No, they do not downclock...that myth has been floating around for over a couple of years and it is simply not true.

i was asking WTP what showed up in his bios then, if they showed 1333mhz since the cpu didn't clock up to 1600mhz.

I would love to get the 1600Mhz instead of the 1333Mhz.
I think I was misinformed somewhere, sometime.

If only I learned that before I ordered.
And if only I have the extra $58 for the price difference

    Greetings,

I just purchased a gtr783r last night. I unboxed it, booted it up, and let it do the first boot software config. The touch bar was working just fine. For shutdown, I made it hibernate.

About an hour ago I powered the thing back on and it resumed Windows and I thought all was well. It turns out that all is not well. I've noticed two issues.

    0) The touch bar does nothing now. I press the panelover various glyphs and nothing. Lookingthrough this forum I haven't found anything related to the touch bar other than the s-bar application needs to be running in order for the touch bar buttons to work. Mine is running. I've fully powered off and restarted a number of times. I've reinstalled the s-bar utility eventhough the latest on MSI's site was the same version the thingcame with.
    1) More annoying that 0, is this spacebar issue. Note the above missing spaces and occasional extra spaces. When looking for a relatively economical gaming notebook, I specifically avoided the ASUS g74sx due to a profound amount of unhappy posters complaining about keyboard/touch pad issues being known and, as yet unresolved. I found one mention about a possiblespacebar issue here but that was in reference to a 780 owner and that he was only touching the bottom edge of the spacebar. I hit the thing w/my right thumb on the right side, but sqarely, on the bar. This has proven more of an annoyance than 0 thus far. I'm just curious if it's a common 'getting used to it' kind of thing or if I really have a hardware/fw issue?

In any case, back to the touch bar issue. I have not yet wiped and reinstalled everything, but _really_...I'm literally on my 4th boot for the thing and have install chrome, and imgburn, ventrilo, crystal disk mark, cpuid, s-bar(reinstall), and the the diablo 3 beta. This seems crazy. Is there some obscure key combination I have inadvertently hit that disables the touch-bar similar to the touch pad?

On a side note, duringmy research I had come across a site (maybe a Newegg review IIRC) wherein some poster was unhappy with the 783 because it was not possible to get nvidia sourced drivers to recognize the hardware and install. That the drivers _had_ to come from MSI. Is this true and real or can I install vanilla fresh drivers direct from nvidia?

Any assistance would be swell in all ways.
    Thanks.

IMO,Raid0 is not really the best way to configure a gaming notebook.

Much better performace can be achieved with a single SATA III 120GB SSD or larger as the primary boot drive.

Try not to put too much faith into what people post on newegg.

The newer drivers directly from NVIDIA work just fine.

When the GTX570M was new there was no support in the driver for the GTX570M and more recently the GTX580M.This is no longer the case.

I and many othe people are using the 295.51 beta driver that's very stable.

Graphics Driver - Verde 295.51 Driver - GeForce

If you will at some point in the future you deside to do a complete clean installation of Windows 7 x64 look at this linked post as a reference.

I was thinking about getting 16gb of Samsung DDR3 1600 memory. I read somewhere that anything over 8gb of DDR3 1866 will BSOD a i7 2670. Does anyone know if 16gb of 1600 will be ok for use with my 2670?

1600 is fine, it was 16GB of 1866 causing BSOD.

I have a Kingston HyperX that I plan to install. I would have already installed it but for the touch bar issue. I want to ensure it's not some problem w/the laptop before I go cracking the warranty sticker. I have seen, posts here, that such a thing is ok for the US from MSI's point of view. However, I don't wish to give Fry's any excuse to deny me if there really is an issue.

I'm burning the recovery disks right now. I'll wipe and reload those in an effor to see if I can get the touch bar working again. That will at least rule out some silly hardware death issue.

This is what I had figured/hope. I had seen references to beta drivers but wasn't certain if it was just that someone had cracked open nvidia's and rebundled them to work for the gt78x. Similar to the Omega drivers back in the day when I had a Dell Inspiron 8100.

    Awesome.

Indeed, bare metal win7 ultimate after, unless hw is faulty, I do this factory restore to see if touch bar will work again.

    Thank you very much!

So as an update, the factory restore, even going into the BIOS setup and loading the defaults + factory restore, doesn't bring the touch bar back to life. Craziness. Has anyone experienced complete touch-bar death?

I'm returning the thing tonight for an exchange. Although I'm a bit unnerved by the apparent fragility of that part of the system. Are there any other tools available that can kick the fan speed to high, just like the touch bar would do?

Another question is that I see threads talking about overclocking the gpu. I have the overclock utility installed and in the systray and it shows enabled. Oddly both settings are greyed/unselectable but there's a check next to 'enabled'. How does one change the setting? Anyway, the posts indicate that that must be running and then pressing the P1. My touch bar is dead, but there's the FN-[6] IIRC which has P1 subscripted. Doing that brings up the s-bar-forked dialog asking me to assign that key to something. As in an app for it to launch. So which app do I set this to? Or what am I missing? Is this related to the fan speed thingy? I can not find anything wrt overclocking the gpu from the nvidia settings panel either.

Again, any assistance would be swell.

    Thanks.

Do you have power to the touchbar? Try gently prying up the touchbar, and check that it's ribbon cable connectors are secure.

Disable hibernation and use sleep instead.

run powercfg /hibernate off from cmd

PrimalNaCl as -=$tR|k3r=- suggests, lift the Control Bar up,it's only snapped in place. There are no screws holding it down.

Remove the battery and power cord.

Place a plastic knife into the space between the Control Bar and the notebook case on both ends of the Control Bar.The Control Bar is shiny and the case plastic is dull.Pry the ends up then lift the bar all the way around about an inch or less away from the case shell.

The white flat ribbon cable under the Controll Bar is held in place by small black levers.Hold the cable in the slot and press the lever. If this cable is out of it's connection to the Control Bar or the connection to the motherboard the Control Bar won't work.

PIX #1 shows plastic knife between the case and Control Bar.
PIX #2 shows the ribbon cable to the left of the wireless card.
PIX #3 show full view of Control Bar out of the case shell.(Killer 1103 with 3rd antenna wireless card)

In the advanced settings of the Power Plan>Lid close Action>do nothing

I don't think the lid has the sensor for this feature. I could be wrong but I would imagine some sort of sensor is needed.

It doesn't have this function and it's a safety feature. it prevents laptop lid got open by accident while it's in the carrying case or luggage.

First remove the battery and power cord.

Next remove the 2 screws on the bottom of the GT780,GT780DX or GT783 that are next to the keyboard symbols molded in the plastic

Next, remove the Control Bar as shown in the 1st attached photo. It is only snapped into the case shell. There's no screws holding it in but there is a ribbon cable on the bottom of the Control Bar that connects it to the motherboard.Lift it out of the shell carefully. If the ribbon cable comes off it is easily reattached by securing it in place with the little black levers.

Then remove the 5 screws at the top edge of the keyboard that are exposed when the Control Bar is lifted out of the case shell as shown in picture #3.

Now the keyboard can be lifted up to expose 2 memory slots.

Caution, there's ribbon cables under the keyboard that connect the keyboard to the motherboard so lift it up carefully.

Perhaps, but after I open the lid and then move my mouse, the notebook awakens from sleepmode just fine. Check your mouse or touchpad 'awaken' settings.

Does anyone know if the sound card along with THX True Studio has a surround sound setting when wearing headphones. The reason I ask is because I have a nice pair of headphones that use 3.5mm and I don't feel like investing in a lesser sound quality USB headset. The headphones I have are not meant for gaming and I understand that the USB headsets have built in hardware to achieve a 3D type sound. I just want to be able to achieve this with my 3.5mm headphones. Does anyone know what I have to do and if the sound card along with the right software is capable of this?

    This I found most important.

Top 5 Most Frequent Drive Accesses by Type and Percentage:

    -8K Read (7.60%)
    -8K Write (56.35%)
    -1K Write (6.10%)
    -16 Write (5.79%)
    -64K Read (2.49%)

Top 5 account for: 78.33% of total drive access over test period

Largest access size in top 50: 256K Read (0.44% of total)

I wouldn't know since I've only ever used one SSD but shouldn't all SATAIII SSD's be close to each other in terms of speed when it comes to the top 5? I wouldn't imagine someone would ever notice real life performance between any SATA III SSD's when it comes to 8k read/write.

When looking at SSD benchmark scores manufacturers want to wow people with big sequential numbers but that is where only 1% of the daily disk access is.

So which numbers in SSD benchmarking suites should we be looking at?

    It's the 4K numbers.

Ok, my girlfriend's mom had some DVDs that wouldn't play so I thought about trying it in my laptop, put one in, tried to run it, laptop said no discs inserted, so I thought ok, maybe the DVD really is bad. Open it up and miraculously there's no disc. I don't hear any rattling, peered inside with a flashlight and don't really see anything. Confused, I put a second disc in, and it plays just fine.

I'm pretty sure I didn't imagine this, so I'm guessing the disc is still somewhere inside. In the short-term it looks like it's not gonna cause problems, but I don't want to risk possible long-term damage. I'm guessing at this point I'm going to need to open up the laptop to get the disc out.

So, is there some guide/instructions on what I need to open to do this? Also what size screwdrivers? I have a Phillips #1 but it doesn't seem to be quite working on some of the screws and I don't want to break the screw trying to force it open.

This sometimes happens if the disk isn't fully snapped into the tray.

Remove the drive and you should find the missing disk.

One phillips screw holds the DVD drive in the notebook. It has a DVD symbol in the plastic next to it.

So if I unscrew that I can pull the DVD drive out from the side without opening anything else up? (How would I do that, since I don't see any way of grabbing hold of the drive) I did open the back cover earlier and didn't see anything, but I thought the DVD drive was still screwed in so I didn't try to pull it out.

I thought he was asking about lid opened action to resume from from sleep mode. :)

    http://www.macyourself.com/2008/08/...wake-ups-when-an-apple-laptops-lid-is-opened/

Most new laptops required user to press something to resume from sleep mode when open the lid. some laptops can resume from sleep by just open the lid but only when it's connected on AC not battery mode.

Yes, I realize that but what I am saying is that all SATA III SSD's usually have about the same 4K numbers and it should be close enough to where the consumer wouldn't see any real world performance difference.

In the end, I think all SATA III SSD's are close enough in performance to the point that consumers will not see a difference in performance.

Consumers should be purchasing SSD's based on reliability, software and ease of use. I don't know who it is but one of the manufacturers don't allow you to do a firmware update while in Windows but other manufacturers allow you to just click a button in their provided software.

Why even have it go into sleep mode when moving the laptop from your bed room to your living room? If the laptop is not equipped with the sensor to bring it out of sleep mode when you open the lid, then just simply make closing the lid "Do Nothing". If you go into Advanced Settings under Power Options, you could put it into sleep mode by pressing the power button.

Am I the only one who doesn't use sleep mode? Is there any other reason to use it besides shaving 10 seconds off of the start up time?

I never use sleep mode. If I go room to room I close lid and have the system set to do nothing. With SSD startup at ~20 secs even if I did shut down it wouldn't be that painful.

    Hello,

i am currently playing TERA with my guild and i noticed that my F3 key doesnt work. I was cuqrious why this happened, but couldt find the reason.
why does the F3 key not work.

Also the VGA OC tool seems to be disappearing from time to time and i have to repair it and restart PC.

I really need to get the F3 keys to work, its very vital for me. Thanks

not the point. it was an example. it could be going from home to a friend's or to work, or few hours while doing something else. it just used to work like that and it was a nice thing. Now it seems there's more steps added to do the same things as before.

neways, not a big deal. just would be usefull.

I know I've seen it here, but I am striking out with the search functionality. I have the GT780R, and am looking to add a 3rd drive to the optical bay. Anyone know A) Whether the optical bay interface is PATA or SATA, B) Where I can get a caddy to convert it. I have seen NewModeUS, but am unsure of which one I need exactly. I also think I saw a post by XoticPC about it, but that was months ago now. Thank you for your help!
