I am using 16gb of Samsung DDR3 1600 with my 2670qm and it is running at 1600.
The 2670qm can actually run up to 12gb of 1866.
This has been discussed numerous times and we already know for a fact that the 2670 can run memory at 1600 and 1866.

Hello, I have some problems upgrading RAM in my GT780DX. I've bought my notebook with 8GB RAM (2x4GB) installed in two lower slots. I wanted to add another 2x4GB but when I install the new memory my notebook will start but it wont display anything. I know that the new memory is not the problem. Thanks in advance for any help.

jrwingate6 makes some good points, but I'd like to add a little more for your consideration.
First, has your cousin had personal experience with both Asus & MSI models? I have actually had my hands on both, and I can tell you the MSI GT780/783 models are in higher class of performance, and more bang for the buck. You get what you pay for, and with MSI you'll get more for your money.
If you will read HERE, there is much to consider, and you will find quite a bit of performance, temp, and stress testing info. Also, though a bit dated, you will see where I outline 11 reasons for choosing the MSI GT780/783 over the Asus G74SX...... and since IMO, the case has only improved in favor of MSI. If you will take the time to investigate thoroughly, I am sure you will conclude that MSI 'cooling' is of no concern, and temps are actually outstanding in such a performance class.
Late last year, my eldest son (35), an avid fantasy RPG player, purchased a G74SX on an impulse buy. Shortly thereafter and with pride, he was quick to visit to show-off his 'cool stealthy' new purchase. Needless to say, after much comparison with my GT780 model (then, also the 560M), he soon became disenchanted with the G74SX....... suffered buyers remorse, and has since sold the ASUS model. Now, his eye is also fixed on the GT783, and imagine how he feels now, with the recent newer releases of MSI's 570M & 580M models. Asus has yet to upgrade their gaming line to these superior GPU's.
My first thought of the G74SX was that it certainly had a unique look, but this impression was soon reduced with to the 'feel' of a big chunk of bulky plastic, or 'mooch-appeal'. If you find this model attractive, I would suggest you look well beyond outward appearances. Performance wise, it performed on par and as well as can be expected in a 560M machine, and cooling, noise levels, and screen were very nice. Some of the things I do not like, is the fact the 560M is actually soldered to the main board, and many complaints of GPU throttling have come from the Asus camp. I understand many of these folks are having to use 'ThrottleStop' as a work-a-round for this problem..... a problem that is yet to be properly remedied by Asus.
Anyhow, the comparison really is not equal, but moreoverly comparing apples to oranges. You are one of many here making this comparison, and some have even crossed fences in favor of the G74SX. For those who have done so, IMO they have not used good reasoning or rationale for doing so, and I suspect most are more motivated by reasons they do not to fully disclose. In a recent case of this, a member here complained his GT780 model suffered crashes and failed memtest86. He then states he exchanged the unit, for another also suffering the same issues...... so he also returned this 2nd GT780, then exchanging it for a G74SX. In a final note of irony, his last statement was, " This is a shame since on paper, the MSI has better specs". SO TRUE, but then as others challenged his thinking, the member became defensive, later suggesting MSI build quality issues.
Now see, I have a couple problems with this member's rationale......
1.) Two units with exactly the same issue is a highly unlikely scenario, and his complaint is virtually unheard of in this model.
2.) His primary complaint is about MEMORY, a problem that could exist in any brand, make, or model..... even Asus. Why not simply address the memory issue, rather than the entire notebook model.
3.) He later disclosed his purchase and exchanges were through Amazon. Had this member purchased from a custom building reseller, he could have avoided these issues, and remained a happy GT780 owner..... rather than short-changing himself to a lessor notebook model. You see, not only do you have the ability to customize your notebook, by purchasing from one of our reputable resellers, you also provide yourself an added layer of protection and quality assurance. The resellers work very hard at this, and their personal touch and testing will assure maximum customer satisfaction. Dealing with with retailers or e-tailers such as Amazon, do not provide you this avenue or options. The resellers can also assist you with manufacturers, and warranty claims. Had this member seen the wisdom in this, his memory could have been replaced, and the notebook fully tested. Our resellers and their contact info is also found HERE.
Again, I suspect this member had other motivations for opting the G74SX. He is certainly welcome to his own decisions, but don't blow smoke up my rear trying to present a case for the G74SX, LOL!
Anyway, I hope this has been of some help. Good luck in your buying decision Sapphiera.

Testing wireless download speed today.
With the availability of the Windows 8 Consumer Preview today I desided to use it to test my wireless setup's download speed with the 3.3GB 64bit ISO file from the Microsoft server.
I have my stock clocked GT780DX with a 240GB OCZ Vertex 3 MAX IOPS SSD running a Bigfoot Killer 1103 with 3 antennas connecting to a Netgear WNDR37AVv2 router. My WNDR4500 is in for service so my old reliable Netgear WNDR37AV gets the callup.
I'm about 10 yards from the router,in my living room, getting the signal through 2 cement walls.
Windows 8 Consumer Preview ISOs from here:
http://api.viglink.com/api/click?fo...w ISO images&jsonp=vglnk_jsonp_13305667017916
I tested the download on both the 5ghz band and the 2.4ghz band 3 times and posting best from both. The 5ghz band had a mostly steady 10 Megabytes/ps until near the end while the 2.4ghz band only reached a top speed of 6.8 MB per second.
PIX #1 = 5ghz = 6 minutes and 2 seconds
Pix #2 = 2.4ghz = 8 minutes and 25 secondsAttached Files:

His i7-2860QM will slightly benchmark differently from your i7-2860QM.
His GTX-580M will slightly benchmark differently from your GTX-580M.
A combination of his i7-2860QM and GTX-580M will benchmark differently from your i7-2860QM and GTX-580M.
Those are just two variables. There are a lot more. -

Why don't you run Vantage & 3DMark11 again, and post screenshots for us to see. Do you know how to take screenshots, and host the images?

I ran it few hours ago than I found out mine was lower around 2000 on vantage

You could try opening msconfig and stop unneeded programs and services from running on startup.
After you got your notebook did you do a clean Windows 7 x64 installation with the newest driver, software and utilities?
Just too many variables between one notebook and another of the same make and model.
Also don't put alot of thought into benchmarks.
How does the unit perform running the software you bought it to run?
I rarly do much benchmarking other than checking my SSD performance.
If it gets a bit slow I just manually run a trim program.

OMG my friend..will you just please use and enjoy your notebook already! It's fine to benchmark a new toy....but I think it's a huge mistake to get so caught up in numbers....unless something is WAY off..and yields noticeable performance deficits....just game, surf, watch movies, listen to music..and ENJOY!! You're really missing out on your system by examining every single tiny thing....Enjoy and be happy my friend!

DC to AC inverter is what you would need - not just a lighter adapter. Just ensure the inverter is rated for the 180watt draw or more to stay on the safe side. Most truck stops have many in stock as does Autozone and other car parts retailers.
No problem Ken,
I've been trying to experience more delayed gratification in my life. Everything is expected to be immediate these days. You know? It's healthy to have to wait (due to restocking for those that don't know) and the antici
pation.... is almost as good as the reception!
I told you from the get-go that I wanted it for my birthday and you made it happen.
OH, and Ken and everyone else, if you could, please help me out in my thread here:

I assumed(bad to assume anything) he was talking about weight and wanting a lighter AC Adapter as opposed to the "thought to be heavy" stock GT780 adapter.
The wording never crossed my mind that it's refering to a cigarette lighter adapter. -
hi ! i've got another question.. i've just ordered the msi gt783 and informed my dad about it and he seems to think that it would be, in his exact words, ''too heavy for a little girl like me'' so i was wondering if it's really that heavy. 3.8 kgs isn't much.. is it?

-
p.s. Those links of yours give me different (higher) prices than you mentioned when I click on them? $339 for the 256GB and $175 for the 128GB. Thats after discount. I can't seem to get your prices on anything! -
Can I ask about the barebones 1761 here? Because I wanted to know if anyone with a 1761 has a solution to the touchpad buttons being difficult to press. I don't know why MSI went with a single plastic piece for the buttons unlike the GT780.
On an unrelated note, is anyone seriously annoyed that MSI continues to make home and end on the same key as pgup and pgdown, yet leaves the absolutely useless scroll lock and insert keys alone? -

Hi.
First of all this is my first post, so Hi to all of you!. (reading you have been of great help)
I come here to see if someone has tried to use a US backlight keyboard on EU 780dxr model (no backlight keyboard). I bought it from frostycomputers because he said that it would work but here I am with the same no backlight keyboard as I already have but with the keys in a messed order( I have installed the msi light utility and makes no difference)
Thanks! -
Also post pictures -
Let's see.
I have a gt780dxr ES (Spain model with backlit keyboard). I have bought a backlit US keyboard that I was told it should work fine.
So I removed my keyboard, changed with the US backlit one and installled KLM MSI software. The keyboard is properly connected because I can write with it (I am using it right now) but backlight doesn't work.
I have checked MSI web and I have found the EC firmware. There are 2 versions (one for backlit keyboard and another for no backlit keyboard). I have tried to install the backlit one but the flash utility says that my board number is not the same as the flash utility. I don't know if the boards are really different or if it is really a name check but I fear that I have been deceived and that I can't use the US backlit keyboard (unless someone has been able to use it in a non backlit model)- -
So, after much searching and swearing along with weeping and gnashing of teeth I finally found myself doing something I never thought I would do. I bought an MSI.
I need to figure out how to put that thing in my signature.
Anyways here is the build spec I went with.

webez, I think you have to modify some sort of connector to get the lighting to work. It's not as simple as plug n play. Contact Ken from GenTech, he may be able to elaborate a little more on it. I do know that it's not plug n play however.
Also, check the first post of this thread, there may be a little more information on it as well.
