing happened the very first time I turned the laptop on out of the box. Simply seating the drive and realigning the boot order in the bios fixed the issue no problem. However, now...no matter what the order is in the bios, the laptop absolutely will not boot from the Primary Drive (the Patriot SSD) if the Samsung drive is in the secondary bay. Heres the kicker...when I remove the Samsung SSD and replace it with the WD 750GB Mechanical Platter drive..it boots right back up no problem. Now keep in mind that there is nothing at all on this WD platter drive except a jpeg file of a Red MSI logo background that I got from this site...and a mysterious file with a .dll extension that I have no idea how or why it is there. The rest of the drive is entirely empty (698GB out of 698GB free). I am thinking that .dll file must for some reason be crucial to booting the computer. Why else would the computer ONLY boot if the WD platter drive is physically in the laptop? I even tried copying and pasting that .dll file from the secondary drive to my Patriot SSD to no avail....I also tried keeping that secondary drive bay totally empty and it still would not boot...does anyone have any inkling whatsoever what could be going on?? It seems that my laptop is crippled from ever having its secondary hard drive upgraded! Help!

It could be an issue with the BIOS.

Here are a few possible solutions:

    • Reflash the BIOS with the latest version
    • Reinstall Windows
    • If nothing works then just use the secondary drive bay as the primary and vice-versa for the primary drive bay.

On the other hand, I would say, send it into MSI and have them fix this issue. Especially if you are not very technologically savvy. This issue should be covered under warranty.

I think there may be more files and folders on that mechanical HDD. In fact, I think your boot sector and boot folder is on there. Can you reinsert the mechanical drive and then boot into windows, turning on ' show hidden files and folders' and also 'show protected operating system files'. Then see whats really on the drive.

If you find there is more stuff, you will have a situation I've seen lots of times before where the OS is on one drive in a two drive system, but the critical boot files are on the other. You can get around this though. There is a utility out there which will let you move the boot files. Let me find it and get back to you. :)

Actually I should have asked what Windows you're running. That was the case with Vista. Windows 7 now has a hidden 100MB partition and its done a little differently. I'd say that hidden 100MB partition is on your mechanical drive. Its still all fixable though. Just run sisparv6.cmd as administrator, and choose your Patriot SSD's drive letter and bingo you should be sorted. :) After that you can install the 2nd SSD and have some fun!

I am not too savvy....I would have no idea how to reflash the bios..also, I thought of swapping the physical locations of the 2 drives...but this worries me if the bios is set to follow certain drive paths for certain actions...currently, the Primary Patriot SSD with the OS is in the lower right drive bay and the WD Platter drive is in the upper left bay by the subwoofer...I don't know if this should matter considering even though I designate the Patriot as the first boot option in the bios....it will not follow it unless the WD Platter drive is present....

I do indeed have Windows 7....why would such files that are critical to booting end up on the secondary drive...especially knowing that many users will eventually upgrade? Is it possible there may be other critical files on the mechanical drive that wont be moved over by your fix? Either way, thank you so much for your advice...I will attempt this tonight or tomorrow and let you know how it works out!

MSI ship their laptop to different countries and all have warranty stickers at the bottom.

US branch doesn't really care of you open the laptop and adding your own parts, as long as you didn't cause any damage to the mainboard or other components inside the laptop.

Russia branch are more strict, I was told by their service manager that as long as the warranty sticker is removed then the warranty is voided.

Thanks Ken. Definitely appreciate the insight. What if I were to upgrade the screen? I'll wait until I see the standard screen, but I can grab the 90% for cheap, so I may do so if it won't void the warranty. Glad that HD swaps and other small swaps are good to go.

OK yeah I'm pretty convinced at this point this will fix your issue. Dont know what happened to sysparv6 but going to test it on my system I found its not there. Might be same for you. So instead, try this:

    1. In Disk Management, make your Patriot the 'Active Partition' (This has the OS on it, and should be C: )
    2. Open cmd as administrator (Click Start, type cmd, then press CTRL + SHIFT + ENTER) and type:
    bcdboot c:\windows /s C:
    3. Reboot, and then quickly enter the BIOS before you boot up next and make sure Patriot is set to be the first boot device

Let Windows boot once, then shut down and then remove the mechanical drive. You could then isntall the Samsung and start up, all should be fine.

    Good luck! :)

If you were listening, you would have fixed your bass issue a week ago when I told you how to do it. Remember my post responding to your post of baseless complaints? If you don't, go look back at post #5854. Then scroll down to #4 and you will see that I told you to change the crossover in the THX True Studio Application.

This is a complete solution. I see that you don't know anything about audio so I'll explain. By setting your crossover frequency to 1000Hz means your speakers will not playback frequencies below 1000Hz. For instance, my crossover setting on my receiver in my home theater is set to 80Hz. This means that my speakers will not play frequencies below 80Hz. Frequencies below 80Hz will be passed to my sub woofer.

Since I know you didn't see this in my past post responding to you, did you see in the same post informing you that you can in fact use the "Home" key and "End" key without pressing the "Fn" Key? This information is also in the same post #5854.

Hi everyone, maybe someone could helpme out there cause I am ready to pull my hair out. Ordered an MSI GT780 on the first from Xotic PC. Had them upgrade it with a blu-ray and an intel WLAN card with blutooth. Also had them remove the primary HDD so I could put in an SSD. Was toldby them upon removal of the HDD, I would need to paid an additional cost to have the bracket/caddy left in the machine. I paid it. When it came, it came with a windows disc, and a drivers disk. The drivers disk had no WLAN/bluetooth driver and no blu-ray software, so naturally none of those would work. I have since resolved those problems myself. However upon contacting them regarding the missing bracket/caddy, they proceded to send me some sort of cheap tiny rubber spacer. I told them this is not a caddy/bracket and they insist that is what comes stock in the machine and there is no second caddy/bracket. This sounds like BS to me. SoI ask other owners out there, in your machines is there a caddy/bracket for each of the two drives stock? Or is there one caddy/bracket and one spacer. Xotic PC has done nothing but drop the ball and give me the runaround, so I wouldn't be surprised if this is yet another lie...

Wow I really should've proofread that... lol sorry

The little rubber bracket is stock standard and does the job perfectly. Just make sure you've got it in the right spot and I'm sure you'll agree. I've got one on mine. :) (My system was supplied by GenTechPC).

My GT780DX was with 1 hard drive,a 750GB WD Scorpio Black.

I was in the primary drive position and secured in place by a metal bracket.

In the shipping box was a hard rubber block to secure a second hard drive.

I bought a second bracket from the MSI notebook service center.

Are you kidding me? They really wanted you to pay extra to keep the bracket? You are supposed to get two brackets for free whether it be metal or rubber. The rubber one works fine. It secured my SSD to the point where I don't worry about it coming lose but that's besides the fact. I can't believe they wanted to charge you for it. Makes me glad I decided not to order through them.

Using S-Bar, I am unable to define the P1 Key

Instead, it only uses the Turbo On or Turbo Off.

I WANT TO MAKE MY OWN CUSTOM KEY

    • Reinstalling S-Bar did not work
    • Uninstalling NVIDIA OC Tool did not work

No problem. :) Upgrade screen won't void warranty as well.

In the future if you ever need to send it back to MSI, just make 100% sure that the issues are not causing by your own components before send it back to them.

You can try contact MSI but I am not sure if you will get a respond, I don't think they want to make it official or anything in writing. :p

Mine did not come with the bracket. MSI said it was not included.

How can I add 3D to a GT78DX? It's not very important. Just wondering.

I've deleted a number of posts in the past few pages of this thread. Here's a hint: have some respect with your replies, bickering is not allowed on NBR and it will get you banned.

If I keep having to delete posts that violate the forum rules I am going to get crabby.

Also do not post twice in a row. Edit your post if you forgot something and use multi-quote (see my sig if you are confused).

    Can anyone tell me what the;

    NB EC Firmware actually does?

MSI tells me to update that firmware without telling me why. Some enlightment would be nice.

    Hi Sammyc51,

That NB EC Firmware is erasable / programmable independent to user / BIOS "actions" part of NVRAM, which controls various tasks and devices via EC Controller chip such as keyboard, programmable buttons, On / Off button, mouse / touchpad, ports, FAN Controller, system shutdown in case of overheat, etc...since it uses their own languague tools based on EC Controller model and registers it's hard to tell what concrete is changed without any changelog from the manufacturer...

Edit: just one example to gt780 users - latest EC FW change keyboard backlid behavior from previous version...

Seems important....shame I have no idea or the knowledge of how to flash the firmware or BIOS.... :(

Flashing the bios & EC firmware are fairly simple procedures. The bios downloads are found HERE, and the flash instructions HERE. Likewise, the firmware download is HERE, and it's flash instructions HERE.

Just take care and you will be fine.

    :)

The Live Update 5 software that comes with the laptop is capable of scanning and updating your BIOS, mobo drivers, VGA driver, and utility updates :)

Personally, I would not opt a WIN 7 flash utility..... the DOS method outlined in the link I provided will be safer.

Understandable, but for people not as versed in BIOS/firmware updates, I think this utility is better than not doing it at all.

Sorry, but if the individual 'bricks' their computer, MSI assumes no liability or responsibility in this. If the person lacks the confidence or expertise to DOS flash, then I think it better they have a competent individual do this for them. Not even MSI is recommending a WIN 7 flash for the GT780/783.

Why would MSi include it in their software if it's so dangerous? There are no guarantees implied by utilizing any other method either...

Yes, I understand either way nothing is implied, but this was not my point, and I believe you know it. The DOS method is safer, and this is the method shown on their flash download pages. I would not suggest a novice use any flash method if they are uncomfortable doing so, and especially a higher risk WIN flash. If you understood my point, why argue? Are we bantering for the sake of arguement here, LOL!

I ordered from xotic...when my system arrived, my primary drive was fastened tightly in a bracket...but my secondary drive was actually unseated and loose...they have since sent me a small rubber stopper which works just fine to hold the drive in place...however, if they charged you extra to keep the bracket in the setup and they didnt leave it....I would def complain....I cannot believe they charged you in the first place...My first experience with xotic was a great one back in 2008...this time around has been a different story for sure.....I am a very busy man and devote every extra minute I have to spend with my 2 year old daughter..so the only time I get to "play" with my laptop is after she goes to bed at night and after my office work is done..so this is usually like 10PM...well because of some issues from Xotic....I have literally spent the majority of those hours of ownership attempting to fix issues that stemmed from whoever "built" my rig....between myelf, my wife and my brother in law, ( I regularly send people to them to purchase computers) I prob purchase 2 computers per year every year..and I think I'm switching to PowerNotebooks or Gentech from here on out....

@ WHATSTHE POINT...You always post such great and helpful pics...heres a silly question...does it matter which bay is considered the "Primary" and "Secondary" bay? For example, is the lower right bay always the Primary and the upper left bay by the subwoofer always the secondary??

Thank you for taking the time to help me with this issue! I wanted you to see what my Disk Management screen looks like..it does seem like for some reason they put those critical booting files on my D: drive...what a pain! When you say "make my Patriot drive the active partition"....it already is...however, it seems like those files on the D: drive are also listed as "Active"....would your aforementioned procedure still be the same to migrate these critical boot files over to the PAtriot? Thanks again in advance.....and this will be the last time I'll take up space in this forum with this....as this seems to be more of a Windows issue now...and not a specific MSI issue....I will be asking for further guidance in the Window forum...thanks again!

    Exactly my thought.

However, MSI wants me to flash the firmware of the keyboard and stuff to see if it fixes my problem.

Though my knowledge in it is absolute zero. I even fear going into BIOS and clicking stuff I don't know D:

It is oddly named imo. Pressing P1 activates Turbo. And selecting an app from the S-Bar option (Program P1 Setting) does nothing for this P1 button on the Quick Launch Sensor pad. Instead, it programs a function key on the keyboard; the F4 key :)

You would have to change out your display. In my opinion, 3D is not worth it if it your computer doesn't already come with it. You would be doing a display swap from a completely fine display just to gain 3D. On top of that, your going to dish out a couple hundred dollars for the new display.

By the way, I thought your GT780 came configured with RAID? If it did, then your GT780 should already have two brackets since RAID is only configured with two HDD's.
